先日は市役所の主催で農家・加工業者・旅館の交流会がありました。旬な菜さんの宿で提供するおやきは正にそんなコラボです。

1日の夜に千曲市の役場の主催で農家・加工業者・旅館の交流会が行われました。
千曲市の農家さん達はどういう作物を育っているか、
加工業者はどんな食品を作っているか、
そして私達旅館側がお料理でどういう取り組みが出来るか、
初めての話し合いでした。

これからはこういう情報交換・交流会が継続となりますので、我が亀清旅館が既に地元の食材を多く使っていますが、更に使える道が出てくればいいと思っています。

今回は一番思ったのがお料理もそうですけど、観光客と農家の連携も取れば良いと。
蕎麦と玉ねぎ植え付きや収穫体験が既にあります。一度、我が子供と達を連れて玉葱の植え付きの体験を楽しくしました。観光客も参加できるような形に持って行けば喜ばれるでしょう。
そして、お客様からご要望が良くありますが、道の駅。
千曲市だからこそ、道の駅が出来てもおかしくないと思います。役場は「千曲ブランドの商品を一生懸命広がろうとしているけど、実際には手に入れるところが少ない。変な話、市長が押している千曲市の新幹線の駅より道の駅の方は効果があると思います。特に、日本はアメリカの悪い所を真似して、車社会になってきました。

とのように、農家・加工屋・旅館の交流会で話が盛り上がりました。

Chikuma City Hall's econ department put on a farmers/ producers/ ryokan get-together to try to create better connections among the three groups.

The farmers explained what crops they are producing,
The producers talked about the food-related products they are making,
And the ryokans considered what local products we could better use.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we already source a lot of of our foodstuffs locally, but we are always looking for better options. Hopefully this discussion group will continue.

One thing that came out of the discussions was the need to make the products more available to the guests of our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. I really wish we had an official 'Michi-no-Eki' roadside station for farmers to sell their goods at. One other area I'd like to see advanced is for visitors to be able to go into the fields and experience farmwork firsthand. I took our kids once to try planting onion seedlings, and they had a great time.

We had some great discussions at this gathering -- I look forward to more in the future.

戸倉上山田温泉の真ん中に千曲川がせっかく流れているから、時々川とのふれあいをしたくなる。川辺で散歩をするとか、川沿いのサイクリング道路で自転車に乗るとか、皮の風で凧揚げをするとか。

この間は娘の美咲ちゃんを連れて、川に石投げをしました。単純な遊びでしたが、一時間もいました。「そろそろ暗くなるから帰ろう」と言ったら、「海でもっと遊びたい」と。いいえ、海じゃなくて、川ですけど…　5才人に千曲が広くて、海の様に感じるらしい。

単純な遊び。自然と触れ合え。親子で楽しめる。戸倉上山田温泉・千曲川に来て、幸せ。

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is blessed with having the Chikuma River flow through its center. Every once in a while, I get the urge to go play by the river. Sometimes its just to take a walk, other times its to go for a bike ride on the riverside cycling path. Or maybe to go fly a kite in the breeze along the river banks.

The other day, I took our daughter Misaki down to the river just to throw rocks. It was simple fun, but we ended up playing for over an hour. "Misaki, it's getting dark so we should go back." "No, I wanna keep playing in the ocean!" Uhh, it's a river, not an ocean... I guess to a 5-year old the Chikuma River is so big it feels like the ocean.

Simple play. Enjoying Mother Nature. And having father-daughter fun. All right here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen along the Chikuma River.

沖縄全国大会：真面目なお遊び Fun Side to the Okinawa Convention

私の父親に良く言われました：　仕事は一生懸命。遊びも一生懸命。

旅館青年部の全国大会＠沖縄。大会の部分は真剣に参加しましたが、せっかく初沖縄だったので、遊びもしっかりしました。
海で泳いだり（長野は海がないから、前夜祭ビーチパーティー＠宜野湾トロピカルで海に飛び込んだ！）、
首里城見学（沖縄の独特の位置との歴史・文化の奥深さをより知りました）、
平和市で買い物（下の売り場で魚を買って、2階の食堂で調理してくれるのは最高！）
壺屋やちむん通り散策（清正陶器店で陶芸家の娘と出会って、その情熱で感心しました）

短い間だったが、亀清でのお仕事が待っていたし台風が向かっていたし、2泊だけで帰りました。沖縄を体験できて、嬉しかった！一番は観光ではなく、やはり、人とのふれあい。市場の方や陶芸屋さん等とのお話。我が亀清旅館もそうやって「顔のあるおもてなし」をお客様にこれからも提供したいと思っております。

My father always told me, "Work hard and Play hard."

