亀清旅館のお風呂場のシャワーは一年半前に8台とも節水シャワーに取り返ました。ボタンを押せば、シャワーが30秒ぐらい出てから自動的に止まるというやつ。高かったけど、シャワーの流しっぱなし問題を防げて、節水になって環境にもよいとの事で、「進化した」と思いました。
が、上山田の温泉成分が強いか、シャワーは2台が止まらなくなってしまいました。管財やさんと相談したら、シャワー本体の部分の交換は無く、普通（節水じゃない）シャワーは1万円台という手ごろの値段だし、新品はピカピカで綺麗だし、取り変え様に言われた。
確かに、節水タイプは3万円ぐらいするのでいくら節水しても2万円分の節水はないだろうし、一年半前に買ったシャワーは温泉の成分でもう黒くなったし、取り返った方が良いか…
しかし、せっかく進化したから戻るのは嫌！シャワーを分解してみて、自動的に泊まる部分を把握して、その部品を管財屋さんに取り寄せしてもらった。2500円ぐらいしたけど、取り付けてみたらシャワーが直りました！
という事で、亀清のお風呂場の蛇口は見かけが良くない（温泉の成分のせいで黒くなっているから）けど、中身がしっかり節水になっている。
（今度はお風呂場の照明器具が調子悪くなった。一歩進んで、一歩…）
A year and a half ago, we changed out all of the shower faucets at Kamesei Ryokan's onsen baths to ones that stop automatically. Every once in a while, the showers were left running, wasting water. So in the name of water conservation, we bought all new, rather expensive faucets.
I was pretty proud of this small but important bit of progress.
Lately, though, a couple of the faucets stopped stopping. Apparently the onsen water's high mineral content seeped into the faucet and gummed things up.
When I consulted with the plumbing supply people, they suggested switching back to regular faucets. New ones are 1/3 the price of the cost of the automatic stopping ones, and would have a sparkling new appearance. The current ones have already turned black thanks to the onsen's minerals.
No matter how much water the automatic-stopping ones conserve, they would never save enough money to cover the difference in cost of the faucets. And new ones would look much better. Hmmm.
But, no! We made this step of progress and I don't want to go back! So I took another look at the faucets and disassembled one to figure out the part the does the automatic stopping. I had the supply store order the proper part. After it came, I tried installing it and, voila! The faucet stops automatically again.
So Kamesei's showers may not have a shiny appearance, but internally they are perfectly sound.
(Next dilemma: the bath's lighting fixtures are on the fritz...)

亀清旅館のロビーにこの木目ヤマハU1Fのピアノがあります。私と同じ1970年生まれ。
先日は地元の調律師が来て、年一回のチューニングしてもらった。「42歳のピアノとして調子が良いね。さすがヤマハだ」と言ってくれました。ロビーが広いため気圧や温度の変更は激しくないお蔭でピアノに負担が掛けられていないそうです。
この間、あるホテル式旅館へ行ったらそのロビーにグランドピアノが置いてあった。良く見たら、注意書きがあった:「触らないでください」と。
亀清のピアノにも注意書きを付けたいと思った：「触って下さい」と。当然、お客様がピアノを弾きながら楽しんで頂けるためにおいてある。うちの息子達がピアノを練習しているので、随時にロビーにピアノを弾いています。
ピアノは飾りじゃなくて、弾く為の物だと思っています。
実は、私の以前の人生でアメリカでこういう古い日本製ピアノの販売をしていました。シアトルで務めていた貿易会社が日本から輸入をして、アメリカのピアノ店に売っていました。
日本は30~40年前に娘の為にピアノを買った家族が沢山ある。あれから娘が大きくなって家から出て、ピアノがそのまま眠っているケースが多い。狭い家で大きいピアノが邪魔で、結局は業者に売る。
アメリカはピアノを買いたい方にとって、最新のプラスチック部品だらけ中国産のか、品質の高い日本の中古のか、同じ値段ならヤマハとか河合を選ぶ方が多い。亀清のロビーにあるような木目ピアノは特に人気がある。
でも、売らない。亀清のピアノは眠っていない。我が息子達が使って練習しているし、お客様もお弾きになっています。

