我々旅館若旦那達が臭い。布団引きや、朝早くから夜遅くまでの仕事、お風呂に入る余裕無くて、とにかく臭い。

Chikuma City's volunteer guide group, the Rakuchikai, put together this video of Obasute Mountain and the night view. We here at Kamesei often take our guests for a tour of the Obasute night view, and want to support this video project. The 15 minute DVD has footage of Obasute and its moon-reflecting terraced rice fields during the day, as well as images of the night view taken during a full moon. The disc also features a detailed explanation of the Obasute area (in Japanese language only). We have some of the DVD's on hand here at Kamesei, and are offering them for sale at 1,000 yen each. So for a momento of your tour of the Obasute night view, or for people curious to learn more about Obasute, we highly suggest this new DVD.
亀清旅館でお客様に姨捨夜景・伝説ツアーはいつも提供しております。しかし、忘年会シーズンで希望する方が少ないです。皆さんが年の忘れで精一杯でしょうか？夕べは久しぶりに行けました。新潟からのお客様と一緒でした。戸倉上山田温泉では雪がもう解けてしまいましたが、標高の高い姨捨駅の周辺はまだ白くなっていました。ちょっと寒かったけれど、空気が澄んでいて、善光寺平の夜景がうんと綺麗でした。｢新潟じゃ見れない夜景だ｣とお客様が喜んでくれました。(実は、私こそ、久しぶりで見れて、喜んでいました。）
Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we always offer to take our guests on a tour to Obasute Station to see the night view. However, during the "End of the Year" banquet season, guests tend to be more interested in the banquet instead of going out in the cold to see the lights. Last night, though, some guests from Niigata wanted to go, so I finally got to do the night veiw tour. Down here at our onsen, the snow has already melted away, but up at Obasute Station everything was still white. It was chilly, but the clear winter sky made for a beautiful night view. The guests enjoyed it, saying there's not night view like this back in Niigata. (To be honest, I enjoyed seeing it, too!)

この戸倉上山田温泉で最近に体験コースが話題になっています。マイ味噌作りやステインドグラスなど、近場で色々な体験が出来ています。その中で、私は特に気になっていたのは温泉の銀座通りのatelier BAMBOOのプリサーブフラワー体験でした。先日は息子達を連れて、妻とそのお母さんと叔母さんの為に飾りの花オブジェを作ってきました。店主の佐藤さんが親切にやり方を教えて頂いて、僕達は自分達の手で作るのを楽しめました。花の飾り作りは良い経験になりました。そしてクリスマスプレゼントで手作りのギフトをもらった方も喜んでくれました。
BAMBOOの店の中はうんとお洒落です。佐藤さんのインティリアのセンスが上手。最近はけっこう注目されてきているようです。最新のＮａＯと言う雑誌の信州の「話題の店」Ｔｏｐ１００に選ばれたし、最新のＫｕｒａという雑誌にも紹介されていています。本当に戸倉上山田温泉の宝物の1つだと思います。ここで子供達と一緒に体験が出来て、とっても良かった。
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has been putting a lot of effort into activities and experiences for people to do. For example, one of the local miso shops lets guests try making their own miso, a stained glass artist can show you how to make your own work of glass art, etc. One of these projects that I have been interested in is the Preserved Flower Decoration Making at atelier BAMBOO. The other day, I took our sons and we went to check it out. The owner, Satoh-san, kindly showed us step-by-step how to put the decoration together. We enjoyed making our little creations by our own hands, and it was a good experience to see how such decorations are made. Then my wife, mother-in-law and aunt were happy to get hand-made presents for Christmas.
BAMBOO is a really cool little shop. Satoh-san really has a sense for the interior decorating for his store. Lately BAMBOO has been attracting a lot of media attention. It is featured in the latest issues of NaO and Kura, two of Nagano's popular local magazines. I for one am really glad we were able to do the preserved flower experience there.

Hospital Beds -- part of Kamesei's Inbound rite of passage
旅館の業界や一般の新聞でも、外国人の観光客は話題になっています。この間の業界の新聞に｢2020年までに旅館の宿泊者の6人に一人が外国人になる」や地元の新聞で長野のスキー場に日本人スキー客が年々に減って、外国人(特に、オーストラリアから）が年々に増えているとか。
新聞でのイメージだけじゃ、現場で実際に外国人のお客さんを受ける現実が分からない。以前に東京の旅館の先輩と話しました。彼の宿のお客さんの9割以上が外国から。話を聞くと、最近は海外からのお客さんが夜中で病気になって、言葉や習慣の違いがあって、彼がそのお客さんを病院に連れて行って、立会いして、保険の問題があったから結局病院代を立替で払った。
今日、亀清のお客さんでオーストラリアからの方が京都へ移動する予定だったが、調子が悪かったと。隣は薬屋さんなので紹介しました。大井さんは英語(特に医学の専門語）を話せるので。そして、大井さんが出てきて、｢病院に連れて来い｣と。お勧めしてくれた近くの医者さんに連れて行って、結局4時間ぐらい通訳したり立会いしました。クリスマスイブはまさかこのようにすごされると思わなかった。しかし、お客さんはもっと可愛いそうだと思った：せっかくの海外旅行で入院なんて嫌でね。
誤解しないで頂きたいです。この件に関しては一切文句を言っていません。私の東京の先輩も夜中の病人の立会いは別にいやみに思っていなかった。但し、｢インバウンド｣に関して軽く考えている人が沢山いますので注意も必要だという事。インバウンドの世界はデザートだけじゃない。納豆もあるよと。

