亀清旅館で毎年、少しずつ改善工事しています。ロビーに薪ストーブの設置、雑木林の中の露天風呂、ヒバの露天風呂、客室の庭のブロック塀を壊して木の塀の取り付け、等など。
旅館の経営者の永遠の悩みは限られた予算の中で、どこから改造をするかと。今年の分は決めました: ２ヶ所のトイレの改造工事。
一つは「松風」という離れ風の客室。今までのトイレは狭くて、なおかつ床が弱ってきていた。今度は広くて、明るいトイレ＋化粧スペースが出来ます。
もう一つは大広間の宴会場の奥のトイレ。今までの宴会のお客様はトイレへ行く度に階段を下りたり上ったりしなきゃいけなかった。今度は気楽で宴会場の直ぐ側のを使えます。
亀清旅館は直す所がまだまだ沢山ある。山ほどある。（沢「山」だから「山ほど」？すみません、アメリカ人ギャグでした。） でも、こうやって、少しずつ改造していきます。
Kamesei Ryokan has been making improvements to our inn every year. We put in a wood burning stove in the lobby, made 2 outdoor baths, replaced roof tiles, tore down concrete block walls and put up nice wooden fences, etc., etc.
As a ryokan proprietor, one of our constant headaches is how to decide what to fix next with our limited budget. This year's projects have been decided: 2 bathroom remodels.
The first is for one of our semi-detached guestrooms, 'Matsukaze'. It's old toilet was cramped and the floor was getting weaker. So we're remodelling it to make it brighter and more spacious, and adding a mini-powder room.
The second is for our main banquet room. Up until now, the banquet guests have had to walk down the stairs and back up again everytime they used the toilet. Now with this new toilet remodel, they'll be able to use one adjacent to the hall.
With an old inn like Kamesei, it's always a challenge to prioritize what needs fixing next. But every year we keep chipping away at the list, making improvements that will hopefully lead to a more enjoyable experience for our guests.

長野県の佐久市は面白い存在だと思う。高速のＩＣや新幹線の駅ができるまでは、「佐久バルーンフェスティバル」という熱気球祭りや、コスモス街道で少し知られました。食事文化で「佐久鯉」の名前はある程度知れれていました。しかし、観光の面では隣の小諸や軽井沢の方が注目を浴びていました。
高速のＩＣや新幹線の駅ができてからは、大手な映画館やショッピングモールも出来たし、「日本三大ケーキの町」と呼ばれて、かなり賑やかになりました。最近は佐久の新しい誇りも出ました:ご当地の味噌ラーメン「安養寺ラーメン」です。
正直って、映画館やモールはアメリカで十分行きました。ケーキも、恐らく女性の方が喜ぶのではないか。でも、この安養寺ラーメンは気になっていまして、先日は初めて食べてみました。佐久市の安養寺は「信州みその発祥の地」と決められたようです。本当かどうか知りませんが、ラーメンにうるさい私にはこのラーメンをまた食べたくなる味でした。
安養寺ラーメンを出している１６件のお店でスタンプラリーを行っています。２０１１年１月１０日まで実施している。１６店舗ともで食べたら、格好良いラーメンボールセットをもらえるので、頑張ってみてください。
Nagano Prefecture's Saku City has seen a rather interesting change take place. Until the freeway interchange and Shinkansen station were built, the city failed to attract much attention. Saku's annual hot air balloon festival and the 'Cosmos Kaido' highway lined with cosmos flowers garnered some seasonal interest, and 'Saku-goi' carp bread for eating was somewhat well-known. But as a whole, it seemed like Saku was just a place you pass through on the way to Komoro or Karuizawa, towns more interesting for sightseeing.
However, after the freeway exit and bullet train station were built, it's like the city really came alive. There's a new movie theater and huge shopping mall, and Saku was declared one of the Top 3 Towns for Sweets (?). Recently, Saku added another to its line of things to be proud of: Anyoji Ramen.
I personally have gone to all the movie theaters and malls that I've needed to back in the States, and I think sweets appeal to ladies more than guys. But Anyoji Ramen really caught my attention. Anyoji is the name of one of Saku's temples, and the area around it is said to be the birthplace of Shinshu (Nagano) Miso. I have no idea whether that's true or not, but the other day I tried Anyoji Ramen for the first time, and I can tell you that this finicky ramen eater gave the miso flavored noodle dish two thumbs up.
Right now, 16 different restaurants that serve Anyoji Ramen are doing a 'stamp rally'. If you eat ramen at all 16 places, you can get a cool ramen bowl set. The rally runs through January 31st, 2011, so get your chopsticks going!

