お客様の送迎のついでに、うちの子供達を須坂の「とレインギャラリー長野」に連れて来ました。オーナーの深澤さんともお会いできて、特別にショーをやって頂きました。うちのAndyとKenが大喜び。（実は、2人のパパも喜んでいました！）
深澤さんによると、ギャラリーのとつないでいるレストランのそばもとんかつも美味しいそうです。そのジェラートのサービス券を扱っておりますので行きたい方はどうぞ、申し付けて下さい。亀清旅館から来るまで40分ぐらいです。
I had to drive to Suzaka to pick up some guests, so along the way I took our kids to "Train Gallery Nagano". We got to meet the owner, Fukasawa-san. He even put on a special demonstration for us of his miniature trains. Our kids really enjoyed it (as well as their dad!).
Fukazawa-san says the soba and tonkatsu in the adjoining restaurant are pretty good, and he gave us some coupons for free gelatto. So any of our guests that are interested in taking their kids to see the train display can ask us for the gelatto coupons, too.

亀清旅館のロビーのピアノのピアノは年に一度の調律が行われました。調律師の五味さんの手が上手いです。
こうやってピアノの修理を見ると、懐かしいです。私の前に人生（3年前に旅館の跡継ぎの為に引越しするまで）に貿易会社に勤めていました。色々扱っている中で、（先日は木材の事も書いたと思いますが）1つはこういう中古ピアノでした。亀清のロビーにピアノは毎日に弾かれています（ピアノを習っている長男やお客様に）けど、日本はそくら中に眠っているピアノは沢山あります。そのピアノはアメリカで人気です。木をたっぷり使った日本製中古ピアノかプラスチックが多い中国製の新品ピアノの選択なら、やはりYamahaやKawai。
Our lobby's piano received its once-a-year tuning at the able hands of local tuner, Gomi-san. Seeing the insides of the piano brought back lots of memories. In my previous life (before moving here to help out at Kamesei Ryokan 3 years ago), I worked at a trading company in Seattle. As I recently mentioned here on the blog, one of the many things we handled was lumber. Another was: used pianos like this shipped from Japan that we distributed wholesale in the States. Our piano gets used frequently -- by our son Andy who is studying piano and by our guests. But there are hundreds, thousands of pianos throughout Japan that were bought for daughters who have grown up and out. The pianos now just sit and collect dust. They are in strong demand in the States, where someone who is looking at buying a piano often compares one of these old but sturdy used Yamaha or Kawai with a mostly plastic, made in China new piano.

戸倉駅にお客様にお迎えに行った時の写真です。駅ビルから出て最初に見る風景です。皆様の代一印象はどうですかね。
戸倉上山田温泉からの距離が２ｋｍの最寄駅です。我々旅館が随時にお客様の送迎しております。戸倉駅がこの温泉の日本交通ネットとのライフラインです。
戸倉駅の方から見れば、戸倉上山田温泉はどんな存在でしょうか？まあ、これだけな「温泉へようこそ」アーチがあるという事は存在が大きいでしょう。
3月に戸倉駅の一個下に「千曲」という新しい駅が出来る予定です。しなの鉄道にせっかくこの変更があるから、戸倉駅の名前も「戸倉上山田温泉」駅に変更すると言う案があったそうです。残念ながら実現が無理らしいです。変更する機会は恐らく2度と来ないからやった方が良いと思いましたが。
長野あさま新幹線が出来るまで、JR特急あさまが戸倉駅に止まりました。「特急がなくなったせいで温泉が静かになった」という声が良く耳に入ります。どうでしょうかね。新幹線が止まるようになれば、日帰りのお客さんが増えるだけという説もある。私が思いますが、東京からいらっしゃるお客様は新幹線で上田か長野まで来て、ローカル線のしなの鉄道に乗って戸倉に下りて、私がお迎えにするというのは旅らしい旅じゃないですか？皆様のお越しをお待ちしております。
I took this photo as I waited for some of this evening's guests to come off the train at Togura Station. This is the 1st sight our guests who come by train see. I wonder what kind of 1st impression everyone gets.
Togura Station is only 2km from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, and is our life-line to Japan's transportation network. But how important is the Onsen to the station? Judging by this huge Welcome sign, I would say it's pretty big.
A new station one stop down line is scheduled to open in March. There was a proposal to at the same time change the name of our station to "Togura Kamiyamada Onsen". But apparently the proposal was not approved due to the costs related with changing the signs, etc.
Before the Nagano Shinkansen bullet train was built, Togura used to be a main stop on the "Asama" Special Express train from Nagano to Ueno (Tokyo). Every once in a while I hear people say that one of the reasons our onsen is so quiet is the Shinkansen doesn't stop here. However, if you ask me, being on a bullet train line would make it convenient to come for just the day and not spend the night. As it is now, guests from Tokyo take the Shink to Ueda or Nagano, change to the local Shinano Railway and get off Togura Station, where I meet them to take them to our inn. That sounds like a proper way to make a "journey".

