私も手伝って戸倉上山田温泉旅館青年部が飾った冬のイルミネーションはいつも綺麗ですが、雪景色になるとなお綺麗。
この頃は雪が少し降っていて、道は大丈夫ですが公園で残っています。イルミネーションと合わせて、幻景色。

長野県旅館青年部の会議＠下諏訪では、
CPAの井口秀昭先生が講師になって頂きました。現在の日本・世界の経済のマクロを語ってくれました。
あまり明るい話ではなかった。
今までは「今日より明日が明るい」
つまり、子供は親より良い生活を送れる
とのが常識だった。
これからは違う。
今の大学生は卒業したら仕事より借金が待っている。
「この不景気が終われば良いな」ではなくて、
この不景気・デフレの中でどうやって利益を出していくかが議題だと。
旅館青年部って懇親会（＝飲み会）ばかりというイメージがあるかもしれないけど、こういう真面目な勉強もしっかりやっています。
During this latest Nagano Ryokan Junior Association gathering in Shimo-Suwa, the keynote address talk was by CPA Hideaki Iguchi.
It wasn't a happy talk.
Iguchi-sensei explained that up until now, common wisdom taught that tomorrow will be brighter than today; that our children will have better lives than ours.
Not anymore. The poor economy and deflation are not only here to stay, but will keep getting worse. The important thing is to find a way to eek out a profit even in this worsening situation.
Our ryokan junior assocation has an image of partying and drinking. But as today's this talk shows, we do some heavy studying, too.
Gingetsu's open air bath, Shimo-Suwa Onsen
長野の温泉は色々と調査している中で、今回は下諏訪温泉。
下諏訪町観光協会によると、
「下諏訪町には２０カ所の源泉があり、毎分５１００リットルの温泉が湧き出ている...旅館やホテルなど３０軒があります。」
元々宿場町と諏訪大社の参拝関係で生まれた温泉街。兄弟の上諏訪温泉と比較したら家族経営な小さい宿が多く、住宅や商店と交われている落ち着いた雰囲気な温泉街。諏訪大社の前に揃っているようで、諏訪湖から約1.5km離れている位地。

湯質はナトリウムとカルシウムの成分が入っていて、透明無臭。微妙な塩っぽい味がする。大半はかけ流しだそうです。
足湯は４つ、公衆浴場は8ヶ所があります。日帰り入浴OKの旅館は７軒があり、「ほんわかゆうゆう券」を1000円で買えば2軒に入れる。「綿の湯」という伝説によると、下諏訪温泉は女神様の化粧水から出たそうです。その伝説を記念するモニュメントもある。
今回は私がお世話になった宿「ぎん月」のお風呂にしか入らなかった。きん月さんに鯉の池のある日本庭園の隣に立派な木造の小屋で男女別な露天風呂がありました。下諏訪温泉の代表的なお風呂だそうです。建物は風情があって、気持ち良かった。
本陣関係「聴泉閣亀」や、秋宮隣の雄大な「ホテル山王閣」と3.3㎞離れている毒沢鉱泉「神乃湯」（鉄分湯の秘湯）は次回に入ってみたいと思った。
そして、一つな入ってみたい公衆浴場があった：菅野温泉。大社通りトンネル状の通路を入って、木の温もりのある昭和レトロの入口は特徴。
中仙道趣散策、下諏訪大社の参拝、時計やオルゴール博物館、明治時代からのせんべい屋さんや羊羹屋さん、いい立ち寄りのお湯。亀清旅館・戸倉上山田温泉へのお出かけの途中で寄る場所としておすすめスポットの一つ。
Next up on my research of Nagano's many onsens is Shimo-Suwa.
Shimo-Suwa Onsen started out as the only post town on the old Nakasendo Road with a natural hot spring. The town further developed as a pilgrimage destination with its Suwa Grand Shrine's Akimiya and Harumiya (Fall and Spring shrines).
According to the local tourism association, 20 onsen wells pump out 5,100 liters of hot spring mineral water per minute, supplying the approx. 30 inns, 4 footbaths and 8 public baths. There is also a 'monument' dedicated to "Wata no Yu" legend about how the onsen was discovered by a goddess as she used the water for its beautifying properties.
Shimo-Suwa's inns are nestled around the entrance to the Grand Shrine Akimiya. They are mostly smaller, family-run inns and are interspersed amongst houses and shops making for a relaxed atmosphere. The location is about 1.5km up from Lake Suwa.
Shimo-Suwa's sister onsen, Kami-Suwa on the other side of Lake Suwa, on the other hand, is made up of mostly large-scale western style hotel-type ryokans lining the lake.
7 of the inns permit day use bathing. With the 1,000 yen 'Honwaka Yuyu' pass, you can use the baths at 2 different inns.
I only got to check out the onsen baths at the inn I stayed at, Gingetsu. That inn features an outdoor bath divided mens and womens in a beautiful traditional wood building next to their Japanese garden and koi pond. It's apparently one of the more representative baths for all of Shimo-Suwa.
Next time I want to check out a few other inns and one of the public baths.
Kameya is one of the more historical inns and is related to the original 'Honjin', the main inn from the Edo post town days.
Hotel Sannokaku is adjacent to the Grand Shrine Akimiya's parking lot and is accordingly grand is size and appearance.
In nearby Dokusawa Onsen (3.3 km away) is a "Hi-tou" (secret onsen). Kami no Yu's baths apparently feature orange colored mineral waters high in iron content.
And then there's a funky public bath, Sugeno Onsen. The entrance from Taisha-dori street is actually like a tunnel, and the actual entrance to the bath features warm wooden construction from Japan's Showa-era golden years. It's apparently well known for its quaint historical charm.
With its Nakasendo townscape, venerable Suwa Grand Shrine, the watch and piano box museums, and all these great spots for an onsen bath, Shimo-Suwa would make a great to stop on the way to Kamesei Ryokan and our from our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada.

