我々上山田神楽保存会は昨日、戸倉上山田温泉にある「アットホーム」と言う老人ホームに呼ばれて、獅子舞をやりました。笑顔が広がれて、良かったです。
老人ホームに行く度に、人生の先の事をいつも考えてしまう。自分はどんな終わり方になるのかな？
まあ、月曜日の朝からその思い考えは良いとして、取り敢えずは生きている間に毎日毎日は良い結果を出していく事！
14-meter tall Sano Fudo Falls
戸倉上山田温泉から車で２０分ぐらい、千曲市桑原地区の上に佐野薬師と言うお寺があります。佐野薬師から佐野不動滝までの簡単な0.9ｋｍハイキングコースがあります。
昨日は子供達を連れて、雪が少し残っているこの遅い冬のちょっとしたハイキングしました。天気が良かったし、運動にもなるし、不動滝のマイナスイーオンを吸いたかったし、ちょうど良かったです。
桑原地区から「佐野薬師」への矢印を追いかけながら迷いながら何とか薬師と佐野池に着きました。善光寺平と遠くの雪かばっている菅平の眺めが綺麗でした。
佐野薬師からハイキングの道は軽トラ用な林道から始まりました。途中で狼の足跡しかない静かな細い道になりまして、沢を渡って松の林に入って、ちょっとした登り坂を超えたら3歳の美咲ちゃんにちょうどいい大きさの段が付いている下り坂を下りた。一番下まで行ったら、例の不動滝。
もしくは、冷の不動滝。夏ならこの高さ14ｍの滝から出る冷気が涼しくていいでしょう。冬は周りが凍っていて、幻な風情になっていました。

20 minutes by car from our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada is Chikuma City's Kuwabara district. In the hills above Kuwabara is a quaint little temple called Sano Yakushi, and it is situated by a tiny pond with a view that overlooks the Zenkoji Plain below and Sugadaira Mountains in the distance. A short, 0.9km hike from the temple takes you to the Sano Fudo Falls.
Yesterday, I went with our kids to go on the hike to the falls. We took advantage of a sunny late winter day and the hike was a perfect excuse to get out and stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air.
The path starts out as a road for those ubiquitous kei (light) pick up trucks and, sure enough, we soon passed some terraced rice fields. It always amazes me the extremes Japanese farmers go to for carving out farmland in the the wilderness. After passing the last fields, the path becomes a proper hiking trail. And a rather quiet one at that. We had only the paw prints of a fox to follow along the trail.
After crossing a glen, the trail enters a pine forest. After a short incline, there is a 3-way split: down for the waterfall, straight for a shrine to a forest deity, and up for some castle remains. The path down is equipped with Misaki-sized steps, so our 3-year old daughter had no problems.
At the bottom is what everyone comes to see: the 14-meter tall Sano Fudo Falls.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺のビッグイベント：森「あんずの里」のあんずまつり。２０１１年は第５６回となります。今年の祭りのマップは発行されましてので、行く前に亀清に寄ってお持ちになってください。
まつりの花見の分は４月２日から４月１６日までの予定です。そして、信濃毎日新聞の開花予想では、今年が平年並みの４月７日だそうです。
このブログにも最新情報を提供する予定ですが、あんずまつりの公式情報は千曲市観光協会のＨＰへ。
Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's signature Springtime event is the Apricot Festival in Mori district's Anzu no Sato (Apricot Village). This year marks the 56th running.
Dates for the 2011 flower viewing are from April 2nd to April 16th. Peak blooms are expected to by around April 7th according the Shinmai, our local newspaper.

Hello, Setsubunso
戸倉駅の裏の戸倉宿キティーパークaka天狗公園は節分草と言う小さな可愛いらしい花で有名です。と言うか、節分草のファンの中で有名。大体春に雪が解けてきたら咲いてくるのでどうなっているか、見に行ってきました。
２０１１年の戸倉の節分草の現状は？写真通り、落ち葉からちょっとだけ頭が出は暇っている。今週末の天気は温かくなる予想だが、来週からまた寒くなって雪が降るそうです。従って、今年の節分草の咲きは恐らく１，２週間後かな？
また見て、報告します。
節分草の周辺に「天狗の松」と言うでかい松があります。４００年前からだそうです。この３０メータの高さの木は千曲市の指定文化財になっています。伝説によると、地元の山で修験していた三人兄弟が川の洪水で分かれて、それぞれ別なの山で籠った。三人共が天狗になり、地元の人間を守るようになったと言う。
こんな神秘的な天狗の松を見れば、なんとなく信じるようになる。

Above Togura Station, there is a park called Togurajuku Kitty Park. It is better known as Tengu Park, and one thing it is famous for is a nearby grouping of cute little setsubunsou flowers (Eranthis pinnatifida). Well, at least it's famous amongst fans of setsubunsou. Such fans come from far and wide in mid March to photograph the delicate little blossoms.
Today, I went to see if they were in bloom yet, as the snow in the nearby mountains is starting to melt. I found a few just starting to poke their heads out from under the fallen leaves. But after warm weather this weekend, we're supposed to have another chilly front come through. So the setsubunsou are probably still a week or so from being in their full photogenic form.
Nearby the setsubunsou area is a massive pine tree called the Tengu no Matsu (pine). The 30 meter tall tree is supposedly over 400 years old. According to legend, three brothers that were hermits in a nearby mountain became separated in a flood. One took up residence above Togura and was so honored by the locals that upon death became a Tengu.
After seeing the imposing size of the pine tree, one is almost led to believe in the spiritual origins of the tree!
So, come and check out the elusive Setsubunsou flowers as well as our mystical Tengu no Matsu pine tree.

