毎年、亀清旅館の庭を少しずつ改善しています。今年の新しい庭は客室「松風」の庭です。私が後ろの塀を作りながら、庭師の岡田さんがデザインをかけて、この場所に会う植物を選んで、土を準備して、植物の植え付けをやってくれました。

今までの松風のお客さんが障子をあけて、「見る物無い」って、障子を閉じました。今度は目が楽しめる庭に生まれ変わって、この頃はお客さんの皆が障子を開けておいています。

この部屋のテーマは長野のお蚕さんのルーツに合わせていますので、岡田さんが庭の中心に桑の木を植えてくれました。白実の桑です。どうやって育っていくか、楽しみです。他の植物と一緒に、段々と馴染んでくるでしょう。

岡田さん、新しい作品はご苦労様でした。

Every year, we make improvements on another section of garden here at Kamesei Ryokan. This year's new garden is the one for the "Matsukaze" guestroom.

Up until now, guests staying in Matsukaze have opened the shoji screens, seen a bare garden and concrete wall and have invariably closed the screens. Now thanks to our gardener, Okada-san, there is a beautiful garden for our guests to enjoy. Lately, the guests have been leaving the shoji screens open to be able to take in the new view.

The theme for this guestroom is based on the silk growing heritage of the area. In accordance with that theme, Okada-san planted a mulberry tree in the center. As the tree matures, it will produce white mulberries. I am looking forward to seeing that, as well as seeing how the other plants grow into their new location.

街道穴場:　麻績宿 A Secret Kaido Treasure in Omi

長野県に有名な街道の宿場はいくつかがある。南信の妻籠宿と東信の海野宿が整理して、江戸時代の風情が味わえて、観光地として成り立っている。

しかし、所々に観光に向かって綺麗に直されていない宿場もあります。江戸時代の面影を残しながら、普通な人たちが普通に生活している所。今日はその人地に訪ねてみました：善光寺街道の麻績宿。

麻績村は静かな小さな村、人口約３０００人。中心的に位置してある聖高原駅（JR篠ノ井線）から少し上がれば、松本と長野市をつなぐ善光寺街道の麻績宿があります。稲荷山宿（千曲市）と青柳宿（築北村）の間になる。

最近は街道巡りする方が増えてきている。その中で、麻績宿は交通便が比較的にいい：長野道の麻績ICから２～３分、聖高原駅から歩いて５～６分。

麻績宿は観光地図にあまり載っていない。しかし、言わせて頂けたら、観光臭くない所が良いです。麻績宿は歴史資料館っぽくなくて、実際の人達が実際に生活している。昔の建物は色々と不便でしょうけど、壊さないで大事に残して使っているのは偉いと思います。

麻績宿は中央道・長野道経由で戸倉上山田温泉にお越しになる場合、お勧めの寄り処。麻績ICで降りて、麻績宿をぶらぶらしてから国道４０３号で聖湖まで登って、下りる時は国道じゃなくて、猿ヶ馬場峠の細い道を通れば、善光寺街道の匂いをプンプンしながら歴史的な桑原地区に出ます。そこから亀清まで約１５分です。素晴らしいドライブコースになる。

Nagano Prefecture has its share of 'shukuba' post towns along the various 'kaido' roads that led to feudal Edo. Tsumago in southern Nagano and Unno-juku in eastern Nagano are two of the most well-restored, and hence popular with tourists.

Today I visited a lesser-known post town, Omi-juku, which lies on the old Zenkoji Kaido that connects Matsumoto and Nagano City. It is located in the village that bears its name, tiny, sleepy Omi village, population of a tad over 3,000 souls. Just up from Hijiri Kogen Station (JR Shinonoi Line) which is located pretty much in the center of the village is Omi-juku, a stretch of road with many buildings dating to the Edo period.

You won't find Omi-juku on many tourist maps. But it is just that sense of non-touristy-ness that makes it so appealing. It isn't a well-preserved history museum -- it's real houses lived in by real people, peole that put up with the lack of modern conveniences and lovingly use and maintain the original buildings.

It's also surprisingly convenient by either car (just 2-3 minutes from the Omi IC on the Nagano Expressway) or a simple 5-6 minute walk up from Hijiri Kogen station. So if you have the time and inkling to explore one of Nagano's lesser-known 'kaido' treasures, Omi-juku would make an excellent choice.

24日（日）のハロウィーンパーティーin戸倉上山田温泉の為のかぼちゃが来ました。隣の松代町の花見さんが毎年、ランタン作り用のかぼちゃを育ってくれる。亀清旅館の玄関にこのオレンジ色のかぼちゃをいっぱい飾って、一気にハロウィーンムードになりました。

The pumpkins for this Sunday's "Halloween Party in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen" have arrived. We are storing them here at Kamesei Ryokan's entrance until the big event. The Kenmi family in neighboring Matsushiro raise the pumpkins for us every year.

