信州は北海道からどれぐらい離れているか分かりませんが、今日は旅館組合からこの知らせが流れてきました。北海道のＧ８サミットに向かって、外人客に対して厳しくすると。「ようこそジャパン」と言いながら、テロの疑いを。言わせて頂けたら、八方美人くさい。
Nagano is a long way away from Hokkaido, but our Ryokan Assoc. faxed us this request to be more strict towards our guests from overseas in consideration of the up-coming Hokkaido G8 Summit. On one hand, we say 'Yokoso Japan'; on the other other we suspect guests are terrorists. Isn't that being a bit two-faced? 2008.06.26: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

先月は「千歳」の前の庭が出来、昨日は「末広」の客室の前の庭が完成されました。ガーデナーの岡田さんのお陰で素敵な庭が出来ました。デザイン的に比較的に影の多い千歳の方から移って、割りと明るい末広の方はそれなりの植物とデザインをかけたのでとってもいい感覚です。写真じゃ分かりにくいので是非、見に来ていただきたいと思っております。
Last month, the garden in front of 'Chitose' was completed, and yesterday, Suehiro's got finished. Our gardener, Okada-san, cleverly designed the new garden to be an extension of the first one. Chitose's is fairly shady, and as you move down the corridor, Suehiro's is more open and the choice of plants and the design reflects the sunnier environment. It's something best experienced in person, so please come and have a look!

初めての「とっかん」 My first Tokan

とっかん！ Tokan!

Just when you think you're starting to get a handle of things here in Japan, along comes a 'Tokan'. This evening, I was out behind our inn and heard a large explosion ("To-Kan"). At the park behind Kamesei, there was a funky truck with a bunch of people gathered around. It turned out to be an old guy, Arai-san, popping rice. I ran and got our kids, and a bunch of rice, and went back to experience the 'Tokan' in person. He looked at me and said, "I saw you on TV. I've been on TV 90 times, and will be on again next month." I didn't have the heart to tell him that I don't watch the boob tube. Anyways, he went on to explain that he has been doing 'Tokan' for 30+ years, longer than anyone else (presumably in the world). After tasting it, I could understand his popularity!
日本の生活に慣れてきたなと思ったら、「とっかん！」　亀清の裏の方に行ったら、近所の公園からでかい爆発の音が聞こえた。行ってみたら、ある面白い軽トラの周りに沢山の人が集まっていた。荒井おじさんがお米をポップしていた。亀清に戻って、息子達とお米をゲットして、とっかんを直接体験する為に新井さんのところに戻った。「テレビに出たよね」と言われちゃった。「わしも90回テレビに出た。来月にまた出る！」と。（「私はテレビを見ないと言えなかった。。。）話によると、新井さんが30年間以上とかんをやってきました。日本（世界？）一長くだそうです。味は美味しい訳だ！

隣の町の坂城は贅沢と言えるぐらい綺麗な中学校があります。去年に始め、そして先日は2回目で行きました。2年生の為のキャリアの特別授業で呼ばれました。「仕事に熱心だ」と言う事で、私の仕事の経験を話しました。いつも言いますけど、この旅館の仕事と言うのはお客様に落ち着かせる時間の提供ができるとは嬉しいことだと。私はこういう仕事が出来て、本当に幸せだと思っとります。
その学生に伝えたアドバイスは仕事でも何をしても、最低限をやるのではなく、何かエクストラを考えること。最低5ページの論文を書く時に6ページも書くとか、お客さんを駅に迎える時、宿に行くだけではなく、城山のお寺さんと上からの眺めをついでに案内するなど。とにかく、その＋αが大事だと。
最後で聞かれた質問が面白かった：旅館の仕事は一日何時間ですか？私にとっては旅館の素晴らしいところが趣味を生かせる仕事です。例えば、子供を連れて自転車でサイクリングする時に、「これはお客さんにも案内できるよね」と考えたりします。この公演だってそうです。仕事外と言えば仕事外ですが、亀清旅館がこの地域にある限りで地域に貢献するのは当たり前です。
旅館の仕事を楽しんでいる、この青い目の若旦那です。
Our neighboring town's Middle School has beautiful woodwork throughout, and Sakaki is duly proud of it. I went there for the first time last year, and then again yesterday. It was to give a speech for their career class as someone who is intense about their job. One of the main points I wanted to get across was the importance of doing something extra in whatever you do. If your teacher tells you to write a minimum 5 page report, write 6. If you pick up guests at the station, don't just take them directly back to the inn, but show them the view from the temple above the town on the way. In otherwords, +α.
The question asked of me at the end was interesting: How many hours do I work a day. Well, it depends on how you look at it. For example, even going for a bike ride with my son is a chance to look at new things to suggest to our guests. This speech to the M.S. students could be considered separate from work. However, to the extent that our inn exists in this area, we have a responsibility to interact and contribute to the society, so even this speech is 'work'.
That's me, enjoying working as the blue-eyed ryokan proprietor.

