亀清旅館が一番長く付き合っているリンゴ農園が宮下農園です。昨日、宮下さんが今年の初のリンゴを持って来てくれました。夏は記録的に暑かったせいで、大きさは小さ目で日焼けされたりんごが出ています。でも、宮下さん達は良く選別しているので、お客さんに自慢が出来る美味しいリンゴの提供しています。

持って来てくれたのは「千秋」、「陽光」、青い色の「しなのゴールド」と、私の一番好きな、尼酸っぱい「紅玉」。

When apple season starts here in Kamiyamada, we get delighted by a plethora of varieties. Miyashita-san of Miyashita Orchard came by yesterday with some of the first apples from this year's crop. Two red varieties, "Senshu" and "Yoko", a golden one called "Shinano Gold", and my favorite, the deep red and wonderfully tart "Kogyoku".

This year's unusually warm summer resulted in smaller fruit sizes and a number of apples with sun damage. But the Miyashita's went through all their trees and took out the worst ones. So come and try apple picking, and enjoy the abundance of Kamiyamada's nature!

Miyashita Orchard is only 5 minutes away by car from Kamesei Ryokan. We gladly provide shuttle service.

市民交流＠運動会　Civic Exchange for the Better

話によると、戦後の日本は市民と市民の間の交流が少なくなって、社会のムードが全体的に暗かったと；それを回復する為に市民の交流が必要だと。その発想から「市民運動会」の動きが生まれたそうです。運動会を通じて市民の交流を行かせて、社会が元気になるという目標。言い換えれば、市民運動会が賑やかじゃなければ、社会が元気じゃない；つまり、運動会が社会のバロメーターだと。

との言われを信じて、私が今年の上山田温泉地区の運動会役員として務めさせて頂きました。仕事やプロジェクト、家族を犠牲にして、私には分かりつらくて、ヘビーな会議に出て、やる気のない市民から何とか参加者をそろって（まあ、相棒にほとんどお任せ）、前日の準備及び昨日の本番に朝早くからの作業、とにかく精神的にも身体的にも疲れました。

その分で、上山田の社会は少しでも元気になったかな？

After the War, Japan's civic spirit was pretty gloomy. Townspeople lost a lot of their interaction with each other. To turn the situation around, an idea was born: hold a town-wide sports tournament to bring people together and raise everyone's spirits. To this day, the town sports events continue to be a barometer of the people's spirits.

It was to that end that I agreed to take my turn as our neighborhood's appointed tournament organizer. I put aside work, projects and family to attend the meetings (an all new and challenging vocabulary for me), persuade fellow residents to participate, do all the site preparation the night before and morning of the day, and work as a judge during the event.

Hopefully we achieved in at least a small way to improve the town's spirit.

...どうやってその二つをつなげるか？

上高地の観光を研究している仲間と中央タクシーで働いている仲間が知恵を絞って、新しいタクシーツアーを開発するようになりました。タクシーが旅館にお迎えに行って、直接上高地まで載せて行く。お客さんが梓川・河童橋の周辺を散歩したり、ピクニックしたりゆっくりしてから、又タクシーに乗って旅館まで載せたり、途中の松本駅や長野駅で降ろしたりするツアーです。

昨日は試験的にモニターツアーが行われました。渋湯田中温泉に泊まっているアメリカ人二人と、この亀清旅館に泊まっていたドイツのお客さんが参加しました。山が好きなドイツ人がすごい笑顔で帰ってきました。

亀清旅館に泊まる外国人旅行者の中で、２，３泊の場合が多いです。一日は日帰りでお猿の温泉「地獄谷」へ行区として、他の日は戸隠へ行ったり、松本城へ行ったり、もしくは戸倉上山田温泉の周辺でレンタサイクルでうろうろしたり、温泉の上の山城「荒砥城」へ登ったり、大衆演劇や貯金箱館を見たりするというパターンが多いです。今度はこの楽な上高地オプショナル‐ツアーが出来たら嬉しいです。

...How to connect the two?

A buddy of mine researching Kamikochi and another buddy working for Chuo Taxi put their heads together and came up with a proposal: A taxi tour taking guests from their inns straight to Kamikochi. The guests get to spend the day walking the trails around Kappa-bashi bridge and Azusa River, stopping for a leisurely picnic lunch, and enjoying the high altitude clean air and mountain scenery. Then they ride the taxi back to their inns or to get dropped off at Matsumoto or Nagano Stations to take the train to their next destination.

Yesterday, Chuo Taxi did a trial run as a monitor tour. Two Americans staying in Shibu Yudanaka Onsen and a German staying here at Kamesei participated. The German, who has a passion for mountains, came back with the biggest smile! Apparently he really enjoyed seeing the Alps.