With all of these big, orange pumpkins on display, our inn has suddenly taken on a Halloween feeling!

プロバスケ来・信州の宣伝 PR for the new Pro Hoops Team Coming to Nagano

以前にも書きましたが、２０１１年のシーズンから長野にｂｊリーグのプロバスケのチームが出来る。ホームはこの戸倉上山田温泉になるそうです。そして、１０月３１日に戸倉の体育館で長野ｂｊ参入決定記念ゲームが行います。東京アパッチvs.浜松・東三河フィニックスの公式戦。

先日は長野ｂｊリーグ参入協議会の野本さんが宣伝のポスターなどを持って来てくれました。信濃毎日新聞の記者がちょうど来て、記念写真を撮ってくれて、この記事は今日の新聞で出ました。

プロの選手達に会ってみたい。私より背のでかい人がいるのかな？

As I previously mentioned, Nagano will be getting a new pro basketball team for the bj League's 2011 season. The home court will be here in Togura-Kamiyamada.

In commemoration of the new team, an exhibition game between current bj-League teams Tokyo Apache and Hamamatsu Pheonix will take place here in Togura on Sunday 31-October.

The other day, Nomoto-san from the group that is promoting Nagano's new team came by to drop off a poster. The local Shinano Mainichi newspaper reporter needed a promo picture, so he came to Kamesei to take the photo for the article in that came out in today's paper.

I am looking forward to seeing the pro players. I wonder if I'm taller than any of them...

ギターの音楽家、白柳さんの演奏 Shirayanagi-san's Acoustic Guitar Performance

亀清旅館のロビーのBGMでいくつかのCDの音楽が流れています。その１つはアコースティックギターの音楽家「白柳　淳」さんです。戸隠の鏡池や、千曲川の夜景などのテーマの歌なので、なんとなくこの信州の旅館の雰囲気に合うのです。

来月の１１月６日（土）の夕方に白柳さんが千曲市の「風雅」で演奏する予定です。白柳さんの音楽を生で聞くいいチャンスです。どうしても行けなかったら、我が宿のロビーで彼の音楽が流れていますのでいつでも聞きに来てください。

Here at Kamesei Ryokan, one of the CD's we play as our lobby's background music is by acoustic guitar artist Atsushi Shiroyanagi. He takes his inspiration for his songs by local spots like Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) at Togakushi and the night lights around the Chikuma River, so the songs' calming rythm seems to perfectly match our lobby.

Next month, on Saturday November 6th, Shiroyanagi-san will play at Fuga in the Inariyama neighborhood of Chikuma City. This is a great chance to hear him play live. If you can't make it, you can come and listen to his music in our lobby any time.

2年に一度の旅館青年部全国大会は来月、島根県の松江で行います。その下準備の為に、我々出向している皆が先週に現場で集まりました。会場準備や格好良い宿の見学の合間に少しぶらぶらできました。日本酒発生地と言われている松尾神社や日の入りの宍道湖、星の光の松江城など。

なんば経由で夜行バス・高速バスで節約な方法で行った。遠かったですが、その分の価値がありました！

先週は家族でドライブで埼玉へ行きました。亀清旅館にお泊りになるお客様で川越からの方は何故か多いです。「遊びにおいで」と皆が言います。どんな魅力があるだろうと気になっていました。そして、新聞で日本原風景街並みTop10で川越の小江戸が出ていました。さっそく、行ってみました。

第一印象は街並み及びお店の皆の笑顔は良かったけど、本通りの観光歩行者と車のバットルは激しかった事。歩行者天国にしなさい！って感じ。

実は、私の夢はこの戸倉上山田温泉が歩行者天国になる事。ダンプカーが本通りを通る限りで、「温泉街」と言うイメージは難しいと思います。

そう思いながら、川越の小江戸の散策を楽しみました。

Last week, our family went for a drive to Saitama Prefecture. A noticeable percentage of our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan seem to be from Kawagoe City. They invariably say we should take a trip to their town some day. So I was curious about what exactly is Kawagoe's attraction. Then I saw in the paper that the city's "Koedo" (Little Edo -- the historical name for Tokyo) district was picked as one of Japan's Top 10 Historical Street Scenes. So, off we went to check it out.

And our first impression? The 'kurazukuri' storehouse style architecture was cool, and the friendliness of the shopkeepers was welcoming, but the battle going on between the tourist-pedestrians and the cars & busses on the main street was crazy. If there's ever a street that needed to be made Pedestrian-only, it is here!

