Enjoying Gondo's Glamour

Our family went on an outing today to Nagano City. We rambled along Gondo, the covered shopping arcade. These arcades are slowly disappearing in Japan, being replaced by American-style suburban shopping centers.
My hometown of Seattle actually has America's first shopping mall, Northgate. Back in 1950, some developers designed a row of specialty stores (including Nordstrom's -- back then just a shoe store) and anchored by a department store, facing a pedestrian 'mall' and surrounded by a parking lot. To get the shoppers out of Seattle's rain, a cover was added to the mall. Voila! The suburban shopping mall.
Now, every town has mall with acres of parking lots and the same chain stores. The same towns have downtown areas that have lots of unique shops and a lot of character, but are struggling as shoppers flock to the malls with the free parking.
Japan's arcades like Gondo have unique specialty shops and family-run stores, providing a great opportunity to stop and talk with the owners. And walking under the glamorous roof makes you feel like a star. The experience is so much more rewarding than the purely commercial rush of a shopping mall. I hope arcades like Gondo can survive and flourish.

Fall Colors in our Outdoor Bath's Garden

Kamesei Ryokan

This is the first full autumn for the garden surrounding our outdoor bath here at Kamesei Ryokan. Our gardener specifically planted maples that turn yellow, red and brown. However, the air in this garden is warmed by the onsen bath, so the trees have been slow to turn color. Today, though, when I checked on the garden, I was treated to these beautiful colors. Fall has finally come to our garden!

Chishiki-Ji Temple

About 5 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen is Chishiki Temple, famous locally for the brilliant fall colors of its maple trees. I checked to see how the colors were developing today. They were just starting to turn -- I think the leaves will be in peak color in another week or so.
The mountains around our onsen town are a collage of yellow and orange and brown colors. This afternoon I went with Mari and our baby Misaki to Nishi Kouen (West Park) for a Fall Foliage Picnic.

Cous Cous and Chopsticks

This American’s Omotenashi

Our Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc. hosted a group of Japanophiles travelling from LeMans, France. We held a banquet tonight for them. I don't speak any French, but by using Japanese and English (as well as help from the interpreter) we had some great conversations. Part of the banquet's cuisine was French as well. One thing I discovered: cous-cous and chopsticks don't work well together.

Round 2: Prep Finished

Miscellaneous

ground zero

Last year I built an outdoor bath outside of the men's bath. Looking back, I don't know how I found the time to do it. I've been intending to build a 2nd outdoor bath, this time outside of the women's bath, but lately I've been busy with the Nagano Inbound Summit and Halloween, so I haven't been able to get started on the 2nd bath. But recently I finished clearing out the space for the bath, and met with the bath builder (this time it will be a wood bath), the Onsen Company, our gardener, and a carpenter. So now I have to build the concrete base, run the onsen pipes, finish the surround, build the wooden deck and planters. The goal is to get everything done by the end of the year. Here we go!

Nagano City Blessed by Mountains

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Today, Kamesei's chef and I went to Nagano City for a meeting. From the 12th floor of the downtown building where the meeting was held, I took in the spectacular views of Nagano City from above. I realized the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains -- truly blessed.

Cool Prizes for Guessing the Pumpkin Weight

Recently I have been made the proud recipient of a couple of awards. One was for guessing the weight of a pumpkin at our local grocery store's Halloween Contest. For doing that, I received some cool Halloween stuff.
The other was from our prefecture's main newspaper, Shinmai, for their annual website contest. As I mentioned earlier, this blog was nominated. It turns out, I won the blog competition. They will run a special article in their November 7th issue.
I was pleasantly surprised by both prizes. And I especially want to thank everyone who voted for this blog in the Shinmai contest!

We had the pleasure of hosting a local Harley Davidson bike team. One of our neighbors asked them where they were going to ride, and the member answered, "Nowhere -- Kamesei was our destination." I was thrilled to hear that!
