RKBラジオ藤岡の赤司プロデューサーと中島リポーターが戸倉上山田温泉にやってきました。長野県観光課と千曲市観光協会の紹介で我が亀清旅館に泊まってくれました。藤岡と信州は松本空港・FDA航空会社でつないでいるので、藤岡の皆様に信州の魅力を伝える「さわか信州リポート」という番組がある。

既に信州の穴場が詳しい赤司さんと中島さんに負けない様にさらに穴場的なうんちくを込めて、一生懸命ガイドしました。おしぼりうどんの辛さ、射的の懐かしさ、姨捨からの善光寺平の夜景の美しさ、とにかくディープな戸倉上山田温泉を案内しました。

私は青い目の若旦那として特に海外からの旅行者に信州・戸倉上山田の良さを伝えたいと考えていたけど、ある意味で福岡も一応、海外となるので九州の皆様にも是非、情報を発信したいと思いました。

松本市観光大使ともなっている赤司さん、福岡信州会幹事となっている中島様、大変お世話になりました。これからも是非、宜しくお願い致します。九州からの応援をお願いしま～す！

Producer Akashi-san and Reporter Nakajima-san from Fujioka's RKB Radio paid a visit to Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen. Nagano Prefecture and Chikuma City asked us here at Kamesei Ryokan to host the two and show them our onsen town. Nagano and Fujioka are connected via Matsumoto Airport - FDA Airline, and RKB Radio features a program showcasing Nagano's highlights to everyone in Kyushu.

Akashi-san and Nakajima-san already know a lot of Nagano's lesser-known places, so it was a challenge being their tour guide. Hopefully they were impressed, and will share news about Togura-Kamiyamada to Kyushu.

千曲市に千曲川が眺めるレストランはやっとできます♪

（川魚料理のつけば小屋はもちろん、川辺ですが、通年ではなくはやと鮎の時期だけな仮説なお店。）

県道338号線を姨捨駅まで登って行く途中で「さらしなの里　展望館」というお店は7月3日にオープンの予定お昼はお蕎麦中心、夜は居酒屋です。

先日は若女将と二人で呼ばれて、プレーオープンでごちそうになりました。その日は雨で曇っていましたが、それでも善光寺平を見下ろす景色が感動的でした。新しいオーナーの森さんと深澤さんはお店の内装も整備していて、お二人の熱意が伝われました。

ある旅館の先輩に言われたが、日本人はお店を作る時にその位置を考えない癖があると。千曲市は正にそうです。川が見えるお店が全くない。私の地元のシアトルの一番好きなレストランはダウンタウンからエリオット湾の向こう側、海沿いにある。夕食を食べながら夕日が超高層ビルに反射してその素敵な絵を楽しめる。景色のあるお店として最高。

千曲市の新しい「展望館」からの眺めはきっと負けないぐらいな素敵な絵になると思う。是非、応援したいと思っています！

Chikuma City is finally getting a restaurant with a view of its namesake Chikuma River.

(There are of course the Tsukeba river shacks that serve river fish, but they are only seasonal and in temporary structures.)

The Tenbokan restaurant is scheduled to open on July 3rd, 2013. Located on an outcropping on County Route 338 on the way up to Obasute Station, Tenbokan overlooks the Chikuma River valley and the Zenkoji Plain. They will feature soba noodles for lunch, and broaden the menu as an izakaya for dinner.

One of my ryokan elders once told me that the Japanese have a bad tendency to not consider the surroundings when building restaurants or hotels. That seems to be the case here in Chikuma City since, despite having the beautiful mountains and majestic river, there aren't any restaurants situated as to take in the view. My favorite restaurant back in Seattle is Salty's on Alki. It is located across Elliot Bay from downtown. While eating dinner, the setting sun reflects in the windows of the skyscrapers making for a magical scene -- a perfect example of designing the building to take advantage of the view.

Chikuma City's new view restaurant, Tenbokan, will hopefully fill that role for our town.

亀清旅館の「100年風呂」露天風呂はこの青い目の若旦那の手作り作品です。つまり、私からお客様へのおもてなしの一つです。

このお風呂の庭は亀清の庭師、岡田さんの作品です。雑木林とのテーマで、お陰様で100年風呂は秘湯の様な雰囲気。

お風呂のアプローチに岡田さんが『 クロモジ （ Lindera umbellata) 』を植えてくれました。岡田さんによると、
山地に生える樹木で、高さ2～4mぐらいになります。
樹皮や材にさわやかな香気があり、昔からクロモジの枝をつかって、和菓子の爪楊枝（ツマヨウジ）がつくられています。
との事だそうです。

クロモジの英名はスパイスブッシュです。調べたら、実はオールスパイスの様な味がして、お肉の味付けに最適だそうです。そして、りんごのみと同じ時期になるの、りんごとの組み合わせも良いらしい。枝は御茶にも使えるし、北米のネイティブは風邪薬に使ったそうです。

まあ、その奥深い所は別として、お客様が100年風呂に入る時に必ずこの植物の側に通ります。そうすると、枝に当たったら、良い香りがする訳です。

つまり、庭師からのおもてなしです。

Kamesei Ryokan's "100-Year Bath" outdoor bath was made by hand by myself. In other words, a gift from me to our guests.

The bath's garden was designed and built by our gardener, Okada-san. Along the approach to the bath, he planted a Lindera umbellata shrub. Its common name is a "spicebush".

I researched a bit about the spicebush, and apparently its fruit has a flavor similar to allspice. It goes well as a seasoning for meat and pastries. With the fruit maturing the same time as apple season, the spicebush berries are an excellent compliment to apples, as well. The branches can be used as an ingredient to make tea, native Americans used to use spiceberry as medication for colds.

That is all fine and dandy, but for me my favorite aspect of the spicebush is the wonderful scent the branches give off as you rub them while walking by, as our guests do when walking to enter the 100-Year Bath.

In other words, a gift from our gardener to our guests.
