The Real Deal for Nagano Soba

上山田温泉夏祭りはどんどん近付いてきています。7月の海の日の連休、16日（土）と17日（日）に行う予定です。それに向かって、今は我々旅館の皆が寄付集まりで一生懸命あちらこちらに回っております。皆様のご協力のお蔭で最大に出来そうです。本当に感謝、感謝!

今週は私が寄付集まりで長野市の北端から、佐久市まで飛んで回りました。皆様のご協力を頂いて、そして沢山の良い出会いが出来ました。

その出会いの一つはおそば屋さん「草笛」でした。

まずは少し背景を。

長野県の代表のお料理はお蕎麦です。もう、「信州=蕎麦」って感じ。お蕎麦の店は数えれないほど数があります。その中で、草笛は400年の歴史があります。

良いですか?お蕎麦の業界の激しい競争の中で、草笛は400年間続いています。すごいと思いませんか?235年間の歴史しかない国から来た私には、想像がつきません。

草笛の本店は小諸です。懐古園の隣。長野市や上田市など、全部で6店舗があります。戸倉上山田温泉の団体のお客さんは来る途中で懐古園見学・お蕎麦＠草笛と言うのは人気ルートだそうです。

その関係で本店へ寄付をお願いしにお邪魔させて頂きました。ちょうどお昼の時間だった（偶然かな?）ので、ついでに昼食をとりました。

恥ずかしい事ですが、私の草笛デビューでした。存在はもちろん前から存じ上げましたが(量が多いとの事で有名）、実際に食べるのは初めてでした。感想はと聞かれたら、久しぶりに美味しいおそばを食べたって感じ。これなら県外からお越しになる方々が「信州そば」の代表になる事、納得が出来ます。味と言え、環境（綺麗な空気やお水）と言え、お店の雰囲気と言え、その歴史と言え、とにかく、自信を持ってお勧めできます。

Kamiyamada Onsen's summer festival is rapidly approaching. It will be held again this year on the Marine Day 3-day weekend in July (the 16th and 17th). The other ryokan owners and I have been running around all over the place gathering donations for the big event. So far, we are on pace to be able to throw our regular big bash.

This past week, my donation running took me from the northern edge of Nagano City way down to Saku City. I am always amazed at everyone's generosity for our festival. All I can say is, "Thank you!"

For me, the highlight of this week was stopping at a soba noodle restaurant in Komoro City. Kusabue is located right next to 'Kaikoen' (Komoro Castle).

First a bit of background.

Nobody does soba noodles as well as Nagano. If you come to Nagano, it is absolutely against the rules to not have soba. But with more soba restaurants than one could count, how do you know which one to go to? Well, Kusabue has been around for over 400 years, so that's a good sign that they know their noodles. The main store is in Komoro right next to the famed 'hole castle' Kaikoen. (Most castles tend to be perched on the top of a hill. When you see Komoro's, it's distinctive configuration will let you know where it's nickname comes from.)

For many groups that come to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, exploring Kaikoen and then eating lunch at Kusabue is a popular stop-over along the way. Hence the shop's support of our festival. We just happened to time our visit right at lunch hour (coincidence?) and so decided to have a bowl of noodles for lunch.

I'm embarrassed to say, but this was my Kusabue debut. Of course, I had heard about the restaurant (they're especially known for their generous volumes), but this was my first time to put chopsticks to their noodles. So how was it? Now I know why Kusabue is so well-known and well-regarded. There's something about the flavor, the environment (being made in an area with such clean air and water), the shop's ambience, and the history that makes Kusabue's soba stand out. And I should know -- I've had lots of Nagano soba.

For guests coming from out of the prefecture (or from overseas for that matter) and wanting to try Nagano's soba, I can confidently say that Kusabue is a suitable representative of our famed soba.

「繭」を思わせる庭 Silk-Themed Garden

「あっ、床の間に糸巻機械が飾ってある！」

「えっ、庭に蚕棚が掛けてある!」

と、先ほどに亀清の「紬」テーマの客室に案内したら、お客様が感動してくれました。

私が説明しました。「そうですよ。その壁に飾ってあるタペストリーは上田紬で、私の手作りです。去年は庭師二胡の庭を作ってもらったので、桑の木も植えました。」

それでまたお客様が嬉しくて思い出して「子供のころは桑の実を食べっちゃいけないと言われたが、良くこそこそで食べたよね」と。

そして、この庭のもう一つな特徴は繭を思わせる花もあります。今は蛍袋（Campanula punctata Lam.）が咲いています。普段は紫の花だが、庭師が珍しい白い花のを見つけて、植えてくれました。

まあ、気が付かない方がほとんどでしょうけど、私にとっては非常に嬉しい所。

"Ahh, isn't that a silk thread spool there in the tokonoma alcove?"