この戸倉上山田温泉ではラーメン屋さんが多いです。話によると、人口の一人当たりのラーメン屋の数が日本一だそうです。取り敢えず、亀清旅館の周りに何件があるか、長男と一緒に歩いてみました。亀清の目の前の店を含んで、徒歩5分の範囲で12件もありました。多いなと思いましたが、内の近辺だけでそれだけがあれば、温泉街の全体で50件ぐらいあるでしょう。ラーマンパラダイスですね！

一般的の常識で、軽い知り合いの中で政治と宗教の話しは止めた方がよいといいます。長野県で、さらに「どこのそばが美味しいか」という話しも止めた方が良いらしいです。（けんかになるから。）この戸倉上山田温泉で「どこのラーメンが上手い」も難しい質問でしょうね。

皆様、どうぞ、どのラーメンが一番美味しいか、試してみてください。

There are lots of ramen shops here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. I once heard that we have more ramen shops per capita than anywhere else in Japan (for that matter, probably the world). I took one of our sons out tonight for a walk around our neighborhood to count the ramen joints. Starting with the one across the street from Kamesei Ryokan, we counted 12 in a 5 minute radius. If there are 12 just in our neighborhood, there must be about 50 throughout the entire onsen.

It's common sense to avoid talking about politics and religion with casual acquaintances. Here in Nagano, there is one more taboo subject: which soba restaurant is the best. (That always leads to heated arguments -- we are passionate about our soba here.) Furthermore, here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, it's probably also difficult to talk about which ramen shop is the best. You'll just have to come and decide for yourself!





薪の小屋 Wood Shed

亀清旅館の玄関の横に薪用の小屋を作りました。ある材料を使って、結局1500円ぐらいで作れました。これからは来冬に向かってまきを集まらなきゃ。この新しい小屋きちんと乾燥させれる。そして、玄関も整理が出来ます。
その1500円は12'の2x4，3本の為でした。よく見たら、カナダのマークがありました。懐かしかったです。私の以前の人生（旅館の跡継ぎの為に来る前まではシアトルで貿易関係で勤めておりました）、北米から日本へ木材を多分１０００TEU（貨物のコンテナー）以上も手配した。私が今度その同じ木材の消費者になるのは不思議です。
Now I can add one more item to my list of personal accomplishments: I built a wood shed. A pretty darn dandy one if you ask me. And thanks to using mostly materials on hand, it only cost a bit more than 15 bucks. Now I have to start working on filling it with firewood for next winter!
By the way, the 15 bucks went for 3 12' two-by-fours. They had the Canadian maple leaf on them. That brought back some memories. In my previous life (before moving here to take on the inn, I worked for a trading company back in Seattle), I must have moved over a thousand TEU's (ocean-going containers) of lumber from North America to Japan. And here I am now as the end user of some of that same lumber. Who woulda thunk it.
(Warning to anyone out there who is trying to use this blog to practice English, that last little phrase ain't standard Queen's English.)

アメリカのオバマさんの大統領になる式が行われました。２５０万人が見たと。日本での注目も凄い。世界中の期待感がこの１人に物凄く重いです。たった一人はどれだけ「Change」が出来ますでしょうか？まあ、前の大統領のたった一人でアメリカの立場をそれだけダウンしたから、オバマ氏にその立場を直すのに望んでいます。

Obama was sworn in as the new president of the US, in front of 2.5 million people. It's all the press here in Japan is talking about. The global expectations on this one man are intense. Can one man really effect this much "change"? Well, his predecessor single-handedly changed America's position in the world for the worse. Here's hoping Obama can change it now for the better. And, as Obama said in his speech, he's not just one man, he leads all of us Americans.

