信州の冬がとにかく寒いです。暖まりたい時に温泉はもちろんありますが、もう一つな場所もある：杏の里アグリパークのトロピカルフルーツガーデン。亀清旅館から来るまで20分。
Winter in Nagano is a very cold affair. Where do we go to warm up? To an onsen of course. But there is another place, too: The Tropical Fruits Garden. It's a short 20-minute drive from Kamesei Ryokan

去年は雪で終わって、今年は雪で始めた。亀清旅館の玄関前の松が雪をかぶって、とっても「和」の雰囲気が出ました。
Last year went out with snow, this year came in with snow. The branches of the pine tree at the entrance of Kamesei Ryokan bears the snow so beautifully.

今年の最後の日は夕方、雪になりました。そのお陰で、綺麗な雪景色になりました。
Today, the last day of the year, we had a light snow fall in the evening, blanketing everything with a beautiful touch of white.

この間、私達のシアトルからのベストフレンドが来ましたのでせっかく長野に来てくれたからそばに連れて行きました。信州では、どこの蕎麦屋が美味しいかって話したら必ずけんかになります。皆がそれぞれの篤い意見があるから。ですから、私がその店の雰囲気でいつも決めています。戸倉上山田温泉なら、地元の自然の為に活躍している「はたや」さん。
Our best friends from Seattle came to visit, so we took them to eat a local specialty: soba buckwheat noodles. When in Nagano, it's best to avoid talking about which soba restaurant is the best -- such conversations always end in arguments as everyone has such strong opinions on the matter. I choose restaurants by the feel of the place. So for here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, it's "Hataya".
亀清旅館のロビーに素敵なＪａｚｚコンサートが行いました。地元の上田混声合唱段が我宿でまた忘年会をやってくれて、仲間の佐藤雅彦さんを呼んで、夜は薪ストーブの前でコンサートをやりました。他のお客さんもお聞きになって（音が外まで聞こえたらしい）、楽しい夜でした。
A chorus group from neighboring Ueda City held their end of the year party at our inn. A nationally famous jazz pianist, Masahiko Satoh, came in from Tokyo for the event, and we were treated to a wonderful jazz performance.

今日はテレビ信州の｢夕方ゲット｣と言う番組で、｢和の心の外人｣の特集で亀清の青い眼の若旦那の取材もありました。ご覧になりましたでしょうか？ちょっとでも戸倉上山田温泉のＰＲになったかな？私はからころ事業の町興しのプロジェクトの会議で忙しくて、ちょっとしか見えなかった。どうでしたでしょうか？
Local television station TV-Shinshu did a special on foreigners living in Nagano, including a deal on me. I was busy with meetings so couldn't catch all of it. I hope they did a good job of editing! And that it was good pr for the town.
家族でＮＨＫの大河ドラマ、風林火山、を見ていました。終わったら、うちの子供たちが｢勘助のお墓を見たい｣と言い出して、早速連れて行きました。亀清から車で30分ぐらいです。風林火山のファン、皆様どうぞ！
This year, national broadcaster NHK's year-long historical drama has been Fuurinkazan, about the famous samurai battles at Kawanakajima. Our kids watched the show and wanted to see the grave of one of the famious samurais, Kansuke Yamamoto. So I took them there today. It's only about 30 minutes by car from our inn.