"Hey, and those are silk worm raising trays there hanging on the garden wall, right?"

Those were the comments of tonights this afternoon as I showed them their guest room that we have been remodelling after a tsumugi (silk) theme.

I explained to them a bit further. "That wall hanging is made of silk in the Ueda tsumugi tradition, by none other than yours truly. And in the garden there is a mulberry plant."

That started a whole new round of memories. "Oh, remember how we were always told not to eat the mulberries but we snuck them in our pockets and ate them anyways?"

We had our gardener make design the new garden around a silk theme. One of the plants blooming right now is a spottled lantern flower, Campanula punctata Lam. Usually the flowers are purple, but our gardener managed to find a rare one with white flowers. Doesn't the shape vaguely resemble a silk coccoon? Most people probably wouldn't realize the connection, but that's find. It's like my little secret.

Kamesei's 2010 Figures for Overseas Guests

長野県に頼まれて、亀清旅館の2010年のインバウンド（海外からの宿泊者）の人数を調査しました。チャートの様に563人泊でした。亀清の全体の9.8％です。

様々の国からお越しになって頂きました。順位は：
１．アメリカ
２．シンガポール
３．オーストラリア
４．イギリス
５．スペイン

でも、2010年より、3.11以降はどうなったか、知りたいですよね。今年の3，4，5月は海外からのお客様が64人泊でした。去年と比較したら、65％減です。福島の原発問題の影響が大きいですね。

しかし、65％減というより、35%来て頂いた事の方に集中したいです。64人泊の分の旅行者が原発問題があっても、日本、長野にお越しになりました。日本の文化についての興味が原発の恐れに負けなかった事。それはとっても嬉しい事です。
それだけ日本の文化・長野・亀清旅館は魅力があるという事。

文部科学省は毎日に長野県の放射線モニタリング調査結果を発表しています。この数字の通り、長野県は安全ですよ。お越しになった旅行者に聞いてごらん：信州は相変わらず楽しんで頂けます。

As per the request from the Nagano Prefectural Government, I tallied up the Inbound (travellers from overseas) figures for Kamesei Ryokan from last year. As you can see, there were 563 stays. That represents 9.8% of Kamesei's total.

We enjoyed having guests from various countries. The top 5 origins were:
1. USA
2. Singapore
3. Australia
4. UK
5. Spain

However, more than the 2010 figures, there is a lot of concern of what has happened since the 3.11 earthquake / tsunami / nuclear disaster. For the months of March, April and May this year, we had 64 stays. That is down 65% from last year.

To be honest, though, I prefer to focus on the 35% that did come. Despite the concerns from the Fukushima nuclear plants, we had 64 stays from overseas guests. For those people, their interest in Japan's culture, Nagano's nature, and the relaxation from staying in an onsen ryokan won out over their fear of the nuclear problem.

Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) continues to monitor Nagano's radiation level on a daily basis. As you can see by the readings, the level has been on par with the readings prior to 3.11. In other words, Nagano remains safe for travel. Just ask the people who stayed the 64 nights at Kamesei these past few months!

Obasute Rice Fields Reflecting the Moon

姨捨の「田毎の月」の棚田の田植えはすでに終わっているけど、稲がまだそんなに伸びていないので、今月の満月でまた「田んぼ毎に映っている月様」を見るチャンス!

夕べにまた行ってみました。写真はうまく取れなかったけど、
お月様の柔らかい光、
姨捨山のシルエットの背景、
田んぼの稲の模様、
キラキラ輝くお月様の反射、
水のちょろちょろの流れの音、
カエルの歌

幻い風情。

The famous moon-reflecting Obasute terranced rice fields are all planted for this season. But the seedlings are still young, meaning this month's full moon is another chance to see the moon reflections.

