Late winter snow fall

Seasons

Snow on the 'tree of spring'

Looking around the garden, everywhere you look there are signs of spring starting to show up. The daffodils are starting to poke their heads out of the ground. The camelia trees are starting to bloom. In fact, the Chinese character for camelia, 'tsubaki', is written as 'spring tree', or the tree of spring.

Just when we were getting in the mood for spring, snow fell again. There's just something odd about seeing snow on the 'spring tree' blossoms.

The people around Sendai that lost their homes from the earthquake and tsunami now have to deal with this cold weather. I feel so sorry for them. The ryokan association here in Nagano is working with the prefectural governor to accept the displaced people. I hope we can provide shelter as soon as possible.

A Gas Station With Gas (?!)

This American’s Omotenashi

Only a week ago, this sign would have seemed redundant...

The gas tank of our 'K-truck' mini pick-up was empty so I went to go fill it up. But our neighborhood gas station was out of gas. After the earthquake, so many bought gas fearing a shortage that, hello, it created a shortage.

So I drove out to the main highway and there was a gas station with a sign that said they have gas. Apparently supplies are a bit spotty, but there is gas here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen area of Nagano. So if you want to get away to for a stay at an onsen, you don't have to worry about getting gas here.

Growing Delicious Apples Starts from the Soil

Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

Complicated soil

Since our inn has been quiet the last few days due to cancelations concerning the earthquake / tsunami / radiation problem, I've been making use of the time and have been gathering firewood for next winter.

This is a picture of the soil around the base of one of the trees in Tobita-san's apple orchard. His orchard is located about 5 minutes by car from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and he offered to give me the trimmings from his trees for firewood. After collecting the branches, he stopped to show me the soil around his trees. Looking closely, one can see the 4 things he added:

*Ground Oyster shell
Not only a source of calcium, but helps to balance the Ph of the naturally alkaline soil.

*Chicken manure
Better level of nitrogen than steer manure. And not raw, but fermented to bring out the beneficial effects.

*Used mushroom growing soil.
Mushrooms are raised in a soil formula containing ground wood and corn stalk. Once the mushrooms are harvested, the used soil is processed and apple growers spread it around their trees.

*Straw
As it breaks down into soil, it adds nutrition. Some of the straw is from old tatami mats. In fact, whenever we change out our futons here at Kamesei, we take the old ones to Tobita-san and put them at the base of his trees.

As you can see, apple tree soil is a very complicated matter. Tobita-san could just use chemical fertilizers to make it a lot simpler, but he prefers to use natural processes whenever possible. Hence the naturally great taste of his apples! (Note: Ignore the crab leg -- that was part of Tobita-san's dinner.)

View from the Train of the Majestic Japanese Alps

Reasons to Come to Nagano

The awe-inspiring Alps

Even with the earthquake / tsunami / nuclear radiation problems, life goes on. Rather than just wallowing in sadness and watching the gloomy news on TV all day, we gotta go on with the things that we need to do. Today, I had 3 important meetings to attend in Nagano City and Matsumoto City so I did a bunch of train travel and made some good progress. It's good I did take the train instead of driving -- gas is getting scarce due to people hoarding it.

On the train ride from Nagano Station to Matsumoto Station, there are some spectacular views of the Japanese Alps. Seeing the magnificent mountains somehow helped to lift my psyche.

Mother Nature's power is amazing. That same power that made these mountains moved the earth last week and created the tsunami. Awe and respect.

Simple Fun: Chausuyama Zoo

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Chausuyama Zoo's brochure and notepads that the zookeeper gave us.

Located in Nagano City's Shinonoi district, Chausuyama Zoo is a popular spot for families with kids as well as couples. It's a fairly large zoo and features such unique things to experience as giraffe-feeding. Its location on a hill above the city provides a fantastic view of the valley below as well as the Sugadaira mountains in the distance. And Chausuyama Zoo has some celebrity animals -- the lesser pandas.

In fact, last year the lesser pandas moved into a much more expanded home. Now you can see them up close and they have real trees they can climb.

The last couple of days, there has been nothing but distressing news on TV about the M7.9 earthquake in northeastern Japan. I was in the need for a change of pace, so after seeing off our guests this morning, I took our daughter to go to mass, followed by a trip to the Chausuyama zoo. We were awed by the height of the giraffes, cowered by the imposing presence of the lion, and bemused by the funny faces of the orangutans. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

A simple enjoyable afternoon.