八坂刀売神、
女神様の化粧水からうまれた綿の湯、
御神渡り、
等々、信州の下諏訪は神々の伝説が数えれないぐらい多い。
その神々が泊まるまちに私は初めて泊まりました。観光では何回観光来た事があったが、イマイチ下諏訪の「文化」が分からなかった。春宮・秋宮、七年に一度の御柱、一年前ぐらいから話題になった万治の石仏など部分的に知っていたが、実際に泊まってゆっくり体験しないと身に付かないところもある。
地元の諏訪の方々に案内や説明していただいてそして自ら歩いたり、見たり、食べたり、お湯に入ったりしたら下諏訪の「文化」が何となく分かってきました。
旧甲州道中と中仙道の合流点そして今まで残る街道の面影を持つ細い道を歩いて、
中仙道沿いの唯一の温泉、神の湯と言われているその下諏訪のナトリウム成分が高くて微妙に塩っぽい温泉に体を癒して、
御柱の参加者の深い想い、死より深い想いのお話を聞いて、
諏訪湖の御神渡りの話から始めて、湖はどうやって周辺に影響するか、そして耳が痛くするほどその自然の冷蔵庫の現象を実際感じて、
下諏訪の文化はこういうところからうまれているでしょう。
しかしまだまだある。オルゴールの技術、明治時代からの和菓子屋、トンネルの中の温泉銭湯、龍の口から流れる秋宮の御神湯、まだまだ沢山の文化がある。
神々が泊まるまち、泊まってみては？
The main goddess of the Shinto Suwa-sect, Yasakatomenokami, settled here.
The goddess Megumikami used the water here as her beauty water, resulting in the creation of a mineral water hotspring.
When the gods from the Upper Shrine cross Lake Suwa, they leave a path in the frozen lake surface.
Located on the northeastern bank of Lake Suwa, Nagano's largest lake, Shimo-Suwa originated as a post town on the old Nakasendo Road connecting Kyoto and Edo (old Tokyo). The Old Koshu-Dochu highway branches off from here and passes through Kofu City (neighboring Yamanashi Prefecture's capital) on an alternate route to Edo.
Besides its importance as an intersection of major Edo-era roads, Shimo-Suwa is also the home of two of the four Grand Shrines of the afore-mentioned Suwa sect of Shintoism. The other two Grand Shrines are located on the opposite side of Lake Suwa in Kami-Suwa. ('Shimo' means 'lower', 'Kami' means 'upper', pertaining to their respective positions in relation to Edo.) Hence it is a major pilgrimage destination.
More recently, Shimo-Suwa has gained distinction as a center of clockwork engineering. That heritage is made evident today by the Lake Suwa Clockwork, Science Museum 'Gishodo' with its large scale astronomical water-driven clock, and the Suwako Orgel Museum 'Somei-kan' for music boxes.
Edo era post town, the Grand Shrines, modern engineering -- that's Shimo-Suwa as seen from the outside. And that's the Shimo-Suwa I had known from my past, brief sightseeing trips there. But I'd always sensed that there was a lot more, a side that could only be understood by staying a night. So when the Nagano Ryokan Junior Association held a meeting there, I jumped at the opportunity to go and spend a night.
Seeing the Nakasendo neighborhood by lantern light at night and walking the storehouse-lined alleys in the early morning,
Enjoying the hospitality of the family-run inn and soaking in the the slightly salty waters of the onsen baths,
Hearing stories and seeing the pride of people who participate in the once every 7 years Onbashira festival, participation so death-defyingly passionate,
I feel I attained a deeper appreciation for Shimo-Suwa. But still, more remains. A 1-day watchmaking workshop, going to the public bath in the tunnel, drinking the steamy dragon water at the Akimiya shrine, and so much more.
That means I have to come back and stay again at Shimo-Suwa. Where the gods stay.

