祭りの準備：　獅子練習　Getting Ready for the Big Festival: Shi-shi Practice

７月１８，１９日の上山田温泉夏祭りに向かって、準備が段々と進んでいます。夕べは獅子の練習でした。その「どこい！どこい！どこい！」が耳にずっと残っています。物凄く迫力のアル祭りなので機会があれば、是非見に来てください。私は今年、また獅子に入りますので宜しくお願いします。
（ちなみに、写真に写っているのは私の先輩、亀屋本店の高野さん。今年の若連のトップです。ご苦労様です！）

Preparations for this year's Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival (scheduled for July 18th and 19th) are starting to build into a fevered peak. Last night was the main practice for the Shi-shi lion. The "Dokoi! Dokoi! Dokoi!" chant is stuck in my head now. I can't wait for the actual day. It's an energy-filled event -- if you get the chance, definitely come and see it!

(By the way, the guy in the picture is my "senpai", Takano-san from Kameya Honten. He is this year's Waka-Ren top. Keep up the good work!)

県庁でインバウンドの打ち合わせ Taking Inbound Issues to the Capital

長野インバウンドサミットの会長（私）と事務局長（Kenさん）が長野県の観光部に打ち合わせしてきました。長野市にある県庁の中でした。行政と民間と協力で、今年のインバウンドサミットはどうするかちょっとずつ見えて来ました。取り敢えず、今月の１５日に諏訪で次のインバウンドサミットのローカルミーティングが行います。酒屋さん真澄の蔵見学及び御柱ミニ体験を予定しています。参加したい方はどうぞ、ご連絡を下さい。

The Nagano Inbound Summit chairperson (me) and Office Director (Ken-san) went to the Prefecture Capital in Nagano City today to meet with the Prefecture's Tourism Department. We discussed possibilities for coordinating this year's Summit -- a partnership between the government and private sectors. Plans for the summit are starting to take shape.
For now, the next "Local Meeting" will be held this month on the 15th in Suwa. We are planning on including a tour of Masumi's sake warehouses as well as a mini-participation event for Onbashira (Suwa's once-every-seven years huge bash, to be officially held next spring.) If interested in participating, feel free to contact me.

県庁の周辺に色々な面白い建物がある。これは「キャンサー・ハウス」 Lots of interesting places around the capital. This is a "cancer house".

もう１つな面白い建物：西洋のレンガに日本の瓦、尚且つバスケットの１ポイント Another interesting building: classic Western bricks with traditional Japanese roof tiles, plus a basketball hoop!

戸倉駅に野菜キオスク　Farmers Market Opened in Togura Station

グッド・ニュース！戸倉駅に直売りの野菜・果実キオスクが出来ました。地元の農産物を安く手に入れる。他の道の駅で桜ん坊は小さいカップで５００円、戸倉駅の市場で割りといい大きさのパックで３５０円ぐらいでした。そして、トマトは色んな種類、アスパラは緑も紫もあり、美味しそうな野菜はいっぱいありました。戸倉上山田温泉からの帰りの電車にローカルのチェリーはどう？

Good News! A mini Farmers Market has opened up in Togura Station. Good prices on locally grown produce. The other day, I stopped by a "Michi-no-Eki" at another town, and they had a pitifully small cup of cherries for 500 yen. The kiosk at Togura Station had a decent sized pack of cherries for about 350 yen. There were several varieties of tomatoes, purple as well as green asparagus, and a whole lot more yummy-looking fresh veggies. So on your train ride back home after your stay at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, you can munch on local cherries!