Our new sign
亀清の新しい看板の設置はできました。仕上がりは申す櫛ありますが、どうやって光を照らすかまだ決まっていないけど、取り敢えず、設置してみました。手彫りの木の看板の作りは思ったより、大変でした。でも、亀清の新しい顔として、なかなかいいと思います。如何でしょうか？
Kamesei's new wood sign is in place. I still have to do a few more things to finish it up, and haven't figured out what to do yet with lighting. But the sign is finally in position. Carving the sign took quite a bit longer than I thought, but I'd say it turned out pretty nice. It's a great addition to Kamesei's facade. What do you think?
Used Bookstore Oiwake Colony
現代では江戸時代の建物の必要性はある？このインタネットの時代に本屋さんは要りますか？
江戸時代の建物の中の本屋さんはどうですか？それこそ、時代遅れじゃない？
夕べは家族で軽井沢の追分コロニーという「村の古本屋」に行きました。亀清旅館の庭師、岡田英人さんが本屋さんの裏の部屋に展示会を開催していました。「あけび、秋いろ、浅間山」という展示会で、河村目呂二の描いた追分の秋の俳画とスケッチに合わせて、岡田さんが生きた花苗を使って、会場を装飾しました。目呂二さんの絵で出たあけびなどの植物を使って、立体的に表現した様な。建物の趣に、目呂二さんの絵に、岡田さんの花の飾り、目がたっぷり楽しまれる空間でした。
本屋さんの方も、古本を見始まったら、切りがないぐらいにはまりました。私に日本建築の本を、子供達のクリスマスプレゼントに私が子供頃に読んだ本の日本語に訳した何冊（一つは村上春樹訳！）を、そして我が宿のライブラリィになんと１１４年前の本を買いました。１８９６年にウェストン氏の書いた「日本の山岳」。なかなか手に入れない本です。
目呂二ｘ永楽屋ガーデンの岡田さんのディスプレーは１１月３日で終わりましたが、古本屋の追分コロニーはずっとやっています。次の軽井沢の旅に寄ってみたらいかがですか？周辺に美味しいおそば屋さんもあるし、楽しいお出かけになるでしょう。
Are Edo-era building relevant in this day and age? And with the prevalence of the internet, is there any use for bookstores any more?
And what about a bookstore in an Edo-era building? Totally outdated?
Last night our family went for a drive to a bookstore called Oiwake Colony, located in the feudal-era post town of Oiwake in Karuizawa. Kamesei Ryokan's gardener, Okada-san had a display of his gardening prowess in a colloboration with Kawamura Meroji's paintings and sketches. Mejiro was active in the middle of the 20th century, and much of his artwork was inspired by Asama Mountain and the flora around Karuizawa. One of his favorite plants to draw was akebi (chocolate vine). Okada-san brought Meroji's drawings to life, with displays of plants depicted in the paintings including, of course, akebi. The ambience of the centuries-old architecture of the building along with Meroji's artwork and Okada-san's flower and plant displays was a treat for the eyes!
And then I wandered over to look at the used books side. Everywhere I looked, there was another treasure. I am reading some Beverly Cleary books to our kids now, and they had some translated into Japanese. And a Shel Silverstein book, also in Japanese, translated by one of my favorite Japanese authors, Murakami Haruki. How in the world could he put those poems into Japanese? Needless to say, I picked up several books for our kids' Christmas presents. And I picked up a book for Kamesei Ryokan's library, one written in 1896 -- Weston's seminal "The Japanese Alps".
If you take a trip to Karuizawa, I highly suggest stopping at Oiwake to browse at the bookstore, With a highly-regarded soba restaurant right across the street, it is easy to make an afternoon out of it.

朝風呂の良い所は、日の出の光での湯気の雰囲気が最高！今朝は亀清の広いお風呂内風呂と、手作りの露天風呂を見たら、湯気とアサヒの合わせで感動しました。
One of the cool things about taking an onsen bath in the morning is seeing the sunrays from the morning sun play with the steam coming off the baths. Here are some pictures from our larger indoor bath and our hand-made outdoor bath, with the steam lit up by the light of the sunrise.