Many of our foreign guests here at Kamesei stay for 2 or 3 days. They often make a day trip to see the snow monkeys at Jigokudani. For their other days, more day trips to spiritual Togakushi Mountain (and the ninjas!) or Matsumoto Castle. Or they rent bicycles to explore the area, or walk up to the mountain castle above our town, or stick around and enjoy the geisha drag show, piggy bank museum, or any number of enjoyable activities.

A convenient optional tour to Kamikochi would be a fantastic addition!

昨日はJRの大型宣伝「信州デスティネーションキャンペーン」の始まりでした。でも、別な理由で戸倉上山田温泉の皆が盛り上がっていました:主の旅館「梅むら」の長男が結婚しました。当温泉の新たな若旦那・若女将誕生で、大きなお祝いでした。旅館の皆及び商店の皆が集まりまして、披露宴に芸者さんも来まして、豪華でした。

剛さん、真理子さん、ご結婚をおめでとうございます。

Yesterday was the kick-off of JR's huge Nagano Destination Campaign. However, everyone here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen was celebrating for a different reason. The oldest son of one our town's main ryokans, Umemura, got married. He and his new wife will both work at the inn and eventually be the next generation owners. All of the other ryokan people as well as shop owners in town gathered for the big event, which was highlighted by a spectacular dance by the geisha filled with colorful pageantry.

Congratulations on your special day, Tsuyoshi and Mariko.

2010.10.01: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

亀清旅館の離れ風の客室は庭付き（「マイガーデン」？）です。毎年、うちの庭師がそれぞれの庭を綺麗に作ってくれています。2年前は「千歳」と「末広」の前の坪庭を作ってくれて、去年は同じ千歳と末広のそれぞれのマイ庭を作りました。今度は今月に「松風」の庭を作る予定です。少しずつの改善です。
去年に作ってくれた千歳の杏の庭と末広の紅玉の庭の植物がだんだん馴染んできました。この間の朝に布団上げしに行ったら、こんなに綺麗な風情になっていました。
常連のお客様に良く言われます:「来る度にどこかの庭が新しくなっていて、楽しいです。」今度は松風の庭。私は楽しみにしています。

Kamesei Ryokan's 'Hanare-fu' detached guest rooms all have private gardens. We have been making improvements to them one by one over the past few years. Two years ago, our gardener remade the tsubo-niwa pocket gardens in front of 'Chitose' and 'Suehiro'. Last year he remade those two rooms' private gardens. Next, this month, he will remake the garden for 'Matsukaze'.
The new plants he put in last fall in Chitose and Suehiro have really adjusted well to their new locations. The other morning when I went to flip futons in Chitose, I was greeted by this lovely view of the flowers.
Many of our regular guests say every time they to Kamesei a new garden has been made, giving them something to look forward to with each trip. I am looking forward to Matsukaze's new garden, too!

地元の新聞に英語のマップで取材 English Map Featured in our Local Newspaper

New Map in the Local News

長野県の代表の新聞「信濃毎日」に7月に出来た英語のマップの取材が載りました。このグルメガイド・散歩地図の作成には、私がまとめ・編集の役割だったけど、20件のレストランと23件のお土産などのお店のご協力があった訳です。その皆様の努力のお蔭で出来たのでこうやって地元の新聞で認めらるのは有難い事です。
なおかつ、今回の取材の内容がマップの趣旨を一番伝われている。つまり、
＊外国人が日本に来る理由の中で、お料理が優先順位の上の方です。戸倉上山田温泉はこうやって20件のレストランもあるという事はそのニーズにしっかる対応が出来る事。
＊これだけグルメなレストランがそろっている温泉街は少ないです。戸倉上山田温泉の強みだと思います。

これからもこの温泉の良さをPRしていきたいと思っておりますので宜しくお願い致します。

Nagano's main newspaper, the Shinano Mainichi, had an article in yesterday's edition about the English Gourmet Guide / Walking Map I put together for our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamda. This article was the best so far -- it explained how unique our onsen town is in having such a variety of good restaurants which appeals to Japanese-cuisine-loving foreign travellers.

Here's hoping for more PR for all the wonderful things Togura Kamiyamda has to offer.

Still Alive!

