毎年、我が家族がクリスマスの為に何か手作りのギフトを新しい体験しながら、作ります。この戸倉上山田温泉の「Ｂａｍｂｏｏ」というお店でプリザーブフラワーの飾りを作ったり、軽井沢の信州ハム工房でソーセージを作ったり、など。

今年は戸倉上山田のステンドグラス工房でグラスの箸置きやマグネットを作りに行きました。戸倉駅前の酒造コレクションの中のステンドグラス工房がほぼ一年前に上山田温泉の本通りに新しいお店を開きました。今日は子供達を連れて、初めてステンドグラスの製作を体験しました。親子で楽しい思い出が出来ました。３歳の美咲ちゃんさえできました。

温泉の旅のついでに、家族のオブジェを作ったらどうですか？箸置き（２０分、１０００円）からランプシェード（１０時間、１万円より）まで、お時間と予算に合わせて何でもできます。

Every year for Christmas, the kids and I make something to give to friends and relatives as gifts. In the past, we went to 'Bamboo' here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to make preserved flower arrangements, and we made sausages at the Shinshu Ham factory in Karuizawa.

Today, we tried making glass art at Yamazaki-san's new Stained Glass Art Studio that opened up on Kamiyamada Onsen's main street this time last year. Our onsen town got some seed money from the Prefecture, and we remodelled one of the storefronts. A soba shop and Yamazaki's stained glass shop opened up on the street level.

Yamazaki-san patiently explained the fine points of making hashi-oki (chopstick holders) and other small accessories to me and the kids. Even 3-year old Misaki-chan got in on the action as we made a bunch of refrigerator magnets in addition to the hashi-oki.

For people who have the time for a leisurly stay at our onsen town and would like to try a family-friendly arts activity, I highly recommend applying your creativity to making stained glass art at Yamazaki-san's shop!

上山田小学校の音楽会に・・・アコーディオン？ At Kamiyamada Elementary School's Music Festival: Accordions?

Accordions at a Japanese elementary school?!

上山田小学校の音楽会は今日でした。自分が評議員のお蔭で、ＶＩＰ席でした。Ａｎｄｙ君（４年生）とＫｅｎ君（２年生）と生徒の皆さんの成長は音楽を通じて、見れました。

特に、金管バンドが素晴らしかったです。小学校で金管バンド何って、私の地元のシアトルで聞いた事がない;大体は高校からですね。

そういう進んでいる所がありながら、一つ「？」と思ったところがありました:　アコーディオンもあった事です。日本の小学校に洋風なブラスバンドが何であるのは別として、アコーディオンは海外で民芸音楽の世界ぐらいにしかいないです。

言わせて頂けたら、
上山田小学校は千曲市の金管バンド有りの小学校として、唯一だそうです；
この上山田温泉に芸者の文化が残っています;
最近の若い女性は三味線や伝統の踊りに興味がなく、芸者さんになりたい人が少なくて困っています;
上山田小学校は三味線や日本舞踊も教えれば、その伝統に興味を持つ方が増えるかもしれない;将来に芸者さんになりたくなるかもしれない。

…と、上山田小学校の音楽会でアコーディオンを聞きながら思いました。

Our local Kamiyamada Elementary School's Music Festival was held today at the Culture Hall here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. As I am one of the outside auditors for the school, I got to attend and sit in one of the VIP seats. It was great to be able to see our Andy (4th grade) and Kenny (2nd grade) as well as the rest of the students exhibit how much they have grown through their musical education.

Most impressive was the brass band. I can't think of any grade schools back in my home town of Seattle that have their own brass band. Most such bands don't start until high school. However, as advanced as that might be, the thing that struck me was the use of the accordions. Whether or not it is good that an elementary school in Japan has a Western-style band is a separate issue, but accordions are an instrument that even in the West are pretty much relegated to folk music.

