亀清旅館の客室「松風」は「紬」というテーマで少しずつ帰っています。お庭はお蚕さんを表現する白い花が沢山あるし、お蚕さんが食べる桑の木もある。ちょうど今は色んな珍しい花が咲いています。庭師の岡田さんに来てもらって、説明してくれました。
Our gardener Okada-san stopped by to explain the flowers blooming in the garden he built for our guestroom "Matsukaze". The garden's theme is "Tsumugi" (silk weaving) and features plants with white flowers (like coccoons) as well as a mulberry shrub. Now I can explain to our guests the names of the various flowers!

As head of our local Togura Kamiyamada Ryokan Junior Association, I am automatically instated as a member of the board of directors for the Chikuma City Tourism Association. Today was the first time for me to attend the Association's annual meeting. Even the mayor was there -- very rarified air indeed. As I live here, more and more responsibilities will come my way. I need to learn as much as possible from those above me!

Artfully flipped futons

並び方、向き、照明の光、お客様の顔を見ながら色々と計算して布団引きは毎日やっております。（一番難しいのは布団と布団の間の幅はどれだけ空くか）
６年半の経験で、それなり上手になってきたとの事でしょうかね。布団の文化じゃないアメリカから来た者で「布団引きが芸術的だ」と言われたら、ちょっと嬉しいですね。
In a recent review we received from a guest, there was a compliment about my futon flipping skills:
'The Proprietor's Futon Flipping Was Artistic.'
While keeping in mind the particulars about each guest, I am always careful about how I arrange the futons, which direction they face, even the lighting in the room. The most difficult part is always figuring out how much space to put between the futons for couples. 🙂
I've been flipping futons every day now for 6-1/2 years. All of that experience must be paying off. Coming from America where we we have beds instead, I was thrilled to hear my futon flipping skills are getting so artful.
フラットヘッドって知っていますか？戸倉の会社でアメリカンカジュアルのジーパンを作っている会社。元々は独自でアメリカから古着を輸入してここで売っていましたが、センスと品質の評判が良くて、自分のブランドを作りだしました。ファンが段々と増えて、芸能人も買っているそうです。社長はクラシックの車も集まっている。その二つを合わせて、毎年は長野市にあるM-Waveを貸切してスーパーウィークエンドを開催しています。
2012年のSuper Weekendは9月1日（土）・2日（日）の予定です。フラットヘッドのアメカジ服と色んな店の雑貨・おもちゃ、アメリカンファニチャー等などのフリーマーケットと、
２００台のモーターショー、そしてハンバーガーあ等のフードフェスタ―そしてクラシックロックのライブなどのインターテインメント。
今年で７年目。以前は行きましたが、アメリカの６０～７０年代のファンの天国でした。
実は今回、フラットヘッドの本社に顔を出してみました。今は戸倉上山田の通販カタログをいう企画に手伝っています。フラットヘッドのジーパンや帽子はどうかと思って、話してみました。そうすると、「お客さんの顔を見てからじゃないと売らない;通販ではなくてお店のみ」と断りました。
その拘りはえらい！
なおかつ、断るだけじゃなくて、子会社のヨーグルトジェラートの工房の商品をその通販カタログの為に紹介してくれました。なかなか良い結果が出ました。
との事で、Super Weekendは楽しみ！
Togura is home to an 'American Casual' clothing maker called The Flat Head. Besides making classic jeans and t-shirts, the owner also has a huge classic car collection. Every year, they rent out the entire M-Wave hall in Nagano City and put on an event called "Super Weekend".
Super Weekend 2012 will take place on September 1st and 2nd. This will be the 7th annual event, and will feature a flea market (including Flat Head merchandise) and a motor show. There will be food booths and live entertainment as well.
Actually, I stopped by the Flat Head main office to ask them about participating in the Togura-Kamiyamada catalog I am assisting with. They declined, saying their jeans and t-shirts are only sold at their stores where customers can physically see and try on the merchandise. However, one of their subsidiaries makes yoghurt gelatto, and we will try incorporating that into the catalog.
I really applaud Flat Head's efforts!

