来週、2つ目の露天風呂の本体が来ちゃうので回りをなるべく早目に完成しょうとしています。昨日はコンクリートブロックのの壁を白いセメントで綺麗に塗って、焼きすぎの化粧板を貼りました。アマチュアの割りに、まあまあ綺麗にできたと思いましたが、如何でしょうか？
Next week, the wood bath body is scheduled to arrive for our 2nd outdoor bath, so I'm scrambling to get the surrounding walls prepared. Yesterday I finished spreading white cement over the ugly block wall and put up burnt cedar planks (pre-burned! Home Center stores here carry the coolest stuff!). Not bad for an amateur.

動物のネズミの形している鼠大根。辛いぞ！
漬物の話は2つがあります。まずは近所の斉藤さんを見たら、沢山の大根を干す作業していました。聞いたら、地元の辛い「鼠大根」という種類なので毎年、奥さんが味付けをするそうです。本人は大好きなので１００ｋｇも買ってきて、準備をしているわけです。毎年、味付けがちょっと違うけど、それは1つな楽しみといっていました。鼠大根の沢庵はどんな味でしょうか？出か上がったら試食をお願いしておきました。
そして、遠い親戚の北山おじさんがやってきました。「おなを持ってきた」と言いはりました。最初は「女」だと思っていたので北山おばさんが来ているかなと。「おんなじゃなくて、おな！この辺で野沢菜はおなと言うよ。」あっ、なるほどど。10タブも持ってくれはった。これからはお客さんの漬物として出し始まります。
信州の冬は寒いでいやな部分があるけど、その文で漬物で恵まれています。
Two Tsukemono (Pickled/Preserved Veggies) stories.
Our neighbor Saito-san was spreading out a bunch of daikon radishes to dry in the winter sun. When I asked him about them, he said they were our local 'nezumi' radish, which packs a potent spicy punch. He prepares them every year for his wife to preserve, so they can have home-made takuwan (preserved daikon) all winter. Every year the taste comes out a little different, but that's something he says he looks forward to. This year he bought 100 kgs. That's a lot of takuwan! I made sure to ask him for a sample when they are finished making them.
Also today, our distant relative, Kitayama-san, showed up in his K-Truck and said he brought "ona". At first I thought he said "onna" which means woman, so I started looking out for his wife. (She's a real battle-axe of a woman.) But then he said "Not onna, ona -- 'round here we call nozawana (our local preserved vegetable specialty) ona." Ahh, I see. He had brought us 10 bundles of the aromatic nozawana that he flavored himself. This is what we serve to our guests with their meals.

亀清旅館のロビーの薪ストーブが25日に活躍します。この煙突からサンタさんが入る見込みです。それを向かって、ストーブの周りにストッキングとか飾りました。サンタさんのご来館は楽しみにしています！
The wood stove here in Kamesei's lobby will see some action on the 25th. That's when Santa will be coming down the chimney. We have our stockings set out, all ready to be stuffed with presents.
美咲ちゃんが富岡さんの駒に興味津々
戸倉上山田温泉に色んなキャラクターがいます。写真屋さんの富岡さんはその1人です。彼の撮る写真に載っている皆はいつも良い笑顔をしています。彼のギャグの面白さのお蔭でしょう。今日は駒をくれました。日本の伝統的なおもちゃですけど、私はやり方が良く分からなかった。そして、富岡さんが美咲ちゃんと私たちにやり方を見せてくれた。紐で持ち上げたり、手のひらでやったり、とっても上手でした。
Our onsen town here of Togura Kamiyamada is fortunate to be the home to many interesting characters. Our photographer, Tomioka-san, is one of them. The people in his portraits are always smiling -- mostly due to his funny antics. I(f you speak a bit of English or Spanish, Tomioka-san would only be too happy to practice on you.
Today he gave us a spinning top. He kindly demonstrated the traditional Japanese way, deftly using a string. He amazed Misaki and us by lifting the top up by the string and spinning it on the palm of his hand. Every onsen needs a funny photographer like Tomioka-san!

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's "Okami-kai" group of inn proprietesses has updated their Bura~ri walking map of the town. Over the past year, there have been so many new shops and attractions opened in our town, and now finally we have a proper map to best guide our guests.

Andy and Kenny and Misaki decorating our Christmas Tree
今年は日本に引越ししてからの4つ目のクリスマスです。毎年、本物のもみの木を探すのに苦労しました。今年はあきらめましたのでプラスチックなツリーを買ってしまいました。遠くから見れば本物に見えますが、なんとなくやはり物足りない。日本に負けました。まあ、取り敢えず、私達家族の集まってきたオーナメントを子供たちと飾りました。そうするともうちょっとツリーっぽくなってきました。色々なオーナメントがあるので12月いっぱいまでは亀清のロビーにありますので気楽で見に来てください。
This is our 4th Christmas season in Japan since moving. Every year, I struggled with trying to acquire a fir tree. This year, I gave up, and bought a plastic one. It actually looks fairly real from a distance, but it just isn't the same. Japan beat me.
Our family has gathered quite a collection of ornaments over the years, and the kids and I decorated the tree. With all the lights and ornaments, it started to look a little more 'real'.
We have lots of special ornaments. The tree will be up in our lobby until the end of December, so feel free to come and see it!

