A couple of days ago, I posted a kind comment from a Japanese guest. Today it's English time. Guest I.S.-san from Canada wrote us this comment:

Hi Tyler.
M. and I had hoped to see you before checking out Wednesday morning. We wanted to personally thank you for the wonderful hospitality provided to us at Kamesei this week. We had an unforgettable three days at your inn, and I can honestly say that Kamesei is among the nicest and most "authentic" ryokans I have seen in Japan. We loved our tatami room, the gardens, onsen, dinner, and most of all the quiet, peaceful ambience of Kamesei. We would love to visit again in the future (to see the snow monkeys!!). Thanks again Tyler. All the best to you. I.S.

Thank you for your e-mail, and for coming and staying with us at Kamesei Ryokan. I apologize for having to leave early for a meeting and not being able to say good-bye.

I am grateful that you and M.-san enjoyed your stay at our inn. And I appreciate your kind words.

Sometimes I think my fellow ryokan-owners here are forgetting the real purpose of the traditional Japanese ryokan (hence all the Western hotel-style concrete/steel boxes around). As an outsider, I am in a unique position to honor the ryokan's "essence" in my work here at Kamesei. When I read your comments, it made me realize that some Japanese travelers have forgotten the true purpose of staying at ryokan, and could learn from your words.

You and M.-san are most welcome to come and stay with us again. Maybe we could all go to see the snow monkeys together.

客室「松風」を「紬」に改造する次のステップ：床の間にこのオブジェが出来ました。親戚の前島おじさんから頂いた糸巻きの機会です。彼の民家の屋根裏から出てきたようです。昔はお蚕さんを育っていたらしいのでそのころに使っていた機会です。何十年間に使われなかったのでちょっと黒くなっていましたから私と女将社長が半日をかけて、磨きました。再来週で私が上田紬の体験をする予定なのでその作品はうまく出来たらこの部屋で飾りたいと考えています。
この部屋は段々と「紬」というコンセプトの雰囲気になってきています。

As part of the remake of guestroom "Matsukaze" to "Tsumugi", I placed this 'objet' in the room's tokonoma alcove. Our Uncle, Maejima-san, gave us this thread reel to display. His family apparently used to raise silkworms, and he had this antique reel in his attic. Our 'okami-san' and I spent a half a day cleaning it and polishing it up. It goes well with the tsumugi silk weaving concept for the room.

先週にお泊りになった千葉県のM.S.様からお礼のメールを頂きました。下記のようにご親切に書いて頂きました。

7/10に宿泊させていただいたM.S.です。
現役時代から出張が多く、ベッド嫌いの小生は和風旅館には何百回と宿泊してきましたが、
高くて良い旅館、それは当たり前で、リーズナブルな価格+αのある旅館には、是非また行ってみたくなります。
今回、泊めていただいた亀清旅館さんは、その中でも最もアットホームという+αを感じさせる旅館でした。
風呂上り等でロビーに座っていると、ご主人やおばあちゃん等がさりげなく声をかけて下さる、
布団を敷きに来たご主人が、日本人よりも流暢に、人懐っこく語りかけてくる、
食事を運んできた奥様が自然体で語りかけてこられる、
プロのように綺麗ではなくても、素人が懸命に作ったことがありありと分かる露天風呂、などに接するうちに、
自然と心が和んできました。
温泉の泉質も硫黄泉なのにきつくなくとても入りやすいものでしたし、
お料理も゛とても美味しい家庭料理゛という感じで食べやすく十二分に満足しました。

失礼ですが今後の改善点として気のついたことを付記します。
・夕食は60過ぎの我々にはちょっとボリュームオーバー、もったいないという意識から今回、完食してしまい翌日胃が重くて困りました。
1品か2品少なくても十分満足ですので、事前にエコノミーコースなどとして選択できるようにして欲しいものです。
＜M.S.さんの使った予約サイトでプランの数が限られているけど、じゃらんネット等で６０歳以上専用なプランも出しております。＞

・建物内にいろいろな額などが多数掛けられており、それぞれ謂れあるものとは思いますが、無いほうが返ってすっきりするのでは。
＜言われてみれば、なるほど。亀清旅館を改善していく中ですっきる感も考えたいと思っております。＞

いずれにしても、心身ともにリラックスさせていただきありがとうございました。
お蔭様で翌日も良い気分で小布施観光し、その日の夜、帰宅しました。

近いうちにまた、泊まってみたくなる旅館でした。
ご家族で力をあわせて亀清を発展させてください。

亀清旅館の中で飾ってあるアートの中で私の一番すきなのはこれです。

いま
ここにしかいないわたし
のいのち
あなたの
いのち

旅館の意味はまさにこれ。日々のストレスから離れて、日常的な世界を忘れて、自分（又は自分とのパートナー）の存在を改めて認識する為。

宿側の仕事はそれが出来る場面を提供する事です。静かなお部屋でくつろげるように、自然な資材で落ち着けるように、温泉で体を休ませるように、ヘルシーな食事で元気になるように。これは温泉旅館の仕事です。

