赤提灯が温泉の本通りに光る

戸倉上山田温泉の町興し「カラコロにぎわい協議会」の空き店舗活性事業＃４：居酒屋のあさりちゃんです。今月にオープンしました。さっそく、行ってみた。温泉の本通り沿いと言う素晴らしい位置で、温かい日は窓の全部をオープンにして、明るいオーナーとスタッフでにぎやかなスポットになりました。戸倉上山田の新しい宝物が生まれました。マスターに「鉄板で何かを焼いてちょうだい。お任せ！」と言ったら、スペシャルメニューを作ってくれました。嬉しかった！

Togura Kamiyamada's Kara-Koro civic improvement organization's 4th Empty Store Front Revitalization Project is this pub "Asari-chan". It just opened at the beginning of the month, and I went to check it out. It's position on our onsen town's main street is a prime location, and on warm evenings like this, they open all the doors to the street. This welcoming environment is mirrored by the warm greetings of the owner and the staff. I asked the master to fix me something funky on his griddle and he prepared a "special menu" veggie and pork stir fry for me. It went oh so nicely with the pint of draft beer.

Togura Kamiyamada has a new 'takara' (treasure) on its main street -- come and check it out!

クールジャパンは秋葉原以外にもあります。秋葉原からかなり離れた所で見付けます。知り合いのＵｄｏさん（オーストリア生まれ）が古民家を探して、壊される前に残っている家具を引き取って、修理して、販売するという仕事をしています。昔からの箪笥は本当に宝物。それこそ、クールジャパン。欧米ではない作り、ない木材、ない金具、ない色合い。ものすごく魅力を感じます。

そしてＵｄｏさんの腕がまた上手で、自然な素材のＷａｘを使っったりして、綺麗に修理しています。この箪笥は今度、亀清旅館の一つな客室の床の間に持っていきます。亀清のクールどもアップ！

"Cool Japan" isn't limited to Akihabara. In fact, it can be found far from Akihabara. Far, far away, like in old homes in the countryside: classic furniture like the "tansu" chest. For us Westerners, the antique tansu are fascinating. The craftsmanship, types of wood used, the metal fittings, the aged colors are all things you simply can't find in the West.

My buddy Udo, who hails from Austria, goes to old homes before they are torn down and picks up pieces of antique furniture. He takes them back to his shop and refurbishes them, and polishes them using all natural waxes. This tansu is going to go in the tokonoma alcove in one of our guest rooms. This will give Kamesei Ryokan a new touch of Japanese 'cool'!

The future is here

全国の旅館青年部の臨時総会の為に今日はまた東京へ行きました。臨時総会前に青年部の皆が国会議員さんへの陳情活動しました。私には国会議員の事務所へ行くのは初めてでした。ちょうど管vs.小澤の選挙の日でしたから、皆さんの緊張を感じました。
我が青年部の選挙もその日でした。地元の森晃さん（野沢温泉さかや旅館）が全旅連青年部長を目指したが、残念でした。森さん、おしかったですね。

さて、そういう訳で、ついでに赤坂でちょっとうろうろしました。うろうろしている時に、ある看板の表紙が動いていました事を気付いて、良く見たら、タッチスクリーンの案内看板でした。なおかつ、「Ｅｎｇｌｉｓｈ」のボタンを押せば全部が英字に切り替えた。凄い！これは便利だ！地元の人にも、日本人観光客にも、外国人観光客にも便利だ。将来的にこういう看板が増えるのかな？

（ちなみに、もう一つ「すごいな」と思った理由があった:　普通な道路の普通な壁に普通に置いてあった事。日本は治安が良い国だな。アメリカだったら、こういう看板は絶対にいたずらされちゃう。悲しい…）

Japan's Junior Ryokan Association held a national meeting in Tokyo today so once again I had to ride the Nagano Shinkansen in to the capital. This time, though, was a bit special -- us innkeepers paid a visit to our lawmakers in the capital. It was my first time to visit their offices. Today happened to be the Kan vs. Ozawa election. You could feel the tension in the air! It was also election day for our Junior Ryokan Association. Akira Mori from nearby Nozawa Onsen (Sakaya Ryokan) was in the running but came up just a tad short. Too bad, Akira-san!

Anyways, that explains why I was in Tokyo today. I had a bit of time, so I checked out the Akasaka streetscene. As I was walking, a sign caught my eye -- because it was moving. It was a digital touchscreen guide. Maps, restaurant locations, all kinds of cool info. It even had an "English" button to show everything in English. Way cool! And convenient! Not only for locals, but for tourists, Japanese and foreign alike. I hope signs like this become more prevalent in the future.

