配管の溝掘り
Now I know how the guys who dug the Panama Canal must have felt. I have been digging a ditch to run the water pipes and electricity for the new family bath we are building here at Kamesei Ryokan. I couldn't have picked a hotter time of the year to be doing it.
Hopefully all the blood, sweat and tears will pay off and the soon-to-be-finished bath will be a success!
One last lion dance practice before the autumn festival
今晩は上山田のお神楽の皆が集まって、週一の練習をしました。これは秋祭り前の最後の練習でした。上山田温泉の大乗の神社、皮閉科神社の秋祭りは今年9月24日（土）です。
亀清旅館から歩いて約15分の神社です。午前中とお昼をかけて、相撲大会が開催されます。まずは大人相撲、そして12:30ぐらいからは子供相撲です。

今年は残念ながら、お相撲に呼ばれなかったです。従って、時間が取れる範囲でお神楽の皆さんと一緒に上山田を獅子舞で回ります。亀清旅館にも来る予定です。１５：００ごろ。宿泊の皆様のお祓いも。
Tonight, the Kamiyamada shishi-kagura group held our last weekly practice prior to the big fall festival at our local shrine, Habeshina Shrine. This year's festival will be held on September 24th, Saturday. There will be an amateur sumo wrestling contest, with adults around 10am and kids at 12:30pm.

For better or worse, I wasn't invited back this year. So instead, I will be free to join the Lion Dance group as we perform at various spots around town. We'll dance at Kamesei, too, at around 3pm. So our guests will get to be 'blessed' by the lion.
Wall framing
夏から作り始まって、10月完成目標としている家族風呂の工事は段々と進んでいます。今は小屋の壁を作っています。主には大工さんの村越さんだが、私も細かい所をやらせて頂いています。
段々とイメージが見えてきまして、完成を楽しみにしています。一日でも早くでお客様が入って頂けるように頑張ります!
Our project that we started this summer to build a family bath is progressing along smoothly. We are working hard to complete it by the end of October. Right now, we are putting the walls together for the structure that goes over the bath.
Our carpenter, Murakoshi-san, is of course doing most of the work, but I get to help out with some of the details. As our bath starts to take shape, I'm getting excited about the thought of our guests being able to enjoy it.

亀清旅館の客間「千歳」の外側の坪庭は二年前に庭師の岡田さんに作ってもらいました。代表の植物は森「あんずの里」記念で杏の木ですが、沢山の植物があります。私はそれぞれの花の名前をまだ勉強中です。
この間、お客さんに聞かれまして: 庭に今咲いている紫の花は何かと。私も前から気になっていました。岡田さんに聞いたら、その花は
青葉藤袴 （アオイフジバカマ）Eupatorium japonicum
岡田さんの作った庭は見る度に新しい花、新しい表現をしています。今までは亀清でこういう楽しみがなかった。今年は今に作っている家族風呂の庭を作ってもらう予定で、楽しみはまた一つ増えます。
In the streetside tsubo-niwa pocket garden for Kamesei Ryokan's "Chitose" guestroom, the main element is the apricot tree in honor of nearby Mori "Apricot Village". Our gardener, Okada-san, planted this garden 2 years ago.
Besides the apricot tree are lots of other curious plants and flowers. I am still learning all the names.
The other day, a guest asked what the purple flowers that are blooming now are. I had been wondering myself, so I called up Okada-san. They are:
Aobafujibakama, (Eupatorium japonicum)
The Japanese name means blue-leaf wisteria hakama (the long, pleated skirt worn over a man's formal kimono).
Hmm, sounds much better than the English name, a thoroughwort.
All of the gardens that Okada-san has built for us have surprises like this. Up until now, Kamesei's gardens have been severely lacking this element. And this year, Okada-san is scheduled to build the garden for our now under-construction family bath. I am sure there will be more surprises in store.

夕べはリベンジでもう一度姨捨に行ってみました。宿の仕事が終わってから千曲国際交流協会の事務所にてハロウィーンの実行打ち合わせして、夜11:30ぐらいになったけど帰りで中秋の名月が綺麗に光っていて、せっかくだったから姨捨の長楽寺に寄ってみました。
姨捨の棚田は「田毎の月」で有名です。その斜面の横に長楽寺と言うお寺さんがありまして、ここで茅葺屋根の月見堂もあり、芭蕉の「面影や、姥一人なく、月の友」句碑もあって、とにかく月見の中心スポットです。
私は軽トラで裏の方からあがった。車を止めて、「道しるべ」（ライトアップされた道）を通って、棚田の中心まで散策しました。
夜にお寺の裏から入って、中秋の月の光で秘密な道しるべをこそこそ歩いて、
何か忍者の気分になりました。
（ただ、忍者はきっと軽トラに乗らにだろうね…）
Last night I went back to Obasute to see the harvest moon over the famous terraced rice fields. It was after a meeting with the International Cultural Exchange Association planning for our upcoming Halloween event. Anyways, it was rather late, but the moon was out so I decided to stop by Choraku-ji, the moon viewing temple.
I drove my sub-sub-compact pick-up to the back side of the temple. There was a dimly lit path into the rice fields. The whole experience made my feel like a ninja.
Except ninjas probably don't drive mini pick-up trucks...