On this trip to Okinawa for the ryokan association's national convention, I managed to do both.

I got in a swim in Okinawa's ocean at Ginowan's Tropical Beach before the pre-convention beach-side bbq,
I toured Naha's trademark Shuri Castle, which gave a lot of insight into Okinawa's unique position as a trading crossroads,
I shopped at the Heiwa-doori market (what a treat to be able to buy fish from a monger downstairs, and have a restaurant upstairs prepare it for lunch),
and strolled Tsuboya pottery street, stopping in at Kiyomasa Pottery and getting a heartfelt conversation with the daughter of the artisan.

It was a short trip, but with work waiting for me back at Kamesei and a typhoon headed to the islands, I went back to Nagano after only two nights in Okinawa. But I managed to make lots of long-lasting memories while there. The best memories weren't from the touristy spots, they were from getting to know the people -- the owner of the restaurant at the market, the pottery lady, etc. That's what I hope to provide for our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan -- personable service.

旅館青年部の全国大会＠沖縄：
遊びに行ったと思われるかもしれませんが、まじめなお仕事はちゃんとしてきました。

全国大会の中で、「分科会」があって、それぞれの委員会は研究発表をします。私が参加したのは政策立案委員会・観光連携委員会のプロデュースしたパネルディスカッション。国会議員の二人も来てくれて、業界の悩みの色々を議論しました。
無茶苦茶ドライでしょう。自分はどちらかと言うと、クソ真面目なので、大好きでした。
主の議論はどうやって日本の皆さんの休みを増やすか。先進国の中で、1年間の平均休日の日数は日本がビリです。もっと有休をとって、旅さえすれば私ども宿泊施設の利用が増える訳。
分析すれば、問題は2つ：時間がない事とお金がない事。
出てきた解決案：
「時間がない問題」
IFRS（国際財務報告基準）に登録をする事。IFRS制度の中で最低休日の日数規定がある。経営者は従業員を休ませる義務となる。今年の国会の会期ではIFRS登録は見合わせされたが、来期は期待する事。
「お金がない問題」
国が旅補助金を出す事。エコポイントの様に、旅行の為の補助金。既に、市町村によって市民の健康の為に宿泊代の補助制度がある。例えば、亀清旅館は西東京市の「国民健康保険事業」に登録をしていて、西東京の市民が泊まれば市から3000円の補助金が出る。
青年部の来年の陳情ポイントはこの二つで決まりかな？

During the ryokan junior association national convention in Okinawa, it wasn't all fun and games (and drinking). On the serious side, the various national level committees held break-out sessions to discuss the areas that they had worked on during this term. The session I attended was by the Government Relations Committee, and it featured a panel discussion that included two members of the Japanese Diet.

The main topic was how to get more Japanese people to take vacations. Of the developed countries, Japan rates last in the average number of vacation days people take per year. If more people went on vacation, there would be more use of our hotels and ryokans. The problem boils down to 2 factors: No time, and No money. The committee's solutions:

No Time: Have Japan join the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
One of the provisions of IFRS is a minimum number of vacation days. Companies would be obligated to get their employees to take a certain number of days off.
Apparently joining the IFRS didn't pass in this year's Diet session. Hopefully it will next year.

No Money: Have the government subsidize vacations.
The government already offers "Eco-Points" to subsidize the electronics and car manufacturing industries. And some municipalities subsidize hotel stays for the purpose of improving their people's health through recreation. For example, Kamesei Ryokan is registered with Nishi-Tokyo City. Citizens of that city get a 3000 yen discount when they stay with us.

Next term, when the ryokan association makes its visit to the Diet members, I think I know what we need to petition for.

沖縄のシーサー文化 Okinawa's Ubiquitous Seasir

旅館青年部の全国大会での沖縄。
沖縄と言うと、シーサー。
どこ行ってもあるって聞いていましたが、本当にどこに行ってもシーサーがありました。駐車場から屋根まで、いつも「シーサー見付け！」。

私は上山田神楽保存会で獅子笛をやっていますから沖縄流の獅子、このシーサーに興味が深いです。

実は、6年ぐらいお神楽をやってきたけど、獅子ってライオンではなく、犬だとつい最近に初めて知りました。まあ、創造的なものですから単純な犬でもないらしい。

沖縄のシーサーを見て、更に獅子に関心を持ちました。

During my trip to Okinawa for the ryokan junior association national convention, I was delighted to see all the seasir (alternatively spelled 'shiisaa') statues. Before going, I was told the statues would be everywhere, and after visiting I realized that indeed they were.