In my humble opinion,
Kamiyamada Elementary School is supposedly the only one in the city of Chikuma that has its own brass band;
The school is also the local one for this onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada;
Our onsen town still has 35 active geisha, who's numbers are dwindling as the younger generation of ladies aren't interested in becoming geisha;
If Kamiyamada's school also taught shamisen and traditional Japanese dance, then some of the students may develop an interest in those arts;
If they do, then they may consider becoming geisha as they grow older.

Anyways, that was what I was thinking while being entertained by accordions at the school music fair.





秋の善光寺:　美咲ちゃんの七五三 Zenkoji in Autumn + Misaki's "Shichi-Go-San"

亀清旅館の若若女将の七五三で今日、親子三人で善光寺へお参りしに行ってきました。貴重な親子のお時間、贅沢なフランス料理の昼食、紅葉した善光寺…　良い思い出になりました。着物の美咲ちゃんがいつもの女の子となんとなく違う;お姫様の様になりました。ママも頑張って、着物を。上田紬の綺麗な青い着物。（私はただのスーツだったけど、一応、ママと揃う為に上田紬のネックタイにしました。）

Our daughter Misaki celebrated her "Shichi-Go-San" today. Literally meaning 7-5-3, it is a chance for 7-year old and 3-year old girls in Japan dress up in a kimono, and boys when they are 5 years old to dress up in suits, and go to a local shrine or temple for a special ceremony.

So today, we dressed our little 3-year old Misaki in a lovely pink kimono and while her brothers were at school, the 3 of us (mom in blue Ueda Tsumugi kimono and I in my suit -- with an Ueda Tsumugi necktie!) went to the big Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. Some precious mother-father-daughter time, a luxurious lunch at a french restaurant, and Zenkoji splendid in fall leaves -- it made for a memorable day.

レアーアースと…手ぬぐい？ Rare Earth and ... hand towels?

Made with care in ... China

我々旅館は通常、お客様に手ぬぐいを上げます。亀清の手ぬぐい業者の社長は昨日、顔を出してくれました。主の手ぬぐい生産は中国ですって。そして、９月の海上保安庁と中国の漁業船の事故のせいで、日中関係が荒くなってきたせいで、手ぬぐい輸入にも影響があると。従って、一枚４２円から４９円に値上げだと。

レアーアースの輸入に影響があるって聞いたが、手ぬぐいも？

旅館の経営者は色んな悩みがある。設備投資や、お客様の満足度、エコ化、スタッフの育ち方、お料理のメニュー等など。経済や円高、高齢化などのマクロの影響ももちろんある。

今度は、尖閣沖の船の事故？他の問題はある程度計画を立てて、対応はできますが、こういう政治関係の問題はな…

話は変わりますが、亀清の後継で来る前まではシアトルで貿易会社で勤めていました。主には農産物をアメリカから日本へ輸出していました。特に、ワシントン州産の玉ねぎ。その時にの一番の敵が中国からの安い玉ねぎだった。最初はアメリカの生産者が中国の玉ねぎを馬鹿にしていた。「肥料は農家のウンチじゃないか」と。でも、最近は中国の生産技術が段々と上がって、アメリカといい勝負になっていた。長野に引っ越ししてきてから、皆が「国産！」と騒いでいる。先日はスーパーでこの千曲市産の玉ねぎを買って来てみた。包丁で半分に切ったら、中が腐っていた。

国産だからすべて良しに限られていない。中国も、アメリカも、良い所と悪い所がある。皆がその良い所同士を行かせてほしいな。そうすると手ぬぐいの値上げの解決のもなる様な気がする…

My heroine -- Ezaki-san

夕べは私のヒロインが戸倉上山田に来ました：三重県の伊勢志摩国立公園、鳥羽の旅館女将・エコツアーガイドの江崎貴久さん。彼女のメールアドレスを見たら、mermaid@...って書いてある。なるほど、人魚でいらっしゃる！

