温泉の芸者さんが亀清の玄関に豆撒きで見えました。楽しい節分の日でした。
Our town's geisha stopped by to throw peanuts at us, part of the 'Setsubun' tradition to ward off evil spirits.

Helping to make signs
旅館青年部の行事のきかけで銀座通りという商店街の看板造りの作業が行いました。私も手伝わせていただきました。
Our town's Ginza Dori shopping district had a work party today to make signs for the entrances. I got to help out with some of the woodwork.

Picking Strawberries Indoors?
私の地元のワシントン州では苺狩りというと、夏で外で畑でやる習慣です。それで私がカルチャーショックを受けた：こちらで夏ではなくて、冬、そして外ではなくてビニールハウスの中で行いますよね。びっくりしました！

Back home, strawberry picking is done outside in a field, in the summer time. Here, it's done in the winter time in a greenhouse!

You don't have to go to the South Pacific to see a banana or papaya tree. Here in our town you can see all of these and more, at Agri-Park Tropical Fruit World. Info as per above link (Japanese only).

ギャラリー亀清
町の旅館青年部の行事として、亀清のロビーがアートギャラリーに変身しました。２月１４日まで政森暁美様と言う版画の作家の作品が展示しております。そして、政森様ご自身が１月１９日までロビーで作品製作をなされています。その作業を見るのに素晴らしい機会です!
Kamesei's lobby has been transformed into an art gallery. We will be displaying the works of wood block print artist Akemi Masamori until 14-Feb. Mrs. Masamori herself is staying with us until 19-Jan and making her works of art here in our lobby.

This group of geishas came by for their annual New Years Greeting. Our town works hard to maintain and support the geisha tradition and culture.

Lucky Horses
この２頭の藁の馬がうちのロビーに飾ってあります。知り合いが作ってくれて、地元の民芸の１つです。
These 2 straw horses are decorating our lobby for the winter. These examples of traditional folk art were made by a neighbor for us.
スノーマン Frosty!?

雪は今日、ほとんど一日降りました。お陰様で近状の友達とうちの子と大きいスノーマンを作りました。アメリカの雪だるまは足がある為に３つの玉で作ります。そして，鼻に人参を。
It snowed practically all day today, so with our kids and some neighborhood friends, we built a big snowman. We built it American-style, with three balls instead of 2 as is the style here in Japan.

宴会で芸者さんは二人が来ました。着物の姿はうんと綺麗だし、明るい会話で盛り上がりました。芸者の魅力が主には２つにある：文化とおもてなし。
A group of guests tonight invited a couple of geisha-san for entertainment. With their beautiful kimonos, and their lively conversation, the geisha-san add so much to the gathering. The charm of the geisha is two-fold: culture and this type of 'omotenashi'.

千曲川で凧揚げ
日本はお正月で凧揚げすると聞きましたので寒い中でうちの子供二人と千曲川の河川地で揚げてきました。うちの地元のアメリカでカイトは大体６月とのイメージですけど、その方が暖かくて楽しめるのではないでしょうか？
Here in Japan, people fly kites for New Years. So I took our two boys down to the banks of the Chikuma River and flew our kite in the cold winter breeze. Hmm, maybe that's why back in the States we wait 'til June -- much warmer!
