Yawarakai" Leaf

April 15, 2009: Uncategorized

Not a fig leaf, but still the same.

Nagano's Ryokan Junior Association held its General Meeting in Matsumoto today.

So why is the image picture a leaf?

I'd like to ask Yamada-san of Shibu Onsen, but unfortunately he probably doesn't remember.

It was his "graduation" celebration from the Junior Assoc. From now on he will be in the parent association. In order to properly divest himself from his Junior colleagues, he apparently felt the need to divest himself of his clothing. Hence the leaf. Perhaps a bit too small, but it did the job. Yamada-san successfully graduated. Congratulations!

(Japan sure has some interesting rituals...)

First the apricot, then cherry, now Peach Blossoms, @ Kawanakajima

April 14, 2009: Uncategorized

The apricot blossoms in Mori "Anzu no Sato" are gone, the cherry blossoms around Togura Kamiyamada Onsen have almost all fallen, so what's next? The peach blossoms! However, you don't hear about people doing hanami under the peach trees. I guess it's because everyone likes the trees for their fruit more than their flowers. And in this area, we have all the delicious, juicy fruit from the peach trees in nearby Kawanakajima district. I can't wait to eat those peaches this summer!

April 13, 2009: Uncategorized

Behind Kamesei Ryokan is Chuo Park. Every year around this time, it turns into a cherry blossom wonderland, and comes alive with hanami parties. Yesterday I attended one such flower viewing party with the Kamiyamada Okagura group. We performed a lion dance, and then proceeded to kick back and enjoy the cherry blossoms. In the group next to us, a younger guy pulled out a niko, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, and performed some songs for everybody. The combination of the beautiful flowers and the elegant music was sublime. This was one of those "This is why I came to Japan" deals.

Exotic Lion Dance

April 12, 2009: Uncategorized

In my previous life, I once assisted at a photo shoot involving moving a grand piano to the top of a hill overlooking a lake. The dramatic setting, with the Seattle skyline in the background, with the exotic grand piano, was sooooooo cool.
Today I was reminded of that. Our Kamiyamada Okagura group did a performance at Arato Castle above Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. The setting, with the onsen town and the Chikuma River valley in the background, in the cool castle setting, and our flashy okagura group, was just too cool.
I'm sure the guests of the castle were surprised to see the lion dance, but I think we succeeded in livening up the castle, one of Chikuma City's heritage sites.

Full Moon over the Switchback

Nearby Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Obasute Station, which features a spectacular night view. I often take guests there after their dinner for a special "Obasute Night View / Local Legends" tour. Last night's was especially nice with the added drama of the full moon. I asked our guests to take some pictures for the new Kamesei Ryokan brochure we are making. I want to thank Kinoshita-san, Satoh-san and Shibahara-san for their cooperation!

April 10, 2009: Uncategorized

It's cherry blossom time at Matsumoto Castle

I had to go into Matsumoto for a meeting at Asama Onsen. It was a lunch meeting, and I was treated to Matsumoto's specialty, "sanzoku-yaki" (see separate entry). We also stopped by the bicycle specialty shop there (also see separate entry). After the meeting, I scooted over to Matsumoto Castle. A guest the previous day had said the castle's cherry blossoms were starting to bloom. Plus the sky was clear, and the Alps still had snow, so I figured it would be a beautiful sight.
I wasn't disappointed! There were all kinds of people -- locals, tourists, families with kids, grannies and grandpas; all doing all sorts of things -- strolling, singing, napping, taking pictures (like me). The magnificent crow-black castle, the brilliant blue sky, the pink blooms of the cherry trees, and the touch of white on the Alps all made for spectacular scenery for photographing. But it was the beauty in the details that struck me. A white swan gracefully swimming with the black castle in the background. A grand cherry tree perfectly framed by one of the castle's gates. And what I really liked was the scene of the delicate cherry blossoms set against the massive boulders making up the walls of the moats. It was one of those, "This is why I came to Nagano" moments.

Matsumoto Specialty: "Sanzoku-yaki" chicken

April 10, 2009: Uncategorized

Bandit Chicken

Matsumoto is famous for "basashi" which is raw meat of, well, let's just say my rodeo cowboy friends wouldn't be happy with what animal the meat is from. Anyways, I just had the pleasure of trying another Matsumoto specialty, "sanzoku-yaki" chicken. The dictionary says Sanzoku is a bandit. This chicken is basically like "kara-age" fried chicken except that instead of the chicken being cut into small chunks, a whole thigh for example is fried whole. Maybe the bandits were on the run and didn't have time to cut the chicken first? Anyways, when you go to 'Moto, keep your eyes (and taste buds) out for Bandit Chicken.

Raita-san and his stable

After my meeting in Matsumoto, I stopped at the Bike Ranch bike store to get my road bike tuned up. I met the owner, Raita-san. He was an Olympic Athlete at the Sydney Games. Raita-san opened up his shop a year ago, and has been active in building mountain bike trails in the Matsumoto area. Civic improvement via cycling -- way to go!

The Zenkoji Branch Temple at Togura Kamiyamada also celebrating Gokaicho

Often times, I take guests to the temple above our onsen town after picking them up from Togura Station to give them a birds-eye view of our town and the Chikuma River valley. Yesterday when I did so, I saw the temple, a branch of Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, was decorated up for the big Gokaicho event. Even our temple is getting into the the celebration for this once-every-seven-years event.

Kamesei's Garden Maintenance starting

April 8, 2009: Uncategorized

Okada-san at work

Kamesei Ryokan is set on approximately 800 tsubos (1 tsubo = 3.3 sq.meters). Throughout that area we have gardens all over -- in between guest rooms, on either side of the watari-roka passageway, our naka-niwa garden with koi pond, and more. With the warm weather we have had lately, the plants in the garden are starting to transition from winter to spring. Our gardener, Okada-san, came today for garden maintenance. He pointed out all the new growth. We'll be getting some pic's from him soon.