駅の「もてなしドーム」の日本的しかもモダンな木造のアーチで市の「ようこそ」の気持ちが伝われました。At Kanazawa Station, the "Motenashi Dome" with its traditional Japnese style, yet modern, wooden arch really expressed the city's welcoming attitude.
亀清旅館はJapanese Inn Groupのメンバーになってから始めての研究会に参加してきました。「欧米人から見た日本のインバウンド」の講演も頼まれました。インバウンドに関して、皆様が私の大先輩になるので非常に恥ずかしかったけれども、何とか好評で終わりました。
研究会は金沢で行われました。2014年に長野新幹線が金沢まで延ばされたら亀清から日帰りで行ける様になっちゃう。今回は電車で行きましたが、片道で5時間ぐらいかかりました。私にとっては15年ぶりの金沢でした。
インバウンド（海外からの旅行者）の7割は都会で3割だけが地方に行くそうです。欧米人の個人客の良く通りルートは成田イン、東京、マウント富士、京都、大阪アウトという「ゴールデンルート」です。大体2回目の来日から日本の田舎を見たくなるので松本、飛騨高山、金沢という裏ゴールデンルートが人気です。
という事で、金沢は欧米人の旅行者との歴史が割りと深いです。町を歩いたら、英字表記が充実していました。詳しい英語のパンフや地図も沢山ありました。とってもいい参考になりました。
１５年前に金沢に行った時に、兼六園と忍者寺位しか行かなかった。今回は駅から研究所への散歩や朝早くのぶらぶらで金沢の魅力をたっぷり味わいしました.
Kamesei Ryokan recently became a member of the Japanese Inn Group, and I got to go to my first Study Meeting. One of the talks was by Yours Truly, on what foreigners think about the current Inbound situation. I was embarrassed to lecture to my peers, being the newcomer as I am. But the talk went really well.
The meeting was held in Kanazawa, a major city on the Sea of Japan. In 2014, the Nagano Bullet Train will be extended to there, making it possible to do a day trip. This time, using normal trains, it took 5 hours one way.
It is said that 70% of Inound (tourists from overseas) see Tokyo and the big cities, and only 30% make it out to the countryside. Westerner individual travellers tend to fly into to Narita, see Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, and fly out from Osaka (the "Golden Route"). Usually on a second trip, they tend to want to see the countryside, hence Matsumoto, Takayama and Kanazawa (the "Ura (Backside) Golden Route"). So Kanazawa has a strong background with Western tourists. That was apparent by all the bilingual road signs.
This was my second time to Kanazawa. The first was 15 years ago, from which I have fond memories of classic Kenrokuen garden and the ninja temple. This time around, I stopped at a few sights on the walk to the meeting place as well as an early morning stroll. Kanazawa succeeded in enchanting me all over again.

近江町市場のにぎやかの事！長野に持って帰りたい！The Omi-Cho Market was so lively -- I wanted to take the whole market back to Nagano with me!
長町武家屋敷の夕方の雰囲気が最高！The Naga-Machi samurai house district at dusk was magical!
九谷焼きを気に入った：私のお茶碗の集まりに新しい一個 I liked the local Kudani Pottery so much I bought a new tea cup for my collection.

冬と言えば、お鍋！と私が思いますが、如何でしょうか？一昨年から冬限定で亀清旅館のお鍋プランを出させて頂いております。今までは野菜たっぷり寄せ鍋と信州味噌ベースの牛鍋という選択を出しておりまして、今年からはピリ辛ゴマベースの豚鍋も足しました。私は個人的に家族で暖かい鍋物を食べるのが大好きで、この楽しい食事は是非、お客様に提供したいと思っております。
When it comes to winter in Japan, one thing I always look forward to is eating 'Nabe'. What's 'nabe'? Literally, it means 'pot', so in this case it means a meal served in a hot pot in the center of the table, eaten family style. Sukiyaki and Shabu-Shabu are two popular versions. For the past two winters, here at Kamesei Ryokan we have been offering a special winter-only 'nabe' plan for our guests. Once again, this winter, we are happy to offer it.

千曲市の自慢：射的
温泉街のレトロを想像すれば、どういうイメージが出るでしょうか？「射的」はどうでしょうか？射的は昭和時代で終わっちゃったと思う方が多いそうですが、千曲市の戸倉上山田温泉に射的屋さんがまだまだ何件があります。友人が遊びに来てくれる時に、夜に出かけて、よく射的に連れて行きます。うちの子供達も大好きです。「今晩、射的に行こう！」とよく言ってきます。射的のおばさんに500百円を払って、コルクの玉は10個をもらって、カウンターの上から（子供たちはカウンターの上に乗れる！）、派手なおもちゃや小物を向かって打ってみます。何個を倒すかによって、プライズに当たります。招き猫や貯金箱、携帯電話のストラップ、ピカピカするおもちゃ（うちの子供達の一番好き）、など、色々当たれます。（プライズの数は倒した数より、おばさんの気分による場合が多いかもしれない。）子供はこういうゲームを割と楽しめるけれど、大人も十分楽しめます。特に、ピーるを一杯飲んでから（笑）。
射的は昭和レトロの夢だけではなくて、この戸倉上山田温泉で実現が出来ます。やった事のない方は是非、一度やってみて、お越しになってください。
When people imagine a "retro" onsen town in Japan, many people picture "shateki", a classic game of target shooting using a cork gun. Most people in Japan probably think shateki disappeared with the Showa era. Here in Togura Kamiyada Onsen, however, you can find several shateki shops.
Whenever friends come and visits, I often take them out to do shateki after dinner. Our kids love to go, too. They often ask me, "Can we go do shateki tonight?" How does it work? You plunk down 500 yen and the friendly old lady behind the counter gives you 10 cork 'bullets'. Then you aim at the colorful toys and trinkets that make up the targets. If you knock some down, you get to take home a prize. The number of prizes you get usually has more to do with what kind of mood the shateki lady is in rather than how many targets you knocked down. Kids enjoy playing the game, but to be honest, adults get a kick out of it, too. (Especially after having a beer or two.)
So, if you want to relive a Showa-era retro dream, come to Togura Kamiyada onsen and try your hand at shateki.
