Okagura members at last year's Chishikiji Festival

上山田神楽保存会は４月に２つなイベントが予定しております。

４月１２日(日）　花見＠荒砥城
戸倉上山田温泉の上の山城、荒砥城、からの眺めが綺麗ですが、お城の周りの桜の木が咲くと、最高な景色になります。お神楽のメンバーがその公園で集まる予定なので獅子ももって行きますからお客様から希望さえあれば踊りはする予定です。花より団子より。。。上山田の獅子のお祓いは如何でしょうか？
場所：戸倉上山田温泉の上の荒砥城
お時間：午前１０時半から１２時まで

４月１７日(金)　知識寺の花祭り
戸倉上山田温泉から１ｋｍぐらいに十一面観音で有名な知識寺は毎年この日に国の重要な文化財になっている十一面観音が見せられます。お神楽もお祝いで舞います。伝統的なローカルの祭りに是非、ご一緒に行きましょう。去年はイギリスからの旅行者は２人を連れて行きました。地元の方が観光じゃなくて地元の為にやる祭りで物凄く感動してくれました。
場所：知識寺
時間：お神楽の踊りが１１時ごろ

12-April (Sun) Cherry Blossom Viewing at Arato-jo Castle
The view of the Chikuma River valley and the surrounding mountains from our mountain fortress, Arato-jo, is always beautiful. But when the park's cherry trees are in bloom, the view is even prettier. This year, our Okagura Lion Dance troupe will hold a little cherry blossom viewing party at the castle. We'll be in full regalia, so if any visitors would like, we're planning on doing the lion dance.
Place: Arato-jo Castle above Togura Kamiyamada Onsen
Time: approx. 10:30am~12noon

17-April (Fri) Chishiki-ji Temple's Festival
Approx. 1km from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Chishiki-ji Temple, a stately local temple that houses an 11-Faced Buddhist image. Every year on this day the image is brought out for display, and the locals gather for a ceremony to bless the local area. Our Okagura group helps celebrate with our lion dance.
Last year, I took a couple of Brits that were staying with us, and they utterly enjoyed a festival not done for tourists, but simply done by and for the locals. So if that sounds like something you'd be interested in seeing, come go with me!
Place: Chishiki-ji Temple
Time: all day long, but our lion dance will take place around 11am.





やっと冬が来ました。Winter is finally here!

朝に起きたら、外が真っ白だと驚きました。3月末でやっと雪景色だ!今年の冬は雪が本当に少なかったです。この雪は杏と桜の木の花にどういう影響でしょうか?
冬限定でお鍋プランをやっています。3月末で切れる予定ですが、今年の冬は長く続きそうです。お鍋プランを延長しなきゃ！
When we woke up this morning, we were surprised to see the ground covered in snow. Here it is the end of March, and winter is finally showing up. I hope it doesn't have a negative effect on the apricot and cherry blossoms.

あんずの里：まだつぼみ状態

先週にここで森｢杏の里｣の花が速く咲くと書いてしまいましたが、あれから温度がまた低くなったし、雪も降りました。従って、今週末じゃなくて、あんずまつり予定通り４月２日ごろから花見は出来るでしょう。今日、通ってみたら、谷の上の方の木はまだ写真のようにつぼみのままでした。
長野では、この時期に｢三寒四温」と表現があります。大体ゴールデンウィークまで寒い三日間の後、温かい４日間という折り返しが続くそうです。余計に花咲くタイミングの予想が難しいわけです。
またちょこちょこ森に行きますので最新情報をここでまた発表したいと思っております。
Last week, I announced that the apricot trees in Mori's Anzu-no-Sato (Apricot Village) were going to bloom early. Since then, temperatures dropped and we even had snow. I took this picture of the apricot trees this afternoon -- the ones in the upper end of the valley haven't started blooming yet. So it looks like the flowers will follow the original schedule for the Anzu Festival, of 02-April through 17-April.
There is a saying here in Nagano from about this time through the beginning of May of "San-Kan, Shi-On", which means 3 days of cold weather followed by 4 days of warm. This must be confusing to the poor apricot trees.
I will continue to check in on Mori in the coming days and will provide more update info here on this blog, so stay tuned!





