亀清旅館の貸切家族風呂の庭工事が段々と進んできました。岩設置が終わって、今度は木の植えつき。まずは５ｍ蔵の高さのしなの木。「信州」の名前の由来の木です。

庭師の岡田さんが設置している所です。庭の出来上がりは楽しみだな。

Construction of Kamesei Ryokan's family bath is progressing smoothly. Right now we are working on the garden. Or, I should say, our gardener Okada-san is. He won't let me touch it -- this is going to be a professional garden!

The boulders have been moved into place, and now Okada-san is working on the plants. First the trees, and the first tree is this 5-meter tall Shinano tree. Nagano's historical name is "Shinano", from this tree.

I can't wait to see the finished product!

Falling for Fall Ramen at Kameya

戸倉上山田尾の線で新しいラーメン屋さんが生まれました：　信州小麦ラーメン亀屋。　

実はこのラーメン屋さんは元々ありましたが、旧名「麺’ｓテーブル亀屋」を面の材料にあまりにもこだわっていて、お店の名前にしました。信州小麦粉ももちろんそうだけど、この千曲市の「夢」小麦粉や珍しい「幻」小麦粉も使ったラーメンを出しています。

なおかつ、旬のメニューもあります。今回は秋野菜味噌ラーメンを頂きました。旬の味だし、ヘルシーな野菜たっぷり入っていて、大変良かったです。

ラーメン替えになるさらしなラーメンもあるし、とにかく独特なラーメン屋さんです。戸倉上山田温泉の宝物の一つ。

Togura Kamiyamada Onsen has a new ramen shop: Shinshu (Nagano) Flour Ramen Kameya.

Actually, the shop has been around a while under the name Men (noodle) 's Table Kameya. But the owner is so proud of using only local wheat flour for his ramen that he included that in the name of his shop.

Kameya also has a seasonal menu, and this time I ate the Fall Veggies Miso Ramen.

Our onsen town Togura Kamiyamada is fortunate to have such a distinct ramen shop!

Rice mill stepping stone -- rude or re-use?

亀清旅館の貸切家族風呂の工事がまた進んでいます。お風呂への通路は飛び石で作ってみたいと思いました。造っている途中の写真です。

砕石所で石を選んだ時にお米を擂る石もあって、それも拾って通路に使ってみました。食べ物に使うものは足で踏むのはどうかと思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれないけど、捨てられた物を再利用する方がそのものに対して親切のではないかと思いますが、如何でしょうか?

The building of Kamesei Ryokan's family bath is continuing. Right now I am working on the approach to the bath, a path made of stepping stones.

When I went to the gravel company to pick out the stones, there were some round carved stones used to mill rice. I thought it would be interesting to use them for the path, too. Some people may think it's rude to use a food-related thing for people to step on. But I think re-using something that has been thrown away is a better use of materials. What do you think?

New York? Tokyo? No, Peking!

私は１８年前に一度北京に訪ねました。その時は高速道路に羊がうろうろ、天安門広場の地下鉄の駅に農民がキャンプしたり、「遅れた」のようなイメージを受けました。

今回はブランド品のお店やデパート、渋谷やタイムズ・スクウェアと変わらない様な最新な街並みを見れて、驚きました。

チャイナタウンらしいところもあって（観光客用?住民は来るかな?）、ホテル街の裏に１８年と変わらない街並みもあって、今日の北京は複雑な顔をしています。

北京だけに慣れるのに、足は何回運べばいいだろう?そして、中国という国は北京だけじゃない。

私は知りたいのは海外旅行する中国人のマインドです。亀清旅館及び長野県には喜んで頂けるでしょうか?