新しい客室「紬」の工事　Working on Kamesei's Newest Guestroom: Tsumugi

先日に書いた様に、今年の亀清の目標は３つの客室の簡単の改造。その第一歩は「松風」を「紬」に作り直します。知り合いからお蚕さんを育つ為の棚は沢山を頂きました。部屋の窓からはコンクリートの壁ぐらいしか見えないのでその棚を壁に貼り、見た目や感覚をもうちょっとやわらかくする。これからは他にもお蚕や紬のテーマで庭やインテリアを改造していきます。

この間、長野県立歴史館に行ったら、この辺のシルク関係の歴史を学びました。シルクの輸出によって信州は割りと早い内に国際的だった。そのルーツも取り入れて、この「紬」という部屋でお客さんが長野の伝統と歴史と触れ合えれるように作っていきたい。

As previously mentioned, my goal this year here at Kamesei is to do a minor remodel on 3 guest rooms. First up is changing "Matsukaze" to "Tsumugi". To be honest, the name matsukaze (literally, "pine tree, wind") has no meaning to me. Tsumugi, on the other hand, refers to weaving. Our local specialty of silk weaving is "Ueda Tsumugi". Many of the old farmhouses around here have second floors for raising silk worms. In fact, a buddy of mine bought such a house, and gave me several of the bamboo lattice-like sheets used for raising the "okaiko" silk worms.

For part of the room remodel, I am using those sheets to cover up the concrete wall seen from the guestroom. I have several other silk-related ideas for the room, so that guests will be able to get a sense for Nagano's silk producing culture, here in our new "Tsumugi" room.

Andy君は傘がいるかいらないかぐらいだった雨が軽い。なんとなく、アジサイはこの天気に似合いますね。

A "lansel" backpack, an umbrella, and hydrangeas -- it must be a Walk to School in the Tsuyu rain.

Actually, the rain was so light, Andy-kun here almost didn't need his umbrella. Don't the hydrangea flowers somehow match the "tsuyu" rainy season?

稲荷山ウォーキング　Inariyama Walking

蔵し館でスタートStarting at Kurashikan

千曲市の稲荷山地区はイメージの問題がある。千曲市の観光課は森の杏、姨捨の棚田と戸倉上山田の温泉に並べて「蔵の町」として売ろうとしている。観光客がかなり期待して、実際に行ってみればがっかりして、文句を言う事が多い。何故なら、ちゃんと整備されている蔵はちょっとしかないから。
蔵の土壁が崩れてきて、又はアルミサイディングが貼ってあって、又は蔵が撤去されて代わりに輸入住宅が建てられたとか。
その歴史的の街並みを守ろうとする稲荷山町並み委員会は今日、「街中ウォッチング」と言うイベントを行った。稲荷山じゅく会長の泉さんが私達３０人を案内して、町の歴史、残っている蔵の守るべきな部分を説明してくれました。壊れてきている・壊されている中で、味のあるのは所々にあります。特に浦の小道を通れば、見れる。
地元の方は「こういう動きは２０年前からやるべきだった」と。
Chikuma City's Inariyama district has an image problem. The city's Tourism Department is trying to sell Inariyama as a "kura" (historical warehouse) neighborhood on par with Mori's apricots, Obasute's rice fields, and Togura-Kamiyamada's onsen. However, tourists who go see Inariyama are inevitably disappointed because there are so few kura left in good shape. A lot of the earthen walls are disentegrating, or getting covered up by aluminum siding, or getting torn down entirely and replaced by Western-style housing.
Today, the Inariyama Town Preservation Group held an event called "Inariyama Watching". Izumi-san from Inariyama Juku Kai led about 30 of us on a walking tour, pointing out the neighborhood's history and the remaining classical kura spots. Amongst the dilapedation are some very impressive examples of kura architecture. Especially on some of the narrow side streets.
One of the older residents remarked he wished this type of effort had started 20 years ago.

４つの客室に地上デジタル放送対応テレビを新しく入れました。亀清旅館はやっと２１世紀に入ったって感じです。TVはせっかく新しくなったから良い台を探しました。そしたら、館内でこの昔のタンスを見つけました。TVは一歩進んで、タンスは一歩下げたの様。私は個人的にこの雰囲気が好きですが、「それはあなたが外人だから。日本人はその古いタンスがぼろぼろにしか見えない」と言われてしまいました。どうですかな？味があるのではないですか？

We upgraded 4 of our guest rooms with new digital-enabled flat screen TV's. It feels like Kamesei has at last entered the 21st Century. Since we got the new TV's, I wanted to get a nice stand for them. I looked around the inn, and found these old "tansu" chests. It's like we took a step forward with the new TV's, and a step back with the tansu. I think the combination is cool, but was told "That's because you're a foreigner. We Japanese think that kind of old tansu is just junk." Hmm. I think it has lots of character.