実は先月にやった事を紹介したいです。今日は今日で色々な面白い事が予定していましたのでそれについて書くつもりでしたが、子供から風邪が移られて、ダウンしてしまいました。戸倉上山田温泉の若旦那達がマイ箸運動でお客様の持ち帰り用でお箸を作っていまして、TVの取材もありました。しかし、この風邪で残念ながら私が参加できませんでした。
従って、前から書こうと思ったことを今回に書かせていただきます。
我が家族のクリスマスのトラディションは皆で軽井沢に行って、買い物や遊びをすることです。前年は軽井沢のトリックアートのギャラリーに行き、この間のクリスマスは信州ハム軽井沢工房でソーセージ体験をしました。出来上がったソーセージは親戚や近所の皆にクリスマスプレゼントをしました。
ソーセージはよく食べるけど、自分の手で実際作ってみれば良い経験になります。家族の皆でやるのはまた盛り上がります。
子供のころ、親が自分と弟達を連れて、知り合いの家でソーセージ作りを偶に行きました。スパイスを混ぜたり、豚の腸に積んで、燻製したりする作業は良い思い出が残っています。特に、燻製したところはよく火事になって大騒ぎでした。
信州ハムの体験は燻製なしですが、うちの子供達にきっと良い思いでになったのではないかと思います。工房は軽井沢駅の近くなので亀清に来る途中で家族の人時としてお勧めです。
For today's blog entry, I had planned on writing about an event I was scheduled to participate in with the other innkeepers. Our Junior Innkeepers group made chopsticks to give to guests for them to keep and use instead of disposable chopsticks. There even was a TV crew on hand to film it. However, I came down with a cold, so had to skip it.
Instead, I have something I've been meaning to write about but never had a chance. Our family's Christmas tradition has been to make a trip to Karuizawa for shopping and fun. The year before, we went to the Trick Art Museum. This Christmas, we went to Shinshu Ham's sausage atelier and made sausage to give as gifts to our relatives and neighbors. It's great to see how sausage is made and to actually make it with your own hands. Our kids really enjoyed the experience.
I have fond memories from when I was a kid of going on a road trip with my parents and brothers to make sausage at the house of a family friend. Kneeding the spices into the ice cold meat, turning the crank to slowly stuff the filling into the pig intestines, tying the links, and putting the links into the smoker. Every once in a while, the smoker would catch fire and we had to get the hose to put out the flames.
At Shinshu Ham, they don't smoke the sausages. But our kids certainly had a memorable experience. The atelier is close to Karuizawa Station, so it makes a fun stop for families on the way to or from Kamesei.

大勝館の大衆演劇の１月のチラシです。一般人用の歌舞伎。綺麗な踊り、綺麗な着物。但し、足がけばけばしている。最近、我が宿の外国人客さんに人気です。是非、お勧めです。毎日２ショーです。午後１時と午後７時から。亀清にて割引券もございます。（大勝館は亀清旅館から歩いて５分です。電話番号は026-276-1233）
Here is the January flyer for Taisho-Kan's geisha drag theater. It's Kabuki for the masses, with beautiful dancing, beautiful kimonos, it's just the hair legs that make me shiver. Two shows daily, at 1pm and 7pm. Most of the shows have 3 acts, including a yakuza (gangster) and geisha play. Discount tickets are available here at Kamesei. The theater is about 5 minutes away on foot. Several of our guests from overseas have gone and seen it lately and loved it!





北信流 "Hokushin-Ryu"

私の地元のシアトル市は１８６９年に生まれました。割りと若い町です。百何十年前に。いつも感心していますが、この善光寺平はの周辺（千曲市も込めて）の人間の歴史は一千何百年、もしくは何千年もある。
夕べ、長野市古間区のこのメンバーの新年会で妻と私に「北信流」の式をやってくれました。私は知識不足ですが、この北信流のルーツはかなり古いです。私は大好きです。北信の歴史の奥深さを感じさせます。式が終わったら、「どう思いましたか」と聞かれました。「この為に日本に来た」と答えました。
北信流　おめでたい時やお祝いの時に昔から北信で行われています。北信というのは善光寺の鐘の音が届く範囲だと聞いています。内容はお酒をお互いにあげるところと、一番感動的のは独特な歌があります。この写真じゃ歌の良さが全然伝わらない。皆さんはこの戸倉上山田温泉や北信のどっかの宴会に呼ばれたら、運が良ければ、北信流に参加できるかもしれない。この伝説、歌を歌える人、が段々と少なくなってきた。私もいつかこの歌を覚えたいと思っています。
My hometown of Seattle was incorporated in 1869. It's history is still very short. In contrast, I am constantly amazed at how long human history is here in the Zenkoji Plain (of which Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is on the southern tip). Seattle's history is measured in tens, maybe hundreds of years. This area's is measured in hundreds, maybe thousands of years.
Last night we had some guests from the Furuma district in Nagano City. They performed a ritual for my wife and I at the end of their New Year banquet. It's called "Hokushin-Ryu", or a tradition Northern Nagano. The ritual consists of trading drinks of sake, accompanied by a song. The song just feels primordial and ancient. It really gives you a sense of the deep historical roots of the area. It's something that can't be conveyed in text or pictures -- it needs to be experienced in person. So if you are ever invited to a banquet in our onsen town of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen or some other place in Northern Nagano (as defined by the area reached by the sound of the bells at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City), you may get to see the Hokushin-Ryu performed. That is, if you are lucky. The tradition, and the people that can sing the song, are slowly disappearing....

長野の冬に負けないように：湯たんぽ　Hot Water Bottles to fight the cold

最近、お客様の要望がありましたので湯たんぽの貸し出しを始めました。長野の冬は寒いので、この湯たんぽに上山田温泉の暖かくて良いお湯を入れて、布団の中に置けば大分助かります。日本の昔からの「エコ」です。
ご希望の方は申し付けてください。
Some guests have recently inquired about "Yu-tampo" hot water bottles. We have started offering them for our guests to use at night. Nagano gets chilly in the winter, so to fight the cold, you fill one of these bottles up with our nice hot onsen water and place it inside your futon. It helps keep you warm at night. Feel free to ask us to use one when you stay.