Okinawa's seasir are very similar to the shishi in Japan's main islands. I am personally really interested in them as I play the shishi flute for Kamiyamada's Kagura troupe, which features a two-person shishi dance.

I am embarrassed to admit that even though I've been part of the O-Kagura group for going on 6 years, I only recently found out that the shishi is, properly speaking, a dog, not a lion. To be more explicit, a shishi is an imaginary beast so it is not precisely the same as an actual dog, or lion for that matter.

After seeing all the seasir in Okinawa, it renewed my interest in shishi.

長野県旅館青年部のインバウンド部会に10万円のＯＢ賞 100,000 Yen "OB Award" for our Inbound Committee

27日に旅館青年部の全国大会は沖縄で行われました。この戸倉上山田温泉の支部長として、私も飛んで行きました。そこで、私が担当している長野県青年部のインバウンド委員会の2年間の行事が10万円のＯＢ賞を受賞しました。「飛び出せ長野、飛び出せ日本！」と言うプロジェクトで、県知事と北京の商談会へ行ったり、expedia.comやbooking.comなどの海外送客業者約15社を松本に呼んで、私達宿泊施設経営者の為の商談会を開いたり、その活動が認められました。

写真は私と県部長の宮坂さんの受賞の時です。本来ならば、書類を準備してくれた総務の宇佐美さんと兄妹委員会のしの委員長及び委員会の皆様が一緒に受けたかったけど、取り敢えずは代表として部台に上がりました。

ご存知かもしれませんが、この戸倉上山田温泉支部の「温泉塾」企画も受賞が出来ると望んでいましたが、残念ながらＮＧでした。優勝した企画を見たら、納得できました。Ｙｏｕ　Ｔｕｂｅで30万回再生されたＬａｄｙ　Ｋａｇａの企画やメディアで取り上がれた新潟県の美味しい朝食企画は全国レベルの影響があった。私が企画した温泉塾は比較的に可愛い物でした。受賞はしなかったけど、誇りに思っています。

Japan's Ryokan Junior Association once-every-two-years national convention was held in Okinawa on the 27th. As leader of the Togura-Kamiyamada division, I flew down for the festivities. There I had the honor of receiving the 100,000 yen OB Prize for the Nagano Junior Association's Inbound Project.

Our efforts in promoting Nagano overseas, including flying with the governor for a travel fair in Beijing, and having expedia.com, booking.com and a dozen other inbound-related companies gather in Matsumoto for a trade fair, garnered the attention of the judges and resulted in being awarded this prize.

Pictured is myself and Nagano Prefecture leader Miyasaka-san accepting the award. I feel that all the team members, especially Usami-san who put the materials together and my sister committee chairperson Shino-san, should have been up on the stage, too. They all worked so hard!

As you may know, I was also hoping the project I ran here in Togura-Kamiyamada, Onsen-Jook, would also win a prize. Unfortunately it was not to be. But after seeing the projects that did win, I could understand why. The Lady Kaga promotional video for Kaga Onsen has 300,000 views on YouTube, and the other overall winner, Niigata Prefecture for their "Most Delicious Breakfast" project got nation-wide media exposure. My Onsen-Jook deal just doesn't compare. But I am still proud of it.

田中要次とＮＨＫの千曲川取材 With Yohji Tanaka for NHK's Chikuma River Show

NHKのＢＳプレミアムの取材で、ドラマ俳優の田中要次さんが千曲川を源流から旅すると番組の撮影が来ました。千曲川沿いの唯一の温泉地として、我が戸倉上山田温泉にも取材に来ました。そして、この辺の千曲川と言うと、サイクリング道路！私が当温泉のレンタサイクルを担当しているという事で、亀清旅館の取材もして頂けました。

従って、田中さんとの良い出会いとなりました。主の撮影は千曲川の景色を自転車で楽しむとの事でした。千曲サイクリングクラブのメンバー4人（私も入れて）が田中さんとこの戸倉上山田温泉から川中島の古戦場まで走りました。詳しくは番組をどうぞ、ご覧になって下さい。放送日はまだ決まっていないけど、11月の頭の予定だそうです。

田中さんは『世界の村で発見! こんなところに日本人7』の番組取材でパタゴニアから帰ってきたばかりです。信州の温泉宿にこの青い目の若旦那を見て、「こんなところにアメリカ人か？」と笑っていました。

今回の取材で私が特に嬉しかったのは、こうやって変わった外国人の事ではなくて、レンタサイクルの活動でつながりました。努力をすれば、良い事がある！

National TV broadcaster NHK has been in town shooting footage for a program about the Chikuma River. TV drama actor Yohji Tanaka is travelling down the river starting all the way from the source. The production choose to stop at our onsen-town, Togura-Kamiyamada, as it is the only onsen resort area located on the Chikuma River. And since there is a bicycle trail along the river through this area, they decided to feature cycling. That brought them to me, the organizer of rental cycles here at Togura-Kamiyamada.

