朝早く長男を連れて、小学校への通学待ち合わせの場所へ行った帰り、近所のおばさんが野沢菜を漬けていました。「親戚の皆にあげるからいっぱい作る」と言う。うちの母親のピクルズを漬ける事を思い出した。太田さん、頑張って下さいね。
On the way back from taking our son to his meeting place for the walk to school, I saw our neighbor doing her annual preparations for 'nozawana', our local pickled vegetable specialty. It reminded me of my mom pickling cucumbers. Ota-san, keep up the good work!

先日、私の地元の米国で「感謝祭」が行われました。毎年の「何に及び誰に感謝しているか」と考えるときです。私が家族を連れて、亀清旅館の跡継ぎのために上山田温泉に引越ししたのは２年間が立ちましたので感謝する事が沢山あります。
亀清旅館の面、この２年間は皆様のお陰で最高でした。「慣れたか」と良く聞かれるが、２年前を比較したら慣れてきたけれど日本のおもてなしは一生を掛けてもマスターできないなと思います。アメリカ風のおもてなしもちょっとずつ取り入れた。例えば、ロビーに薪ストーブを付けたり、母親のレシピーのクッキーをお茶菓子用で焼いたり等。そして、他の若旦那に教えられて、姨捨山夜警・伝説ツアーを始めました。TVの取材になったほど好評です。それと、一番の出来上がりはやはり手作業で作った露天風呂です。手伝ってくれた皆様に感謝しております。お陰さまで、お客様の楽しみは１つ増えました。この２年間で暗い事も多少ありました。あるお客さんに凄く差別的に言われた事もあったり、悪魔のクチコミもあった。けれども、それより、思い出になったのは「心身ともにリラックス出来た」と言うクチコミと、「来てくれて有難う」と言ったら、「いいえ、こちらこそ。タイラーさんがこの昔ながらの宿を守ってくれるのが有難い」と言うお客様もいた事です。
町の面では、夏祭りのお陰で私が仲間として受けられたし、旅館青年部で色々と勉強になったし、国際交流協会で私のアメリカの文化を地元の皆様とShareで来たし、上山田お神楽保存会でいい友達が出来た。皆様、有難う。
家族の面では、米国に残した親に悪いことしちゃったけれど（特に母親が泣いているようです）が、妻と息子達といいチームで頑張っています。そして、今年、見事に女の子も生まれました。ここの家族と友達にも全面的に支えて頂いているので本当に感謝しています。
皆様に、この２年間を有難うございました。この青い目の若旦那が感謝しております。
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to reflect on all I have been given since moving to Nagano to help continue this inn. Two years have passed since coming to Kamesei Ryokan. People ask, 'Are you used to it yet?' I think one could spend an entire lifetime and never totally get used to it, but compared with 2 years ago, I feel more comfortable. And I have everyone to thank for that.
As for the inn, I have added a few touches of American hospitality, such as the wood burning stove in the lobby and my Mom's recipe cookies for the guests. I have started guiding tours to Obasute for the night view, something that's even been featured on local tv. And my biggest accomplishment has been making the outdoor bath by hand. All of this is thanks to everyone's help.
As for the town, the summer festival has been monumental in getting me accepted as an 'insider'. The Junior Innkeepers Assoc. has been a major support network for me. The Int'l Exchange Assoc. has been instrumental in allowing me to share my American culture with everyone. And the Okagura shishi dance guys have become some of my best friends. Thank you, everyone.
As for my family, I feel bad about leaving my parents back home, but my wife and sons and I have become a great team here. Plus this year we have been blessed with the birth of our daughter. And the family and friends here have been so supportive -- I couldn't have done what I have without them.
Thanks, too, to the Big Guy upstairs for making this all happen.
新しい露天風呂の横のイチョウが紅葉で真黄色で露天風呂に落ちる葉っぱがなかなかいい風流です。露天風呂って、やはりいいな。
Right next to our new outdoor bath is a ginkgo tree. It's leaves have turned a brilliant shade of yellow. The falling leaves add a nice touch to the natural feel of the bath.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺のりんご農園は今ふじりんごのピークです。今朝はお客さんを連れて行きましたので娘さんのなみちゃんが美味しく食べていました。
In the areas around our onsen, there are many apple orchards. Some offer u-pick. This morning, I took some guests to one of the orchards, and their daughter, Nami, enjoyed tasting the fresh-picked fuji apples.

奥のお客室から三味線の音が流れてきました。行ってみると、戸倉上山田温泉の遺産、春駒さん、がお客さんに芸子さんのおもてなしを出していました。私がちょっとお邪魔して、お酒をちょっと頂いて、お客さんと一緒に三味線をお聞きしました。とってもいい雰囲気でした。「この為に日本に引越しした」と思いました。
From one of the more secluded rooms came the soft sound of a shamisen. I went to go take a peek, and found one of our onsen's cultural heritages, Harugoma-san, playing the shamisen for a guest. I got to sit for a bit, sipping sake, and listening to the beautiful melody, taking in the mood, and I thought to myself, This is why I came to Japan.

亀清の中庭 Our 'naka-niwa'
亀清旅館の中庭も、周辺の山も、紅葉になってとっても綺麗です。春の桜と杏の花見とにって入るように、特別な時期ですね。
Our 'naka-niwa' garden as well as the surrounding hills are ablaze with the colors of Fall. This is one of those magical times of the year, like cherry and apricot blossom time in the Spring.

今日からのイルミネーション
戸倉温泉と上山田温泉を結ぶ銀座通りが町興しの努力で最近話題になっています。（NHKの取材も！）
今日は冬にイルミネーションの取り付け。我々旅館若旦那達も手伝った。町興しって、最初からホームランを打つのではなくて、こういう日常的の努力ですよ。
The street that connects Togura Onsen with Kamiyamada Onsen is our Ginza. This Ginza has been attracting a lot of press lately with everyone's efforts to bring more life to the neighborhood. Today we put up lights to illuminate the cold winter.

We got the approval from the Prefecture for our outdoor bath today! Come and experience the relaxing mineral waters of Kamiyamada Hot Springs, while also bathing in the glow of the starlight.

昨日の英字新聞ジャパンタイムズに外人に対する法律についての記事がありました。(リンクがタイトルクリックを）
ホテルとかで外人のお客さんの旅券の扱いとか。以前に私がこのブログで書いたし、ちょうど一昨日に地元の警察がまた寄って、また外人の旅券の事を言ってきました。｢法律に従いたいのでその法律を見せて｣と言ったら、「厚生労働省の方ですから私達が渡していいかどうか分からない｣と断れました。いい加減しなさい！日本の心を目指して信州に来る外国旅行者にこの差別な心を見せる？この温泉の売春問題に対して努力しないとは？ちなみに、他で調べたが、厚生労働省上では｢宿泊者が日本国内に住所を有しない外国人であるときは、その国籍及び旅券番号」を記載する事。従います。
Yesterday's Japan Times had an article on something I've touched on before with this blog: strict laws against foreigners. (Click on the title for a link to the article.) Just the day before, the local police paid us another visit and again requested we take foreign guests' passports. I asked them for a copy of the law that says that, and they declined saying it was a different Ministry's policy. What, is it a secret law?!?! Most foreign tourists coming to Nagano are searching for Japan's heart -- is this prejudiced heart what we want to show them? Why don't the police do something about the prostitution problem in this town instead?
Anyways, I found the law thru other means. MHLW requires nationality and passport #'s for non-resident foreigners. Sounds simple enough -- we'll be glad to abide.