今日はネットエージェントじゃらん社の長野県のマネージャーとこの戸倉上山田の担当が亀清に来てくれて、私ともう一人の旅館青年部メンバーと打ち合わせしました。来月は私が青年部長として行われている研修・地域連携「温泉塾」という企画の一部として研修会をやる予定です。その下準備は今日、やりました。
それぞれの宿のプランつくりの事及び戸倉上山田温泉全体の特性の勉強になるので、楽しみにしています。

白人のカップルさんが自転車で上山田温泉を通っているのを見て、声をかけてみたら長野の新しく出来たプロバスケチーム（信州ブレイブウォリアズ；ホームタウン＝千曲市）の選手、Derekさんでした。
亀清のお風呂に誘って、入ってもらったので、上ったらロビーで千曲市の色々を説明しました。以前に書いた様に、この戸倉上山田温泉と千曲市の英語での情報は最近にうんと増えてきました。説明するに当たって、楽でした。
以前はLee選手とEdward選手と会って、千曲市の事を詳しく説明しました。今度は是非Tyler選手（私より大きい！）と新しいKyle選手（さらに大きい！）ともゆっくり話したいな。
この千曲市は段々と国際的になってきています。その基礎が出来て、良かった！
I saw a foreign couple ride through Kamiyamada Onsen on bikes and said 'hi' to them. It turned out to be Derek-san, one of the players on the Shinshu Brave Warriors, the new pro hoops team headquartered here in Chikuma City.
I invited them to a bath here at Kamesei Ryokan, and afterwards we chatted in our lobby. I filled them in on all the inside info about Togura Kamiyamada and the city as a whole, and gave them a collection of English language materials. As mentioned, that collection is steadily growing.
Before the basketball season started, two other players, Edward-san and Lee-san stopped by to get 'de-briefed' about the city. One of these days I'd like to sit down with the other two foreign players, Tyler-san (dude's even bigger than me) and Kyle-san (even taller yet!).
Chikuma City is becoming more and more international. I am happy to be involved in making it more English-friendly!
信州ブレイブウォリアズ Shinshu Brave Warriors
Harsh mountain fortress in a harsh winter
戸倉上山田の温泉画街から裏の城山の天辺に木造の櫓が見える： 荒砥城の見晴らし台です。1995年に復元されたこの山城は戦国時代を表現する。
松本城や姫路城は「日本のお城だ！」というイメージがあるかもしれないけど、ああいう平地城は戦国時代の後半もしくは江戸時代の方からのが多い。戦国時代の最中には下から上に何があるか分からないような作りのこういう山城の方が多かった。松本城の様な平地のお城は殿様の力を示す目的があった；荒砥城の様な山城は単純に戦争の為であった。
戦争やら火事やら、もしくは単純の浸食で戦国時代の山城の全部は無くなりました。唯一元の形として存在しているのはこの荒砥城です。従って、荒砥城は太河ドラマのロケ地として使われています。
今回はお客さんに頼まれて、荒砥城を案内しました。冬に登ったのは初めてだったかもしれない；
いつも格好良い荒砥城は雪景色でなお良い絵になっています、
上から見る千曲川と周辺の山々は白くなっていて、なお綺麗でした。
お客さんは「そのころの侍は冬をどうやって越したか」とか、「その時代に一日だけでもいいから戻ってみたい」とかで話が盛り上がりました。
荒砥城はいつもお客さんに紹介しますが、自分も時々行けて良いね。
From down in our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, you can see a wooden lookout tower at the top of Jo-Yama, the hill behind our town. The tower belongs to Arato-jo, a mountain fortress. The compound was rebuilt to match its presumed original configuration in 1995.
Most people typically picture a lowland castle like Matsumoto's or Himeji's when they think of a 'Japanese castle'. Those are more projections of the local lord's power than actual defensive battlements. They date back to the end of the Warring States as well as Edo eras.
During the Warring States era, however, thousands of fortresses like Arato-Jo were constructed on hilltops throughout the country. They were designed strictly for military purposes, with the majority of their structures built low to the ground so as not to be visible from down below.
All of these mountain fortresses have since disappeared, destroyed by fires, battles or simple erosion. Arato-jo is hence the only such fortress existing in a resemblance of it's original shape, and is often used as the backdrop for historical TV shows.
I took a couple of guests up to Arato-jo for a tour. This was my first time to go in the middle of winter. With a touch of snow, the fortress has an even more foreboding feel to it. The view from the top, with the Chikuma River valley below and the surrounding mountains in their winter state, had a surreal feel to it.
The guests and I wondered how it must have been like for the samurai posted here in the winter. One whistfully fantasized about returning to that era and experiencing how it would've been like to live a samurai's life for a day.
Down here at Kamesei, our guests often follow our recommendation and drive or walk up to see Arato-jo. This time I was fortunate to see the fort with my own eyes, in its harsh winter guise.
Kamiyamada's Apple Wood -- Tougher than the Toughest Axe
薪ストーブのうんちくですが、薪としてはりんごの木が一番いいとよく言われます。
松とか杉は良く出るけど、直ぐ燃えっちゃうし脂があるから煙突が詰まる。
楢が本来なら火が長持ちで一番良いけど、あまり手に入らない。
アカシアはこの辺で時々出ます。国が千曲川沿いのを定期的に切って、提供してくれるから。日持ちは良いけど、付きにくいのでストーブが良く燃えてからじゃないと駄目。バラ科の為に針もある悪い面、比較的に割りやすい。
杏はとにかく固くて切り辛い。
りんごの木は周辺の農園が剪定する時に出ます。昔は皆がその剪定物を墨にして、炬燵に使っていたようです。現在は炬燵に墨を使う人がほとんどなくて、りんご農園の皆は剪定物が余っていてが困っている。私達薪ストーブの皆が取りに行くので、お互いに助かります。
薪としてりんごの木は日持ちがそこそこ良いし、火を付ける時から使える。甘い香りも何となくする。
との事で、私ども薪ストーブを持っている皆には好まれています。
ただし、問題は真っ直ぐなりんごの木はまずない。割るのに大変です。
どれだけ固くて、割りにくいか良く分かってきた。以前は木造柄のは何本かが壊れちゃって最強の斧、グラスファイバー柄の「Tomahawk」を買いました。しかし、それもついに割れました。