県のインバウンド研究会のフィナーレ Nagano Prefecture's Inbound Research Group's Finale

長野県のインバウンド研究会の最後の集まりは今日、行われました。県の観光化はこれからのインバウンド作戦のガイドラインを作るのに私達のアドバイスを取れ入れて、広範囲なリポートが出来ました。私以外に、旅館組合の方、松本大学の教授先生、JTBの方、アルピコ、長野市CVB,商工会関係の中国の方と白馬の商工会の方がいました。座長はJNTOのベテランの方でした。来年度にこのガイドラインの実現はどれだけ出来るか、楽しみですね。
この会議のせいで、私は旅館に戻るのは遅れました。うちの妻がお客さんに食事を出していた時、「若旦那は?」と聞かれたようです。ちょうどその時に、TVの夕方のニュースでこの研究会の事が放送されて、「そっちに行っている」と妻が説明できました。ナイスタイミングだったようです。

Nagano Prefecture's Inbound Research Group's final meeting took place today. The prefecture's Tourism Department put together a comprehensive strategy for focusing on Inbound issues for the near future. We'll see how successful they are in implementing the guidelines next fiscal year. Besides me, the other members of the group included a professor from Matsumoto U., a Chinese lady from the Business Association, and people from JTB, the ryokan association, Nagano City's CVB, Hakuba, Alpico Bus, and a JNTO veteran.
Due to this meeting, I was late in getting back to the inn. Mari was serving some guests their dinner, and they asked where I was. Just by coincidence, the evening's news on TV showed our meeting. So she told them, "That's where he is." Nice timing!

上山田庁舎：４割変化 Kamiyamada's City Office: 40% Change

来月のイースターのイベントの打ち合わせの為に千曲市の役場に行きました。そうすると、雰囲気はがいつもと違いました。役場で働いている知り合いに聞いたら、皆の来年度(＝来週）の仕事場変更が発表されたばかりだったそうです。６割は残職。。。ということは４割も変職？！？町興しで盛り上がっている旅館組合の担当、観光課係長、も変わるそうです。せっかく今の係長がこれだけ前向きになってくれたのに！
こういうシステム、公務員の皆を２，３年毎に変職、のメリット・デメリット効果は図れる事があるでしょうか？私が思いますが、メリット（役員は色んな部門を幅広く経験できる事と、１つな部門に馴染み過ぎて、怪しい関係を防ぐ事）がデメリット(今回は良い例：観光の経験のまったくない人が我々の観光課係りが仕事に慣れるまで時間がかかっちゃう事)に負けるような気がします。
アメリカで同じ公務員が同じ仕事を何十年間続いてやっていル人が多くて、そういう経験深いベテランと怪しい事は絶対無理だった。
役場の知り合いに冗談で｢じゃ、新しい係長をトレーニングしなくっちゃ｣と言ったら、｢そう。トレーニングしといて下さい｣と言われました。やっぱり、皆はそう思うんだ。
This morning I had to stop at City Hall to file some paperwork for next month's Easter Egg Festival. The mood at City Hall seemed a little odd. I spotted an acquaintance that works there, and he told me the reason: everyone's jobs for the next fiscal year (= next week) had just been announced. 60% of the staff would be keeping their same jobs -- that means 40% of the people would be working in new positions. 40%?!?! That's a lot of people having to re-train for new positions.
Our contact at the Tourism Department is apparently scheduled to be changed, too. This is really unfortunate, as the current official has been proactive in helping our ryokan association's civic improvement efforts.
I wonder if this system of mandatory job switching every 2~3 years has ever gone through a cost/benefit analysis. I understand the benefits (public workers get a broader field of experience, and they don't get too familiar with any one spot which could lead to disreputable actions). However, the costs, like our new Tourism official having to learn a new position from scratch, seem to outweigh any benefits. Back in the States, I'm used to having government officials be in their positions for decades -- they were so knowledgeable and experienced, you couldn't get away with anything with them.
I joked with my acquaintance that now us ryokan people were going to have to "train" the new guy, and he replied, "Yes, train him well!" So even people within the system know its weaknesses.

With Nagano's Best, outside Toigo

長野国際親善クラブの一番Advancedの英会話クラスは一年間、勉強を頑張ったのでお疲れ会に私を呼んでくれました。この青い目の若旦那はどういう訳で長野に来たかとか。皆さんは勉強熱心で色々と厳しくていい質問もしてきました。まあ、私も厳しい評価を返しました。特に、私は海外の方に長野を紹介しょうとしている中、1つの大きい壁は英語の情報が少ない事。そして、英会話の生徒はこれだけ英語が出来、これだけ長野の事が詳しいのであれば、その勉強の結果を形として残してくださいと；長野の英語情報をインタネットに載せてくださいと。（せっかく誘って頂いて、逆に私の方からそういう厳しい要望を出しちゃって、失礼しました!）
The Nagano Int'l Friendship Club's most advanced English Conversation class invited me to speak at their end of the school year gathering. I talked about how I came to Nagano to run an inn. I was also a rude guest and took advantage of the situation by suggesting the students use their English abilities plus their local knowledge of Nagano, to put info in English about Nagano on the web. I think it would be great for them to share Nagano with the world, while practicing their English. I hope I didn't offend them!