今日は戸倉上山田の温泉作り運動関係で、市観光課の方と千曲市の中心街、屋代駅前に行きました。せっかくだから、駅舎の中で新しく出来た「ウェルカムステーション」に行ってみました。屋代周辺の案内をしながら、千曲市が開発しょうとしている「千曲ブランド」の商品も展示しています。千曲市で作られている食品８０点は認定されて、もっと広く千曲市の良さをアピールするのが目的。屋代駅のウェルカムステーションに行けば、認定された沢山の品物が見れます。その中で、最近に注目されている森地区「あんずの里」の杏が入っているチョコが１１月４日から販売される予定だそうです。期間限定でどうぞ、お楽しみに。
ちなみに、この亀清旅館で「千曲ブランド」認定品は何品をお料理で使っている（高村商店のお味噌や、島屋の甘露煮など）し、売店で認定された杏ジャム及びブルーベリージャムをあつかっています。私ども、なるべき千曲ブランドを応援しております。
Today I went with one of the guys from the city's Tourism Department to pay some visits in the Yashiro-area of our Chikuma City. We stopped in to see the new 'Welcome Station' inside Yashiro Station. Besides providing information on the Yashiro area to travellers, the Welcome Station also has on display many of the 80 items the city has officially registered as 'Chikuma Brand' products. The city is hoping these locally-made products will raise awareness of the great things our town has to offer.
Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we are doing our best to support the Chikuma Brand initiative. Our chef uses the miso and river fish that have been officially recognized, and we sell Chikuma Brand apricot and blueberry jam at our souvenir corner.
Seeing Opera for the first time, here in Ueda!
シアトルから長野に引っ越しした中で、もちろん良い事が多いですが、やはり、犠牲になった部分も多少あります。その一つは芝居です。シアトルに住んでいた時にの楽しみの一つは芝居を見に行く事だった。この亀清旅館の若旦那になってから、仕事の忙しさのせいもあるし、劇団が少ないとのもあるでしょう。
しかし、今日は見事に、地元の合唱団が上田で公演を開催しました。若女将が留守をしてくれて、私は子供達を連れて、見に行きました。今年の公演はオペラの「椿姫」でした。シアトルで芝居は何度も見ましたが、オペラは初めてでした。歌の美しさ及び仮装の輝かさに感動しました。
実は、この団体、信州国際音楽村合唱団VPGは、私が十数年前に上田市で英会話講師だったころ、私をアドプションしてくれたようで、私の日本の家族になってくれました。私にとっては思い出深い団体です。年一回の公演に出る程度でしか応援が出来なくて、申し訳ない。でも、凄く良かったです！我が子供達にもオペラを体験させて、嬉しかった！シアトルだったら、こんな機会がなかったでしょう。長野だからこそ、できました。
In moving from Seattle to Japan, a lot of good things have come out of it. There are a few things, however, that I had to give up. One of those is going to see plays. Back in Seattle, every once in a while I managed to go see one of the local groups perform. With my life now here as an innkeeper, I don't get such opportunities. Partially because of my work's schedule, but also because there are fewer acting groups here in Nagano.
Yesterday, though, one of the local chorus groups performed an opera, 'Camille'. Mari watched over the inn while I took our kids to go see it. The singing was so beautiful and the costumes were so glamorous -- we loved it!
Actually, this chorus group from Ueda called VPG has a special significance to me. When I lived here 16-some years ago teaching English, the group took me under its collective wing and made me part of their 'family'. I feel bad that after moving back here, I can only support them by attending their once-a-year performance. But thanks to them, I and my children got to experience our first opera, and here in Nagano as well! I doubt I'd have had the opportunity to see an opera back in Seattle.

Fuji Apples Lookin' Good
戸倉上山田温泉から車で５分がりんご畑のメッカです。昨日もりんご農園に顔を出しました。今年は特に「信濃スイート」という種類が美味しいです。名前通り、甘くておいしいリンゴです。
この写真はふじりんごです。色付きは良いと思いましたが、農家さんに聞いたらふじの収穫は１１月２０日ごろから始まるそうです。そのころはふじの味が一番付くそうです。それまでに、黄色「しなのゴールド」や深い赤の「秋映え」、そして今年に特に美味しい「しなのスイート」を楽しめます。
A quick 5-minute drive from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen will bring you to Kamiyamada's apple orchard paradise. Yesterday I stopped again to visit one of the orchards. This year, the 'Shinano Sweet' variety is especially delicious. Just at the name says, it is sweet variety of apples.
This picture is of a fuji apple tree. The coloring looked good to me, but when I asked the farmer, he said they won't start picking the fujis until around November 20th. Apparently that's when their taste will be at its fullest. So until then, we can enjoy varieties like the yellow 'Shinano Gold', deep red 'Akibae' and, this year's star, 'Shinano Sweet'.

Colorful Sunset behind Kamesei
明日は台風で週末がずっと雨になるそうですが、今晩は取り敢えず、良いお天気で、冠着山の裏で寝ねする太陽さんがこんな綺麗に雲に色を付けてくれました。台風前の今日のグランフィナーレ。
Tomorrow a typhoon is supposed to hit, bringing rainy weather for the whole weekend. But tonight, as the sun set behind Kamuriki Mountain, it lit up the clouds in these brilliant colors. Today's 'grand finale' before the typhoon comes.