まあ、薪集めで苦労しているけど亀清旅館のロビーにある薪ストーブを楽しまれているお客様の姿を見れば、その苦労の分の価値があるように感じます。
Today, a little bit of firewood trivia for you.
Wood from oak trees is the most highly prized because it burns so nice and long. However, it is hard to come by.
Pine and cedar logs are much more readily available, but their wood burns so quickly and the sap tends to plug up the chimney.
Acacia trees grow like weeds along the banks of the Chikuma River. The government regularly cuts them down and offers the wood for free. It burns long but on the other hand is difficult to start burning. It splits well but has thorns (it's part of the rose family).
Apricot tree wood is so hard it's difficult to cut.
Which makes apple tree wood the most popular with us wood stove owners in Nagano. It burns fairly long and takes well to flame. It even gives off a bit of a sweet scent.
The many apple orchardists around trim their trees in the winter. In the past, people used to take the trimmings and make charcoal to use in their 'kotatsu' (tables with a heating element on the underside). Nowadays, most kotatsu are electric so the orchardists tend to get stuck with lots of wood to dispose of. Us wood stove guys are more than happy to take it off their hands. It's a perfect symbiotic relationship.
The one downside is apple trees never grow straight. All their twisting and branching makes them difficult to split. I've gone through several wood-handled axes trying to split apple tree wood. So last year I bought a fancy new-fangled fiberglass handle "Tomahawk" ax. But just the other day, it's handle, too, cracked.

All the hard work chopping wood is worth it, though.
Bean Throwing (and Catching) for Setsubun

節分が近付いているとの事！
皆さんの町で豆撒きはどこでなされているか分かりませんが、この戸倉上山田温泉では温泉街の上の善光寺別院のお寺さんで行われています。
戸倉上山田温泉の豆撒き及び冬・早春のイベントを紹介します；
節分（豆撒き）＠善光寺大本願別院 2月3日（金）
年男や芸子さん、政治家がお寺の裏の駐車場で豆をまきます。（亀清旅館から歩いて25分）
灯明祭（ライトアップ） ＠善光寺・長野市 2月11-19日
善光寺は五輪の色でライトアップされ、参道が行燈通りになる。（亀清から車で約60分；電車は戸倉―長野駅間25分）
節分草（花） ＠戸倉駅の上の天狗公園 ３月中旬～下旬
可愛いらしい小さな白い花の真中に黄色と紫のカラフルな部分があって、うんと綺麗です。この珍しい花は写真家に人気あります。戸倉節分草を育てる会が一所懸命守っていますので年々に見に来る方が増えています。

