Spring Snow and the Moon

March 13, 2012: Uncategorized

Kamesei Ryokan and the vicinity covered in spring snow.

Woke up this morning to the stunning sight of fresh snow covering Kamesei's naka-niwa garden, the roofs, the nearby hills -- everything was blanketed in beautiful snow. About 20cm of the white stuff.

Unfortunately, snow this time of year doesn't stick around for very long. But while it's here, with the turquoise blue sky and the moon shining down, it makes for an amazingly beautiful sight.

I hope everyone in Nagano takes the time to appreciate the beauty. For me, I'm off to Tokyo for 2 days of sales promoting our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada.

Filial Piety, M-Wave Style

3 Generations Skating at M-Wave

M-Wave

"Back when I was a schoolkid, some days I used to iceskate to school." My dad, who grew up in the Midwest, used to tell me that story. My parents flew to Japan to come see us in Nagano. Our family loves to go iceskating, so during my parent's trip I really wanted to go skating with them and our kids.

For this season, M-Wave in Nagano City held their last open-skate day this Sunday March 11th. So we all piled in the car and drove out to skate. For having not skated for decades, Grandpa did really well.

Japan talks a lot about filial piety. I was grateful to be able to realize my dream of filial piety -- skating with Dad and with our kids. All thanks to M-Wave.

Hijiri Museum Renovation Update

Brochure for the Hijiri Museum

On the other side of Kamuriki Mountain from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is the small village of Omi. Located there along the bank of Lake Hijiri is the Hijiri Museum. The museum has been closed for the past year for remodelling, and is scheduled to re-open at the end of April, 2012.

The Hijiri Museum is housed in a 47 year old 2-story wooden building. Before the remodel, it's displays were mainly about local folklore and flora/fauna. With the remodel, there will be new displays about Omi Village's Zenkoji-Kaido (the old road between Matsumoto and Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City) heritage, as well as its silk making and paper making history.

Hijiri Lake is kind of a hidden gem. Not many people know of it, so it makes a great escape during the summer. Even during the peak season, the lake is quiet, and it is high up in the mountains so is refreshingly cool even on the hottest days.

Our family is looking forward to going there this summer and seeing the newly remodelled museum.

A Love Letter from a Guest

March 9, 2012: Uncategorized

A guest's compliment on my home-made cookies.

A Long-Term Guest for Kamesei Ryokan's naka-niwa Garden

Kamesei's newest guest -- a white heron

The white heron in the picture is not a statue. It's an actual bird, and it has been stalking the koi in our central garden's pond here at Kamesei Ryokan.

A while ago it started visiting our garden but would be startled by the smallest movement and fly off. But lately it's gotten used to us, so no matter what we do it doesn't budge. It just keeps standing there, seemingly drooling over our koi fish. He seems to know that we can't fly and catch him.

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyada is nestled in between the surrounding hills and the Chikuma River, making for a very natural setting. Just last night a guest saw a raccoon walking on one of our guestrooms. And in the past, I've seen a deer family walk across the road above our town.

It seems the animals like our onsen, too!

Obasute Masamune's Open-Brewery Day 2012

Obasute Masamune's Open Brewery Event

The main local sake brewery for our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is Obasute Masamune in Chikuma City's Yawata district. Once a year they open the brewery up for tours, and for 2012 the "Open Brewery Day" will be Saturday 24-March. Tours will take place from 10am to 4pm.

Besides being able to see the inside of the brewery, guests will also be treated to sample tastings as well as free amazake (sweet sake) and tonjiru (pork soup).

Located on the old Zenkoji Kaido road between Matsumoto and Nagano City, the Obasute Masamune brewery is rich in historical architecture. The thick earthen-walled storehouses with their distinctive curved kawara tile-clad roof are remnants of a time long gone by. There is even a 300+ year old Japanese pine tree in their garden.

The Obasute Masamune Open-Brewery Day is an excellent opportunity to tour this historical brewery.

Spring 2012 Brochure with Geisha Show debut

Chikuma City's Tourism Association has released the Spring 2012 edition of its quarterly brochure. (Guess who is the vice-chairperson of the PR committee -- me!)

For this edition, the item I am most proud of is the new Geisha Show. Here at Kamesei Ryokan we had been organizing these mini Geisha shows for small groups of foreigners. With a little negotiation, the "show" has become official, and has made its debut in the quarterly brochure with this edition.

For anyone interested in the brochure, feel free to inquire here at Kamesei.

A Zebra Came to Kamesei

March 4, 2012: Uncategorized

We had an unusual guest here at Kamesei Ryokan -- a zebra.

Well, to be more precise, a zebra bus. From Gunma Safari Park. To drop off brochures.

Apparently this year's theme is "Kizuna", which basically means 'friendship' or 'connectivity'. It's been a common theme here in Japan in the aftermath of the March 11th earthquake / tsunami / nuclear disaster.

As the 1-year anniversary approaches, I am reminded of all the distressing images of the triple disaster. At the time, those images hit me really hard. I felt like I needed a break, so I took our daughter for a trip to our local zoo at Chausuyama. Watching the seemingly care-free animals had a soothing effect.

I imagine the animals at Gunma Safari park have a similar effect, their version of 'kizuna'.
