６～７月は杏、
７～８月はさくらんぼ
９月はぶどう、
１０～１２月はりんご
が通常ですが、
今年のぶどうは豊富で
ぶどう狩りは１０月まで続きそうです。

先日は美咲ちゃんを連れて、中島農園のぶどう畑に行きました。宿泊のお客様のデザートの為にぶどうをいっぱい採ってきました。（採りたてのぶどうで、お客様が大喜び）

ぶどう狩りは体験した事がありますか？やってみたら、きっと良い思い出が出来ます。我が亀清旅館から車で５分で、果実畑そしてぶどう狩りの楽しさの体験が出来ます。

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is fortunate to have many fruit orchards nearby. Typically the seasons run like this:

June-July -- Apricots
July-August -- Cherries
September -- Grapes
October-December -- Apples

This year, though, our areas grapes are having a bumper crop. It looks like we'll be able to do grape picking through the end of October.

The other day, I took our daughter Misaki to Nakajima Orchard for grape picking. We picked several dozens of bunches to take back to Kamesei Ryokan to serve to our guests. They certainly appreciated having fresh-picked, juicy grapes for dessert.

Have you ever picked grapes? There is something different about being in a grape orchard -- the air is so refreshing. Come and try it! Our inn, Kamesei Ryokan is only a 5 minute drive from the orchards.

October, 2012 marks the 15th anniversary for the Nagano Shinkansen. In celebration, JR East is offering a half-price special offer this month for travel from Tokyo to Nagano.

Built for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, the Nagano Shinkansen bullet train has made travel to Nagano exceptionally convenient. Before 1998, there was the JR Ltd. Express "Asama" train that took 3-1/2 hours between Ueno Station in Tokyo and Togura Station, the stop for our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. (Old-timers remember the days of steam engine trains, when it took 7 hours from Ueno to Togura.) Now with the Nagano Shinkansen, you can go from Tokyo Station to Ueda Station, change to the local Shinano Railway to Togura, all in as little as 1 hour and 50 minutes.

And, in the 2014 fiscal year, JR will extend the Nagano Shinkansen all the way to Kanazawa, so travelling to Nagano will be even more convenient!

亀清旅館の客室「夕映」の庭に４ｍぐらいの金木犀の木がある。１０月になれば、その木の橙色の花が咲いて、ジャスミンのような香りが流れます。

毎年の空の楽しみ。尚且つ、亀清旅館の庭にこの気があって、嬉しい。

In the garden of Kamesei Ryokan's guestroom "Yubae" is a 4-meter tall sweet osmanthus tree (Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus). Every year in October, its yellowish-orange flowers bloom, and a lovely jasmine-like fragrance comes wafting out of the blossoms.

The sweet osmanthus fragrance is a highlight of every fall, and this osmanthus tree is a highlight of Kamesei Ryokan's garden.

信州の温泉巡りはまだまだ続いています。
今回はお洒落の軽井沢の一番お洒落の立ち寄り温泉：トンボの湯。
若女将と二人で立ち寄りしてみました。
設備はお洒落で快適で良かったし、内風呂の大きい窓からも、広い露天風呂からも浦の丘を眺める事が出来、お湯と共に落ち着かせる。
私達が行った日は偶々りんご風呂になっていまして、りんごと一緒にお風呂に浴びれて、楽しかった。（そのりんごを食べる人がいるのかなと思いました。）

ただ、お湯は成分が薄いせいか、あまり「温泉だ！」と言う雰囲気ではなかった。
そして、入浴代は結構高い。一人１２００円でした。ＧＷと８月は更に高いそうです。恐らく、長野県の一番高い温泉だろう。白樺湖の池の平ホテルの立ち寄り入浴代もそれぐらいな金額ですが、洞窟風呂を始め、県下最大露天風呂など、種類は豊富です。トンボの湯の温泉は内風呂と露天風呂の２つだけ。まあ、軽井沢として、妥当でしょうね。

In my continuing 'research' on Nagano's Top 100 Onsens, the latest one I went to was Tombo-no-Yu, upscale Karuizawa's most upscale bathhouse.

Tombo-no-Yu is definitely spacious and stylish, and the both the indoor bath through an enormous picture window and the expansive outdoor bath provide an exhilarating view of the hill behind the bathhouse.