Actually, that is one of my dreams here for our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada -- make the town free of cars. As long as dump trucks are allowed to rumble down the main street, our town will never have a complete 'onsen town' feel.

Anyways, those were my thoughts as our family enjoyed walking around Kawagoe's Koedo.

天才の森繫　昇さんのロビーコンサート Noboru Morishige-san's lobby concert: A Musical Genius

夕べは亀清旅館のロビーが盛り上がっていました。クリスチャン音楽家の森繫　昇さんがコンサートを開催してくれました。ハワイに住んでいる森繫さんがぎーたーからビオラまで（途中でトランペットの音も聞こえた様な気がしたけど…）を弾いて、そして色んなジャンルの歌（沢山のオリジナルも）を歌いながら、他の宿泊者や近所の教会の方々に神様の事を歌ってくれました。お客様の感想を聞いたら、「森繫さんは天才だ！」と嬉しかったです。

以前はシカゴジャズ、インド系の三味線、おじさんロック、ボストンのオボエ、佐藤允彦さん（！）など、色んなコンサートが開催されました。お客様の喜びを見たら、もっと定期的に行うように計画すべきだな。

Last night our lobby was full of music, as Christian musician Noboru Morishige held a concert for our guests. People from the local church came, too, and enjoyed Morishige-san's musical talent as he played everything from guitar to viola (I thought I heard some trumpet, too!), and sang a wide variety of songs including mostly all-original ones. Throwing in bits of humor here and there, Morishige-san spread the love, God's Love.

I asked some of the guests their reactions.
"Morishige-san is a musical genius" seemed to be the consensus. Judging by how much everyone enjoyed the concert, it got me thinking that we should plan on concerts like this on a more regular basis. We have been pleased to host many concerts in the past, including some Chicago jazz, Indo-style shamisen, Boston Philharmonic oboe, some locals doing a rock jam session, and even Masahiko Satoh. What's next?!

今日の信濃毎日新聞にも載っていましたが、戸倉上山田温泉のハロウィーンパーティーがそろそろ行います。１０月２４日（日）午後２:３０からスタートの予定です。今年、私が実行委員長です。（そろそろ次のお化けにバトンタッチしたいな…）

ハロウィーンと言えば、子供達が仮装をして、近所で「トリックorトリート」（お菓子をくれないと悪戯するよ）って、お菓子をもらいに回ります。戸倉上山田温泉でお菓子を提供してくれる旅館やお店全部は５０件をそろいました。私が足を運んで、一軒一軒に顔を出して新規なら色々と説明してご協力を得って、前から協力してくれた所だったら「今年も宜しくお願いします！」という事で、温泉街を回りました。私にとっては町の皆とコミュニケーションをとるチャンスでもある。大体皆さんは子供の笑顔に貢献したがっているので、年々にこのお菓子提供の依頼が楽になっています。

２４日ハロウィーンパーティーに参加者を募集しております。詳しくはハロウィーンのHPへ。ボランティアーした方も是非、ご連絡をお願いします。

As per today's Nagano newspaper article, Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's annual Halloween Party will take place on Sunday October 24th. I've been busy making the rounds to the various inns and shops in town lining up cooperation for the trick-or-treating. So far about 50 shops have agreed to provide candy for the kids. Talking with each of the shop owners is a great chance for me to get to know so many people here, and it is encouraging to see everyone's cooperative spirit.

We are still accepting RSVP's for participants to the party, as well as looking for volunteers. For details, check out the website.

私ども亀清旅館が戸隠の大ファンです。何度も何度も足を運んだ中、沢山のの情報と経験を集まりました。我が宿で戸隠情報を喜んで提供できます。観光パンフは何種類もありますし、イベント情報、レストランやお店、忍者処（ちびっこ忍者村も忍法センターも）の割引券も扱っております。そして、穴場的の情報もたっぷりと。

ここで一つなアドバイスを紹介したい:　アクセスの件。
車で行くと、長野市内の善光寺さんから上がって行くパターンが人気です。バードラインもループラインも、景色が素晴らしい。行きは良い良いです。帰りが大変な訳。長野市街に下りてしまえば、ものすごく混みます。それを防ぐために、中社や奥社を通る県道３６号をそのまま真っ直ぐ行って、信濃町ICから上信越道に乗っちゃう。戸隠の裏から出るような形で、途中で黒姫山の景色も楽しめる。高速道路の更埴ICで降りたら、戸倉上山田温泉へスムーズで行ける。高速代がかかるし、距離的に遠回りですが、早いです。この間に通ったら、奥社の駐車所と亀清旅館の間は、１時間１０分でした。
