Fragrant Fields
温泉街の近辺にこんな綺麗な場所あるんや！千曲川の側に広いラベンダーの畑は三つもあります。温泉のホテルの並びや戸隠がバックで、ラベンダーの特徴な紫の色に、そしてその良い香り。。。 ロマンチックですね。ここで、うちの長男がお母さんにラベンダーのブーケを。
So pretty of a place so close to our town?!?! 3 huge fields of beautiful, fragrant lavender on the banks of the Chikuma River, with the inns and hills of the town in the near background, and Togakushi Mtn. in the distance. How romantic! How about a lavender bouquet?
Jack o' Lantern
15日に温泉街で市のハロウィーン祭りが行われて、私が実行委員長として活躍して、地元の子供たち130人が仮装を付け、Trick or Treatでお菓子をもらいに回りました。子供達の笑顔で言えば大成功でした。余ったかぼちゃの約50個がうちの玄関の前で飾ってありますので見に来て下さい。
Our town's Halloween Party was held on the 15th. We had 130 costumed kids trick-or-treating around the spa's business district, with myself in charge of the organizing committee. There are about 50 pumpkins decorating the front of our inn - quite festive!
Wild Mushrooms
上山田温泉の近くの山にキノコはこんなに沢山の種類があるって知りませんでした。今日、観光会館で展示会が行われました。どれが毒か、どれが食べれるか、どれが食べたら死んでしまうぎらいに毒か、色々な説明がありました。尚且つ、キノコたっぷり入っているおうどんもありました。〔勿論、毒じゃない方のキノコ〕
信州：キノコ天国ですね！
I had no idea there are so many different varieties of wild mushrooms out there. Our town put on a display of dozens of varities, all picked yesterday in the nearby mountains. Mushroom picking, anyone?
History Display
お風呂場の前で本棚がおニューで置いてあり、中に温泉の歴史のオブジェを提示致しました。この温泉は１００年前の人達の苦労のお陰で、私達の苦労で１００年先の人の為に何を残すか？というテーマです。是非、お入りに。
A new addition to our inn: a showcase of historical objects from 100 years ago when the onsen founders created this onsen through their hard efforts. What will leave, through our efforts, for those 100 years from now?... is the theme. Please, come join us for a bath!
Organizing Committee Member
上山田温泉の夏祭りが15，16日に行われました。人数が足りなくて、この来たばかり、右も左も知らない外人が祭典委員になってしまい、｢わっしょい！わっしょい！｣というより、皆のサポートとなりました。迫力ある祭りで是非来年に見に来てください。
Kamiyamada Onsen's Summer Festival was held on the 15th and 16th. I was selected to be a member of the organizing committee, hence the official outfit. The festival has an amazing amount of energy -- come and check it out next year!
Nunobiki Temple
温泉から千曲川の上流を上がって、車で30分ぐらいな所に布引観音がある。｢牛に引かれて善光寺へ」の伝説の中の牛で引かれた場所です。近くの穴が善光寺とつないでいると言われて、善光寺で火事があった時にこの穴から煙が出たという話もあります。不思議な岩や面白い手彫りトンネルがあって、お寺が京都の清水寺の様に柱の上に出来て、とにかく是非行ってみるべきな所です。
30 mins. by car upriver from our town is Nunobiki Kannon temple, the location of several legends involving Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. Fascinating architecture, amazing rock formations, hand-dug tunnels - a must see!
Obasute Night View
温泉の近くの冠着山(姨捨山)からの夜景です。千曲川周辺とその隣の長野市の眺めが大変綺麗です。お客様の原口様に夜景を見せに連れて行きました折、本人から頂いた写真です。皆様も御覧になりたければ喜んでご案内いたします！

long, long walk
今日は第２５回目の牛に引かれて善光寺まいりが行いました。約３００人が戸倉上山田温泉から善光寺まで３０ｋｍ歩きました。この青い目の番頭が旅館組合青年部の一人としてＶｏｌｕｎｔｅｅｒ致しました。本当は参加者の面倒を見ながら３分の１を歩く予定でしたが、市長に開会式で｢この２ｍの平さんが先頭だ｣と言われまして、完歩しました。
Today was the 25th annual 30km walk from Kamiyamada to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, commemorating the legend of a housewife being led to the temple by a bull that caught her laundry in his horns.
ハヤ釣り
温泉の隣に流れている千曲川で４月からハヤ釣りが行ってる。今日はつけばに行って、その昔からの網打ちを見た。ハヤは川魚で味が強いけど試して食べてみたかったら、前もって言って頂いて、うちの板前がお料理で出します。付場も見たかったら喜んで案内します。
Fishing for 'haya' in In Chikuma River (the river that runs through our onsen town) starts every April. The fishing is done using the ancient techniques of building a berm in the middle of the river and using a net. Haya is an acquired taste, but come try it!
Easter Eggs
町の子供達の為にイースターエッグフェスティバルが行われました。この青い目の番頭が町と提供して計画しまして、無事に成功に終わりました。１２０人が参加して、新しい文化を楽しみました。
Happy Easter! We put on an Easter Egg Festival for the town, together with the Ryokan Assoc. and the town's Int'l Relations Assoc., and had 120 people hunt, decorate, and play games with eggs.
