2009.09.24: 青い目のおもてなし This American’s Omotenashi

昨日の波閉科神社の秋祭りの相撲の写真です。私は2回取りまして、一回は飛ばされました。やっぱり、子供のころから相撲をやってきた人はそれなりのテックニックがあるやなとくやしく思いました。しかし、また「に～し、タイラーや～ま」と。あっ、もう一回が出来るのか?よしっ、今回は負けないぞ!そして、写真のように、気合を入れて、布団引きの力をかけて、相手を飛ばしました。御幣を頂いて、「心」という字を手でやりました。

生まれてから始めてお相撲で勝ちました。

嬉しかったです。

お相撲の世界は物凄く奥深いですが、勝つとやはり嬉しいです。

Here is a picture of yesterday's Habeshina Shrine Autumn Festival sumo tournament. I was fortunate to get to wrestle twice. The first time I got thrown on my ass. Man, was I bummed out. (Pardon the pun...) I was just starting to feel bad about myself not having grown up doing sumo and getting to learn all the techniques. But then the announcer called, "Nishi (west side - my side!), Tyler-yama." Yeah! I got a second chance to wrestle. This time around, I wasn't going to lose. I put all my energy, as well as futon-flipping muscles, into it and tossed my opponent on his butt. Then I got to do the ritual ceremony of receiving the sacred "onbei" and writing "kokoro" (心) with my hand. My first ever victory at sumo.

It felt good. Real good!

Sumo is a rich sport steeped in tradition, ceremony and spirituality. But I have to say, it still feels just plain good to win at it!

上山田神楽保存会の一年間の中の一番重要な日：9月23の波閉科神社秋祭り。朝早くから晩遅くまで、一日中で神社の周辺や上山田の温泉街を回って所々で獅子舞をやります。私はお昼の相撲大会が終わってから(その結果及び写真は後日！）入りました。この写真は上山田温泉の中心にある水天宮でやった時です。我が美咲ちゃんが見に来てくれました。
町の仲間達が獅子笛を吹きながら町中を歩いて、新築お祝いや祭りの役員のご家族の祝い、それぞれの店の商売繁盛などの為に獅子舞・お祓いをやる。ここまで町の人々が町の神の行事で町のお店や人の為に・・・欧州ではどうか分かりませんが、アメリカではこういう伝統が無いです。感心しました。
そして、この米国人を地元の祭りに参加させて頂いて、嬉しいです。

The Kamiyamada Okagura Preservation Group's biggest event of the year is the Habeshina Shrine Fall Festival held September 23rd every year. From early in the morning until late at night, the Okagura crew walks around the town in a procession stopping to do the shi-shi dance in a variety of places, culminating in a torch-lit performance back at the shrine. The lion dance is done to celebrate everything from a new house or birth, to a business's prosperity.
I joined the procession after the morning's sumo wrestling (more on that later). Walking the town's streets performing the shi-shi dance of the town's local god, for the local people and businesses. I don't know about Europe, but in America I never saw anything like that tradition. I was honored to be able to participate.

2009.09.22: 温泉タウン戸倉上山田 Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

上山田の波閉科神社秋祭りが23日です。周辺の神社の秋祭りで子供相撲が良くありますが、波閉科神社は大人相撲もやっています。今年はシアトルからのベスト・フレンドのMattさんも私も取る様になりました。22日は下見で神社を見学しました。大丈夫かな？非常に不安ですが・・・

Kamiyamada's Habeshina Shrine holds its autumn festival every year on the 23rd of September. While many of the shrines in the area have kids sumo at these festivals, Habeshina has adult sumo, too. This year, my best friend from Seattle, Matt is here and he and I are planning on participating. We came to Habeshina to check out the sumo ring on the 22nd. Do we look like sumo wrestlers? I think we are going to be in big trouble...

