Pt.2 New Beverage Pt.2

October 25, 2009: Uncategorized

As mentioned in Part 1, we recently made an improvement in our drink machine's selection by adding healthy, local apple juice. We also recently made an improvement in our microbrew selection. Until now, we had been offering a reasonably priced microbrew from Karuizawa. However, it only came in cans. So we finally made the step up to Shiga Kogen's microbrews that come in bottles. They are a little pricier, but by shrinking our profit margin a bit (sorry boss!), we're able to offer it for 1 coin (500 yen). Shiga Kogen Beer, which is a neighber of the snow monkeys, has a wide variety of brews. We decided to start out with their popular IPA and (my favorite) the Porter. Our guests are apparently happy with the improvement, as the new beers are selling much better than the old ones.
So when you come and stay at this Nagano ryokan, you can also enjoy a hearty Nagano microbrew, too!

Pt.1 New Beverages, Pt.1

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we have a little vending machine in front of the onsen baths. I had always wanted to have a healthy fruit juice selection in it, so I asked our beverage vendor. He gave me a quote for apple juice, both a local Nagano maker and one from overseas. Despite the freight having to cost considerably less, the local juice was more expensive.

(Isn't it always like that? Up until 4 years ago, I was shipping onions from Washington State to a processor in Kobe. Our pricing was always less than Japan's domestic Hokkaido onions. It's all about production scale!)

Anyways, being that Kamesei has great relations with a lot of local apple orchards, we of course chose the Nagano apple juice. Judging by how well it's selling, I think our guests appreciate it (and I assume Nagano's apple growers appreciate it).

Having fun picking apples

October 24, 2009: Uncategorized

Is it an apple or a tomato?

It seems like apple picking is getting more and more popular each year. There's something about being out in nature, plucking an apple off a tree and eating it right there. The freshness can't be beat! And being able to breathe in the fresh air, along with the earthy scent of the apple orchard. It all combines for a wonderful experience.
We had a group of guests today from Toyama Prefecture. They wanted to go apple-picking, so I took them to one of the farms we have a relationship with, Miyashita Orchard. They had this new sign at their entrance. It happens to be made by Yours Truly. I made sure to include some English on it, too. I kinda goofed up the apple picture, though. Some people say it looks like a tomato instead of an apple. What do you think?

The Onsen World's Key Person (?!)

October 23, 2009: Uncategorized

Kamesei was featured in the September / October issue of the Japan Spa Association's journal "Onsen". Onsen essayist Mayumi Yamazaki wrote about her experiences in hot springs oveseas, and then about the thoughts of yours truly from overseas on Japan's onsens. Mayumi-san is a Yokoso-Japan Goodwill Ambassador.

I am honored to be featured in such a prestigious industry publication. Soon after the issue came out, we received a visit by Onsen Mineral Spring Researcher Saito-san from neighboring Gunma Prefecture. He apparently wanted to experience first-hand the 100 Year bath I built that was featured in the article. Saito-san surprised me with his fluent, technical English. Apparently he studied chemistry at the Grad School level in the States.

I am flattered by this attention from my onsen colleagues and realize how much more study on my part is needed to join the community of Onsen Researchers.

New "Kogyoku (Apple)" and "Anzu (Apricot)" Gardens

October 22, 2009: Uncategorized

Chitose's "Anzu" Garden

Four years. I put up with them for four stinking, long years.

Put up with what, you say? With the sorry excuses of gardens for 2 of our guest rooms, Chitose and Suehiro. Looking back, I don't know how I did it. The "Before" pictures are soooo pitiful. Ugly tall concrete block walls and a couple of scraggly plants.

All of that has changed now. Over the past months, I demolished the concrete walls and built a wooden fence that lets in light and air. Then last week, our gardener, Okada-san, built two new gardens. The difference is like night and day.

The concept for the gardens is a Nagano Fruit Orchard. In Chitose's garden, he planted a heritage variety apricot tree, in honor of the nearby Mori "Apricot Village". In Suehiro, he planted an apple tree in honor of the many area apple orchards. And not just any apple tree, but kogyoku variety, a heritage type renowned for its tartness.

More pictures available at Okada-san's website:

Does a Tengu's Leaf Change Colors?

October 21, 2009: Uncategorized

This is the Tengu above Togura Station. I took a couple of guests from Canada to see him today. Actually, I wanted to see if the trees around his elevation (approx. 450m) were starting to change color or not. The trees above him had pretty red leaves, but lower elevations were just starting to turn color.
Down here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen (370m), we're just starting to get a hint of fall colors.

