亀清旅館のロビーの中庭側にこのかわいいヤモリが遊びに来てくれました。ヤモリ（＝家守）が来てくれたら運が良いですかな？まあ、信州はどれだけ自然で恵まれている家の証拠ですよね。
A little gecko came to Kamesei Ryokan to say "hi". He was climbing a window in our lobby by the 'naka-niwa' central garden. According to one of my Facebook friends, "Gecko is 家守(ヤモリ 'yamori') in Japanese. It means house protector = good to see him hanging around in your property. Don't mess with him. And let him be."
杏農家の杏宝園さんの事務所にお客さんと一緒に顔を出してみたら、採りたての杏で選別の作業で盛り上がっていました。今年は豊作だそうです。（２０１３年は花の時期で霜で損害があったため、杏が少なかった。）
写真から杏の尼酸っぱい香りは分かりますでしょうか？
I went with a guest and paid a visit to local apricot grower "Kyohoen". They were busy sorting freshly picked apricots that had just arrived from the nearby orchard along the Chikuma River.
This year apparently is a bumper crop for apricots. It is fortunate, because last year's was a disaster due to a frost hitting the orchards right at flowering time.
Can you smell the tart aroma of the apricots from the picture?
ケーブルテレビJ:COMの「地域の絶品」番組の8月放送に千曲市の杏が紹介されます。
日本のそれぞれの地域の隠れ絶品を毎月に紹介する番組で、今回の杏が2014年度の7番目となる。「里山資本主義」の応援だそうです。
千曲市「あんずの里」がこれで日本全国に更に有名になりそう。まだまだ「杏」の美味しさが知らない人が沢山いらっしゃるので、こうやってJ:COMで紹介して頂いて、嬉しいです。
あんずの里の近場の温泉地として戸倉上山田温泉も紹介して頂けるので、我が亀清旅館は代表として撮影してくれます。

2014年の戸倉上山田温泉夏祭りは7月19・20日で開催される予定で、それに向かって上山田神楽保存会が毎週木曜日に練習しています。
今回の練習に我が子供達も応援で来てくれました。何方か一緒に行きたい方がいらっしゃれば、どうぞ声をかけてください。
The 2014 Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival will be held on July 19th and 20th. The shishi lion troupe I belong to has been practicing every Thursday to get ready.
On this particular practice day, two of my children came along to cheer us on. If anyone would like to watch one of the practices, just let me know. Everyone is welcome!
２０１４年の千曲川鮎釣りの解禁は６月２８日でした。それに合わせて、亀清旅館のChef武井は会席メニューの焼き魚を鮎塩焼きに切り替えました。
Ayu Fishing Season on the Chikuma River for 2014 started on June 28th. In commemoration, Kamesei Ryokan's Chef Takei switched the 'yakisakana' dish in his kaiseki-style dinner to Salt-rubbed Grilled Ayu.
7月の新聞雑誌「くらしの知恵」（地方新聞によって名前が違うらしい）をご覧になりましたか？特集は「奥田政行と訪ねる日本の四季： 長野・春の野沢菜」でした。
山形県鶴岡市のイタリアンレストラン「アル・ケッチャーノ」の奥田シェフが毎月、日本のどこかの地方の名産物を紹介するコラムです。今月は
千曲市の拘り漬物屋「木（こ）の花屋」の宮城さん
と
千曲市の杏農家「杏宝園」の高松さん
奥田シェフがそれぞれの畑を見学して、宮城さんと高松さんの工夫を聴いたりしました。そして、木の花屋のお店に戻ってシェフのアイディア料理のアレンジで盛り上がりました。

ちなみに、奥田チェフと宮城さん及び高松さんの結び役は…この青い目の若旦那でございます！(前年度に私が経済産業省から補助金を引っ張ってきて、奥田シェフを呼んだのがきっかけでした。）
Kamesei Ryokan welcomed 480 guests from overseas last year, from 27 different countries, including tiny Lithuania and, for the first time, Chile in South America.
姨捨の「田毎の月」で有名な棚田（戸倉上山田温泉から車で１０分）の田植えは始まりました。
今度の満月は５月１５日です。田んぼ毎にお月様の反射が見れるかな？
毎月の満月に姨捨の長楽寺で「満月ライブ」が行われます。主催者の宮城さんから：
「5月15日の長楽寺さんの満月ライブは18時から踊りです。その後、さらしな棚田バンドさん、吉川忠英さんのギターです♬

母の日はまた私ども戸倉上山田温泉の旅館若旦那・若女将たちが手作業で作ったコサージュをお越しになったお母さん達にプレゼントしました。
１１日の朝６時から、カラコロ足湯の公園で行われた「青空朝市」で手作りのコサージュをお母さん達にお渡ししました。
お陰様で、非常に喜ばれました。
お母さん達の皆様、母の日はおめでとうございます。
Mothers Day here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada means free corsages for all mothers. The junior innkeepers gathered to make the carnation corsages by hand, and we passed them out to the mothers who came to the Sunday Morning Farmers Market.
I would like to offer a big congratulations to all mothers on this special day!
千曲市の桑原地区に歴史的の開眼寺があります。その住職、柴田文啓さんは毎朝５時に座禅を組んでいますので１０日に久しぶりに二男と行きました。やはり、練習不足で座禅はなかなか難しかった。その後、柴田さんに誘われて、お茶をしました。その時にのお話しです。
（普通はこういう場面で「宗教」と「政治」と、長野の場合、「どこのおそば屋さんが美味しいか」の話がタブーですが、許してください。）
柴田さんによると、現代の日本では仏教の役割はお葬式だけと思われてきた。しかし、仏教の教えを日常的の生活に取り組むべきだと。
座禅はその道具の一つ。
例えば、禅門答は学生や社会人に重要な修業になると。
「隻手声あり、その声を聞け」を修業するのは学校や仕事にも役に立つ。
柴田さんは５月１７日から東京で古川 周賢さん（東京大学の老大師と講演会のシリーズを開催するそうです。座禅を通じて、自分の日々の糧を得たらどうですか？
講演会も良いし、朝５時座禅も良いです。ご一緒に行きませんか？
What is the sound of one hand clapping? The answer to that question may help you with your studies or work.
It is one of the classic questions monks of the Zen Buddhist tradition use to sharpen their minds. Our local Zen Temple, Kaigen-ji, offers meditation sessions every morning at 5am. I went with one of our sons but it had been so long that I was mentally rusty. Following the meditation session, the monk, Shibata-san, invited us for tea. There he explained his latest project.
(NOTE: It is said that topics such as "Religion" and "Politics" -- and here in Nagano, "Which is the best soba restaurant" are taboo, but allow me just this once to delve into "Religion".)
Shibata-san said that Buddhism is in danger of being relegated to a role as a purveyor of funerals in today's Japan. He is hoping to find a way to bring Buddhism into people's daily lives.
One was is through Zen meditation, which is actually superb mental training for study and work as well as just for religious reasons.
Hence, deeply pondering the sound of one hand clapping can be beneficial for students and business people.
Shibata-san will be offering a series of study sessions in Tokyo starting May 17th with Tokyo University prof Shuken Furukawa. If you can't make the lecture series, feel free to join me for 5am Zazen medition instead!