江崎さんの事は以前から、アドバイザーの山田圭一郎さんからお聞きして、実際にお会いできるのは初めてでした。江崎さんは旅館の女将をやりながら、鳥羽の海と島の自然・文化をお客様に案内するガイドしてはります。エコツアーの海島遊民クラブという会社を立ち上げて、環境省のエコツーリズム大賞受賞、本人は全国「このガイドさんに会いたい１００人」に選定。

私は彼女の「ガイドが楽しんでいるなら、その楽しさはお客さんに伝わる」という気持ちの影響を受けて、そのスピリットで亀清旅館の姨捨夜景・伝説ツアーをやり続いております。

今回の公演で耳に残った江崎さんの言葉は「気が付いた時に」（つまり、その日中にやらないとどんどんと伸びてなかなか実現しにくい）事と、「気が付いた人がやるべき」（つまり、「これがあれば良いな」と思う時に人にやらせるのではなくて、自分でやる！）事。

本人にお会いできて、さらに思いました:　江崎さんはパワーがあります！　　戸倉上山田温泉にわざわざ遠くからお越しになって頂いて、有難うございました！

My heroine came to Togura Kamiyamada yesterday: Kiku Ezaki-san from Toba, Ise-Shima National Park in Mie Prefecture. Besides being the proprietress of a ryokan, she started a guide service sharing the natural and cultural bounty of the ocean and islands of Toba to visitors.

The guide company that Ezaki-san started, 'Ecotour Kaitoh Yumin Club', won Japan's Environmental Agency's Ecotourism Award, and she herself was selected as one of the top 100 guides from throughout the country.

Ezaki-san has been one of my inspirations for the Obasute Night View / Legends tour that I provide for our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan. Her idea that 'If the tour is something the guide is enjoying, then the guests will, too,' has really stuck with me.

At this talk, two things she said really hit me: that you have to act on an idea when you first think of it (if you postpone action to another day, you tend to keep putting it off), and the person that has the idea should be the one to act on it (instead of just hoping that other people will do it).

Meeting Ezaki-san was a great chance to feel her 'power' in person!

Footbath in the Fall

青空と紅葉：　パーフェクトな秋のお天気。この頃は戸倉上山田温泉でこんな日々が続いています。今日の温泉街の中心になるカラコロ足湯の様子です。

Blue Sky and Fall Leaves: Perfect autumn weather. Lately we've had a string of days like this. The 'Kara-Koro' footbath in the center of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen looked like this today.

Banquet room's toilet under construction

亀清旅館で毎年、少しずつ改善工事しています。ロビーに薪ストーブの設置、雑木林の中の露天風呂、ヒバの露天風呂、客室の庭のブロック塀を壊して木の塀の取り付け、等など。

旅館の経営者の永遠の悩みは限られた予算の中で、どこから改造をするかと。今年の分は決めました:　２ヶ所のトイレの改造工事。

一つは「松風」という離れ風の客室。今までのトイレは狭くて、なおかつ床が弱ってきていた。今度は広くて、明るいトイレ＋化粧スペースが出来ます。

もう一つは大広間の宴会場の奥のトイレ。今までの宴会のお客様はトイレへ行く度に階段を下りたり上ったりしなきゃいけなかった。今度は気楽で宴会場の直ぐ側のを使えます。

亀清旅館は直す所がまだまだ沢山ある。山ほどある。（沢「山」だから「山ほど」？すみません、アメリカ人ギャグでした。）　でも、こうやって、少しずつ改造していきます。

Kamesei Ryokan has been making improvements to our inn every year. We put in a wood burning stove in the lobby, made 2 outdoor baths, replaced roof tiles, tore down concrete block walls and put up nice wooden fences, etc., etc.

As a ryokan proprietor, one of our constant headaches is how to decide what to fix next with our limited budget. This year's projects have been decided: 2 bathroom remodels.

