焼鳥屋。食べる為だけじゃな。地元の人達と楽しい会話の為にも。戸倉上山田温泉の「ゆみ」と言う焼き鳥屋さんでカウンターの向こう側の方が芸子さんの世界を卒業したYumiさんです。卒業したかもしれないけど、会話のエンタテインメントとしてはやはりプロ。我が宿に泊まる外国からのお客さんをよく連れてきます。１人は６時半に行ったのに、１０時半になっても帰ってこない。大丈夫かどうかチェックしに行ったら、彼がカウンターに座って、ビールの空グラス５本ぐらいがあって、周りのお客さん達とに盛り上がっていました。さっすがYumiさん！
Yakitori restaurants (grilled chicken on skewers) are abundant throughout Japan. They are a great way to meet the locals. The one closest to Kamesei is Yumi's, run by an ex-geisha. Yumi-san is a master at entertaining conversations. I often take guests from overseas there for dinner, dropping them off and depositing them into the skillful hands of Yumi-san. One Brit I dropped off at 6:30pm hadn't come back yet as of 10:30, so I went over to check on him. There he was, at the counter, with about 5 empty beer glasses in front of him and shit-eating grin on his face, embroiled in lively conversation with Yumi-san and the other guests. That's Yumi's for you!
自転車と千曲川
今日は天気が良かったし、なんとなく外に行くように引っ張られました。子供達を連れて、千曲川沿いのサイクリングロードを自転車で通りました。信州の自然は良いですね！
Today the weather was nice and I was somehow drawn to going outside. So I took the kids for a bike ride along the Chikuma River Cycling Road. I'm so glad Nagano has such beautiful nature!

亀清旅館の庭の中の手作り露天風呂の鶴亀が完成になりました。ガーデナーの岡田さんがもみじの木を植えてくれましたのでこれで鶴が形になりました。亀は川の石で頭、手、足、尻尾で、鶴が縦の石とこのもみじの木。露天風呂浴びながら、この鶴亀を楽しんでいただけます。
Kamesei's handmade outdoor bath's Crane-Turtle is now completed. Our gardener, Okada-san, just planted the Japanese maple, giving shape to the crane. The turtle's head, hands, feet and tail are made out of large, round river rocks, and the crane is made up of the two vertical rocks and the maple. So now you can enjoy the Crane-Turtle while soaking in our bath!

温もりのあるロビー 'nukumori'
夕べに泊まった渡辺さんに新しい言葉を教えて頂きました：「温もり」。「ぬく何？」と私が言ったら、「亀清旅館のロビーは木の温もりがあります」と言ってくれました。確かに、私は昔から亀清のロビーの快適さと木造作りが大好きでした。鉄鋼作るより落ち着きます。「温もり」。いい言葉ですね。
Last night, Watanabe-san was our guest. He taught me a new Japanese word: 'nukumori', meaning 'warmth'. He used it in reference to the wood construction of our lobby, something I had always been enamored of. 'Nukumori'. Good word.

朝早く長男を連れて、小学校への通学待ち合わせの場所へ行った帰り、近所のおばさんが野沢菜を漬けていました。「親戚の皆にあげるからいっぱい作る」と言う。うちの母親のピクルズを漬ける事を思い出した。太田さん、頑張って下さいね。
On the way back from taking our son to his meeting place for the walk to school, I saw our neighbor doing her annual preparations for 'nozawana', our local pickled vegetable specialty. It reminded me of my mom pickling cucumbers. Ota-san, keep up the good work!

先日、私の地元の米国で「感謝祭」が行われました。毎年の「何に及び誰に感謝しているか」と考えるときです。私が家族を連れて、亀清旅館の跡継ぎのために上山田温泉に引越ししたのは２年間が立ちましたので感謝する事が沢山あります。
亀清旅館の面、この２年間は皆様のお陰で最高でした。「慣れたか」と良く聞かれるが、２年前を比較したら慣れてきたけれど日本のおもてなしは一生を掛けてもマスターできないなと思います。アメリカ風のおもてなしもちょっとずつ取り入れた。例えば、ロビーに薪ストーブを付けたり、母親のレシピーのクッキーをお茶菓子用で焼いたり等。そして、他の若旦那に教えられて、姨捨山夜警・伝説ツアーを始めました。TVの取材になったほど好評です。それと、一番の出来上がりはやはり手作業で作った露天風呂です。手伝ってくれた皆様に感謝しております。お陰さまで、お客様の楽しみは１つ増えました。この２年間で暗い事も多少ありました。あるお客さんに凄く差別的に言われた事もあったり、悪魔のクチコミもあった。けれども、それより、思い出になったのは「心身ともにリラックス出来た」と言うクチコミと、「来てくれて有難う」と言ったら、「いいえ、こちらこそ。タイラーさんがこの昔ながらの宿を守ってくれるのが有難い」と言うお客様もいた事です。
町の面では、夏祭りのお陰で私が仲間として受けられたし、旅館青年部で色々と勉強になったし、国際交流協会で私のアメリカの文化を地元の皆様とShareで来たし、上山田お神楽保存会でいい友達が出来た。皆様、有難う。
家族の面では、米国に残した親に悪いことしちゃったけれど（特に母親が泣いているようです）が、妻と息子達といいチームで頑張っています。そして、今年、見事に女の子も生まれました。ここの家族と友達にも全面的に支えて頂いているので本当に感謝しています。
皆様に、この２年間を有難うございました。この青い目の若旦那が感謝しております。
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to reflect on all I have been given since moving to Nagano to help continue this inn. Two years have passed since coming to Kamesei Ryokan. People ask, 'Are you used to it yet?' I think one could spend an entire lifetime and never totally get used to it, but compared with 2 years ago, I feel more comfortable. And I have everyone to thank for that.
As for the inn, I have added a few touches of American hospitality, such as the wood burning stove in the lobby and my Mom's recipe cookies for the guests. I have started guiding tours to Obasute for the night view, something that's even been featured on local tv. And my biggest accomplishment has been making the outdoor bath by hand. All of this is thanks to everyone's help.
As for the town, the summer festival has been monumental in getting me accepted as an 'insider'. The Junior Innkeepers Assoc. has been a major support network for me. The Int'l Exchange Assoc. has been instrumental in allowing me to share my American culture with everyone. And the Okagura shishi dance guys have become some of my best friends. Thank you, everyone.
As for my family, I feel bad about leaving my parents back home, but my wife and sons and I have become a great team here. Plus this year we have been blessed with the birth of our daughter. And the family and friends here have been so supportive -- I couldn't have done what I have without them.
Thanks, too, to the Big Guy upstairs for making this all happen.
新しい露天風呂の横のイチョウが紅葉で真黄色で露天風呂に落ちる葉っぱがなかなかいい風流です。露天風呂って、やはりいいな。
Right next to our new outdoor bath is a ginkgo tree. It's leaves have turned a brilliant shade of yellow. The falling leaves add a nice touch to the natural feel of the bath.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺のりんご農園は今ふじりんごのピークです。今朝はお客さんを連れて行きましたので娘さんのなみちゃんが美味しく食べていました。
In the areas around our onsen, there are many apple orchards. Some offer u-pick. This morning, I took some guests to one of the orchards, and their daughter, Nami, enjoyed tasting the fresh-picked fuji apples.