We happened to time it for apple-bath day. It was fun soaking in the bath as apples came bobbing by.

However, the onsen water's mineral content must be pretty minimal, as it didn't give a strong sense of being an "onsen". And, the price is pretty steep -- 1200 yen per person (with higher prices during the Golden Week holiday and August). This is comparable to Ikenotaira Hotel's day-use bath, but their's features, among others, an enormous 'cave bath' and Nagano's largest outdoor bath. With Tombo-no-Yu having only 2 onsen baths (1 indoor and 1 outdoor), I suspect that makes them the most expensive bath in all of Nagano. Perhaps that is suitable, though, being that it is Karuizawa.

１０月３日は若女将の誕生日という事で、気に入りの軽井沢へドライブで行きました。我が亀清旅館にお泊りになるお客様から軽井沢の事をよく聞かれます。答えれるように、私達もある程度詳しくないと…　という事で、下見を込めて、二人で軽井沢へデート。

October 3rd was Mari's birthday, so we went for a drive to her favorite destination, Karuizawa. Many of our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan ask about that resort town, so we like to go there ourselves to get good ideas to pass on to our guests. So with that in mind, we went on a little date to Karuizawa.

まずは昼ごはん。軽井沢の特徴は沢山の小さな、個性的なお店が多いです。今回の隠れレストランはＭａｇｇｉｏ　ｄａ　Ａ’ｄａｇｉｏでした。旧軽銀座通りと聖パウロ教会の近辺のお洒落なお店。オマール海老料理が特徴。詳しくはＨＰを見てください。ここはお勧めが出来るお店。

First things first: Lunch. Karuizawa is fortunate to have so many small, out-of-the-way dining establishments. The hidden treasure we found this time was Maggio da A'dagio, a stylish restaurant that features lobster cuisine. Check out their website for details, but we can whole-heartedly recommend them.

昼御飯を食べたから、お散歩。軽井沢の別荘地は別な世界です。林の中の細い小路、涼しい影、苔で被されている浅間石の塀。ゆっくりした散策もしくは自転車乗りに向いています。（なおかつ、食べてからは少しでも運動しないと…）
After lunch, we went for a walk. Karuizawa's summer cabin neighborhoods are a separate world. Narrow lanes in a woodsy setting, lined by moss-covered volcanic rock from nearby Asama Mountain. The neighborhoods are perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. (Plus, it's great to get exercise after a meal.)

軽井沢のデートで絶対に外せないのは、買い物。広々したアウトレットモールとお洒落のハルニレテラスは今の人気スポットですが、元となる旧軽井沢「銀座」は私と若女将の気に入り。ここでしか買えない主背が沢山ある。その中で、若女将の特に好きなのは小原商店というブティックです。いつも亀清旅館で来ている服はここで見付けている。
No trip to Karuizawa would be complete without a bit of shopping. The massive outlet mall and the upscale Harunire Terrace are the popular spots at the present. But the shopping district that started it all, the Kyu- (Old-) Karuizawa "Ginza". Here you can find items that you can't find anywhere else. Mari's favorite is a boutique called Ohara Shoten. This is where she shops for the unique tops she wears here at Kamesei Ryokan.

軽井沢のデートで次は御茶タイム。
歴史的な万平ホテルのラウンジにお茶しに行きました。
John Lennon, Henry Kissinger, 三島由紀夫さん、田中角栄さん、等などが泊まった立派なお宿です。
軽井沢のもう一つの伝説ホテル、三笠ホテルはもう、歴史観になりました。万平ホテルの皆様がホテルとして継続なされて、頭を下げます。
軽井沢の魅力を更に感じました。

How to top off a date to Kariuzawa? With taking time for tea, of course.
Mari took me to the historical Mampei Hotel for tea in their lounge. People the likes of John Lennon, Henry Kissinger and Yukio Mishima have stayed here. Quite an amazing hotel. And to think it is still in full operation. Another hotel on the other side of Karuizawa, Mikasa Hotel, has been turned into a museum. Running the Mampei must take an extraordinary amount of energy. I tip my hat to the owner and staff.