Can you spot Kamesei?

杏の里と戸倉の間の山を越える道からこんなに綺麗な景色がある。車じゃないとこの道はきついでしょうけど、絶品の眺めです。
今週はまた雪が降る予想ですが、基本的に戸倉上山田温泉のホワイトシーズンが終わりました。あと1，2週間でところでどころにピンクなシーズン（杏及び桜のお陰）が始まります。その以降はグリーンシーズンとなる。今はその中田半端のブラウンシーズンです。木の葉っぱはまだ入らない。その分で、山からの眺めが綺麗です。

Here is the view of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen from the mountain pass above Togura Station. It's best reached by car, but the view is spectacular.
The weather report calls for more snow this week, but the winter "White Season" is basically over. In a couple weeks, we'll have pink season (apricot and cherry blossoms) followed by the green season. Until then, we're in the transitional brown season. One nice thing about no leasves on the trees is you can see the view better.





サーカス・テント登場！ The Circus Tent is Here!

アメリカでサーカスは大体いつもテントでやります。日本もそうみたいです。キグレ新サーカス長野版は今週末から始まっています。今日、会場を通ってみました。こんなでかいテントが張ってありました。うちの子供たちは早速入ってみました。ショーがとても楽しかったようです。1ポイント・アドバイス：自由席はテントのポールや線のせいで見づらいなので指定席は高くつくけどその分の価値がある。

There's something about the circus and tents. Back in the States, people usually do a circus in a huge tent. Japan seems to follow that tradition here. The Kigure New Circus opened their Nagano run this weekend, to huge crowds. One piece of advice, though, the open seating sections have blocked views - it's worth the extra money to upgrade to the reserved seats.

Kigure New Circus長野は戸倉上山田温泉から車で10分です。又はしなの鉄道の新しい千曲駅からシャットルバスが動いています。
The circus is about 10 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or there are shuttles running from the new Shinano Railway "Chikuma Station".

会社卒業の祝い 　Career Graduation Celebration

今は卒業の時期ですね。小学校や、大学など、毎日の様にどこかの学校の卒業式が行われているようです。我がKenちゃんの卒園式だって今日でした。
そして、学校だけじゃないです。夕べに泊まった奈倉さんは６５歳で定年退職という事で、お仕事を卒業しました。羨ましいですね！毎日は好きな事ができる。本人も、バード‐ウオッチングや絵描き、温泉(亀清？！）など、沢山の趣味があるそうです。まあ、おめでとうございます！

In Japan, March is graduation season. It seems like every day, some local school or university is having a graduation ceremony. Even our son Kenny's preschool graduation party was this morning.

But it's not just graduation from schools. Like our guest from last night, Nagura-san, there are some people retiring from their jobs as well. Nagura-san turned 65, and is graduating from work. He says from now on his biggest difficulty will be to wake up in the morning and decide which of his many hobbies (bird watching, painting, onsens -- Kamesei, of course!) he will do that day. Well, we congratulate him and all other work graduates!

客間｢千歳｣の坪庭にChristmas Rose

亀清の渡り廊下の坪庭にクリスマスロースがこんなに可愛いく咲いてきました。紫も白もあって、上品な綺麗さ。

そして、私の森｢杏の里｣のコネから新着情報：杏の枝のつぼみがほんの少し開き始まったそうです。地元のおばあさん情報では、３月２８日・２９日の週末から花見が出来るそうです。杏祭り実態はその次の週末から始まる予定なので偉い込みます。空いている内に、早目に行った方が勝ちかもしれません。(ちなみに、亀清はまだ空き部屋があるので宿泊は宜しくお願いします。）

In the "tsubo" pocket gardens off our "watari-roka" passageway, the Christmas Rose plants are starting to fully bloom. They have a subtle, unpretentious charm to their flower -- it perfectly matches the relaxing mood of our inn.

In other flower news, the Apricot Village in Mori on the other side of town is gearing up for the Apricot Festival, scheduled to take place from 04-April to 17-April. However, I just heard from my Mori "connection" that the buds on the branches are already starting to open. That's right -- Mori's apricot blossoms will be in peak form for viewing about a week ahead of their official festival. March 28th, 29th weekend should be perfect, and the crowds won't start until the weekend after! (For anyone wishing to stay the night, we still have rooms available the weekend of the 28th!)