北京で「Understanding the Chinese Mind」という本を買った。作家の Boye Lafayette De Menteさんは中国以外に日本も韓国も研究していて、欧州にも米国にも比較した本である。「アジアは形式バレ、欧米はカジュアル。特にアメリカ。アメリカは世界一カジュアルの国だ」と書いてあった。中国の事を勉強するつもりで、自分の事の勉強になってしまいました。（私もカジュアル過ぎるのかなと心配になってしまいました。。。）

When I travelled to Peking 18 years ago, the things images that stuck in my mind were of the taxi from the airport stopping to let sheep cross the freeway, and of the peasants (?) from the countryside camping in the subway station. And a lot of grey ferro-concrete buildings.

This time around, during my sales trip there with the Nagano junior ryokan assocation, I saw a very different Peking. The shopping streets and hotel districts were indistinguishable from Shibuya or Times Square!

Besides the brand name shops and department stores, there was a touristy 'China Town' (do locals even go there?) and a block behind our hotel was a grey street more like I encountered 18 years ago.

Peking has a very complicated facade, and that is only the tip of the iceburg that is China. I got the feeling that it would take many trips here to get accustomed to China.

While in Peking, I bought a book called Understanding the Chinese Mind by Boye Lafayette De Mente. My hope was to try to get a feel of what Chinese travellers may be interested in and if Kamesei Ryokan and/or Nagano would meet their needs. Besides China, the author also mentions similarities with Korea and Japan, while comparing all to and amongst Europe and America. One phrase shocked me: "Asians tend to be more formal than Westerners, with Americans being the most casual in the world." I went to Peking to study about the Chinese, and ended up learning about myself.

(And wondering if maybe I'm too casual?!?!)

長野県旅館青年部:　飛び出すジャパン！　Nagano Ryokan Junior Assoc.: Beyond Japan!

私は長野県旅館青年部のインバウンド委員会の委員長なのでこの2年間で一度ぐらいは日本から出て、海外で営業をする目標がありました。長野県の観光課と打ち合わせをしたら、「11月に県知事はトップセールズで北京へ行くから一緒に行ったら?」と誘ってくれました。

という事で、私と青年部全部で5人で成田から北京へ飛んで、商談会に参加しました。私はアジア人、特に中国人の観光について何を求めているかについて非常に興味があるので、とってもいい機会でした。

現地の通訳者とガイドと色々と話したら、中国人の観光に対するマインドは少し見えてきました。コピーじゃないブランド品の買い物からロッククライミングまで、ニーズはさまさまですが、長野県は喜ばれているパーツが沢山あるのではないかと思いました。買い物には軽井沢、ロッククライミングには地元の冠着山とか。

あと旅行会社やガイドたちの立場（収入）も考える事によって、商品を売る魅力も大事だと分かりました。もちろん、商品も魅力的じゃないと駄目。

北京へ飛び出したのは良い勉強、良い刺激になりました!

As the leader of the Inbound committee for Nagano Prefecture's Junior Ryokan Association, one of our goals for this 2 year term is to do some PR for Nagano overseas. Talking with the Prefecture's Tourism Department, we were invited to accompany the Governor on his sales trip to Peking.

Myself and four other junior innkeepers took advantage of the opportunity and flew to Peking to take part in a sales conference. The translator and guide provided lots of advice on what Chinese travellers are interested in -- from shopping for non-copy brand goods to rock climbing. I felt Nagano is well-situated for a lot of their needs, with Karuizawa being a shopping paradise and rock climbing as close as our backdoor, Kamuriki-yama.

One other thing I realized is the importance of figuring in the Chinese travel companies and guides, offering tour packages that provide profit for them.

All in all, the trip to Peking really opened my eyes to Chinese tourism!

亀清旅館の新しい貸切家族風呂の庭はすこしずつ形になってきています。庭師の岡田さんは大きい石や土を準備して頂いて、これからは植栽の植えつき。

家族風呂はもう入れる状態ですが、庭がないと風情がね。庭の完成は楽しみだ。

Kamesei Ryokan's private family bath's garden is slowly coming into shape. Our gardener, Okada-san, has placed the large rocks and prepared the soil. In a couple of days, he will plant the trees and flowers.

The bath itself is all ready, but it wouldn't be enjoyable to use without the garden around it. I am really looking forward to the garden's completion.