As a side note, something else that surprised me about the sign was that it was located on a regular road, situated on a regular wall, with no special indications or anything at all. Like it was totally normal. Back in the States, if you stuck a sign like that on some side street, it wouldn't last a day before getting vandalized...

敬老の日の運動 Respecting the Aged

Volunteering at the local Old Folks Home

来週の月曜日が敬老の日です。地元の老人ホームはそれに合わせて、近所の人達を呼んで、皆様に音楽をやったりお話ししたりしています。私の友人がそのホームで勤めていて、そして私にも声をかけました。

その関係で、昨日はうちの子供たちを連れて、このアットホームと言う老人ホームに行きました。ホームの皆様に地元の伝説の語りべ、そして獅子笛の演奏（ほんの少し！私だって、まだまだ勉強中）させて頂きました。皆さんが喜んでくれたでしょうか？一番年上の方が100歳でした。なんとなく笑ってくれたような気がします。

日々の旅館の仕事や町おこしの仕事も大事だけど、こういう敬老の日のボランティアーも大事だね。

New Faucets for the Onsen

亀清旅館のお風呂の蛇口を取り返ました。自動的に止まるタイプにしました。この方は「つけっぱなし」の問題を防ぐことができるので、「エコ」のやり方です。高かったけど、こういう改善も必要ですね。悲しい事は、今は新品でピカピカですが、上山田の温泉成分が強くて、一年以内に黒くなってしまうでしょう。仕方がないね。

蛇口取り換え以外、お風呂場のタイルもプロのクリーニング屋さんに磨いてもらいました。見事に新品の様に戻りました。しかし、常連のお客様に「汚い方が良かった;温泉の証拠だった」と言われました。そのうちに成分がまた付くよ！

New Map in the News Again

昨日の日経新聞の長野版で最近に出来た戸倉上山田温泉の英語の散歩地図・グルメガイドが掲載されました。外国人目線で作ったマップという事、注目を浴びています。亀清旅館に泊まっているお客さんにも喜ばれています。「こんなに分かり易い、便利なマップは日本で初めて見た！」と、この地図がなければ分からなかったレストラン、お店を楽しまれた。

そして、先日の東京への宣伝キャラバンで、主な出版社にも褒めて頂きました。「私たちも参考になりました！レストランの説明は特に分かり易かった」と言ってくれました。

これで戸倉上山田温泉のイメージアップになっていけばいいよね。

Yesterday's Nagano version of the Nikkei newspaper had an article on Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's new English Walking Map / Gourmet Guide. They liked the fact that it was designed by foreigners for foreigners. Lots of our foreigner guests here at Kamesei have been using the map lately. I've gotten comments from our guests that no other town in Japan has such easy to understand and helpful information. Using the map, they were able to experience new restaurants and shops that they otherwise would not have known about.

And during my marketing "caravan" to Tokyo the last couple of days, several publishers commented favorably on the map, too. One major map maker went so far as to say they learned some tips from my map, especially about the friendly way the various restaurants were introduced.

I hope the map is helping to further improve the image of our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada.

First Pasmo, then JR East Pass, what's next?

今回の東京への宣伝キャラバンでＰＡＳＭＯを買いました。

生まれてから初めて買いました。

どれだけ楽か、良く分かってきました。料金を計算したり、毎回毎回切符を買ったりなどの手間の全てが消えます。地下鉄にもＪＲにもバスにも使えて、便利でした。

仕事で来ている私には楽だったら、旅行者にはさらに便利でしょう。

長野県も、こういうパスが欲しいと前から言い続いています。自分自身で東京で体験してきたので、さらに言い続きたくなりました。今回のＪＲデスティネーションキャンペーンに合わせて、ＪＲ東日本は特別なパスを海外の旅行者に提供しています。9月から11月末で、三日間（連続じゃなくても良い）で普通・特急・新幹線の電車に利用ができる。なおかつ、歴史上初めてでＪＲだけじゃなくて、戸倉上山田温泉に使うしなの鉄道やスノーモンキーに使う長野電鉄などの私鉄にも利用が出来ます。ＪＲと私鉄の連携は初めてです。

残念ながら、観光ビザで来ている外国人しか使えない（日本に住んでいる外国人および日本人にＮＧ）、バスは含まれていない（戸隠や上高地などはＮＧ），期間限定になっている。でも、この基礎から、将来的にもっと幅広く使えるパスが出来るのではないかと、ＰＡＳＭＯを初めて使った私が望んでいます。

On this marketing "caravan" to Tokyo, I bought a Pasmo transportation pass.