杏狩りタイム！　It's apricot picking time!

千曲市の森地区は「杏の里」として知られていて、毎年は４月に杏の花で盛り上がります。今になると、実がもうなっていて、美味しく頂いています。たった２ヵ月半で実ができる・・・早い！
（ちなみに、私は甘酸っぱい古い種類の方が好きです。）

杏の花か果実、どちらが嬉しいですか？

Chikuma City's Mori district is famous for its "Anzu no Sato" apricot blossoms in early April. Now, those same trees are full of delicious, juicy fruit. It's amazing to think that the trees can go from blossoms to ripe fruit in just 2-1/2 months!
If you come to Mori to pick apricots, I suggest the classic heritage varieties -- I like their tart flavor.

So, which do you like better, apricot blossoms or apricot fruit?

花札のおばさんたち Little Old Ladies Playing "Hanafuda"

お客様のお布団を引きに行ったら、このおばさんたち３人は花札で盛り上がっていました。なんとなく、このゲームやら、おばさんたちの年やら、以前の時代を感じました。

When I went into one of the guestrooms tonight to flip the futons, the three little old ladies were caught up in a game of "hanafuda". It's a traditional game that doesn't get played much these days. Perhaps more when these ladies were little girls. It seemed like such a precious scene, I just had to take their picture.

インバウンド成功事例：飛騨高山 An Inbound Success Story: Hida Takayama

保存された街並み　Preserved Townscape

信州の周りに成功している観光地は沢山あります。元々日本人にも外国人にも人気があって、しかし行政も市民も努力して努力して、伝統を守りながら街並みを昔のままに改造したりして、今でも似国内も海外の観光客も増えている実例。去年の１１月にその１つ、金沢市に行ってくました。今日は、もう１つ、飛騨高山に行ってきました。
「中部広域観光推進大会」というのは高山で行われました。そこで富山県や岐阜県などの色々な方と出会えて、良かったです。一番印象に残ったのは高山市商工観光部の観光課長、丸山さんのプレゼンテーションでした。市が国などの支援金を上手く使って、町並みの保存や、外国人の為の多言語表記、ユニバーサルデザインなど、様々の行動をした結果、観光客の人数がちゃんと伸びてきたと。努力の実例とその結果の数字を分かりやすく説明してくれました。感動しました。
（逆に、この千曲市は街並みの保存支援のところじゃなくて、今年は「花いっぱい運動」の予算もカット。町の花さえ大事にせいへんければ、街並みはどうにもならない！）
会議の前と後に町をぶらぶらしました。その写真と感想は下記です。
In the near vicinity of Nagano Prefecture are a few tourism success stories -- towns that had always been popular with both Japanese and foreign tourists but that have put a lot of effort into retaining their traditional townscapes. Through that effort, the numbers of both domestic and foreign visitors have continued to grow. I visited one such place, Kanazawa City, last fall, and today visited another, Hida Takayama in neighboring Gifu Prefecture.

My trip to Takayama was for the Chubu (Central) Wide Area Promotion Project for Nagano, Gifu, Toyama and Ishikawa Prefectures. In addition to meeting many people from those areas, the most memorable part was the talk by Maruyama-san of Takayama City's Tourism Division. His presentation highlighted the efforts of the city to use government money to maintain and extend the preservation districts, overseas promotion, multilingual signage, barrier free and many other projects resulting in an increase of visitor numbers.
(By comparison, here in Chikuma City, the flower budget was cut this year. If the town can't even do something as basic as beautifying the town with flowers, there's no hope for city help in preserving traditional buildings!)