Which side is the 'face'?

亀清旅館の新しい貸切家族風呂の庭の石設置の写真です。ご近所の方の庭作りから余っていた石を頂きました。と言いながら、運搬は大変でした。クレーンは2台を手配しまして、やっと運ばれました。庭師の岡田さん、ご苦労様でした。

今度の木曜日当たりで木の植えつきの予定です。庭が完成したらお客様に入って頂けます。楽しみにしています!

Pictures from setting the rocks for Kamesei Ryokan's new private family bath. One of our neighbors has a stack of rocks left over from when they built their garden. He gave some to us for free. Of course, moving them entailed a lot of cost. But our gardener, Okada-san, was thrilled with the quality of the rocks.

Leave it to a gardener to think huge rocks are 'cool'.

Anyways, the trees and smaller plants will be planted this coming Thursday. Then our new bath will be ready for guests to try it out! I can't wait.

この秋の天気は寒くなったり温かくなったりのせいか、今年の紅葉はあまりぱっとしない。しかし、お客様の送迎のついでに上山田温泉の裏にある城山を車で登りました。そうすると、桜の赤からイチョウ真っ黄色まで、紅葉らしい葉っぱでした。

これが秋だ!と思いました。葉っぱは色変えずに落ちるのが一番面白くない秋の終わり方。城山のこの色を見れて、納得しました。秋が終わり、冬の初めはどうぞ。

This fall, perhaps due to the the wild temperature swings, the leaves haven't been showing their normal brilliant autumn colors. But I took some guests up to Joe Mountain, the hill behind our onsen town of Togura-Kamiyamada, and was treated to beautiful colors -- from the red of the cherry trees to the bright yellow of the ginkgo tree.

Now this is Autumn! It's dissappointing when fall ends with the leaves falling without changing color. After seeing today's autumn leaves at Joe Mountain, I feel fulfilled. Now I'm ready for fall to end and winter to come.

3日に上山田神楽保存会が来てくれて、亀清旅館の新しい貸切家族風呂の新築祝いしてくれました。

8月からずっと作り続いていた露天風呂の為に獅子舞して頂いて、嬉しかったです。一つな大きい段落を越えて、ほっとしました。

これで庭に仕上がりしてからお客様にどんどんと入って頂けますので楽しみです。

On the 3rd, the Kamiyamada Kagura Preservation Group came and did a lion dance to dedicate Kamesei Ryokan's new private family bath.

I have been working hard since August on the bath, so to have it dedicated like this means so much to me.

As soon as the garden is finished, we will be able to let our guests use the new bath!

文化の日という事で、上山田では文化祭が開催されます。例年通り、私達上山田神楽保存会の皆が獅子舞を文化会館の舞台で発表しました。地元の他の踊りなどのグループも発表しました。その中で、冠着太鼓の演奏も。子供達と一緒に見たけど、太鼓を生で聞くとやはり格好良い。4歳の美咲ちゃんが「体の中に入っちゃう」と感動しました。

文化会館の外で農協や商工会青年部などで物販があった。炭焼き立て秋刀魚が最高に美味しかった。

お神楽もそうですけど、他のグループもそうでしょう:　普段の活動も良いけどこうやって年に一度舞台で発表するのはうれしいよね。

With November 3rd being Culture Day and a national holiday in Japan, Kamiyamada holds a Culture Festival every year in the Culture Center. The Kagura shi-shi lion dance troupe I belong to participates every year. Along with other local groups, we perform on the main stage in the Center. This year, our local taiko group also performed. Our kids and I watched from the audience. Taiko is so cool to watch live. Little 4-year old Misaki said it felt like the taiko were playing inside her.

Outside the Center, local farm groups and the Chamber of Commerce Junior Association set up booths and were selling different food and goods. The charcoal-grilled 'sanma' (saury) was superb!

I don't know how it is for the other groups, but for us in the lion dance troupe, it's always exciting to perform on the big stage like this every year for the Culture Fest.