地に真に、温泉旅館に泊まる効果は科学的な理由もあります。いつもと違う感興の所に行く事によって気分転換になるので体も正式的にもリフレッシになる。

そこで、その文の中でもう１つなヒントがある：「ここ」。また、「ここしかない」。

亀清旅館はいったいどこでしょうか？その答えが出てくることによって、「ここ」が見えてくる。お客さんがその「ここ」を目指してくる。自分の慣れている環境から離れて、温泉宿の「ここ」を目指してくる。亀清旅館の独特な個性的な「ここ」を目指してくる。その要望に答えれなければならない。

最近にこのブログで書いていますが、私の今年の目標は３つの部屋の簡単な改造です。「松風」と「末広」と「千歳」を「紬」と「紅玉」と「杏」にする計画です。

「紬」から始まっています。回りの人達に話したら、「子供のころはうちの２階でお蚕さんを育っていた。桑を食べる時の音は忘れられない」と言う可愛い思い出もありながら、他の人が「お蚕さんのにおいが強烈だった」と言う可愛くない思いでもあり。（いずれかは「蚕」ではなくて、「お蚕さん」ですね。）とか蔵の多い周辺の町（稲荷山、力石など）に行くと、聞けばやはりシルク関係が多い。

と言うことで、「ここはどこ？」の答えの１つは「紬」だと分かりました。

そして、先週は親戚に誘われて、その親戚の土地で杏狩りしました。採った杏を亀清のフロントに置いたら、県外からのお客さんが「あっ、本物の杏は初めて」だと。ここに住めば杏は当たり前（親戚の木が採れるぐらい）だけど、そうじゃない方はジャムなどの加工した物しか知らない。尚且つ、４月の頭に全国から森「杏の里」に杏の花を見にいらっしゃる。

やはり、「ここはどこ」のもう１つな答えは「杏」。

この感覚で、亀清旅館の部屋の改造をやっていきます。お客様の目指している「ここにしかない」に答えれるように。

Of all the artwork on display in Kamesei, this is my favorite. It says, roughly translated,

Now,
The me
Only here
My spirit,
Your spirit

This is the essence of the Japanese Ryokan. Guests come to forget their daily lives, to get away from their normal stress, and come "here" to get in touch with their spirit (and/or with that of their partner).

That's the job of us innkeepers: to provide the "here" -- the room made from natural materials for the guests to relax in, the hot spring mineral baths to relax the body, the healthy meals to nourish the body.

Within the saying is another hint: "only here". Guests desire an environment different from where they spend their daily lives. It's actually scientifically proven that the human body and mind need a change of scenery to become refreshed every once in a while.

So, where exactly is Kamesei? Depending on how well we answer that question, we will be able to provide our guests with the "only here" that they are after.

As previously mentioned, this year my goal here at Kamesei is to remake 3 of our rooms, into "Tsumugi" (silk weaving), "Anzu" (apricots) and "Kogyoku" (a heirloom variety of tart apples).

This is part of my effort to answer the question "Where am I," which generally leads to the next question, "Who am I?"

戸倉上山田温泉の大勝館という大衆演劇屋さんからお中元（？）でこのホウズキを頂きました。沢山の劇団は東京の浅草から来るせいか、このホウズキは浅草からだそうです。（ホウズキは浅草の名物でしょうか？良く分かりません。）

まあ、せっかく頂いたので亀清の浦の歩道に植えました。（アシスタント：若若女将の美咲ちゃん。）そして、若女将に怒られちゃった。「何で外に植える会？酔っ払いにやられちゃうだけ。中で飾ろうよ」と。と言うことで、中で飾れるようにまたホウズキを買わんとあかん。浅草に買いに行こうかな。

The Taishokan Theater here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen stopped by to give us a chugen (seasonal gift -- kind of like a secondary Christmas present in summer). They gave us this Chinese Lantern plant. Apparently most of the theater groups that perform at Taishokan hail from Asakusa in Tokyo, and these Chinese Lanterns supposedly came from Asakusa. Is this plant a specialty of Asakusa? I have no idea.

Anyways, I planted the flower along the sidewalk behind our inn (assisted by little Misaki). But my wife complained. She had been hoping to display the flowers inside, and was worried a drunk would ruin them if left outside. So that means I have to go and buy some more Chinese Lanterns. I think I'll head out to Asakusa to do so...

大勝館のHPはこちら Click here for the website of Taishokan.　They offer 2 shows daily of a sort-of kabuki for the masses. As I mentioned elsewhere, it's beautiful dancing, beautiful kimonos, but its just the hairy legs that can get to you. Very entertaining!