Here in Kamesei Ryokan's lobby we have a wood-finish Yamaha U1F piano. It was made in 1970 (same year as I was born!).
Our local piano tuner came and worked his annual magic on our piano. "For a forty year-old piano, it's in great shape. Of course, it's a Yamaha." Apparently our lobby is spacious enough so that the piano doesn't suffer extreme temperature or air pressure fluctuations which helps keep it in good condition.
Recently I visited another inn with a grand piano in the lobby. The piano had a little sign on it, "Please do not touch."
It made me want to put a similar sign on our piano here at Kamesei; "Please touch."
What's a piano for if it's not to be played? We are happy to have our guests sit down and play our piano. Our two sons are taking lessons and often use the piano for their practice. So it gets used quite a bit.
Actually, in my previous life, I used to sell old Japanese pianos like this in the States. The trading company I worked for back in Seattle imported containers of used pianos and sold them to piano dealers throughout North America.
In Japan, it's a common occurrence for a family to have purchased a piano for their daughter 30~40 years ago only to have the daughter grow up and move out. So the large piano is stuck taking up space and collecting dust in the family's small living room. Exporters then buy them up and ship them overseas.
In the States, a person looking at buying a piano has a choice of a brand new one made in China and full of plastic parts, or a used one from Japan with real wooden parts and the finest craftsmanship. With both being around the same price, many choose a used Yamaha or Kawai. Wood-finished ones like the one in our lobby are especially popular. But you won't find ours being sold and shipped overseas. It's getting a lot of use right here in our lobby.

Shioda Plain and the 13-meter tall Torii
長野県は本当に山の国です。人が住める平らな場所がかなり限られている。千曲川や犀川、木曽川などで作られた谷ぐらいしかない。東信の上田市の中心はそうやって千曲川の周辺ですが、その西側に珍しく平らな場所がある:塩田平。
塩田平が住宅や畑、大学、シッピングモールなどがあって、つまり、現代的な街に見える。しかし、その表面の下は長い歴史がある。
塩田平の西側に1000年以上前からあった別所温泉がある。鎌倉時代に信州の首都だった。「信州の鎌倉」と呼ばれて、そのころから国宝八角三重塔を有する安楽寺や、善光寺に向かっている北向観音等のお寺さんが特殊。
北側は戦国時代の上田が原合戦を記念する上田古戦場公園がある。
南側に806年から歴史が続いてきた生島足島神社がある。位置的に日本のおへそだと言われて、日本全体を守る神の神社である。
この寒い冬の日に塩田平を訪ねました。ある細い道をはしていたら、高さ13メーターの鳥居を見かけました。色で分かったけど、生島足島神社の鳥居です。塩田平と周辺の山々の背景とこの巨大の鳥居の写真をお送りします。塩田平のシンボルだと思った。
Nagano's geography is dominated by mountains -- lots of them. There's hardly any flat places where people can build proper place to live. The towns are mostly gathered along the few river valleys, like those of the Chikuma, Sai and Kiso rivers.
To the west of the city of Ueda, however, is a relatively wide, flat spot away from the city's center that's down by the banks of the Chikuma River. This area is called the Shioda Plain. It is filled with houses, rice fields, orchards, a couple of universities, a shopping mall.
All in all a very modern facade. If you dig a bit deeper though, you'll realize the Shioda Plain has a very, very deep history.
On the western edge is an onsen, Bessho, that's been around for over 1000 years. Back in the Kamakura era, it hosted the prefecture's capital. Several major temples were built at that time, including Anraku-ji which features a 3-story pagoda that is on the national historical registry, and Kitamuki ('north-facing') Kannon which is lined up with the south-facing Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. These temples have earned Bessho the nickname 'Little Kamakura'.
On the north side of the Shioda Plain is a marker designating the location of the Uedagahara Gassen, one of the major regional battles during the Warring States era.
And on the south side is Ikushima Tarushima Shrine, which dates back to the year 806. The distinctly vermillion-colored shrine claims to be at the geographic center of Japan and houses the kami ('god') that protects the entire country.
I recently made another trip to the area, and came across a 13-meter tall torii gate. Judging by its color, I knew it was related to the Ikushima Tarushima Shrine. The gigantic gate with the plain spreading out in the distance surrounded by all of those mountains really seemed to symbolize the Shioda Plain.

