Japan's Rainy Season Feels Refreshing to This Seattleite

June 23, 2013: グルメFoodie

Rainy season has finally come to our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. It's officially been 'Tsuyu' for a few weeks, but this weekend we finally saw real rain. People in Japan tend to get depressed over the rainy season, but for this Seattleite, the rain brings a sense of comfort. (Back in Seattle, the rainy season typically starts around January 1st and ends sometime near December 31st, with a brief respite for about 2 days in August.)

Pictured are rain drops on the hydrangea flowers -- a typically serene scene for Nagano's rainy season.

Lindera umbellata -- A gift from Kamesei's Gardener to our guests

Culture Shock

Kamesei Ryokan's "100-Year Bath" outdoor bath was made by hand by myself. In other words, a gift from me to our guests.

The bath's garden was designed and built by our gardener, Okada-san. Along the approach to the bath, he planted a Lindera umbellata shrub. Its common name is a "spicebush".

I researched a bit about the spicebush, and apparently its fruit has a flavor similar to allspice. It goes well as a seasoning for meat and pastries. With the fruit maturing the same time as apple season, the spicebush berries are an excellent compliment to apples, as well. The branches can be used as an ingredient to make tea, native Americans used to use spiceberry as medication for colds.

That is all fine and dandy, but for me my favorite aspect of the spicebush is the wonderful scent the branches give off as you rub them while walking by, as our guests do when walking to enter the 100-Year Bath.

In other words, a gift from our gardener to our guests.

Lindera umbellata

Hotaro no Sato Firefly Tour: June 21st & 22nd to be the Best

Kamesei Ryokan

20 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is the Shimo-Shiojiri Hotaru no Sato, home to hundreds of fireflies. Hotaru (as they are called in Japanese) are a rare sight in Japan these days. The locals here protect the environment to preserve the firefly habitat, and hold a Hotaru Festival for people to come and enjoy seeing the fireflies dancing in the air. I went to the 18th and we were rewarded by seeing approximately 350 fireflies. With the rain on the 19th and 20th, over 1000 fireflies are expected on the nights of Friday June 21st and Saturday June 22nd.

Our local tourism association runs Firefly Festival Tours departing from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen at 8pm. For 2013, the tours will take place June 19th to the 23rd. Price is 1000 yen.

One of the people that went to see the fireflies was from Osaka. She was so happy to see natural hotaru. Apparently in the big cities, hotels bring in fireflies from the countryside and release them to perish in their hotel gardens. If people are so desperate to see fireflies, I highly suggest they come to Nagano instead and see them in their natural environment!

Sugadaira Awaits the 2019 Rugby World Cup

June 18, 2013: その他 Miscellaneous

With its incredible selection of sports fields (108 rugby fields!) and high-altitude training grounds, Sugadaira is known as Japan's rugby mecca. Teams from Japan's top schools come here to train in the summer. Japan has been selected to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, due in no small part to Sugadaira, I'm sure.

Recently the Nagano Prefecture Junior Ryokan Association held a mini-soccer tournament in Sugadaira. We got to play on one of those top-grade sports fields. Compared to the real athletes that usually compete here, no doubt we looked like bumbling idiots. But with that awesome field and the Sugadaira's stunning mountains as our backdrop, I can definitely understand the area's popularity with sports teams.

After the soccer games, we gathered for another Sugadaira specialty -- a barbecue. I hope the international athletes that gather here in 2019 will get to experience this side of Sugadaira, too.

After the game: Barbecue!

Sugadaira: Japan's Salad Bowl

June 18, 2013: 季節 Seasons

Besides being a mecca for rugby with all of the sports fields, Sugadaira is also Japan's salad bowl. Nagano's high altitude 1200m growing areas are perfect for growing lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and other vegetables. At Sugadaira, rugby grounds are interspersed with innnumerable lettuce fields.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we get deliveries straight from the farmers and feature fresh Sugadaira lettuce in our summer menu. Come taste the difference!

Kyohoen's Partially-Fresh Apricots On Sale at Kamesei Ryokan

Kamesei Ryokan

Local Togura-Kamiyamada apricot orchardist Kyohoen has used a proprietary method to develop 'Han-nama' (="partially fresh") apricots. Not fresh and not dried, but somewhere in between, these Han-nama apricots still have the full apricot flavor and a consistency close to that of fresh apricots.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, in honor of the aprioct fruit harvest season, our chef has incorportated these Han-nama apricots into his menu. And at our front desk, we are offering the Han-nama apricots for sale as souvenirs to our guests.

Come try tasting the true flavor of apricots!

First Apricots of the Season! Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen Apricot Picking News

Kamesei Ryokan

Kyohoen is our local apricot orchardist here at our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. I poked my head into their office the other day and was rewarded with a bowl of first-of-the-season apricots. There's nothing like the tartness of a fresh-picked apricot! Have you ever tasted one? This spring, how about coming to Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen and picking apricots yourself?

Here in Chikuma City, the Mori district is known as Japan's #1 'apricot village'. The blossoms in early April are so famous that this year even the emperor and empress came to see them. Mori is a 20-minute drive from our onsen town. A short 15-minute walk away, along the Chikuma River, are the apricot orchards of the Sarashina district. And Kyohoen Apricot Orchards are one of the most modern growers, trying to develop better varieties and using cutting-edge techniques to maximize yield.

This past April our area had some devastating low temperatures that are effecting the apricot trees' production. But the folks at Kyohoen believe strongly in giving guests to our onsen town the opportunity to enter the apricot field and pick fruit themselves. This year's apricot picking schedule is as follows:

Apricot Picking 2013Kyohoen Orchard near Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen
Office: 1092-2 Wakamiya, Chikuma City, Nagano
Tel: (026)276-6018 Kaneko-san (limited English)
Apricot Picking Start: Around 24-June (Monday)
Apricot Picking End: Around 05-July (Friday)
Price: 1000 yen per Kilogram (Showa variety)

Reasons to Come to Nagano

The azaleas around Kamesei Ryokan's koi pond are still in bloom. Pictured is our daughter Misaki feeding the koi.

That tanuki looks a bit hungry, too...