Happy Girls Day to all you young (and young at heart) ladies out there. Here is our daughter Misaki posing with the Hina Dolls displayed in Kamesei's lobby. I'd like to take this opportunity to pass on some information about a few of the area's many Hina Doll related events.
'Burari' Northern Nagano Hina Tour
This is an event involving various Hina Doll displays along the Nagano Dentetsu Railway from Yashiro Station to Yudanaka Station. Besides a 'stamp rally', the event features a travelling 'relay' display of new dolls by local popular doll artist Mayumi Takahashi. Relay dates and locations are as below:
1. Matsushiro Town

Original Hina Dolls made of local Matsushiro-yaki pottery will be featured.
2. Suzaka City
3/10-3/16 Kura-no-machi Kankou Koryu Center
To be held in conjunction with the Hina Doll Festival at Tanaka Honke Museum.

4. Chikuma City

Don't miss the 'Hina Ichi (Market)' festival. It takes place every year on March 31st and April 1st, and features clay dolls painted by local artists in a tradition that has been handed down over hundreds of years. People come from all over the country to add to their tsuchi-bina (clay doll) collections.

色んな意味で不思議だと思わない？更に面白いのは、小布施で行き会ったのは地獄谷のスノーモンキーのお蔭もあったけど、まあ、それはまた別のお話として…
そう。ロバートさんはゴート・チーズ・ガイとも呼ばれています。冬は白馬に来ているオーストラリアのスキー客を地獄谷野猿公苑へガイドしたり（その関係で彼が小布施にいはった）しているので、夏は芝刈りを困っているスキーグレンデで山羊を飼い、その草を食べさして、そのミルクからチーズを作っています。なかなか面白い人です。

at Obuse.
Isn't all of that just a bit bizarre? Anyways, Robert lives in Hakuba and during the winter he guides groups of Australian skiiers to the Jigokudani to see the snow monkeys (hence his being in Obuse). And in the summer, he helps out the ski resorts by using goats to keep the grass on the ski slopes cut. Then he makes cheese with the milk that the goats produce. All in all, a pretty fascinating undertaking.

Tobita-san's Pride and Joy Apple Juice
上山田のリンゴ農家、飛田さんの今年のりんごジュースが出来上がりました。購入しに行ってきましたが、りんご畑の空気は長野の中でもやっぱり違うね！と思いました。こういう美味しい空気の中で、美味しいリンゴが出来る訳。そして、科学的なものを一切入れないで作ったこのりんごジュースがまた美味しいのです。

This season's apple juice is now available. I went to Crown Farm to pick up some cases of Tobita-san's just-bottled apple juice.
I have to say, there is something different about the air in the apple orchards. You can just feel the freshness and cleanliness as you breathe it in. This must be one of the reasons apples taste so delicious. And hence, why the apple juice is so great, too.
We have Tobita-san's apple juice in 1 liter bottles on sale at our front desk here at Kamesei Ryokan for 600 yen each. How about taking home with you a bit of Nagano's natural goodness?

「お兄さん、ベンチを作って有難う！私たち年寄りにはうれしい事！」
近所のおばさんが亀清の前に寄って、言ってくれました。
そうです。またやってしまいました：ちょっとした町興し。以前に上山田温泉会社から４０歳のヒマラヤスギを頂きました。その気があまりにも伸びちゃって、近所に迷惑になっていたようです。倒された時は偶々見ましたので、我が薪ストーブの為にもらってきました。その後、杉や松は脂があって、煙突詰まるから良くないって事が分かった。そのもらってきた馬鹿でかい木はどうするか、ずっと悩んでいました。
そして、昨日は薪場を片付けていた時、ずくを出してチェーンソーを使って何とかその木をベンチにしました。亀清の裏に歩道の花壇の横に置いてみました。
そうすると、かなり近所の皆様の為になっているようです。通る皆様が少し休憩ができ、喜んでくれているようです。
小さなことですが、（実は、重くてでかい物でしたが）町興しはこういう所から始まるよね。
A little old lady passing by stopped to thank me for making a bench. "Old people like me need places to rest like that," she said.
That made me feel like all that effort that went into making the bench was worth it, thank goodness. You see, a few years ago I inherited a huge, 40-year old himalayan cedar log. Our town's onsen company had to cut down the tree 'cuz it had grown so big it had become a nuisance to the neighborhood. I happened to be there as it was getting cut down and, thinking of our wood burning stove, asked for the wood. After I managed to bring it to Kamesei, I found out that cedar and pine wood isn't good for stoves as their sap tends to plug up the chimneys.
So I've been stuck with this huge log. Finally, yesterday as I was cleaning up our wood pile, I decided it's now or never, and used the chain saw to carve it into a bench. Then I weeble-wobbled it over to the sidewalk next to the planter strip. It's probably the world's ugliest bench, but at least its making little old ladies happy.
One huge step for man, one little step for civic improvement. I like it.
