安曇野市の穂高温泉郷にこんな剽軽な足湯があります:

「八面大王の足湯」

穂高のペンシオン街の中心にある子の足湯の真ん中に八つの鬼の顔が見下ろしている。地元の伝説の八面大王だそうです。

子供達を連れて、入ってみましたが、それぞれの面を楽しみながら、足湯にゆっくり入れました。お湯の温度は40℃ぐらいで、透明・無臭ですが、そのお面と森の中の位置で十分楽しめた。

In Azumino City's Hotaka Onsen district is this funky onsen footbath,

"8-Faced King" ('Hachimen Daiou')

Located in the middle of Hotaka Onsen's pension village, this footbath has 8 stone faces in the middle looking down on the people using the bath. It supposedly is related to a local legend regarding an 8-faced ogre.

I brought our kids to the footbath, and we enjoyed being amused by the faces as we soaked our feet. The temperature was a mild 40C, and the onsen water was clear and lacked any mineral smell, but we still enjoyed the funky faces and the foresty setting.

戸倉上山田温泉の周辺の地酒「姨捨正宗」のお兄さんが先ほど顔を出してくれました。今年の仕込みは11月中旬に無事に始まったと。そして、今年の酒米は特に美味しいから、今回の清酒は期待して良いそうです。

そして、毎年に一部の酒を「新酒」として、搾りたてで出しています。純米生原酒しぼりたてです。

飲んだ事はありますか?

この時期にしか味わえないフレッシュな香りでかなり、かなり美味しいです。

本数は限られていますので、今は予約受付中だそうです。恐らく、12月17日か18日当たりで出来るらしい。

早速、亀清旅館の分を注文しておきました。お正月のお客様に夕食の挨拶回りで私がお客様にふるまいするとはこの数年ンお習慣です。

For our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada, the main local sake brewery is Obasute Masamune. Their sales guy stopped by today, and advised that this year's brewing started as scheduled in mid-November, and with the rice crop being exceptionally high quality this year, they have high expectations for the final product.

At Obasute Masamune, before pasteurizing the sake they take a limited amount out and bottle it, something called "Shiboritate" (fresh-squeezed').

Have you ever had shiboritate sake? It's a wild, flavorful, unrefined sake unlike anything else -- a delicacy that can only be had this time of year.

Obasute Masamune is accepting reservations now, with the first bottling expected to take place around the 17th or 18th of December. I placed an order for Kamesei Ryokan. For our New Years guests, I go around at dinner time and pour everyone a glass of the shiboritate -- a special time to be had by all.

イチゴ狩り解禁だ！　Strawberry Picking Season is Back!

戸倉上山田温泉から車で約20分の所で、
あんずの里「アグリパーク」がありまして、
毎年の冬の楽しみは：

イチゴ狩り!

この冬は12月1日からアグリパークのイチゴ狩りが始まりました。外は温度が低くてもハウスの中が温かくて、
そして甘くて美味しいイチゴは食べ放題♪

我々欧米人にとって、イチゴって夏で畑で狩るものですが、冬のイチゴはまた良いですね！

込み合ったり、無くなったりの事がありますので、予約がお勧めです。詳しくは亀清旅館へどうぞ。

Strawberry Picking Season is here again. Located about 20 minutes from our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada is Agri Park. Picking berries in their greenhouses filled with strawberry plants is a wintertime favorite around here.

Back home in Seattle, strawberry picking is something you do out in a field in the summertime. Here, it's done in greenhouses in the winter. Which is great, 'cuz the warm greenhouses make a great break from the cold outside.

Mr. Maclean and his partner on top of Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen at the Arato-jo Fortress

欧米の大手旅行ガイドブック「Ｒｏｕｇｈ　Ｇｕｉｄｅ」の記者Neil Macleanさんが戸倉上山田温泉に来てくれました。我が温泉はまだLonely Planetやミシュランガイド等、海外のガイドブックに載らせて頂いていません。以前はミシュランの方に戸倉上山田の芸妓さん達を連れてＰＲした事がありましたが、結局はパスされました。

今回はNeilさんが戸倉上山田まで足を運んでくれたので、一生懸命で案内しておきました。夜は射的にも連れて行って、朝は自転車で温泉街を回りながら色々と歴史と伝説を説明しておいて、お昼はおしぼりうどんも食べさせました。

良い印象になったかと思います。次回のＲｏｕｇｈ　Ｇｕｉｄｅの出版は楽しみですね!とにかく、メニューに載っていないものは選ばれない；　こういうガイドブックに是非に戸倉上山田の魅力を載せて頂きたい♪

Rough Guides writer Neil Maclean and his partner came to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. I took them around and showed them the highlights of our onsen town, in the hopes that Rough Guides will consider including us in their next edition.