地元の農家・加工屋・旅館の交流会 Local Farmers, Producers and Inns Discussion Group

1日の夜に千曲市の役場の主催で農家・加工業者・旅館の交流会が行われました。
千曲市の農家さん達はどういう作物を育っているか、
加工業者はどんな食品を作っているか、
そして私達旅館側がお料理でどういう取り組みが出来るか、
初めての話し合いでした。

これからはこういう情報交換・交流会が継続となりますので、我が亀清旅館が既に地元の食材を多く使っていますが、更に使える道が出てくればいいと思っています。

今回は一番思ったのがお料理もそうですけど、観光客と農家の連携も取れば良いと。
蕎麦と玉ねぎ植え付きや収穫体験が既にあります。一度、我が子供と達を連れて玉葱の植え付きの体験を楽しくしました。観光客も参加できるような形に持って行けば喜ばれるでしょう。
そして、お客様からご要望が良くありますが、道の駅。
千曲市だからこそ、道の駅が出来てもおかしくないと思います。役場は「千曲ブランドの商品を一生懸命広がろうとしているけど、実際には手に入れるところが少ない。変な話、市長が押している千曲市の新幹線の駅より道の駅の方は効果があると思います。特に、日本はアメリカの悪い所を真似して、車社会になってきました。

とのように、農家・加工屋・旅館の交流会で話が盛り上がりました。

Chikuma City Hall's econ department put on a farmers/ producers/ ryokan get-together to try to create better connections among the three groups.

The farmers explained what crops they are producing,
The producers talked about the food-related products they are making,
And the ryokans considered what local products we could better use.

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we already source a lot of of our foodstuffs locally, but we are always looking for better options. Hopefully this discussion group will continue.

One thing that came out of the discussions was the need to make the products more available to the guests of our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada. I really wish we had an official 'Michi-no-Eki' roadside station for farmers to sell their goods at. One other area I'd like to see advanced is for visitors to be able to go into the fields and experience farmwork firsthand. I took our kids once to try planting onion seedlings, and they had a great time.

We had some great discussions at this gathering -- I look forward to more in the future.

戸倉上山田温泉の真ん中に千曲川がせっかく流れているから、時々川とのふれあいをしたくなる。川辺で散歩をするとか、川沿いのサイクリング道路で自転車に乗るとか、皮の風で凧揚げをするとか。

この間は娘の美咲ちゃんを連れて、川に石投げをしました。単純な遊びでしたが、一時間もいました。「そろそろ暗くなるから帰ろう」と言ったら、「海でもっと遊びたい」と。いいえ、海じゃなくて、川ですけど…　5才人に千曲が広くて、海の様に感じるらしい。

単純な遊び。自然と触れ合え。親子で楽しめる。戸倉上山田温泉・千曲川に来て、幸せ。

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is blessed with having the Chikuma River flow through its center. Every once in a while, I get the urge to go play by the river. Sometimes its just to take a walk, other times its to go for a bike ride on the riverside cycling path. Or maybe to go fly a kite in the breeze along the river banks.

The other day, I took our daughter Misaki down to the river just to throw rocks. It was simple fun, but we ended up playing for over an hour. "Misaki, it's getting dark so we should go back." "No, I wanna keep playing in the ocean!" Uhh, it's a river, not an ocean... I guess to a 5-year old the Chikuma River is so big it feels like the ocean.

Simple play. Enjoying Mother Nature. And having father-daughter fun. All right here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen along the Chikuma River.

沖縄全国大会：真面目なお遊び Fun Side to the Okinawa Convention

私の父親に良く言われました：　仕事は一生懸命。遊びも一生懸命。

旅館青年部の全国大会＠沖縄。大会の部分は真剣に参加しましたが、せっかく初沖縄だったので、遊びもしっかりしました。
海で泳いだり（長野は海がないから、前夜祭ビーチパーティー＠宜野湾トロピカルで海に飛び込んだ！）、
首里城見学（沖縄の独特の位置との歴史・文化の奥深さをより知りました）、
平和市で買い物（下の売り場で魚を買って、2階の食堂で調理してくれるのは最高！）
壺屋やちむん通り散策（清正陶器店で陶芸家の娘と出会って、その情熱で感心しました）

短い間だったが、亀清でのお仕事が待っていたし台風が向かっていたし、2泊だけで帰りました。沖縄を体験できて、嬉しかった！一番は観光ではなく、やはり、人とのふれあい。市場の方や陶芸屋さん等とのお話。我が亀清旅館もそうやって「顔のあるおもてなし」をお客様にこれからも提供したいと思っております。

My father always told me, "Work hard and Play hard."