戸倉上山田温泉のハロウィーンパーティー2010年は10月24日（日）に行います。2時から5時ごろまで、カラコロ足湯・能舞台のある「緑と水と潤いのある公園」で行う予定です。仮装コンテスト、トリックorトリート、お化け屋敷、かぼちゃランタン作り、ハロウィーンゲームなど、様々な楽しいイベントをやります。今年は千曲国際交流会が主催してくれて、私はまた実行委員長となるけど、以前に手伝ったBenさんが今年から全面的に出てくれるので、このポスターのデザインも彼の作品です。

ちなみに、今年のテーマは「ハロウィーンin戸倉上山田１３：まだ消えないぞ！」　と言うのは、今まではハロウィーンはそば祭りや荒砥城祭りと共同でやってきたが、その二つともなくなりました。残念ながら、ハロウィーンはそんなに簡単に消えないぞ！

The 2010 Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Halloween Party will be held on Sunday 24-October from 2pm to 5pm. There will be a costume contest, trick-or-treating, haunted house, pumpkin carving, Halloween games and more. We expect 200+ kids to join in on the fun.

This year, the Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc. is back to sponsor, and once again I am the head spook. Luckily we have Ben, a 2-time veteran, on board to help with planning. This poster is his creation.

The theme for this year is: "Halloween in Togura Kamiyamada 2010: Still Alive!" This refers to the event being held in conjunction with the Soba Festival and the Arato-Jo Castle festival, but both of those have been canceled. For better or worse, Halloween won't go away as easily!

上山田の波閉科（はべしな）神社の秋祭りはお相撲を大々的に開催している。千曲市の全ての神社の中で大人の相撲も子供の相撲もやっているのここだけだそうです。私も以前にお相撲に参加させて事があります。うちの子供達は毎年にすごく楽しみにしています。

今年の子供相撲のLynch家の結果はどうだったでしょうか？少し練習したお蔭か、三人とも勝ちました。二男は特にいい勝負でした。買ったら、「ケン君、良く出来た！練習して良かった！」と言ったら、周りが「練習したの？」と不思議な顔していました。「あたりまえ。だって、去年はあいつが女の子に負けちゃった」と説明しました。

子供達にきっといい思い出になったでしょう。子育てには上山田はやはりいいよね。

Besides the okagura lion dance which I wrote about yesterday, Habeshina Shrine's fall festival also features a fairly elaborate sumo wrestling tournament. It's the only shrine in the whole city that has both adult and kids sumo. I myself have done the full fundoshi and participated in years past. Our kids look forward to the tournament every year.

So, how did Andy, Kenny and Misaki do? All three of them won individual bouts! Perhaps it was because we practiced a bit ahead of time. We were especially proud of Kenny, who put up a very good fight. After he won, I yelled, "Good job Kenny! The practicing came in handy!" Several of the people around were surprised -- "You guys practiced?!" "Well, of course. Last year he got beat by a girl!"

Anyways, this is one of the benefits of raising our kids out here in Japan's countryside -- they get to experience sumo.

2010.09.27: 上山田お神楽 Kamiyamada Lion Dance

昨日は上山田の波閉科（はべしな）神社の秋祭りでした。

私は布団上げとお客さんのお会計が終わったら、作務衣から祭りの格好に変身して、お神楽の皆と一緒に参加しました。開会式の1回目の獅子舞から初めて、神社まで行列で進んで、それからは周辺や温泉街を回りました。夜に神社へ戻って、爆竹付きのグランドフィナーレの一舞。

長い一日でしたが、毎年の秋の楽しみ。

Yesterday was our local shrine, Habeshina Jinja's annual fall festival.

As soon as I got done with flipping futons and checking out the guests, I changed out of my samue work garb and put on my festival clothes. Then I ran and joined the Okagura lion dance troupe just in time for the opening dance. From there we went in a procession to the shrine for another dance, and then went around the neighborhood and the onsen town stopping at the houses of various elders as well as several of the ryokans for yet more dances. Then at night, we made it back up to the shrine for one last dance, a grand finale highlighted by firecrackers.

It was a long day, but a day I look forward to every fall.

2010.09.26: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

アーティスティックな従妹のMidoriさんが長男のアンディー君を連れて、川へ出かけました。何をするかなと思いました。戻ってきたら、ススキとか沢山の草や植物を持って来ていた。亀清旅館の客室やお風呂へ行く廊下にこんな綺麗な生け花を作ってくれました。Midoriさんの1－ポイントレッスンでアンディー君が優雅な、そして旬の雰囲気を出す生け花を。お花の力がすごいですね。

Midori, our artistic cousin, took our son Andy for a drive down to the river. I wondered what was in store. When they came back, they brought a bunch of pampas grass and other plant and grass clippings. Midori proceeded to give Andy an Ikebana lesson. I wish I could have watched -- I would love to learn how. Anyways, this is their elegant creation. Doesn't it give a wonderful sense of seasonality?