長野県の５ヵ所が共同で東京にて５つの旅行会社との商談会が行われました。戸倉上山田温泉が選ばれた事と、その説明するのに私が呼ばれたとの事、嬉しかったです。
色んな説明を聞いた中で感じたのは戸倉上山田の位置が中心的でちょうど良い。一時間前後で善光寺、戸隠、小布施、上田城、軽井沢、美ヶ原、安曇野、松本、等など。
なおかつ、温泉のお湯も良いし！
との事を、旅行会社にPRしてきました！
5 areas from Nagano Prefecture were invited to give a sales presentation to travel agents in Tokyo. Not only was I delighted that Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen was one of the chosen 5, but I was asked to give the presentation.
One thing that came out of the sales talk was how convenient our onsen town is location-wise. So many sightseeing spots just an hour or so away: the esteemed Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, the spiritual mountains, supreme soba noodles and hidden ninjas of Togakushi, shopping and resort paradise of Karuizawa, the snow monkeys of Jigokudani, the cool castle town of Matsumoto, and so much more.
Hopefully I successfully promoted this to the travel agents!
Seisen Students Visiting Kamesei
千曲市と清泉女学院（長野市）が連携・交流の場面を作ろうとしています。その中で、学生の旅館でのインターン、特に英語を習っている生徒が海外のお客さんが割と多い亀清旅館でのインターンを調整している。先日は女子学生二十数人が我が亀清旅館を見学しました。
学生に今までの工夫を見せたり、仕事の内容を説明したりしました。最後はお風呂に実際に入って頂きました。
是非、学生のパワーを取組みたいと思っています。この学生の将来は楽しみだね。亀清旅館が応援しています！
Chikuma City is looking to start a program in conjunction with the Seisen Womens College in Nagano City. For example, set up an internship program with the inns here at our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada. The English students in particular would benefit from a working experience at Kamesei Rokan as we often have English-speaking guests from overseas.
Today, about 2 dozen students came and took a tour of our inn. Some even took a bath.
Hopefully we here at Kamesei can help the students with their educational development!

FM長野はまたこの年度、「千曲市浪漫紀行 スイッチバック姨捨」という番組を毎週木曜日12:00-12:49にOn Airします。
今度の5月24日の番組のテーマはサイクリングです。そして、戸倉上山田温泉のレンタサイクルの担当でいる私がゲストになる予定です。その下見の為に、リポーター池田さんとディレクター藤原さんと温泉街を自転車で回りました。
コースは去年に千曲サイクリングクラブと一緒に作った千曲市のサイクリングマップで紹介されている温泉街のコースでした。カラコロ足湯から出発して、途中で寄ったのは：

内の5歳の美咲ちゃんも一緒にサイクリングした。あちらこちらよりながら、2時間かかりました。ちょうどいいコース。ほとんど坂がないし、山辺と川辺の風が気持ちいいし。
当日の番組はどうなるか、楽しみだね。
FM Nagano is once again producing a once-a-week program on Chikuma City every Thursday during the lunch hour. The themd for this upcoming program, Thursday May 24th, is cycling. The special guest will be the guy behind the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen rental cycles -- Me!
Reporter Ikeda-san and Director Fujiwara-san rode with me around the course for a test run. We followed the Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen course featured in the new Chikuma City Hiking / Cycling Map that I made with the assistance of the Chikuma Cycling Club last year.
I don't know how things will turn out for this Thursday's program, but I'm looking forward to it!

笑顔と１００年前の機織り機。
笑顔はオーストラリアからの高校生、Briannaさん。学校の成績が良くて、お祝いでお父さんが日本旅に連れてきました。
１００年の機織り機は小岩井紬工房の機械。日本三大紬の一つ、上田紬を作っている数百年の歴史の工房。現在の若手職人との姉妹がその伝統的な技術で昔と同じく着物の着尺や帯はもちろん作っているけど、現代的な商品「携帯ストラップ」や現代な織り（銅の糸！）も実践しています。
体験は２５００円（コースター、約３０分）から出来ます。私もやったことがあり、とっても大思い出になる。

A smiley face and a 100 year old loom.
The smile belongs to Brianna, a highschool student from Australia. Her dad brought her to Japan as a reward for her good grades.
The loom is in the silk weaving workshop of Koiwai Tsumugi Kobo in nearby Ueda City. The local style of silk weaving ("Ueda Tsumugi") is considered to be one of the top 3 traditions in all of Japan. The current generation of the Koiwai family is continuing the business that dates back several hundred years, using the age-old techniques to make kimono fabric as they always have. But they are are also introducing new products (cell phone straps) and using their weaving techniques for high-tech purposes (weaving copper wire into mats for electrical grounding for a local factory).
At the Koiwai Silk Weaving Workshop, you too can sit at one of the 100 year-old looms and weave your own silk creation. Sessions start at 2,500 yen for a coaster (takes approx. 30 mins.) I myself made a wall hanging for one of our guest rooms. It was a very memorable experience.
One that the smile on Brianna's face can attest to.

