'Tsugaru' variety
週末に来てくれた地元のお客様から採れたてのりんごを頂きました。子のりんごが「津軽」と言う種類です。私の一番好きな種類の尼すっぱい「紅玉」もそろそろ出るかな？
Last weekend we had some guests from the local area, and they brought us a treat: some apples they had just picked. That means apple season has officially started. Nagano is the #2 prefecture in Japan for apple production. My favorite variety is the sour 'kougyoku' one, perfect for baking apple pies.

私の生まれたところは日曜日の朝が教会へ行く時です。日本に来て、驚いたのは教会へ行く方が少ないし、代わりに皆がごみ・リサイクルをする。今日が当番でした。朝５時半から起きて、布団は３４枚も上げて、そしてごみ当番。旅館の若旦那の生活です。
Back on my home planet, Sunday mornings are for going to church. Here in Japan, Sunday mornings are for gathering your recyclable garbage. Today was our turn to man the garbage station. Wake up at 5:30am, flip 34 futons, and be the neighborhood garbage man.

チャリ乗り二人
Jimenezの兄弟がＭｅｘｉｃｏから来ています。温泉のレンタルサイクルを楽しみ。The Jimenez brothers from Mexico, enjoying riding around town on rental bicycles.

露天風呂の庭の為にガーデンデザイナーと今日打ち合わせしました。図面が段々とそろってきましたので９月末上記する予定です。それまでに露天風呂の完成が出来るかな？
Today I met with our garden designer to finalize the plans for our outdoor bath's garden. The last week of September is our target for installation.

戸倉創造観光民間
戸倉の公民館が定期的に市民講座を開き、今日は私に喋る様に頼んでくれました。以前に松本大学でやった講演のテーマ：｢外国人(欧米人)はどう言うおもてなしを求めているか｣でした。１０月に今度は上山田公民館で又やる予定です。
The Togura Souzoukan Community Center across the river from our onsen town puts on a regular series of talks by various speakers. Today they had me give the speech. I based it on one I'd done previously for Matsumoto University: What kind of service do foreigners expect in Japan.

Mom and Misaki
Here it is late August, and the hot days are continuing. At least it gives our little Misaki-chan a chance to wear her sun dress from Grandma.
８月の後半でまだこの残暑が続いている。でも、このお陰で我娘、美咲ちゃん、がグランマ空もらった夏用のドレスが着れる。
All those years of experience playing in the sand box finally paying off
この夏は亀清旅館に露天風呂を作っています。お風呂実態は入れる状態で、今度は庭です。まずは沢山の土が要ります。町の建設会社から土を頂ける事になっていますので今日は土袋を持って行って、ショベルカーを借りて、積みました。(初体験でした。面白かった！）
Our summer project here at Kamesei Ryokan is to build an outdoor bath. The bath is partially finished so now I have to start on the garden. A local construction company offered to give us dirt so I took some bags (yes, dirt bags) and borrowed their power shovel and filled them today. That was a lot of fun!

楽しそう！
今朝、尾崎様のお子さん達が亀清の中庭の池の鯉にえさをやってくれました。有難う！鯉が嬉しそうに食べた。
This morning, the Ozaki party's children fed our koi fish in the pond in our naka-niwa garden. The fish sure looked happy!

縄文人になろう！
戸倉上山田温泉から車で１０分ぐらいで｢さらしなの里 古代体験パーク｣があります。写真の様に、縄文時代の建物があって、歴史資料館もあるので子供達が縄文の時代の体験が出来ます。石の飾り作り、火の付け方、土器作りなど、楽しいこといっぱい！
'Sarashina Ancient Experience Park' is about 10 minutes from Kamesei by car. Here you can see real-sized replicas of dwellings from the Jomon Era, and try your hand at many different types of pre-historic arts and crafts. Our kids enjoyed making stone pendants today.