Articles about "Inbound" (attracting travellers from overseas) seem to be all over the papers, both industry rags and local newspapers. One industry newspaper quoted the government's goal of 1 in every 6 ryokan-stayers being "Inbound" by 2020. And the local Nagano paper has been featuring nearby ski resorts suffering from a decline of Japanese skiiers but enjoying an increase in ones from abroad, particulary Australians. However, the Inbound reality isn't always as rosy as the newspapers would have you believe.
Recently I had a talk with an innkeeper in Tokyo whose guests are more than 90% foreigners. He mentioned that he once had to take a guest from overseas who got sick to a hospital in the middle of the night. He helped with the interpretating and even ended up having to pay the bill as the hospital didn't accept credit cards and the traveller's insurance didn't work.
Today, one of our guests from Australia had some serious stomach pain. I sent him over to Oi-san, the pharmacist next door who speaks a bit of English. Oi-san came out and said I need to take the guest to a hospital to get looked at. So I got the car, and rushed the guest to the local clinic that Oi-san suggested. I ended up spending about 4 hours at the hospital helping with the interpreting and the transportation of the guest. It wasn't the way I had anticipated spending Christmas Eve. But we all felt sorry for the guest -- who wants to go to a hospital during a vacation overseas?
Now, don't get me wrong. I am not complaining one bit about the incident. Nor was the Tokyo innkeeper about his ordeal. We are just trying to make all those people who talk optimistically about Inbound that it's not always a piece of cake. One must be ready to eat natto, too.

トリックアートの美術館は那須高原など、あちらこちらにあります。その中で我が家族の一番気に入りのは軽井沢の。今日は家族のクリスマス・ホリディーで軽井沢へ買い物とイルミネーション散策で行って来ました。旧軽銀座の入り口にトリックアートの世界・旧軽井沢森ノ美術館があります。子供達は｢入りたい｣と騒いでいた。｢またかヤ？｣と思いましたが、若女将は一人で銀ぶらしたそうだったので、自分が子供三人を連れて、美術館に入りました。そして、そのアートと触れ合って、創造を使って楽しい写真撮りで盛り上がりました。ここでその一部を載せますので、どうぞ、楽しんでみてください。
Trick Art Museums seem to pop up wherever you go in Japan; places like Nasu Kogen and everywhere. Our family's favorite is the one in Karuizawa. At the entrance to the Kyu-Karu Ginza shopping street is the "World of Trick Art Kyu-Karuizawa Mori-no-Bijutsukan (Museum)". We went to Karuizawa today for our family's Christmas Holiday, for shopping and to see the lights. But our kids really wanted to go to the Trick Art Museum again. Mari wanted to go window shopping anyways, so I took the three kids and went into the museum. We ended up having a ball interacting with the trick art and taking funky pictures. It was great to see the kids using their imagination for their poses. Here are a few of our pictures for your enjoyment.

すももの会の皆様 (本当に皆様！）
来年に保育園に入る予定の子供達とのお母さん達及び兄弟のお客さんは15人が泊まってくれました。戸倉上山田温泉のカラコロ足湯を入りに出かけに行きました。手ぬぐいを届けしにいったら、15人ともが足湯には入れて、驚きました！｢一緒に入れば？｣と誘って頂きましたが、残念ながら旅館青年部の忘年会、いいえ、年末研修会の予定が入っていたので遠慮しました。来年、保育園は頑張ってね。これだけお母さんパワーがあれば、うまくいくと思います。是非、また上山田温泉のお湯にお入りになってください。
A group of little ones that will be entering pre-school next year and their moms and siblings, a total of 15 people, came to stay with us at Kamesei. They went out for a walk to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Kara-Koro footbath. When I went to take them some towels, I was surprised to see all 15 of them soaking their feet in the bath. They invited me to join them, but unfortunately I had the ryokan association's junior innkeepers year-end party, err, study session scheduled instead.
I hope all of the soon-to-be preschoolers do well at school. With this much Mom-power, I am sure they will.
寒い１２月の週末の日で雪が道に残っていて、でも子供達は休みだし、家族で何かしようか? 思い切って、信州高山温泉郷へドライブし、七味温泉に入って来ました。我々は毎日、上山田温泉に入っていますけど、偶に違う温泉に入るのもいいですね。七味温泉は上山田より硫黄が強くて、温度も１，２度高かった（４３℃ぐらいでした）。結構刺激的でした。色はその日によって違うらしい。私達が行った日に色が緑でした。そして、一番良かったのは雪景色となっていた松川渓谷を眺める大能野天風呂！信州の大自然＋温泉・・・ええ所やナ!
What's a family to do on a cold, snowy December Sunday? Why, go for a winter drive up to the mountains of course! The kids were off from school, and our inn was quiet, so we piled into the car and drove up to Takayama Village, about an hour east of Nagano City. There we went to Shichi-Mi Onsen for a soak in their bath. Of course, we take a bath in Kamiyamada's Onsen waters everyday, but it's fun to try other onsens every once in a while. Shichi-Mi's has a lot stronger sulfer content, and is a couple degrees hotter than hours (approx. 43 deg F). The color apparently varies day to day -- the day we went it was green. The best part was the outdoor bath with a spectacular view of the Matsukawa Valley covered in snow. Nagano's beautiful nature and wonderful onsens -- I knew there was a reason I moved here!

太陽様が起きる前に、ロビーやお風呂場を整理しました。露天風呂をチェックしたら、周りの庭に雪がまだ残っていて、東の空が段々と明るくなっていて、露天風呂から湯気が上がっていて、｢これは日本だ！｣と感心しました。
This morning, I woke up before the sun did and made my rounds around the lobby and baths. When I checked on the outdoor bath, its surrounding garden was still covered in snow, and the eastern sky was starting to get light, and steam was rising from the onsen bath -- quite a scene. And I thought to myself, this is what I came to Japan for...