長野県は日本の中で平均年齢が長い方。その理由は何か、色んな調査がある中で可能性としては発酵食品。信州味噌、日本酒・酒粕、漬物など。我々長野県旅館青年部がその３つ（味噌、酒粕、野沢菜などの漬物）の組み合わせのソースを開発しています。長野県の表現で「とっても」とか「本当に」の意味で「まぁーず」とよく言います。この新しいソースはそのまま、「まぁーず」という名前。
亀清旅館のChef武井ももちろん、オリジナルのまぁーず一品を出しています。最近はばら肉の土手焼きです。
まぁーずを最初に出したのは田沢温泉の若旦那、宮原さん。先日の県旅館青年部の会議が宮原さんのますや旅館で行われた。その時に、宮原さんなりのまぁーずの紹介があった。
写真の様に、色んな作り方がある。
右下: スタンダードまぁーず。
右上： 舞茸まぁーず
左上： ゆず胡椒
左下: らぁーず （まぁーず+ラー油）
中信: ホワイトソースまぁーず（洋風）
個人的に、舞茸まぁーずが一番気に入った。
これからのまぁーずの発展は楽しみやな！
Japan has one of the longest life expectancy rate in the world. Within Japan, Nagano's is especially long. There's been a lot of research on this matter, and one conclusion is that perhaps it's because people in Nagano eat a lot of fermented food, like miso, sake and sake lees, and pickled vegetables. The ryokan junior association has taken those 3 and combined them for a new sauce dubbed 'Mahz'.
Our chef here at Kamesei Ryokan of course uses Mahz for one of his dishes (currently Mahz over marbled beef). But the originator of Mahz and the undisputed Mahz master is Miyahara-san, the proprietor of Masuya Ryokan in Tazawa Onsen.
At our recent junior innkeeper association gathering there, Miyahara-san treated us to a sampling of Mahz. As per the picture,
Bottom right -- standard Mahz
Top right -- Mahz with maitake mushrooms
Top left -- Mahz with yuzu (lime) pepper
Bottom left -- Rahz (Mahz with Rayu spiced oil)
Center -- Mahz with white sauce (a western version)
My favorite was the Maitake Mahz.
It will be fun to see how the Mahz sauce develops from here.
Historical Masuya Ryokan, Tazawa Onsen
旅館組合の会議のほとんどは割とドライな場所で行われる：観光会館の多目的スペースとかバスセンターの会議室など。
今回の県旅館青年部の会議場所は藤村の部屋でした。
田沢温泉の江戸時代からの３階木造宿「ますや旅館」でした。作家の藤村が滞在して、本を書いたと言う。その滞在したお部屋が今回の会議室となりました。歴史を感じながら。旅館青年部じゃないとなかなか経験できない。
ちなみに、今回の会議の後の講演会でマックアースグループの若社長、一ノ本さんのお話を聞けました。兵庫県を中心で全国でホテルを買ったり（学校団体受け入り日本１）、スキー場（１６ヵ所も！）経営したり、凄い結果を出しています。いつも「売り上げを伸ばすのが大事だ」と言われている、社長の経験は逆に「これだけの費用ならこんな売り上げが必要」と、逆計算の発想。彼の勢いに感心しました。
それこそ、旅館青年部じゃないと経験できない貴重なお話しでした。
Most ryokan association meetings take place in boring community centers or meeting rooms. This time, our Nagano Junior Association met in a room used by Toson Shimozaki, a literary master from the Meiji and early Showa eras. The room is in Masuya Ryokan, a 3-story wood inn built in the Meiji era. It was a humbling experience attending a meeting in such a historical place.
After the meeting was a speech by the young president of Mac-Earth Corp. Ichinomoto-san single-handedly built his organization up from a mom&pop inn to a group covering over a dozen hotels and 16 ski resorts. His intensity was amazing. I had always been told to focus on sales figures. His policy is to look at your costs, and target sales high enough to cover those costs, hence his aggressive expansion.
Holding a meeting in a historical, turn of the (last) century room, getting to meet one of the most successful resort operators in Japan -- these are some of the benefits of becoming an innkeeper!