It was great to meet Tanaka-san. And it was exciting to get to ride with him and the members of the Chikuma Cycling Club, as we rode bikes from the onsen to Kawanakajima, approximately 20km. I won't spoil the surprises, so to see more, wait for the TV show. It is scheduled to air in the beginning of November on NHK's Premium cable channel.

Tanaka-san had just gotten back from filming a show in Patagonia about a Japanese person living way out in the countryside there. He joked when he met me about an American living way out in the Japanese countryside!

One thing I was happy about this filming was it was due to my activities in promoting bicycling in the area, not because of my unique status of being a foreigner living in Japan. Some of my hard work is starting to pay off!

Prepping Togura-Kamiyamada's Rental Cycles for the Fall Cycling Season

千曲サイクリングクラブと戸倉上山田温泉旅館組合の連携で、駅で捨てられた自転車をレスキューして、レンタサイクルで提供しております。我が亀清旅館を込めて、5ヵ所で借りれます。

先日はサイクリングクラブの会長が来てくれて、ブレーキとかタイヤ―を点検しました。この秋のサイクリングシーズンに向かって、整備しました。

千曲川沿いにサイクリング道路もあるし、周辺のサイクリングマップもあるし、戸倉上山田温泉は本当に自転車のメッカです。

The Chikuma Cycling Club and the Togura-Kamiyamada Ryokan Association have teamed up to offer rental bicycles. The Cycling Club rescued bikes that had been discarded at the local train stations, and we make them available for use to guests who stay at our inns. The bikes are available here at Kamesei Ryokan as well as 4 other inns in town.

Recently the leader of the cycling club came and inspected our bicycles. We checked the brakes and tires and everything, and got them ready for the Fall cycling season.

Our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, is a mecca for bicycling, with a cycling path along the Chikuma River and a cycling map with 10 area courses. This fall, come and enjoy bicycling in Togura-Kamiyamada!

温泉の御風呂作り「文化」の中で、湯口が重要な一部。以前は長野県の保健所が湯口を無くそうとした事がある。湯口とお風呂の差があればお湯が飛んで、菌が発生する可能性があるから。私達旅館側は「お湯を上からかけるのではなくて、お風呂の中から出すようにすれば、温泉の風情・趣がなくなる。温泉ファンに笑われるよ！」と反対しました。

結局、保健所が負けました。

それだけ、「湯口」の重要性が高い。

亀清旅館では、私が7年前に跡取りとしてきましたが、その間は露天風呂を3つも作りました。それぞれの露天風呂の湯口は独特な作りにしました。
「100年風呂」は川の石で作って、周りは雑木林で、すべては自然な資材で作りました。その湯口は竹にしました。
女湯の外のヒバ風呂は割と狭い所で作ったので細かい所になるべく楽しくしたいと思いました。温泉の大工さん、村越さんにチェーンソーアートの亀を作ってもらったので、湯口にしました。
そして、去年に出来た貸切露天「しなの風呂」の湯口は周りの庭とバッティングしない様に逆にシンプルなヒバ材で作った湯口にしました（写真）。

One of the main elements of an onsen bath is the "Yu-Guchi", literally 'the mouth for the onsen water'. The English word 'faucet' seems so unimaginative for such an important part of the onsen bath.

A couple of years ago, Nagano Prefecture's Health Department tried to do away with yu-guchi. Apparently if water is allowed to spill into the bath, the resulting splash leads to an increase in bacteria. But our ryokan association lead the fight to argue against such a rule, saying having the water pour into the bath from the side rather than from above would take away from the overall 'onsen' experience.

Finally, the Health Department backed down, and we are free to incorporate yu-guchi into our bath designs. That's how critical yu-guchi are to onsen baths.

At Kamesei Ryokan, I moved here 7 years ago and in that time, I have built 3 outdoor baths. Each one has a unique yu-guchi.
For the "100 Year Bath", I made it out of river rock and all natural materials, and it is surrounded by a quiet garden. So I made the yu-guchi out of a length of bamboo, to fit the natural setting.
The bath outside the ladies bath is made of yellow cedar. There wasn't any room to make a garden, so I wanted to add some creative details. For this bath's yu-guchi, I had a local artisan make a chainsaw art turtle.
And for our new private onsen bath, "Shinano-buro", I wanted the yu-guchi to blend in with the bath surrounds as much as possible to keep the focuse on the intricate garden we built around the bath. So its yu-guchi is a simple one made of yellow cedar.
