キュートなアクセントの客室
普段はお客様の書いて頂く口コミに返事する立場ですが、昨日に泊まった舞浜のホテルに今度私から口コミを書く立場でした。その文章と写真：

家族でＴＤＬで夜遅くまで遊んでから疲れたままでインしたら、受付の方が「千曲市からですか？私はその近くの○○市出身です！）と、アットホームな感覚でホッとしました。館内は所々に可愛いアクセントがあって、特に子供の目線で。部屋が明るくて良かったし、朝は部屋の窓から富士山が見えて、嬉しかったです。もし部屋にタバコの匂いがなければ5点満点でした。

お正月後、我々が疲れて、子供達の学校が始まる前に家族でどこかへ一泊旅行します。個人的に私はほかの温泉旅館に泊まりたがっているが、今年は新幹線に乗って、東京へ出かけて、ディスニーランドとシーに行きました。もちろん、楽しい事は楽しいけど、ＴＤＬなりのおもてなしを見て、いい刺激になりました。
今回、一番感心したのはディスニーのマップと持ち歩いているＩフォンの地図を見比べれば、お客さんに見せる必要ない部分はどれだけうまく隠しているか、良く分かりました。ディスニーのマップによると、ＡワールドとＢワールドは隣に見えるけど、直接で行けずに、Ｃワールドを通らなきゃいけない。何でだろうと思って、ＩフォンのＧＰＳの地図を見て、ＡとＢの間は荷物の配達口になっている。運送トラックが見えないように、うまい具合に壁が立ています。
とか、もっと簡単に言えば、消火器は当然にあちらこちらにあるはずけど、一個も見えない。でも、このマイニングアトラクションの宝箱をよく見ると、「消火器」が書いてある。箱の反対側に覗いてみたら、赤い消火器が確かに入っています。
何でも何でもお客さんの目線を考えて、見せたい物をしっかり見せて、見せる必要のない物をうまく隠す。ディスニーは本当に偉い！
この間、亀清旅館の渡り廊下の横にある洗濯機を隠すために竹の塀を作りました。客室の暖房機、コンクリートブロック塀、そしてもちろん消火器等など、お客さんに見せる必要ない部分は隠す方法をどんどん考えないと駄目ですね。
まあ、ヘビーな事を考えすぎないで、せっかく世界一楽しい所なので写真を提供します。
Every year, in our exhaustion following the New Years crunch and before the kids go back to school, we take a couple of days off to go on a mini vacation ourselves. I personally like to go stay at a different onsen ryokan, but this year our family decided to take the shinkansen bullet train in to Tokyo and go to Disneyland and Disney Sea. Of course, we had a lot of fun, but it was great to see what a good job of 'omotenashi' Disney does.
The thing that impressed me the most this time was walking around using the official Disney map, and comparing it with the GPS map on my I-Phone made me realize how well Disney hides things they don't want the guests to see. World A looked like it was adjacent to World B, but you had to go through World C to get there. Looking on the I-Phone map, I realized there was a major delivery route between A and B. So as to make sure guests didn't see the trucks going in and out, there was a clever wall to block the view.
Or, on an even simpler level, you know there have to be fire extinguishers throughout the park, but walking around, you never see even one. But in one mining-themed attraction, there was a treasure box which upon closer inspection was labeled 'fire extinguisher'. Peeking behind the box revealed it was open with a bright red extinguisher inside.
Again, Disney shows guests what is meant to be seen, and does a great job of putting things that don't need to be seen out of sight.
Here at Kamesei Ryokan this past year, I built a bamboo fence to conceal the washing machine next to our watari-roka passage. But there are the heaters in the rooms, all the concrete block fences, and, of course, the fire extinguishers and what not that should be concealed. This trip to Disney has inspired me to work harder at thinking about what guests see and what they don't need to see.
But enough heavy, philosophical meanderings. Disney is the funnest place on Earth for goodness sake, so here are some of our fun pictures.