For the first time in my life.

No more hassles figuring out the fares, no more stopping to buy tickets. How convenient. I used it not only for the subway but for busses and the JR trains, too.

If it makes moving around easy for me on business, it must be even more convenient for tourists!

I've been calling for a similar pass for Nagano, too, for years. Now, in conjunction with the Nagano Destination Campaign, JR East is offering a special 3-Day Pass from September to the end of November. It can even be used on non-consecutive days. And, for the first time ever, it is also useable on Shinano Railway (for access to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen), Nagano Dentetsu (to get you to the Snow Monkeys) and other private railroads.

Unfortunately, it's only available for use by foreigners on tourist visas (foreign residents and regular Japanese can't use it), it can't be used on busses (so no Togakushi or Kamikochi), and it's only available for a limited time. But it's a great start. And from someone who has now seen how convenient such passes can be, I for one really hope for an even broader-use pass in the future.

いよいよ信州ＤＣ　JR's Nagano Campaign is almost here

Promoting Nagano in Tokyo with Arukuma

9日、10日は戸倉上山田温泉の旅館組合の皆様と東京への宣伝「キャラバン」。10月1日から始まる予定のＪＲデスティネーションキャンペーン「未知を歩こう信州」に合わせて、沢山の旅行エージェントやメディア関係の事務所を回ったり、県主催の商談会であったりしました。この「あるくま君」が信州ＤＣのマスコットです。

前の日は長野市に呼ばれて、ＤＣの期間中で外国人観光客も増えるだろうという事で、長野の市民50人に「外国人の求めるおもてなし」の講演をさせて頂きました。なるべく、私もこのＤＣに貢献しています！

On the 9th and 10th, the other members of the Togura Kamiyamada Ryokan Association and I are making a whirlwind 'caravan' marketing tour of Tokyo. It's part of the PR push ahead of Japan Rail's Nagano "Destination Campaign", scheduled to start on October 1st and to run through December 31st. Our caravan is making stops at several media outlets, and will meet with lots of travel agents at a Nagano Prefecture-organized sales gathering. This apple-bear "arukuma" is the mascot for JR's Destination Campaign.

The day before, Nagano City invited me to give a talk to 50 residents. An increase in foreigners is also expected as part of the DC, so I gave some tips on what it is tourists from abroad expect when they come to Japan. I'm doing my part to help make the DC a success.

「テレビで見たよ！」とか、「テレビに出ましたよね」

良くお客さんに言われます。

どう答えれば良いかといつも困っていました。「お陰様で」とか。

良い答えはやっと分かりました：「これから」。

先日は生まれてからパワーポイントのスライドショーを作りました。外国人の目線で、この戸倉上山田温泉のこれからの町おこし案という事で、旅館組合や市役所に発表しました。私はこちらに引っ越ししてからはそろそろ5年になります。その間、ＪＴＢの支援金の事業で銀座通り商店街の立ち上がりや「おらんちいっぴんマップ」など、県からの支援金でカラコロ足湯や空き店舗対策でいい結果が出ているし、いい基礎が出来ています。その継続で今度は外国人観光客の要望でのこれからの行事の提案を出させていただきました。なおかつ、その案の全ては日本人観光客も喜ばれる事ばかり。色んな気掛け、色んなタイミングがちょうど重なって、うまく行けそうです。

これからの努力がさらにテレビに出るのではないかと思います。

"I saw you on TV!"

I get told that a lot by our guests. I'm never quite sure how to reply. "Thank you," I usually lamely reply.

But now I know how to better reply: "You haven't seen anything, yet!"

The other day, for the first time in my life, I prepared a demonstration using powerpoint software. I used it to make a presentation to the Togura Kamiyamada ryokan association, as well as to the folks at city hall. It's been almost 5 years since we made the move to Kamesei Ryokan, and during that time I've seen the good results of the 3-year JTB-funded civic improvement efforts, then the 3-year prefectural-funded "Kara-Koro" civic effort. Now, building on those results, I'm proposing some new ideas for the town based on opinions of our guests from overseas. Through a strange confluence of events, my proposals are making good headway.