On this trip to Okinawa for the ryokan association's national convention, I managed to do both.

I got in a swim in Okinawa's ocean at Ginowan's Tropical Beach before the pre-convention beach-side bbq,
I toured Naha's trademark Shuri Castle, which gave a lot of insight into Okinawa's unique position as a trading crossroads,
I shopped at the Heiwa-doori market (what a treat to be able to buy fish from a monger downstairs, and have a restaurant upstairs prepare it for lunch),
and strolled Tsuboya pottery street, stopping in at Kiyomasa Pottery and getting a heartfelt conversation with the daughter of the artisan.

It was a short trip, but with work waiting for me back at Kamesei and a typhoon headed to the islands, I went back to Nagano after only two nights in Okinawa. But I managed to make lots of long-lasting memories while there. The best memories weren't from the touristy spots, they were from getting to know the people -- the owner of the restaurant at the market, the pottery lady, etc. That's what I hope to provide for our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan -- personable service.

沖縄全国大会：真面目なお仕事 Serious Side to the Okinawa Convention

分科会Panel Discussion

旅館青年部の全国大会＠沖縄：
遊びに行ったと思われるかもしれませんが、まじめなお仕事はちゃんとしてきました。

全国大会の中で、「分科会」があって、それぞれの委員会は研究発表をします。私が参加したのは政策立案委員会・観光連携委員会のプロデュースしたパネルディスカッション。国会議員の二人も来てくれて、業界の悩みの色々を議論しました。
無茶苦茶ドライでしょう。自分はどちらかと言うと、クソ真面目なので、大好きでした。
主の議論はどうやって日本の皆さんの休みを増やすか。先進国の中で、1年間の平均休日の日数は日本がビリです。もっと有休をとって、旅さえすれば私ども宿泊施設の利用が増える訳。
分析すれば、問題は2つ：時間がない事とお金がない事。
出てきた解決案：
「時間がない問題」
IFRS（国際財務報告基準）に登録をする事。IFRS制度の中で最低休日の日数規定がある。経営者は従業員を休ませる義務となる。今年の国会の会期ではIFRS登録は見合わせされたが、来期は期待する事。
「お金がない問題」
国が旅補助金を出す事。エコポイントの様に、旅行の為の補助金。既に、市町村によって市民の健康の為に宿泊代の補助制度がある。例えば、亀清旅館は西東京市の「国民健康保険事業」に登録をしていて、西東京の市民が泊まれば市から3000円の補助金が出る。
青年部の来年の陳情ポイントはこの二つで決まりかな？

During the ryokan junior association national convention in Okinawa, it wasn't all fun and games (and drinking). On the serious side, the various national level committees held break-out sessions to discuss the areas that they had worked on during this term. The session I attended was by the Government Relations Committee, and it featured a panel discussion that included two members of the Japanese Diet.

The main topic was how to get more Japanese people to take vacations. Of the developed countries, Japan rates last in the average number of vacation days people take per year. If more people went on vacation, there would be more use of our hotels and ryokans. The problem boils down to 2 factors: No time, and No money. The committee's solutions:

No Time: Have Japan join the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
One of the provisions of IFRS is a minimum number of vacation days. Companies would be obligated to get their employees to take a certain number of days off.
Apparently joining the IFRS didn't pass in this year's Diet session. Hopefully it will next year.

No Money: Have the government subsidize vacations.
The government already offers "Eco-Points" to subsidize the electronics and car manufacturing industries. And some municipalities subsidize hotel stays for the purpose of improving their people's health through recreation. For example, Kamesei Ryokan is registered with Nishi-Tokyo City. Citizens of that city get a 3000 yen discount when they stay with us.

Next term, when the ryokan association makes its visit to the Diet members, I think I know what we need to petition for.