Last night, I drove to Obasute to check out the scene.
The light of the full moon falling softly over the fields,
The silhouette of Obasute Mountain in the backgound,
The mesmerizing patterns of the rice seedlings in the paddies,
The glistening of the moon's reflection
The gurgling of the water flowing through the fields,
The sounds of the frogs serenading the night.

All in all, a magical scene.







日本語の勉強をやめようかな?! No More Nihongo?!

Which one is correct?

どうでも良い事ですが、私は日本語の勉強をやめようかと考えています。

まずは、その背景:　私は大学に入ってから日本語を勉強し始まった。２０歳まで「アリガトウ」の意味さえ分からなかった。大学や留学で苦労して、何とか喋れるようになった。日本語の勉強は確かに大変だった。特に漢字。しかし、唯一安心したのは、変な例外がない。漢字をいったん覚えれば、ずっと使えるという事で、漢字の勉強に頑張った。

それで、日本に引っ越ししてきて、うちの子供達がここの小学校に入って、宿題の手伝いで今度は私が日本語の勉強するほうじゃなくて、教える立場になった。

何で「は」は「わ」と呼ぶ時があるか？とか、私も悩んできたこと、うちの子供たちに質問された。その中で、漢字はとにかく変な例外がなくて、安心して教えれた。時には私が習ったころの書け順が今の学校の教えで変わっている例もあったが、漢字実態は変更なくて、安心。

そして、５年生のアンディー君の漢字の宿題をチェックして、「国」があった。Andy君は「際」の右上は「又」と書いた。「又」じゃなくて、「マ」だよと指摘したら、いいえ、教科書では「又」だよと言われた。教科書を見せてもらったので、驚いたが「又」となっていた。

私はこちらに引っ越しするまで、１１年間国際貿易で務めたので、ずっと「マ」と書いた。１１年間でずっと間違えていた訳？大学のころで使った辞書と確認したら、やはり「マ」となっていた。見たら、パスコンも「マ」。

どっちが正しい？！本の出版社まで電話で聞いた。(こんな頑固のお父さんがいるかい？）そして、パスコンなどは読みやすく「マ」となっているが、教科書は書きやすく「又」となり、両方が正しいと言われた。

つまり、私が苦労して勉強したのと違う字が正しい？納得できねえ。こんないい加減の教え方は許せない。私は何の為に苦労して勉強してきたか？頭に来ちゃった。日本語の勉強をもう、やめたくなっちゃう。

This doesn't have anything to do with the ryokan, but I've decided to quit studying Japanese.

Allow me to explain. I didn't start studying the Japanese language until I got into college. I didn't even know what 'arigatou' meant until I was around 20. And learning the language, especially all of those kanji characters was a bitch. But the one thing that kept me sane was knowing kanji doesn't have exceptions. Once you learn a character, you've learnt it for eternity.

Since we moved to Japan and our kids started school here, I've gone from studying Japanese to helping teaching it to our kids. I've helped them understand some of the language's quirks, but through it all have been the rock-solid, un-changing kanji characters. Maybe a few updated stroke orders here or there, but the characters remain the same.

So today, when I helped our 5th grades son Andy with his kanji homework, I corrected his writing for the 'sai' in 'kokusai' (international). He wrote it with the right upper part having 2 legs. I told him it only has 1. He insisted his textbook says 2.

Before moving to Japan, I worked at an international trading company for 11 years, and wrote sai with 1 leg more times than I care to remember. But Andy showed me his textbook, and by golly, 2 legs. I dug out my old dictionary, and sure enough, 1 leg. How about computers? 1 leg. So which is correct? I actually called text book publisher (what kind of Dad would do that?) and asked. They said printers use 1 leg for ease of reading, but text books teach 2 legs for ease of writing; both are correct.

So a different way from what I learned is correct? What a bunch of bull. Talk about wishy-washy. I feel like I wasted all those years of struggling to learn the language. I feel like wanting to quit studying!

家族で自転車乗りでラベンダー畑へ行きました。おフランスのラ・プロヴァンス？ワシントン州のスクイム?いいえ、ここ、上山田!

亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉から自転車で約10分で、広くて良いラベンダー畑があります。万葉スポーツエリアーの一部です。新しく出来た戸倉上山田温泉周辺のハイキング・サイクリングマップにも紹介されています。

今は綺麗に咲いているので、ぜひ見に、いいえ、香りをかみに行ってみてください。

Our family went on a bicycle ride to some lavender fields. Is it La Provence in the south of France? Or maybe Sequim on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula? Nope, the fields are right here in Kamiyamda.