上山田の節分豆まき祭の為に、城山を登って上にある善光寺別院に行きました。ついでに、道挟んで向こう側にある旧歴史館に行ってみました。建物の横にいくつかの像がある。石のも、銅像も。その銅像は特に不思議です。何と第二次世界大戦のマッカーサーやChiang Kai Shek(蒋介石)。この戸倉上山田温泉にマッカーサーの銅像？！ 尚且つ、いつものサングラスをかけていて。不思議でしょうがない。
Kamesei's Guide Post Made the Magazine
長野市タウン誌「プースカフェ―」の2月号は上山田温泉の特集です。温泉街の色々な写真の中で亀清旅館の玄関にある看板も写っていました。
2年前にお客さんに駐車場の位置を案内する為に私がこの看板を作りました。ついでに遊び心で善光寺や松本城、カラコロ足湯等色んな行先（シアトルも！）のミニ看板も作りました。この看板が雑誌のカメラマンの目を引いて、嬉しい！
こうやって戸倉上山田温泉ををさらに賑やかにするのに一生懸命です。また一つな目玉が出来て、良かった！
この代わった看板が亀清の玄関にありますので、良かったら見に来てください。
One of Nagano City's free magazines, "Pousse Cafe" features Kamiyamada Onsen for their February issue. Among their photo collage is a picture of Kamesei's funky guide post.
I built this sign 2 years ago, initially to point out our carpark location to guests. Rather than stopping there, I added mini-signs for Matsumoto Castle, our local footbath, etc., etc. (even Seattle!). I'm glad this caught the eye of the magazine's photographer.
This sign is just one of my efforts to help enliven our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. I'm glad it's having a positive effect.
Easter Egg Fun
イースターエッグフェスティバルin戸倉上山田2012年は4月7日（土）に行う予定になりました。今年は何と第7回目。（私の長野での7つ目の春との事！）
この子供たちの為のイベントは少しずつ定着してきている。千曲国際交流協会が主催して、欧米文化の中で春を代表するイベントを地元の子供達とシェアーしながら、戸倉上山田温泉・千曲川の良さと触れ合う事が目的。
去年は100数人のお子さん達が参加して、今年はさらに賑やかにしたいと思っています。地元の子供達だけではなく、観光客の参加も目指します。
当日の内容は：

The 2012 date for the Easter Egg Festival in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has been set for Saturday April 7th. This is the 7th annual festival (which means I've been in Nagano for 7 springs?!).
The festival is run by the Chikuma Int'l Exchange Association (with yours, truly as the event organizing chairperson). Every year it gets a bit more popular, with 100+ local kids participating last year. It's a chance to share one of the major springtime customs from the West with the children here, as well as a way of adding excitement to our onsen town.
Details of the event are as follows:
Location: the fountain park alongside the Chikuma River in front of Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen
Reception starts at 10:00, event starts at 10:30.
Following the Easter Egg Hunt will be several egg-related games (egg toss, spoon relay, New bunny hop, scrambled egg game) as well as egg coloring and face painting. Horse Buggy rides will also be available, and all participants will receive a pass for a free onsen bath at one of our town's many onsen inns.

Not just futon flipping
旅館の若旦那のよくある仕事はお客さんの出迎え、町興し会議の参加、場合によっては布団引き、まあ、私の場合は露天風呂造りも。
しかし、見えない所で仕事が沢山ある。最近は私が設備屋さんの仕事が多い。
小さい方の内風呂の壁タイルは温泉のせいか、タイルとタイルの間の目地が段々と溶けて来ています。その目地塗り直しを実践しました。
そして、50年以上前からあった下水配管の調子が悪かった。素人じゃできないからいつもお世話になっている設備屋さんを呼んで配管の位置を探しました。一緒に穴を掘って配管を追いかけた。
この頃は会議と会議の間にこうやって設備の仕事をしています。まあ、プロから見れば味見程度でしょうけど、設備屋さんの仕事も面白そうと思った。
What type of work does an inn's proprietor like me do? Well, there's greeting the guests and attending all the ryokan association and other meetings for civic improvement. And depending on the innkeeper, there's flipping the futons and, in extreme cases like mine, constructing new outdoor baths.
There's a lot of behind-the-scenes work, too. Lately I've been doing a lot of plumbing-related jobs, like regrouting the wall tiles in one of our onsen baths. Apparently the mist from the hot spring mineral baths has a tendance to melt away the grout.
Then there's our 50+ year old sewar pipe that's been acting strange lately. We called in our regular plumbers to track down the pipe's location. I helped out digging holes to try to find the pipe. Everything's back in good shape now.
Even though from a pro's perspective my recent plumbing work is just dabbling in things, it certainly gave me a taste of what plumbers do. And it gave me an appreciation for their work!
