由布院は敵わない所がありながら、長野（特に軽井沢）と変わらない部分も多い様に感じました。私が期待し過ぎていたせいか、ふたを開けたらちょっとがっかりしました。

由布院の賑やかなショッピング街で最初に入ってみたお店は手ぬぐい屋さんだった。（ご存知の方が多いけど、私は手ぬぐいフェティッシュで、数十枚を持っています。）　由布院らしい手拭いを買いたいと思ったら・・・無いと言われた。見れば見るほど、トリックアート美術館とかクラシックアメ車展示館など、軽井沢や那須と同じような店の並び。

電線や電柱は由布院ぐらいが地下にしていると思ったら、戸倉上山田と同じぐらいに多い。

看板は場所によって自然な格好していたが、思い切り派ではのもあった。

街並はもっと整備されて、もっと統一されていると期待していました。

そして、夜は地元の旅館組合の方々と交流した時に、それまで聞いていた「由布院の成功している秘密」の伝説は色々と聞いてみました。

例えば、それぞれの宿の料理長たちがお互いの調理場で集まって、情報交換をしている事とか、

周りの畑がさら地にならない様に地元の農家から優先的に仕入している事、

の様な事は業界の中では伝説となっていました。

しかし、地元の組合員とお話ししたら、

料理長の情報交換はほんの一部の宿だけ。大体オーナーシェフの小さい所のみ。

食材は地元じゃ採れ切れない。もちろん、地産地消はしているけど、やれ切れないので外からも取る。

伝説と現実が違って、吃驚しました。

敵わない所と変わらないところ、良い勉強になりました。

由布院へ行く人には大分や福岡から電車、高速バス、高速道路など、様々な方法がある。今回は私が初めて訪ねるとの事で、せっかくだったからＪＲ「由布院の森」と言う特別列車に乗って行きました。

戸倉上山田温泉の地元のしなの鉄道は来年度にイベント列車を購入する様に計画しているそうです。「由布院の森」など、九州の特徴的な電車は良い参考になると思いました。

九州の電車の感想の写真です。

Access to Yufuin, Japan's most popular onsen resort, is by freeway, highway bus or JR train from Oita City and/or Fukuoka City. Perhaps the most fitting is taking JR's Yufuin no Mori special train from Fukuoka, which is what I took.

Here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, our local private train operator Shinano Railway is planning on introducing a special sightseeing train next fiscal year. I think Kyushu's special trains such as Yufuin no Mori would serve as a great example.

九州の列車 Kyushu Trains

由布院はこのごろ「人気温泉地トップ１００」の上位になっています。先日は亀清旅館が会員となっているジャパニーズ・イン・グループの研修会が湯布院で行われたので、せっかくの機会だったから由布院を視察してきました。

まずは長野から由布院までどう何行けば良いかとの問題。

前から松本空港からの飛行機に興味がありました。九州のお客さんに案内が出来るかなと。この機会で乗ってみました。

松本から出発する分にはうんと楽です。空港は高速道路から降りて数分と言う便利な所だし、駐車場は無料です。

福岡までは１時間５０分で、かなりスムーズです。

福岡空港はまた便利で、中心街まで地下鉄で行ける。

松本・福岡の飛行機は便利さで言えば抜群。料金は往復で４～５万円で妥当だと思ったら…

羽田・大分はＬＣＣで9800円だそうです。

Yufuin is an onsen resort town in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu Island. For the past several years it has consistently been ranked at the top of Japan's Top 100 Onsen Resorts list. The Japanese Inn Group of which Kamesei is a member recently held a conference in Yufuin, so I took advantage of the opportunity and went to see what was so special.

First issue -- how to get there from Nagano. Fuji Dream Airlines offers daily, 1-hour and 50 minute flights from Matsumoto to Fukuoka Airport. I had wanted to see the feasibility of enticing customers from Kyushu to come to Nagano using the flight, so I decided to try it myself.

Matsumoto Airport is very convenient -- just minutes off the freeway and connected to Matsumoto Station by a bus. The airport also offers free parking making it attractive to people from Nagano flying out.

And at the other end, Fukuoka Airport is perhaps even more convenient -- just an easy subway ride from the downtown area.

Overall, I thought the flight was a great option. And the cost, 40-50,000 yen round trip, seemed reasonable. But another conference attendee flew on a LCC from Haneda to Oita Airport for only 9800 yen. Hmmm. The Matsumoto-Fukuoka flight is convenient, but it may be a bit luxurious.

地獄谷野猿公苑のお猿は「スノーモンキー」と呼ばれていて、雪があった方が更に可愛く見える。この頃は雪が本格的に降ってきたようで、本格的なスノーモンキーになってきました。

バスの時刻表も冬版となりましたので戸倉上山田からの日帰りツアーとしてご参考して下さい。

The world-famous "Snow Monkeys" of the Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park are cute any time of the year soaking in their onsen bath. But it's when there is snow that they are truly in their most photogenic element. And that area has started to get their winter snow fall, so now is your chance!

Winter bus schedules are now in effect, so I updated the train and bus matrix to get you from our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada to the monkey park trailhead, Kanbayashi, and back for an easy day trip.

We just had a guest from Sydney, Australia make the trip. He said he 'only' took about 200 pictures of the monkeys. The snow made for a dramatic backdrop, especially on the walk from Kanbayashi through the beautiful evergreen forest.