By the way, I wonder if the leaf the Tengu is holding also changes color in Fall...

When does "Shin" (New) Soba start?

October 21, 2009: Uncategorized

A soba field in Nagano

There's a saying in Japanese that basically translates as, "Wives and tatami mats are best when they are new." Here in Nagano, I think there is one more thing that people get excited about when new: soba. It seems everywhere you look nowadays, there's a Soba Festival going on somewhere in Nagano, and our guests often ask "When does Shin (New) Soba start?" So I checked with my soba man, Yamaguchi-san of Yamaguchi-ya soba restaurant in Togakushi. He told me that harvest has already started, but it takes time to process the soba and verify the quality of the crop. So his restaurant plans on starting New Soba on the first of November. Other restaurants may have already started serving New Soba, but you might want to verify whether or not they use local buckwheat.

So in order to get New Soba, you have to wait a little while longer. I promise, though, it will be worth the wait.

Kamesei's Winter Appeal

October 20, 2009: Uncategorized

Tokyo free weekly magazine Metropolis contacted us about their upcoming Winter Special. We worked out an arrangement for them to feature Kamesei, in hopes of getting English speakers living in Tokyo to come this winter to warm themselves in Kamesei's onsen. Also, we're letting them know that we are central to a lot of Nagano's winter wonderlands: Hakuba, Nozawa, Shiga Kogen, and of course the snow monkeys.

Here is the text we prepared for the magazine:

Experience the heart and soul of Japan this winter and make Kamesei Ryokan your base for exploring Nagano. Our traditional Japanese inn features a soothing onsen hot spring bath. Enjoy the gentle heat of our wood stove and the warm wood construction of our lobby. Kamesei Ryokan features gardens throughout and spacious 10 tatami mat guest rooms where you can relax while lounging in a yukata robe.

Both main onsen baths have outdoor baths as well, hand-built by our proprietor. One is wood, made from yellow cedar. The other is a garden bath made of river stones, and is open to the winter sky allowing you to bathe in the starlight as you soak in the onsen water.

Gourmet Kaiseki-style dinners featuring local and seasonal ingredients as well as full Ryokan Breakfasts are available and are highly recommended in order to truly appreciate the ryokan experience. (Vegetarian meals available upon request.)

Our town of Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen is unique because it is an onsen town -- feel free to use our wooden geta sandals and walk around in your yukata. Browse the many local shops, soak your feet in the footbath, or wander down by the Chikuma River. Or hike up to the mountain castle on the hill behind our town, or rent a bicycle and ride along the Chikuma River. For dinners out, our guests enjoy a wide variety of restaurants.

Kamesei is located central to the best of Nagano: Jigokudani’s snow monkeys, spiritual Togakushi Mountain, magnificent Matsumoto Castle and the Japanese Alps are all popular day trips. We are also a little over an hour by car from Nagano’s top ski areas – Hakuba, Nozawa and Shiga Kogen. Make an onsen stop-over on your way to or from or between skiing.

Helpful itinerary planning for Nagano is gladly provided by our proprietor. Tyler is an American who would be happy to share insight into his adopted home here in the Japanese countryside. Night View tours, 5am Zazen Meditation, Thursday Night Lion Dance practices are just some of the complimentary "excursions" offered to our guests.

Japanese Classes in Nagano

October 19, 2009: Uncategorized

The Nagano Foreign Language Center has been reborn and is now NaGA International. Not only has the building been totally remodelled, but their business focus has changed, too, adding Japanese Language classes for foreigners on top of the foreign language classes and translation business they had previously done.

Often times, our foreign guests here at Kamesei are curious and ask about Japanese language. I explain the reasons for having 4 different writing systems and some of the basic logic behind the language. If NaGA Int'l had Japanese language workshops, I'd be able to recommend them to our guests.

That's what I talked about today with NaGA International's president, Tsuchiya-san. In return, Tsuchiya-san gave me and my Nagano Inbound Summit partners some advice on our endeavors. Hopefully we'll be able to cooperate more in the future!

Thanks to everyone's support, the 2009 Halloween Party in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen was a fun success. Including the haunted house on Saturday night, approx. 100 kids were able to take part in the Halloween fun, myself and the other Westerners in town were able to share a little of our own culture with everyone, and we helped liven up Togura Kamiyamada Onsen for a weekend.

For me, the most memorable part of this very Western celebration was something uniquely Japanese. At one point on Sunday afternoon, we had 4 real, live Geisha ladies go through our haunted house where a real, live Togakushi Ninja was hiding. How cool is that? That also gave me a hint for next year's haunted house theme: Ninjas!
