記念のケーキ
今日のお客さんでアルジェリアへ引越しする方の送別会が行われました。記念のケーキを頼まれたので温泉のケーキ屋さん、ラヴニールに頼みました。何か特別な記念があれば、このようにラヴニールさんのケーキを喜んで提供いたします。
One group of guests that is staying with us tonight is a farewell party for a person who is moving to Algeria. They wanted a special cake for the special occasion, so we ordered one from our town's cake specialist, L'Avenir.

touches of white
亀清旅館の最新のポケット庭に良く見れば白い色があちらこちらにあります。ガーデナーの岡田さんがこれで明るい空間を作ってくれました。
Upon taking a closer look, I realized that our gardener used white coloring as highlights in our most recently completed garden. Okada-san has created a gentle brightness to the small space.

熊も温泉が好き！
オーストラリアから来たＪａｇｇｅｒｓさん達がこの「旅の熊」を連れて来ました。日本を回りながら色々な人にサインしてもらっている。せっかくでしたから、久万さんが亀清旅館の露天風呂にも入らせました。
The Jaggers party from Australia brought this Travel Bear with them. As the wander around Japan, they get various people to sign their bear. I wrote this little rhyme for the little fellow:
Travel Bear, Travel Bear, where have you been?
I've been to Togakushi and threw some shiriken.
On the walk to Okusha, hugged an ancient cedar tree,
And back to our onsen ryokan to soak at www.kamesei.jp
新しい行灯で落ちくさせるムード
自分で言うのは変かもしれないけれど、自分で作った露天風呂に今度は光りを付けましたので、雰囲気がなかなかいいです。ちょっとした行灯みたいな形です。このやわらかい光りにかけ流し温泉の湯気に、周りの雑木林の庭。。。がちょうど良いムードになります。
I don't mean to brag, but the 'andon' light I added to our outdoor bath creates just the right effect. The soft light from the andon combined with the steam coming off the hot spring mineral water and the native garden in the background creates a very relaxing mood.

大学のころからの友人がまた顔を出してくれて、息子のＴ君を連れて来ました。ロビーで我が息子とおもちゃの車を直していました。亀清のロビーが広いので子供達がたっぷり楽しめる。
A friend of mine from college came to see us today with her son, T. Our son had fun with him working on a toy car. Our lobby has plenty of space for kids to play.
From a Gardener's Eye
日本語得意じゃない私がガーデナーの岡田さんに「亀清の庭はどうやって表現したら良いか」と聞いたら、彼の文書を見させてもらいました。ここで紹介させてもらいます：
樹木の奥に、良質のお湯を湛える手作り露天風呂。
ここは、亀清旅館の露天風呂の庭。青い目の若旦那タイラーさん自慢の百年露天風呂。小さい露天風呂だけど、手作りの味がとてもいい。このお風呂を囲むように作った、雑木林の庭。里山の風景をギュギュっと凝縮したこの庭には、沢山の落葉樹が植わっています。これらの木々が、庭に様々な季節の舞台を運んできます。
樹木の木漏れ日とあたたかい風を感じる、春の新緑。
重なる枝葉の陰影が、涼やかな風を呼ぶ、夏の深緑。
色とりどりに染まる葉が、人の心をとらえる、秋の紅葉。
そして、白一色に染まった木々の梢が、人の心を清めてくれる、冬の雪景色。
その舞台の主役が “もみじ”。もみじはカエデ科カエデ属の落葉高木。緑の葉が赤く紅葉する様子が、色が揉み出されているみたいに見えるところから、色を“揉み出ず（もみいず）”が変化して“もみじ”となったそうです。この庭のもみじは四種。

我が長男は長野の男の子らしく、カブトムシをかっています。亀清のロビーで展示していますので宜しければご覧になってください。息子が一所懸命Ｄｉｓｐｌａｙの箱を格好よくしているので。
Our oldest son is a typical Nagano boy -- he loves to collect horned beetles. Andy has several on display in Kamesei's lobby. He's trying to make the display as cool as possible!
「アメリカにも温泉がありますか？」と良く聞かれます。ある事はあるけれど、日本とは比べにならない。大体２種類がある：
ぬるい３５℃で水着を着て入る健康の為のスパーと、
自然の中で出る、見る為だけの温泉。
例えば、イエローストン国立公園では温泉が沢山ありますが、あくまで見る為だけです。入ってはいけません。３年前に家族で行った時に、温泉がいっぱいあるけど入れなかったつらい思い出があります。
ニュースでその１つでは新しく開いた温泉に観光客が落ちて、火傷してしまったそうです。７７℃でした！
I often get asked if America has onsens, too. There are, but nothing compared to Japan. Basically, there are two types, lukewarm mineral baths that people wear bathing suits for, and natural hot springs that are enjoyed for viewing only. Yellowstone Nat'l Park has hundreds of onsens, but only for looking at -- you'd get arrested if you try bathing in one. When our family went 3 years ago, we really wanted to take a bath in one of the onsens!
In the news, there was a story about a new onsen opening up, and a tourist falling in and burning her leg in the 171°F water! As per the following link:

葛尾城からの眺め
戸倉上山田温泉の周りに緑の山が沢山あります。今日みたいな天気のいい日にその山を登りたくなります。うちの僕達と近所の子を連れて、戸倉の磯部から五里ヶ峰の半分ぐらいにある葛尾城までハイキングしました。休憩を取りながら、１時間半ぐらいかかりました。途中で村上吉清の歴史スポットがあって、昨日の侍の存在を感じながら今日の自然を楽しめるハイクです。なおかつ、千曲川が真ん中に流れる戸倉上山田温泉を上から見て、北アルプスもその裏で出ていて、すごく綺麗な眺めです。信州はやはりいいね！
Our spa town, Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, is surrounded by beautiful green mountains. On nice days like today, you feel a natural urge to hike up one of them. I took our two sons and a neighber kid, and starting at Togura's Isobe, we climbed half-way up Gorigamine (aka Gorilla Mountain) to the remains of Katsurao Castle. Along the trail are historical spots used by the samurai who defended the castle, so you can enjoy the hints from yesterday of the samurai along with the beautiful nature of today. And the view from the top is spectacular -- the onsen of town Togura-Kamiyamada with the Chikuma River meandering through the middle, with the Northern Alps forming the backdrop. Nagano is such a great place to live!

亀清旅館の作りは主に平屋の木造であちらこちらに庭がある作りです。ところどころに緑があって、落ち着かせる雰囲気です。但し、その庭は大分長い間に手入れされていなかったので多少さびしくなっています。これからは庭をちょっとずつ綺麗にしていく計画を立てております。去年の露天風呂の庭を始め、今月は渡り廊下の一部の庭をガーデナーの岡田さんに頼んで改造しました。「庭を見る為に亀清に来ました」という声を聞こえるのは楽しみにしております。
Kamesei Ryokan's design is mostly 1-story wood structure, with gardens here and there throughout, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. However, the gardens haven't been updated for many moons, and are getting rather dated. Starting with the garden for the outdoor bath last year, we are renewing our gardens one by one. Here is our gardener, Okada-san, putting the final touches on one of the gardens off the watari-rouka corridor. I am looking forward to the day when guests say they came to Kamesei to see our gardens!