Togura Gym
戸倉上山田温泉の近辺に戸倉総合体育館があります。今年の暮れから日本プルバスケットボールjbリーグの新しいチーム、長野代表のチームのホームコートになる予定です。温泉とプロバスケで盛り上がるのは楽しみにしています。
昨日はうちの長男のフットサルの練習が戸倉体育館で行われた。その送迎で私がコートに入ってみました。プロバスケの試合はどんな様子になるか、色々と想像しました。
戸倉上山田温泉はプロバスケ、サイクリング、ハイキング、鮎釣り、色々とスポーツメッカになるつつ。「スポーツ温泉」と呼んでください。
Close to our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada is the Togura General Gymnasium. Starting at the end of this year, there will be a new pro basketball team from Nagano, and it will use the Togura Gym as its home court. I'm excited to think about the possibilities of linking our onsen with pro hoops.
Yesterday, our oldest son had his futsal soccer practice in the gym. When I went to pick him up, I took a peek inside. I tried to imagine what it will be like with a pro basketball game taking place.
Our onsen town, with the pro basketball, all the great cycling and hiking, the fishing in the Chikuma River, is shaping up to be a real "sports onsen"!

Andy's turn to pound mochi
毎年のお正月に、戸倉上山田温泉の銀座通り商店街が餅つき大会を開催します。お店の皆さん、近所の子供連れご家族、数十人が集まります。今年のイベントは子供達が更に増えた様な気がしました。うちのＡｎｄｙ君とＫｅｎ君も、二人のパパももちろん、餅つきに参加しました。（餅つきをやらないと、年が始まらないって感じ。）
出来立てのお餅はまた美味しい事！
銀座通り商店街の皆様、ご苦労様でした。美味しく頂きました。なおかつ、皆さんの顔を見れて、皆さんとお話が出来て、大変良かったです。

戸倉上山田温泉は色んな顔がある。
活発的に自慢なお料理を出しているレストラン、
信州と千曲市に特化した、ここでしか買えない品物の商店、
大衆演劇から貯金箱まで、色んな劇場や資料館・博物館、
川辺の公園や千曲川サイクリングコース、周辺の山の緑、
ステンドグラスやプリザーブフラワーなど、十数件の思い出になる体験
と、もちろん我々旅館や日帰りの温泉施設。
そして、もう一つな顔は戸倉上山田温泉の芸者さん達。今日はお正月の挨拶で亀清旅館に顔を出してくれました。ちょうどその時にアメリカ大使館で働いているお客さんがロビーに行って、彼が芸者さんの姿で驚いて、カメラを直ぐ出して、「メアイテークアピクチャー？」と喜んで写真を撮りました。
彼もそうですし、芸者さんと会ってみたい方、興味深い方が多くて、ただ、宴会で呼ぶような機会がなかなか無い訳です。そこで、この頃に新しいお店が出来ました。亀清旅館から歩いて5分のところに：

私はこの戸倉上山田温泉の繁華街の遊びがあまりしないので飲み屋さんのお勧めは基本的にノータッチです。しかし、「えんや」は男性と女性の暑グループで行ってみた時、楽しく盛り上がりました。えんやなら、お勧めが出来ます。
Our onsen town, Togura-Kamiyamada, has so many different faces.
The wide variety of restaurants with chefs always working hard to make innovative new dishes.
The local family-run shops making unique, local products.
The many entertainment spots, from a Geisha drag show theater to a piggy bank museum.
The natural scenic beauty of the Chikuma River and surrounding mountains.
The activites and cultural experiences that are offered, like stained glass making and preserved flower decorating.
And, of course, the various ryokans and onsen bathhouses.
Then, perhaps the most beautiful face is that of the Geisha ladies.
One of our town's geisha houses stopped by our inn for their annual New Years greeting. Having so many beautiful ladies dressed up in full kimono in our lobby at once was like a happy blossoming of color.
Just by chance, one of our guests, an American working at the Tokyo Embassy, was in our lobby when the geisha arrived. He was so pleasantly surprised to see them, and got his camera out right away to take pictures.
As with many of our guests, this guest from the Embassy is fascinated with geisha culture, but isn't in a position to put on a banquet and arrange for geisha entertainment. However, there is good news: Some of the geisha have started a karaoke bar where they work after the banquets. So it's possible to go for drinks and sing karaoke with the friendly presence of kimono-clad geisha.