2009.09.21: 長野に来る理由 Reasons to Come to Nagano

クッキーの材料の為に、戸隠にそば粉を買いに行ってきました。ついでに（どっちがついでかな？）忍法センターによって、子供達を遊ばしました。秋の青空に戸隠の立派な山に我が美咲ちゃん。戸隠高原の自然が気持ち良くて、「この為に長野に来ました」とさらに思いました。シルバーウィークでにぎやかだった戸隠から。

I took the kids for a drive to Togakushi to buy some soba flour for making more cookies. While there, we stopped at the ninja center for the kids (and their dad) to play. A fine autumn blue sky, majestic Togakushi Mountain, and our little Misaki. Once again, I was reminded of why it was I moved to Nagano. I love the great outdoors and the clean air of places like Togakushi.

赤提灯交換 Changing out the Red 'Chochin' Lanterns

2009.09.20: 日米関係Culture Shock

亀清旅館の前にどさん娘らーめんのお店があります。定期的に赤提灯を交換するので今日はその日でした。提灯だけを変えても、お店は新鮮な感じをします。

赤提灯。

日本の独特なイメージ。

始めて日本に来たころから、赤提灯の存在、意味が分かりました。見ると、落ち着きますよね。「あっ、ここで美味しいものを食べて、美味しい酒を飲めるのだ」と安心します。尚且つ、お店のおじさん・おばさん、そしてもしかしたら近所の方と交流も出来ると。「このあったかい雰囲気によこそ！」と。

色んな意味がその赤提灯に含まれています。

欧米ではないやな。赤提灯は日本の勝ち。

The Sapporo Dosanko Ramen shop across the street from Kamesei changes out their red 'chochin' lanterns on a regular basis. Today was one of those days. Even just changing the lanterns gives the shop a new, fresh look.

Ever since the first time I came to Japan, I have come to understand the significance of aka-chochin. It means you can get good food to eat and good sake to drink here. It indicates there's probably a friendly owner behind the counter and maybe regulars -- local people with whom you can talk and get to know. It says "You are welcome here." All of that meaning packed into a little lantern.

周りのがっこうでインフルエンザのせいで小学校の運動会が延期、又は中止になっているケースが多いです。上山田の南隣の小学校の運動会が中止になったら、親が文句を言ってきて、やる様にやったそうです。北隣の小学校のが平日に延期されたら、親が文句を言ってきて、週末に戻されたそうです。北風も南風もふいているのに、この上山田小学校でまだインフルエンザが発生していない。予定通り、19日に運動会が行いました。
私は評議委員として、VIP席で見れました。何で親がそんなに見たいか、分かってきました。学生の「一生懸命」の運動が見事です！

All around Kamiyamada, schools are canceling or delaying their yearly Athletics Tournaments ("Undokai") due to outbreaks of influenza. The school to our south canceled theirs, but parents complained so much it was reinstated. The school to the north rescheduled theirs to a later weekday, but when parents complained it was moved again to a weekend. Here in Kamiyamada, despite winds blowing from the north and south, we haven't had a single case of Swine Flu. So our tournament was held as scheduled on the 19th. I got to see it from a VIP seat, as I am on the school's advisory board. Getting to see the all-out efforts of the school kids up close made me understand why parent are so vehement about seeing the tournaments.

2009.09.18: 日米関係Culture Shock

どうでも良い事ですが、商工会が定期的に行っている健康診断に行ってきました。こちらに引越ししてから初めてでした。（本来なら毎年行くべきですが・・・）
身長の測り（最長２ｍの測り機械にぎりぎりは入れた！）から勤務時間の質問（旅館の場合は休みと言う休みがあまりない）、困った事がところどころにありましたが、何とか無事に出来ました。バリバリ元気の青い目の若旦那です！

Our local business bureau held a health check-up for area businesses today. I hadn't had one in a while (actually, ever since moving here 4 years ago!), so I headed on over and got weighed, measured (barely fit under the 2-meter measuring stick deal), pricked, scanned (including with some weird, low-budget sci-fi type of wire contraption) and what-not. The end result was that I am apparently a healthy American innkeeper in Japan.