Gazing into the faces of the giraffes and elephant, there was no trace of worry over the earthquake. But on the way out, we ran into the head zookeeper. I had to ask -- were the animals affected? He said the only ones were the chimpanzees and orangutans. The chimps got anxious and ran around their cages; the orangutans even put blankets over their heads. So the animals closest to us humans were traumatized.

Earthquake Update: A big one in Nagano this morning; No damage, but lots of cancelations...

This American’s Omotenashi

Howdy! Thanks for everone's e-mails, thoughts & prayers.

We felt the big, m8.9 earthquake yesterday afternoon. The ground shook and street lights swayed. I was driving some guests from the train station at the time. We're a long ways (about 450 kilometers) from Sendai which is nearby the epicenter, so the shaking wasn't that violent here. No damage, no books or dishes falling from shelves or anything. But the scary part was how long the quake lasted. Officially it was 2 minutes, but it seemed a lot longer than that.

Then this morning around 4am, another earthquake hit on the northern edge of our prefecture, Nagano. It was much more of a shocker, but fortunately no damage. It woke us all up, except our little Misaki (who turns 4 today by the way) who kept snoring through the whole thing. It was over pretty quickly but was followed by several aftershocks that kept us (again, except for Misaki) from going back to sleep.

Through it all, we've had no problems with gas, electricity, water, onsen water, or anything. Phone service has been sketchy, though.

So, no damage, no injuries. However, what hurts the most is all of our cancelations. We had 57 people booked for this Saturday night -- now we're down to 12.

For now, all we can do is say a prayer for those suffering loss from the earthquake and tsunami.

Civic Improvement Starts with Signs

This American’s Omotenashi

No signs!

As I previously mentioned, right now I am in the middle of making a hiking / cycling map for Togura Kamiyamada Onsen and Chikuma City. The publisher and I have been going around and verifying with our own eyes (and feet) the various courses. We want to make sure each course is entirely idiot-proof.

One thing I have come to realize in working on this is that even within Chikuma City, some districts have great road signs, and others simply stink.

Last weekend I took our kids for a hike to the Sano Fudo Falls above the Kuwabara district. It was my first time to that area, but thanks to the little roadside signs, I found the way through the confusing maze of narrow roads to the trailhead.

On the other hand, last night I went to verify the trailhead for Iwaido-san here in Kamiyamada. Not only have I climbed this mountain, but it's in my own 'backyard'. Even with that, I had a hard time finding the location. There wasn't a single sign.

It made me realize that civic improvement needs to start with the basics, like street signs!

Foodie

Rotisserie Chicken Served with a Smile

I heard from one of my Facebook friends about Anniversary #3 in Ueda City's Honmachi district. They serve rotisserie chicken. Do you know how long it's been since I've had rotisserie chicken? I used the excuse of an early birthday celebration for our daughter Misaki to take the family there.

It turns out this restaurant has one of only a dozen or so rotisserie roasters in the whole country. I was one pleased chicken eater. But even more memorable than the chicken was the friendliness of the waitstaff. I should have expected that. We had been to Anniversary #1 before, and besides the cool Lamborghini parked in the entrance, Shino-chan's flair cocktail demonstration was something I will never forget. That Anniversary group knows how to entertain.

Speaking of entertaining, there is a Honmachi Gokuroku ('Land of Happiness') Yokocho ('side street') restaurant guide featuring 37 different establishments, including Anniversary #3. What, you mean your town doesn't have a Land of Happiness side street? Well then, you'll just have to come to Ueda's.

Next month, the cherry trees at Ueda Castle will be in bloom. Come see them and then head over to Honmachi for some entertaining eats!

This is Cool Japan!

Reasons to Come to Nagano

After the recent ryokan junior association meeting at Shiga Kogen, we all spent the night in Shibu Yudanaka Onsen at Yorozuya, one of Nagano's (Japan's?) best ryokans.

This is a picture of the open air bath outside of Yorozuya's nationally renowned Momoyama bath. With the steam raising up and the andon lanterns -- this is Cool Japan!