I normally do not patronize the karaoke bars very frequently. Hence, I avoid making recommendations. However, I recently went to Enya with a small group of guys and ladies, and was pleased to find that the kimono-clad geisha presence adds a classy yet fun, bubbly touch to the karaoke pub atmosphere. Highly recommended!
New Years Greeting
「お正月だから」
と前島おじさんが答えました。我が社長が「どうしてまた素敵な着物を着ているのですか？」と聞いていました。
ロビーは花を飾り、
玄関に松を飾り、
親戚や近所の子供達にお年玉を上げたり、
全てはお正月のため。
外から来た私が段々と日本のお正月の重要性が分かってきています。アメリカでは、お正月は飲んだり、アメフットボールをテレビで見たり、誰も守らない新年の抱負で終わっちゃう。
こっちは格好良いおじさんが格好良い着物を着て、挨拶しにくださる。

As my experience with New Years in Japan grows, my appreciation of the profoundness of this holiday here also grows. Back in the States, it was just an excuse to drink and watch football, and make resolution no one ever kept.

皆様、明けましておめでとうございます。亀清旅館では2010年はお陰様で、沢山の良いお客様と出会いが出来たし、リピーターになって頂いたお客様も増えました。「感謝、感謝、感謝」としか思えません。
今年の亀清旅館の年賀状はその感謝の気持ちを込めて、割引券という形にさせて頂きました。
沢山の宿が「ポイントプログラム」や「リピーター専用なサービス」をやっているらしいです。
ポイントをためたり管理するのがややこしい様に思うし、初めてのお客様に部分的なおもてなしをするのはどうかと思うし、でも、お越しになって頂く感謝はお伝えたいと思いました。その結果は単純な割引クーポンです。2010年にお泊りになったお客様の皆さんに割引券付きの年賀状を出す様にしました。

Happy New Year, Everyone! Thanks to our guests, in 2010 we met so many new wonderful people. In addition, we were honored to host more and more guests as repeaters. We are so thankful for everyone's support.
As a token of our appreciation, we included a coupon with our 'nengajyo' year-end greeting card that we sent to all of our guests from 2010. Other hotels offer point programs, or special service for frequent travellers. Keeping track of and redeeming points can be such a hassle, and I can't help but wonder why inns don't give 100% service to all guests, new or repeat.
Here at Kamesei, we decided to keep things simple and add the coupon to the nengajyo's.
In addition to the coupon, the cards have pictures of the various new remodels and changes we made at Kamesei over the past year.

今日は大掃除の日でした。亀清旅館のロビーや、我々の住んでいる部屋、所々の隅々まで。
毎日にお掃除をやれば、こんなに大袈裟の大掃除はしなくて済むのに・・・ でも、毎日はこうやって梯子を上って、やる訳に行かないな。
ちなみに、何で日本はこんなに寒い時に大掃除をするのがどうしても不思議に思ってしまう。アメリカは春先で大掃除をするという習慣。冬の間はずっと暗くて、寒くて、窓を明かない状況。春になれば、久しぶりに窓を開けて、綺麗な風や太陽の光が入って… そうすると、「ウォ、部屋がこんなに汚いっけ？」と、自然に掃除したくなる。スプリングクリーニング（春のお掃除）と言います。
と、この寒い12月31日に大掃除をしながら、思い出しました。まあ、お正月のお客様が喜ぶためにだと思えば、頑張りたくなります。
Here at Kamesei Ryokan, we spent the last day of the year doing a major cleaning. Of course, if we cleaned all these spots on a daily basis, we wouldn't be stuck doing with this heavy cleaning day. On the other hand, it's not practical to get the ladder out every day...
As I was shivering from the late December cold, I kept pondering why was it that people in Japan typically do this once-a-year major cleaning during the winter? In the States, the tradition is "Spring Cleaning". After a dark, cold winter, when the first spring breeze comes, everyone opens up their windows to let in the air and sunlight -- and realizes how dusty their homes are. Hence a natural desire to clean.
That's what I was thinking of as I shivered while up on the ladder dusting our lobby's hard-to-reach places.

