千曲市の自慢： 採れたてりんご
長野県は県としてりんご生産の二番目である。１０月と１１月のころ、どこへ行っても「りんご狩り」の看板が見えてきます。県内はどこのりんごが一番美味しいかと言う話をしたら、恐らくけんかになってしまうかもしれない。でも、この戸倉上山田の周辺の産地は美味しい方ではないかと思う。ことしの出来上がりが去年のに負けないぐらい良さそうだ。そして、一番美味しく食べる方法は：採れたて！
沢山のりんご農園でりんご狩りが出来る。りんご狩りは素晴らしいりんごの試食も出来るし、農家の人達に会う機会にもなる。りんごについては驚くほど沢山の種類がある。「津軽」が8月から始まるので夏のりんごと呼ばれている。8月末からゴルデンデリシだ。今年は１０月１日から「千秋」と甘酸っぱい「紅玉」が始まる予定だ。その後はでかい「陽光」が出て来る。定番の「ふじ」が10月末から始まる。(下記の表参考)...

戸倉上山田温泉の近くに全国的に話題になっている田毎の月の棚田は収穫の時期に入りました。いつも夜で姨捨の夜景ツアーで行きますけど今日はお昼に通りました。この棚田はやはり昼にも綺麗ですね。時代が忘れれるような雰囲気です。
Near our Togura Kamiyamada Onsen town are the terraced rice paddies of Obasute called 'Tagoto-no-Tsuki'. Normally I go there at night taking guests on a tour to see the night view, but today I passed through in the afternoon. The view during the day is also so spectacular. It's harvest time now, and seeing the rice put up to dry gives the hillside a timeless feel.
The Man Behind The 'Shrooms
秋というのはキノコの旬で、この戸倉上山田温泉の観光会館で毎年にキノコの展示会があります。天気にもよりますが、今年のは１０月４日の予定だそうです。キノコの種類はこんなに多いかといつも驚きます。そして、その全部を説明してくれる千野おじさんの知恵にもいつも驚きます。私にとっては千野さんの存在がとっても面白いです。三年前の温泉夏祭り、私がアメリカから来たばかりなのにいきなり祭典かかりになってしまいました。千野さんは毎年、祭りの裏管理みたいなのをしていて、祭りの準備で一緒になったお蔭で良く知るようになりました。千野さんのひょうきんなユーモア、私の外人さの平気な受け方、そして彼の知恵に感動しました。まあ、大変お世話になりました。今年のキノコの展示会が成功になるように。
Fall is the season for mushrooms, and every year our town has a Mushroom Display at the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Tourism Hall. This year's event, weather-depending, is scheduled for October 4th.
I'm always amazed at how many different types of mushrooms there are. One of the main guys who goes out to the surrounding hlls to collect all of them is Chino-san, and his knowledge of the mushrooms is also amazing.
When I first came from America, I was put on to the organizing committee for the town's summer festival. That's when I first got to know Chino-san, as he is the guy that helps out every year with the behind-the-scenes preparations. His charming sense of humor, and his acceptance of my 'gaijin' (foreign) - ness made a deep, positive impression on me. And his wisdom was also so impressive.
Well, I hope Chino-san and the mushroom display deal go well this year.
親戚のみどりさんが戸隠からこの綺麗なFlower arrangementを持って来てくれました。立派のお花、有難うございました！お客様もきっと喜ぶと思います。
Cousin Midori-san brought us back this flower arrangement from Togakushi Mountain, giving us a little of touch of Togakushi's Autumn here in Kamesei's lobby. I'm sure our guests will enjoy the wonderful flowers.