森「杏の里」のあんず祭 ４月３日～１５日
今年で５７回目になる千曲市の大イベントです。杏の花の薄いピンクに、農村の落ち着いた雰囲気の合わせがポイントです。戸倉駅の上に登る道が秘密の近道です。
（亀清旅館から車で約２５分。屋代駅からシャットルバスで１０分。）
イースターフェスティバルin戸倉上イやまだ温泉 ４月７日（予定）
千曲国際交流協会の提供で、子供達の為のイベントです。千曲川沿いの噴水公園の周辺でお菓子入りのプラスチック玉子が隠されて、子供たちがガーっと探すと言う遊びです。他のゲームもあります。馬車も来る予定です！これはまた、実行委員長が私です。詳しくは私まで@亀清でお電話をどうぞ。
上山田の知識寺の春祭り ４月１７日（火）
地元のお寺さんの地元の、伝統的な式。お寺は茅葺屋根との歴史的な建物で、この儀式こそ昔からです。

Grocery stores throughout the country are prominently displaying beans for sale.
Beans packaged with 'oni' goblin masks.
'Tis tims for Setsubun, the 'season-between-the-seasons', or the day in between the winter solstice and spring equinox. What this entails is a bean-throwing ceremony where people shout 'Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi' which basically means "Bad luck out, good luck in".
Households as well as communities around the country hold such ceremonies. Here in our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, the temple at the top of the hill behind town, the Zenkoji Branch Temple, holds our area's biggest bean throwing. All the men of an age a multiple of 12, as well as some of the geisha and a few politicians stand on the balcony and throw beans mixed with prizes to the people gathered below.
Info on that as well as other events coming up for the Togura-Kamiyamada area are as follows.
Setsubun @ Zenkoji Branch Temple, Feb. 3 (Fri.)
Flying beans and presents. Temple is a 25 min. walk up the hill behind Kamesei Ryokan.
Tomyo Festival @ Zenkoji (Nagano City) Feb. 11-19
Nagano City's venerable Zenkoji Temple lit up in the Olympic colors. The cobblestone street main approach is also decorated with hundreds of andon lanterns.
From Kamesei by car 60 minutes, or by train 25 min. from Togura Station to Nagano Station.
Setsubunsou Flowers (Togura Tengu Park) Mid to Late March
The cutest little white wildflowers, with pretty yellow and purple centers, bloom in a section of the hillside next to Tengu Park above Togura Station. They bloom after the snow cover melts, and attract many an avid photographer.
10 minutes by car from Kamesei Ryokan, 10 minutes on foot from Togura Station.
Apricot Blossoms, Mori "Apricot Vilage" Early to Mid April
This year's Apricot Blossom Festival will be held from April 3rd to the 15th in quaint, rural Mori. One of Chikuma City's signature events. The delicate light pink color of the apricot blossoms are spread out among the farmhouses in this rural valley.
25 minutes by car from Kamesei / Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, or 10 minutes by shuttle bus from Yashiro Station.
Easter Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, April 7th (tentative)
Me and some fellow foreigners share our culture with the local children, with a huge, 1000-egg Easter egg hunt at the Fountain Park along the Chikuma River here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Egg-related games and free horse buggy rides.
Chishiki-ji Temple's Spring Festival 4/17
A decidedly local traditional festival at a decidedly local temple. Absolutely 100% not touristy. Which makes it absolutetly 100% interesting for tourists from overseas, because it is a glimpse at local culture in rural Japan. I'll be there playing my flute with my fellow members of the Kamiyamada Lion Dance group.

外はまだまだ寒い；
雪はまだまだ降る。
しかし、來冬の為に薪はもう集めないと駄目です。割って薪小屋に積んで、一夏を通せばいい薪になる。
今回はお神楽の仲間が太いりんごの木を切ってその薪を下さりました。上山田の上の方、八坂神社で頂に行きました。
このお蔭で亀清旅館のお客様がロビーにる薪ストーブのやわらかい温かさを楽しんで頂けます。
It's still brutally cold out,
and the snow is still falling.
But I'm already thinking of next winter. This is the time of year we gather firewood, cut it and stack it, let it dry over the summer. Then it will be ready for use in our lobby's wood burning stove next winter.