話によると、エンボカは普通な軽井沢な別荘として生まれました。普通というか、軽井沢並みでかなり豪華な別荘。オーナーが趣味でハムを作りだしたら、段々と本格的になって、別荘をレストランに切り返ったそうです。手作りハムを生かしてお料理を出しながら、口コミで軽井沢のトップレベルなレストランになりました。どんどんと人気になって、予約が必要となった現状になりました。
入口に入ったら、左は燃えている木を使っているピザオーブン、受付に豚の足がかかっている。
とにかく、ここはドミノピザじゃない。
飲み物だって、ベルギ産のビールは29種類も。
半端じゃありません。
軽井沢への出掛の際、お洒落のピザ屋さん「エンボカ」へどうぞ。
A pizza joint you need reservations for?
In Karuizawa, even this is conceivable. Namely, En Boca.
According to legend (?), En Boca started out life as a summer home. The owner dabbled in making home-made ham. His hobby became more and more serious, to the point that he changed his rather luxurious summer home into a pizza restaurant featuring his ham. Word of mouth took over, and En Boca has become one of the most popular restaurants in Karuizawa, so much so that reservations have become a necessity.
This is a pizza joint with class. And it hits you especially as you walk in the door, with the wood burning pizza oven to the left, and the prosciutto and other hams by the leg hanging by the reception desk.
This is not Dominos Pizza.
And then there are the beverages: 29 varieties of Belgian beer.
Even back in craft beer loving Seattle, I've never seen anything like that.
So if you make a trip to Karuizawa and are in the mood for very gourmet pizza, make sure to stop at En Boca.

軽井沢: 信州のリゾートタウン。信州らしい自然がありながら、都会っぽい買い物やレストランがある。東京に住んでいる方々がコンクリートから離れて、軽井沢の緑を見に、綺麗な空気を吸いに行く訳だが、我々長野に住んでいる人達が軽井沢の楽しいお店や美味しいレストランを楽しむのです。
先日は家族で軽井沢に訪ねて、そのグルメなお店は二つに行ってみました。ここで紹介したいと思います。
ブレックファースト＆カフェ「カボットコーヴ」
米国東海岸で生活した経験のあるオーナー達がアメリカの朝食に魅力されたようです。その良さを軽井沢の別荘地に取り入れて、森の中のかわいいキャビンで米国らしい朝食を提供しています。ブルーベリーペカンパンケーキや、ふわふわのスクランブルエッグ等のアメリカ風のお料理に、コーヒーにうるさい私の妻が美味しく飲んだコーヒー。お店の雰囲気は薪ストーブもあるし、落ち着かせるインテリアーです。今回はクリスマス前という事で、綺麗なツリーも飾ってありました。デッキもあるので周りの森を眺めて外の空気を吸いながら食べることもできる。
最初は「アメリカ風の朝食」って聞いたら、疑っていました。私自身がアメ人だし、家でブルーベリー・ペカンパンケーキを時々焼きます。どちらかというと、パンケーキのプロでございます。この厳しい私にはキャボットコーヴさんのパンケーキが納得しました。納得というより、大喜びでした。
キャボットコーヴは場所的に、車じゃないと不便ですからお車でのお出かけの時にお勧めです。そのままでもう一時間ぐらい走れば、戸倉上山田温泉・亀清旅館にも行けますので、是非お出かけ下さい。
Karuizawa is Nagano's resort town. While it has as much natural beauty as the rest of the prefecture, Karuizawa also has the upscale shopping and cuisine one would find in Tokyo. People from Tokyo go to Karuizawa to get out of the concrete jungle and breathe clean, fresh air; people from other areas of Nagano go for the fun shops and the gourmet restaurants. We all go for the waterfalls, forests, and other natural attractions.
Right before Christmas, our family went for a drive to Karuizawa and had the pleasure of experiencing 2 outstanding restaurants, which I would like to share here.
'Breakfast and Cafe' Cabot Cove
Nestled in a wooded setting in one of Karuizawa's summer home neighborhoods, Cabot Cove is a restaurant specializing in American-style breakfast food. The owners apparently lived in the East Coast of the States, where they picked up a liking for American style brunch cuisine. They've recreated that cooking here in this cabin in the woods in Karuizawa.
Cabot Cove serves up fluffy scramble egg dishes and such grill offerings as blueberry pecan pancakes all in a cozy interior complete with wood burning stove. There is also a patio for guests who like to feel fresh air on their cheeks as they munch on their breakfast.
To be honest, when I first heard about a restaurant serving American style breakfast, I was a bit dubious. I myself am an American, and have grown up eating quite a bit of American-style breakfasts. I've even been known to grill up a pretty mean brunch myself, including blueberry pecan pancakes. So I consider myself somewhat of a pro when it comes to American breakfast cuisine. And I am here to tell you that Cabot Cove does American breakfasts proud. I certainly plan on going back.