In fact, the Manyo Sports Area lavender fields are just a 10 minute bike ride from Kamesei and our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada.

I highly suggesting going and seeing, more than that, smelling the lavender fields!

日曜日に戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合の婦人部はチャリティーバザーを行いました。お皿からカラオケまで、さまざまな品物。全額が旧上山田町のそのころの姉妹都市、岩手県山田町へ行きます。山田町は3.11の地震と津波から被災されましたの上山田は直接で山田町へ義捐金を送っています。このバザーでお陰様で約８万円の義捐金を集めました。

亀清旅館の女将社長を含めて、婦人部の皆様、ご苦労様でした。そして、私と一緒に準備と片付けを手伝った旅館青年部の皆もご苦労！

戸倉上山田温泉の東北応援チャリティーイベントはまだまだ続きます。６月１９日(日）に千曲サイクリングクラブと連携して、ファミリーサイクリングを予定しています。１０：３０に上山田温泉のカラコロ足湯で集合して、千曲川沿いのサイクリング道路で隣の坂城のばら祭りまで行くというイベントです。父の日に合わせて、ご家族での自転車お出かけはいかがでしょうか？問い合わせは亀清旅館へどうぞ。

Yesterday, the proprietresses from our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada, held a charity bazaar and raised approx. US$600 for tsunami-stricken Yamada town in Iwate Prefecture. The junior ryokan association members and I helped out with set-up and take-down, and were glad to assist with this worthy cause.

More Togura Kamiyamada Onsen charity events are still to come. Next up is a Charity Bicycle Ride next Sunday 19-June in conjunction with the Chikuma Cycling Club. We meet at 10:30am at the Kara-Koro footbath, and will ride along the Chikuma River Cycling Road to Sakaki to enjoy the Rose Festival there. 去年の秋に私がこの玄関看板を手彫りで作りました。この春になって、周りのつつじとラベンダーが咲いてきて、カラフルで良い背景になりました。

どうですか?花が看板に合うと思いませんか?

Last Fall, I made this hand-carved sign for Kamesei Ryokan's entrance. Now that it is Spring, the surrounding azalea and lavender are in bloom making a colorful background for the new sign.

ダブル表紙　…　良いでしょう!

この春に作成作業をずっとしていた戸倉上山田温泉ハイキング・サイクリングマップはやっとできました。出来立てホイホイでこれから色んな所に配って行きます。

私にとっては戸倉上山田温泉の魅力の1つは真ん中に流れる千曲川と周辺の山々です。そして千曲沿いのサイクリング道路で川の風情をたっぷり楽しめるし、山は登ればその自然の良さが分かります。この地図を利用して、より多くの人達にその川と山の魅力を体験して頂きたいと思っております。

なおかつ、この夏は特に電気を食う冷房を使わない戦略が大事です。そこで、この地図が役に立つと思います。自転車ツーリングで千曲川沿いの涼しいを楽しめる。山の天辺での温度は下より約５℃ぐらい低いので、山登りでその気持ち良さを感じれます。

サイクリングやハイキングで汗をかけてから、戸倉上山田温泉に戻って、お風呂に入ったらまた最高に気持ちいいです。

その様に、この新しいマップが役に立つように望んでいます。私がマップ作成者の宮坂さんと共にに、千曲サイクリングクラブや里山みどり守る会と紹介するルートを話し合った上で、自らそれぞれのサイクリングとハイキングコースに足を運んで、確認しました。デザインも工夫して、「こんなに楽しいよ!」「こんな所が見れるよ」と分かるように写真を付けて、なかなか良いマップが出来ました。マップ希望者はどうぞ、声をかけてください。

This spring, I've been working on a Hiking / Cycling Map for our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada. It is finally finished and I am so excited to finally get the fresh-off-the-presses new map!

One of the things I love about Togura Kamiyamada is the grand Chikuma River flowing through the middle and the lush green mountains surrounding the town. I hope this new map will encourage lots of people to get out and enjoy cycling along the picturesque Chikuma River using cycling path as well as strap on their hiking boots and experience the natural grandeur of our local mountains.