Presently, our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is not listed in any guidebooks from overseas. In the past, we'd taken some of our geisha and made a presentation to the Michelin Guide writer, but to no avail. This time, the Rough Guide writer came to our onsen, so I made sure to give him a thorough tour. At night, we even went and did shateki (corkgun target shooting), and the next morning we toured the town by bicycle, and finished up with a lunch of oshibori-udon, our local specialty of udon noodles with a spicy daikon radish.

Hopefully our town made a positive impression, and that we will be included in the Japan Rough Guides when the next edition comes out!

戸倉上山田温泉の冬のイルミネーションは年々に増えています。今年は私達旅館青年部と一緒に、商工青年部の協力してくれて、更に豪華のイルミネーションになりました。目玉は商工会が作ってくれた「ラブ・トンネル」。合わせて、今年のテーマは「フォル・イン・ラブ」です。

Togura Kamiyamada's winter illumination keeps getting better and better every year. This year, in addition to us ryokan junior association members, the Chamber of Commerce junior association helped out and even built a "Tunnel of Love". Hence, this year's illumination theme is "Fall in Love at Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen".

久しぶりの朝5時座禅＠開眼寺 5am Zazen at Kaigen-ji

Tranquil Kaigen-ji Temple

3日は5人（日本、オーストラリア、アメリカ）を連れて、千曲市桑原地区の開眼寺に座禅してきました。

朝5時に。

開眼寺の柴田さんは毎朝5時座禅をやっていまして、「いつでもどうぞ」と誘ってくれています。亀清旅館ではじゃらんネットとかで「若旦那と朝5時座禅」と言う宿泊プランを出していますが、

全然売れない。

まあ、朝5時と言うハードルが高いし。

（よく売れたら、逆に私の体がもつかどうか心配…）

個人的に座禅に興味があるけど、私も情けないで誰かが「連れてくれ」と言わない限りで、なかなか行かない。

最近は誰も「連れてくれ」と言ってくれていないせいで、
最近は座禅をしていない。

今回はお客さんの方から言ってきましたので、ズクを出して、寒い12月の朝5時にお出かけしてきました。

頭がすっきりしました!

座禅の後の柴田さんとのお茶タイムはまた哲学的なお話が出来、良い一日の始まりになりました。

今度はご一緒に行きませんか?

On the morning of the 3rd, I took 5 other guests (Japanese, Australian and American) to Kaigen-ji Temple on the other side of town for zazen meditation.

At 5am.

Shibata-san, the monk running Kaigen-ji, does zazen every morning at 5am, and he gives everyone a standing invitation to join.

We at Kamesei Ryokan even offer a stay plan including 5am Zazen Meditation.

It never gets any takers.

Perhaps one reason is getting up at 5am is too high of a hurdle.

(I'm actually glad it doesn't sell -- I doubt my body could take getting up every morning at 5am!)

Although I personally have a deep interest in meditation, I find myself being too lazy to go on my own. So it's only when a guest asks to be taken that I go.

And no guests have asked to be taken lately, so it's been a long time since I've gone.

But this cold December morning, I braved the chill and went with our guests to meditate.

It sure helped to clear my mind.

And the talk over tea with Shibata-san afterwards was an inspiring way to start the morning!

2日に八木沼氏の講演会は無事に亀清旅館で行われました。参加なされた13名＋長野市民新聞、有難うございました。研修会のサマリーは下記のようです。（内容の濃い研修会でしたが、サマリーは簡単です。）

戸倉上山田温泉を海外に売り込むことに当たって、

商品開発と同じような部分があります。つまり、

ヒト、モノ、コト が重要。

「カラコロ」と言いながら、音は下駄ではなく、車ばかり。
「千曲市」に雄大な千曲川だが、河川敷がただの駐車場になっている。
アーチや電灯の形がバラバラ、でんとうは電球色にすべき。

微妙に面白いところ:
小さなタバコ屋 (観光案内に？)
ネオン看板が半分に消えていること
不思議なコンクリート塀

「湯桶」提案

TDLでカチューシャを付けると、訪ねる人がより楽しめる
の様に、
浴衣＋下駄＋．．．湯桶

宿泊プランに湯桶を提供する。

客さんは「温泉街」を味わえる。
しょうてんのみなは湯桶で客さんが分かる。
持って帰ったら飾りに使える。

ハードル:
持ち歩きにくい => 特典提供で持ち歩きたくなる
持って帰りにくい => また持ってきたら得になり、リピーターにつなぐ。
お金がかかる => それ以上サービスになる

今年は長野の代表に新聞、信濃毎日新聞社の140周年ということで信州の魅力にはまって引っ越しして来た人々の紹介している「信州ぱらだいす宣言」シリーズが連続しています。
今日の記事は北信編で、アメリカから戸倉上山田に引っ越しした私が紹介して頂いております。

Nagano Prefecture's largest newspaper, Shinmai, is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. They are running a series of articles highlighting the people who have moved to this "Paradise".

Today's edition focuses on northern Nagano, and features a certain American who moved to onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada -- me! It talks about how I became fascinated with the area's mountains, culture and history and ... onsens!