Okagura Performance at the Habeshina Shrine Fall Festival
私は今日の一日、法被を着ています。皮閉科神社の秋祭りなので朝の布団上げが終わってから、夜遅くまでという長い日です。今は途中で抜かしてもらって、今日のお客さんの布団引きの為に亀清旅館にちょっと戻っています。私は上山田お神楽保存会で獅子笛をやっている訳です。町中を歩いて、老人ホームや祭りの祭典取締役の家とかで、あちらこちらに披露してきました。お昼は神社の方に戻って、子供相撲も見えました。恐らくプローの相撲より楽しいかもしれない。
まあ、物凄くハードな一日ですが、他に日に変えたいと思わない。
Today is a long, long day. This morning, as soon as I was done flipping the futons of last night's guests, I changed into my Happi and joined the Okagura Lion Dance troupe for a day of walking all around town and performing as part of the Habeshina Shrine's Fall Festival. We performed at everything from a retirement home to somebody's brand new house. Midway through, we stopped back at the shrine, and got to see some of the kids sumo. Watching the kids wrestle has to be as fun as seeing the big pros. Anyways, I'm taking a quick break from the Okagura tour to come back to Kamesei and flip the futons for tonight's guests. Then it's back out for the 8:30pm grand finale at the Shrine. Like I said, this is a long day. But you know what? I wouldn't change it for anything.
Kids Sumo
斉藤さん、ご苦労様でした！知恵と機械を貸していただいて、助かりました！
女風呂の外の露天風呂つくりで次の出来事：５００リットルの灯油のタンクを持ち上げて、坊漏箱に設置する作業を今日、やりました。通常ならUNICのクレーン車を借りてやるけれど、隣の斉藤さんはブロックとタックルの機会なら出来ると言っていました。体験してみたかったので今日は二人で何とかやりました。ご年配の方の知恵（と機械！）がすごいなと感心しました。
The next step in making the outdoor bath for the Ladies' side was to somehow lift the 500 liter kerosene fuel tank into its containment box. Most people would probably rent a crane and do it, but our neighbor, Saitoh-san, said he has a block-and-tackle set up that would do the trick. So we got the machine into place, and managed to do it. I won't pretend it was easy (and there was certainly an element of it being better to be lucky than good!), but I feel a sense of achievement by doing it by our own physical power.
戸隠の紅葉の始まりStart of Togakushi's Fall Colors
これからはいつ休みを取れるか分かりませんから明日は長男の学校が休み（運動会の代わり）と言うことで、今日は思い切って、家族でまたドライブ！今日の目的地が：戸隠。
色が変わり始めた葉っぱを見て（紅葉がそろそろ！）
美味しいおそばを食べて（山口屋の忍者そばが決まり！）
子供たちが忍法センターで大騒ぎ（忍者屋敷は特に！）
最後でと学士化石博物館に始めて行きました。うんとご親切に案内してもらいました。何で２０００mぐらいの戸隠山に海水物の化石が合るけど、２０ｋｍ離れている大町に中国並みの恐竜の足跡があるかの謎などが分かりました。
戸隠は亀清旅館から車で約１時間半です。
With our son having a day off from school tomorrow (a post Sports Day holiday), Mari and I took the kids for yet another drive. Today's destination: Togakushi!
We saw the start of Togakushi's famed fall colors,
Ate delicious soba (Yamaguchi-ya's Ninja Soba is the best!)
Played at the Ninja Center (the kids especially love the ninja fun house)
and, for the first time, checked out the Togakushi Fossil Museum. There, we learned why there are sea creature fossils on 2000-meter Togakushi Mountain, yet 20 kilometers away in Omachi there are foot prints from dinosaurs that roamed China.
Togakushi is approx. 1.5 hours from Kamesei by car or by train/bus combination.

我が息子達の学校の運動会は今日、行いました。あまりにも固い行事です。昔からの音楽に子供たちの団体応援に。いつも思いますけど、旧ソ連っぽい感じしてしまいます。まあ、子供たちが喜んだのでそれが一番ですね。
Our sons had their school Sports Festival today. After seeing the regimental group cheering, and hearing the ancient march songs, I can't help but get a Cosmonatti feeling about the whole thing. But the kids had fun, and that's what's most important!

上左に花火がちょっこと見えます。
今日の姨捨夜景・伝説ツアーは得点付でした。偶然で長野市方面で花火が上がっていました。姨捨駅のホームから見えました。お客様も大喜びでした。
Tonight's Obasute Night View + Legends Tour had a special treat. Just by coincidence, we were able to see a fireworks display off in the distance. The guests were especially pleased.

ミニ体験 縄文飾り玉作り （ビーズと木の実が新しい）
さらしなの里歴史資料館aka古代体験パークakaレッツ縄文に町興しの事業の関係で寄りました。編みの先生の新井さんに色々とご親切に説明していただきました。この資料館の頑張っている気持ちが伝われました。概観のペンキは最近に綺麗に塗りなおされたし、中のミニ（身に？）体験のメニューが増えました。そして新井先生の作品、地元の草を編みで利用した行灯なども見せて頂きました。なおファンになりました。
注：２００８年の縄文祭りの予定が決まりました：１０月２６日（日）午前８時から午後２時半まで
Today I went to the Sarashina-no-Sato Ancient Experience Park, aka "Let's Jomon" for part of our Town Improvement project. I was impressed by how much effort the Park is putting into improvements. They recently re-painted the exterior, and on the inside they increased the number of mini "Taiken's" (little experiences) on their menu. And Arai-sensei showed me some of her weaving works, utilizing local grasses like they used back in the Jomon era.
Note: This year's Jomon Festival is October 26th (Sunday) from 8am to 2:30pm.