With the concern for lack of electricity production this summer, everyone will be thinking about ways to not use airconditioning. Here again, our new hiking / cycling map should come in handy. Riding along the Chikuma River Cycling Road is a great way to enjoy the river's refreshing breeze. And if you climb to the top of one of our nearby mountains, you'll be pleased to find the temperature a good 5 degrees cooler than down below.

Plus, after getting all sweaty from cycling or hiking, you can come back to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and enjoy a rejuvenating soak in an onsen bath.

That's how I'm hoping our new map can be useful. The map producer, Miyasaka-san, and I discussed which routes are best with both the Chikuma Cycling Club (for cycling) and the Sato-Yama Midori Mamoru Kai (for hiking), and then rode or hiked each and every course ourselves to verify the details. We added a lot of clever design elements as well as a thorough selection of pictures giving a useful image of the courses and the scenery that can be enjoyed along the way. A pretty darn good map if I do say so myself. If you would like a copy for yourself, just let me know!

七福神巡りの勉強

はい、クイズタイムです。「七福神」の七つを言えますか？

今日は印刷物製造者の宮坂さんと色々戸倉上山田温泉の活性化について、議論した。宮坂さんは戸倉上山田温泉のハイキング・サイクリングマップを一緒に作ってくれたので、本人は温泉に関心を持ってくれています。

色々な話の中で、「七福神巡り」の話題が出た。七福神は何となく知っているけど、詳しい事は知識不足です。宮坂さんに親切に説明してくれたし、二人ともが長野市に用事があって、一緒に行きました。そうすると、参考に善光寺七福神巡りの一部を案内してくれた。写真は一番の刈萱山西光寺の寿老人の像です。（あっ、先のクイズの答えの１つが出てしまいました。）

去年はこの戸倉上山田温泉で「福々巡り」のコースを紹介するパンフが出来ました。いくつかのお寺や神社が載っています。でも、正直って、チラシがただな割にあまり人気がない。

善光寺七福神巡りは恵比寿や弁天さん等（あっ、もう２つがばれてしまいました！）の七福神を触れるコースで、比較的に人気があって、注目を浴びているそうです。色紙は有料だし、七か所でスタンプを押していくけど、各寺社でまた払うそうです。それでも人気がある。

やはり、日本人の心の中で「七福神」のなじみがある。

戸倉上山田温泉の七福神巡りの設立には善光寺からヒントを頂けるかな？

さあ、残りの４つは分かりますか？大黒、福禄寿、毘沙門天、布袋と都七福神。

Last year, our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, made a 'Fuku-Fuku Tour' flier showcasing our local religious sites. 'Fuku' means 'luck' and the tour refers to the Shichifukujin (7 Lucky Gods)Meguri tours common throughout Japan.

Our town's tour hasn't been very popular, and I discussed the matter with my buddy Miyasaka-san, a travel publication producer experienced in promoting tourist areas to travellers. He kindly took me to Nagano City to see the Zenkoji version. Along with some websurfing, I ended learning a lot more about the 7 Gods of Luck than I had intended.

If you've spent any amount of time in Japan, you've likely come across the Shichifukujin. All 7 bear a slight resemblance to the Stay Puft Marshmallow man with their pudgy builds and jovial expressions. The various members have individual characteristics -- a lute player here, a conehead there, a guy carrying a red snapper over there, etc. You'll often see them riding a 'takara-bune' boat carrying treasures. They're a cosmopolitan bunch, originating from not only Japan but China and India as well. They also have various religious backgrounds including Buddhist, Shintoist and, likely enough, Taoist.

Perhaps the most well-known of the 7 gods of luck is Ebisu. If you've ever had a Japanese beer, you may have run into him as Sapporo makes a beer named 'Ebisu'. He's the guy holding the red snapper, and his picture is on the label.

I could go into detail about the 7 gods, including what each one represents, but a) there is a lot of good info already on the web -- just google "shichifukujin"; and b) I'm still learning myself.

Anyways, Japanese people supposedly have an affinity for the 7 gods of luck and tours involving the shichifukujin are popular. The Zenkoji version features a sort of stamp rally based on a collection of temples and shrines with images of the gods on their grounds. For example, pictured is a statue of Jurojin near the entrance of Karukayasan Temple.

If Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen can configure a walking tour based on the 7 gods of luck, we should be a bit more successful in interesting travellers to come.