新潟のキャレルと言う生活・暮らしの雑誌の「極上湯の宿１６軒」特集に亀清旅館の100年風呂が紹介されました。

嬉しいです。

本当に嬉しいです。

今までは雑誌や新聞、地元のテレビなどで数回の取材がありました。「青い目の若旦那」と言う話題で。

今回は青い目の若旦那より、この青い目の若旦那の造った露天風呂が話題です。そっちのほうに話題になって頂きたいです。その為に苦労して、時間をかけて、露天風呂を造りました。沢山の人々が上山田温泉のお湯を上山田の歴史、周辺の植物の雑木林とともに楽しんで頂ける為に造りました。この露天風呂が雑誌の取材で取り上がれて、嬉しいです。

This month's issue of Carrel, a lifestyle magazine from neighboring Niigata Prefecture, has a feature on 16 Top Class Onsen Inns. Kamesei's "100 Year Bath" outdoor bath was selected as one of the 16.

This makes me happy.

Very, very happy.

Over the past few years, Kamesei has been featured in a number of newspapers, magazines and local TV shows. However, most of the time it has been about me, the American innkeeper in Japan. This time, the article is not about the American innkeeper, it's about the outdoor onsen bath that the American innkeeper built by hand. That's what I built it for -- for guests to enjoy Kamiyamada's relaxing hot spring mineral water surrounded by a tree-filled garden with a historical theme to it. It makes me happy that Carrel Magazine picked our bath in their Top Onsens feature!

2016五輪：東京ならどういう影響？ What if: 2016 Summer Olympics in Tokyo?

2009.09.16: 活動 Activities

ジャパニーズ・イン・グループのメンバーとして東京2016を応援しています。

10月2日に2016年の夏五輪の場所が決められる予定です。東京かマドリッドかシカゴかリオ。東京になれば、外国から観光客が沢山来るようになるから宿泊施設として応援すべきですが、オバマ大統領の為にシカゴにもなって欲しいし、南米初としてリオになれば面白いし、マドリッドは今までホストした事がないのはおかしいし。微妙なところです。ただ、東京に関しては1つだけ気になっている所です。去年のこのごろの調査結果で日本の旅館の２７％は外国人を受けたくないそうです。オリンピックが来れば、外国人旅行者はどこで泊まるでしょうか？

October 2nd is going to be a big day in Japan. That's when the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics will be decided. Tokyo, Chicago, Rio and Madrid are the 4 finalists. While it would be great from a business standpoint if Tokyo were to be selected, Chicago has a lot going for it thanks to Pres. Obama, Rio would be a fine first South American host, and Madrid certainly deserves to win as much as any other great city. One thing bothers me, though, about Tokyo's bid. According to a survey released last year at this time, 27% of Japan's ryokans don't want to accept foreign guests. If Japan hosts the Olympics, where will all the foreigners stay?

2009.09.15: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

先日は歴史家の大谷さんが亀清にお越しになりました。色々と話している最中で、大谷さんは「えっ、この花はどうしたの?」と驚きました。ロビーに飾ってあった黄色い花の事。庭師の岡田さんが露天風呂の庭から持ってきた；伸びすぎていてtrimしたけど捨てるのはもったいないからロビーで飾ってくれた。と説明したら、「その余裕に育っているかい?その場所を見せてください」と言われました。
女郎花と言う花だそうです。うんと珍しいらしい。歴史家の大谷さんいわく、芭蕉が更級（この辺の昔の名前）に来たときに女郎花を見て騒いだそうです。大恥ずかしい事ですが、私はそれまでにぜんぜん認識していなかった。私がここに引越ししたのはそろそろ四年がたちます。その間、色々と一所懸命勉強しているけど、この女郎花の事のように、習わなければならないことがまだまだ多いですね。
The other day, local historian Otani-san came to Kamesei. As we talked, in the middle of the conversation he stopped and asked where we got the yellow flowers that were on display in our lobby. I explained that our gardener, Okada-san, had trimmed them from our outdoor bath's garden and since it would be a wast to throw them away, he had us put them in our lobby's flower vase. Otani-san was shocked -- "You mean, you have this flower growing in your outdoor bath's garden?!?!" Apparently, Patrinia scabiosifolia "Gold Lace" is a rarity from old times. In his historical studies, Otani-san had found that the haiku great, Bassho, had seen the flower in his travels to this area and had written about it. And here I've been pretty much oblivious to it.
It's been almost 4 years now since we moved here, and in that time I've been actively trying to learn as much as possible about the area. But instances like this Gold Lace flower just go to show how much more I have learn.