今の月様は中秋の名月という事で、夕べは姨捨の「田毎の月」の棚田に行ってみました。
残念ながら曇っていて、お月様がみえなかったです。しかし、姨捨駅のホームの投句箱の上にカマキリの昆虫がいました。善光寺平の夜景を眺めている様に見えた。
姨捨は昆虫にも楽しまれている様。
With the moon being in its Harvest Moon stage right now, last night I went to Obasute Station to view the nearby moon-reflecting Obasute terraced rice fields.
Unfortunately it was overcast, so no moon. Instead, I ran into this praying mantis on the Haiku Post box on the station's platform. He (she?) seemed to be enjoying the view of the night lights from the Zenkoji Plain down below.
Even funky insects seem to like Obasute!

亀清旅館の家族風呂工事が続いています。お風呂への通路の塀仕上がりが出来ました。
大工さんの村越さんは「真っ直ぐな線が嫌い」と言う発想から、竹を波の様に設置しました。
どうせい作るなら、楽しく作りたいよね。

The work on Kamesei Ryokan's family bath is proceeding along. I put the finishing touches on another section of the fence that leads to the bath.
Our carpenter Murakoshi-san guided the fence making. He hates straight lines, which inspired the wave-like pattern for the bamboo.
If ya gotta make it, might as well make it fun, eh?

This year's Obasute Moon Viewing Festival is taking place this weekend. Main events are as follows:

*Lighted Walk through the Rice Fields
Walk from Choraku-ji Temple through the rice fields at night, the path lit by footlights. 9th - 12th from 6:30 to 9pm.
*National Haiku Contest
Contest on the 11th from 11am to 4pm at the Tourism Hall in here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, with the awards ceremony to take place at Choraku-ji that morning at 10am. (Some guests that will be staying at Kamesei Ryokan have been selected -- I hope their haiku fare well.)
*Obasute Market
On the 11th from 10am to 2pm at the Obasute Tourism Hall. I hear the miso soup is really good!
*Niko Concert
The 12th from 5:45 to 6:45pm at Obasute Station. A 'niko' is a classical 2-string guitar.
*Choraku-ji Live
The 11th from 6 to 7:30pm at Choraku-ji.
There will be a free shuttle bus running from Yashiro Station on the Shinano Railway Line on the 11th from 8:30am to 5pm.
Onsen weather
この頃は青空の日々が続いています。昼間は温かくなりますが、ムシムシしていないから過ごしやすい;朝方夕方は大分涼しくなる。
温泉に入るのにちょうどいい。
9月の天気は温泉の旅に向いていますね。
Lately we've been blessed with beautiful blue skies. The daytime temperature gets pretty warm, but without the humidity we had in August. And the evenings and mornings cool down considerably.
The perfect temperature to enjoy a soak in an onsen.
September is just right for going on a trip to an onsen!

戸倉上山田中学校から生徒は何人かが社会見学の為に亀清旅館に来てくれます。
学生から見れば、「旅館の手伝い」と言うのはお風呂掃除とかのイメージでしょう。他の宿はそうかもしれないけど、亀清の場合はお風呂掃除じゃなくて、お風呂作りです。
この高橋さんと荻原君のお蔭で、今作っている家族風呂の庭の大きい塀が出来ました。片方から向こう側の植物が見え、もう片方からプライバシーがあるように、難しい塀でしたが、工夫しましたのでうまく出来ました。
高橋さん、荻原君、有難うございました!

Every year our local middle school, Togura Kamiyamada Chugakkou, sends us a few students for a workplace experience.
Most middle-schoolers propbably picture ryokan help as cleaning the onsen baths. Here at Kamesei, we have them help make an onsen bath. We are in the middle of building a family bath, so I had Ms. Takashi and Mr. Ogiwara make one of the fences for the bath's garden.
The fence needed to have specially positioned louvers so as the plants on the far side could be seen from the bath, but let the far side have privacy. We got a bit creative with the construction and managed to succeed in making a proper fence.
Ms. Takahashi and Master Ogiwara, thank you for your assistance. I hope you learned a bit about how flexible one must be in a workplace.