The first is for one of our semi-detached guestrooms, 'Matsukaze'. It's old toilet was cramped and the floor was getting weaker. So we're remodelling it to make it brighter and more spacious, and adding a mini-powder room.

The second is for our main banquet room. Up until now, the banquet guests have had to walk down the stairs and back up again everytime they used the toilet. Now with this new toilet remodel, they'll be able to use one adjacent to the hall.

With an old inn like Kamesei, it's always a challenge to prioritize what needs fixing next. But every year we keep chipping away at the list, making improvements that will hopefully lead to a more enjoyable experience for our guests.

佐久の誇り:　安養寺ラーメン Pride of Saku: Anyoji Ramen

Thick broth -- just like I like it!

長野県の佐久市は面白い存在だと思う。高速のＩＣや新幹線の駅ができるまでは、「佐久バルーンフェスティバル」という熱気球祭りや、コスモス街道で少し知られました。食事文化で「佐久鯉」の名前はある程度知れれていました。しかし、観光の面では隣の小諸や軽井沢の方が注目を浴びていました。

高速のＩＣや新幹線の駅ができてからは、大手な映画館やショッピングモールも出来たし、「日本三大ケーキの町」と呼ばれて、かなり賑やかになりました。最近は佐久の新しい誇りも出ました:ご当地の味噌ラーメン「安養寺ラーメン」です。

正直って、映画館やモールはアメリカで十分行きました。ケーキも、恐らく女性の方が喜ぶのではないか。でも、この安養寺ラーメンは気になっていまして、先日は初めて食べてみました。佐久市の安養寺は「信州みその発祥の地」と決められたようです。本当かどうか知りませんが、ラーメンにうるさい私にはこのラーメンをまた食べたくなる味でした。

安養寺ラーメンを出している１６件のお店でスタンプラリーを行っています。２０１１年１月１０日まで実施している。１６店舗ともで食べたら、格好良いラーメンボールセットをもらえるので、頑張ってみてください。

Nagano Prefecture's Saku City has seen a rather interesting change take place. Until the freeway interchange and Shinkansen station were built, the city failed to attract much attention. Saku's annual hot air balloon festival and the 'Cosmos Kaido' highway lined with cosmos flowers garnered some seasonal interest, and 'Saku-goi' carp bread for eating was somewhat well-known. But as a whole, it seemed like Saku was just a place you pass through on the way to Komoro or Karuizawa, towns more interesting for sightseeing.

However, after the freeway exit and bullet train station were built, it's like the city really came alive. There's a new movie theater and huge shopping mall, and Saku was declared one of the Top 3 Towns for Sweets (?). Recently, Saku added another to its line of things to be proud of: Anyoji Ramen.

I personally have gone to all the movie theaters and malls that I've needed to back in the States, and I think sweets appeal to ladies more than guys. But Anyoji Ramen really caught my attention. Anyoji is the name of one of Saku's temples, and the area around it is said to be the birthplace of Shinshu (Nagano) Miso. I have no idea whether that's true or not, but the other day I tried Anyoji Ramen for the first time, and I can tell you that this finicky ramen eater gave the miso flavored noodle dish two thumbs up.

Right now, 16 different restaurants that serve Anyoji Ramen are doing a 'stamp rally'. If you eat ramen at all 16 places, you can get a cool ramen bowl set. The rally runs through January 31st, 2011, so get your chopsticks going!

Our new sign

亀清の新しい看板の設置はできました。仕上がりは申す櫛ありますが、どうやって光を照らすかまだ決まっていないけど、取り敢えず、設置してみました。手彫りの木の看板の作りは思ったより、大変でした。でも、亀清の新しい顔として、なかなかいいと思います。如何でしょうか？

Kamesei's new wood sign is in place. I still have to do a few more things to finish it up, and haven't figured out what to do yet with lighting. But the sign is finally in position. Carving the sign took quite a bit longer than I thought, but I'd say it turned out pretty nice. It's a great addition to Kamesei's facade. What do you think?