この写真じゃ分かりにくいかもしれませんが、亀清旅館の玄関の上にツバメの巣があります。最近は小鳥も顔を出してくれています。去年からツバメがこうやって巣をつくりに来てくれています。亀清のおもてなしは鳥まで？
It's probably hard to tell by this picture, but the swallows that built their nest above our entrance door are back this year, and their babies are peaking their little heads out of the nest. I guess Kamesei's hospitality extends to birds, too. 🙂

汚れではなく、毛！ That's not dirt -- it's hair!

ガーデナーの岡田さんが今度、末広という客室の前の庭を植えに来ました。私が気になっていた以前に植えてくれた石楠花の葉っぱをついでに聞いてみました。「この葉っぱは汚れているように見えるけど」と言ったら、「それは汚れではなく、新しい葉っぱの毛だよ」と教えたもらちゃった。その内に真緑になるようです。なるほどね！この新しい庭のお陰で色々と勉強になっています。
Our gardener, Okada-san, came today to start working on the garden in front of the guestroom Suehiro. I took the chance to ask him about a rhododendron he had planted previously. The leaves looked like they were dirty with dust. He told me, "That's not dust, that's the hair that new leaves naturally have." Apparently the hair grows out leaving a rich green color on the top side, but the bottoms of the leaves stay hairy. That's what I like about these new gardens -- I get to learn so many new things!

我が亀清旅館では最近に良く売れているのは「信州牛」のプランです。プランを始まったときに、信州牛はどれくらい手に入りにくいか知りませんでした。あちらこちらに探した結果で良いお店を見つけました。このお陰でこの珍しい物はいつでもご提供が出来ます。パンフを良く見たら、牛に信州りんごを食べさしている事も分かって、信州牛が上手い訳ですね。信州にお越しになれば、この美味しいお肉を是非、トライしてみてください。
One of our most popular menus here at Kamesei Ryokan is using Shinshu-Gyu beef. When we first started offering our local beef, we didn't realize how hard it is to come by. Fortunately, we have succeeded in securing a reliable source, and are able to offer Shinshu-Gyu to our guests on a regular basis. In looking at the brochure, I found out that one reason the steaks taste to good is that Nagano apples are used as part of the feed. Come and try out this local delicacy!

夕べは梅雨らしい雨でした。今朝は庭を見たら咲き出したアジサイに雫の姿を見てこの写真を撮りました。

Last night it rained cats and dogs. We are definitely in the rainy season. This morning, when I woke up and looked at our naka-niwa garden, the sight of the rain drops on the just-starting-to-open hydrangeas was so pretty, I just had to take this picture.

千曲サイクリングクラブの第一ツアーInaugural Ride for the Chikuma Cycling Club

2008.06.21: サイクリング Cycling

戸倉上山田温泉でスタート、千曲川沿いのサイクリングロードで川中島古戦場まで、松城を寄って、またサイクリングロードで戻るという５０ｋｍの「自転車でゆく風林火山」というテーマーのツアー、千曲サイクリングクラブの始めて、を長男と2人で参加しました。リーダーの金井さんが細かい道の詳しいこと！サイクリングロードで走るのは勿論楽しいですが、松代の小道を自転車で回るのが最高です。
私は以前に松代城跡や真田邸、地価トンネルなど行っていますが、今日は初めて象山神社と山寺常山邸に行きました。松代のファンになってしまいました！
そして、千曲サイクリングクラブのファンにも。次のイベントは9月に戸倉上山田温泉からオブ背までのライドだそうです。シアトルに行ったころは自転車を良く乗りました。ポートランドまでの約360ｋｍのツアーは2回も。こっちに引越ししてきて、今日みたいなライドをずっと期待していました。金井さん、有難うございました！
Today was the first ever bicycle tour put on by the Chikuma Cycling Club. We started out here at Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, rode along the Chikuma River Cycling Road to the old samurai battle site at Kawanakajima, and came back through Matsushiro, for a total of 50km.
The ride along the Chikuma River was great, but touring Matsushiro on bicycle was fantastic. I had been there many times, seeing the Sanada Residence, the remains of Matsushiro Castle, and the WWII-era underground fortress. But leisurely touring the town on bicycle gives you a chance to see and appreciate much more. Today I saw Yamadera Jyozan-Tei and Zozan Shrine for the first time. I think I've become a Matsushiro fan!
I've also become a fan of the Chikuma Cycling Club! Our tour leader, Kanai-san, knew just the perfect backroads to cycle on. The next event is a ride to Obuse in September. Will keep the blog posted.

2008.06.20: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

亀清旅館のメインのトイレの改造工事が終わりました。私が内装をある程度決めたので心配でしたが、結構良い結果になりました。なるべく自然な材料（木の腰壁、陶器のシンクなど）を利用しましたのでなかなかおしゃれです。
まあ、トイレが新しくなったから来るというお客様はいないと思います（逆にいれば怖いですね）が、こうやって亀清旅館をちょっとずつ磨いていっています。
Kamesei Ryokan's main toilet's remodel is now complete. I picked out the interior finish, trying to use as many natural materials as possible (wood for the wainscoating, pottery for the sink, etc.). The final result has a nice feel to it.
I don't expect any guests will come stay just because we have a new toilet (in fact, it would be scary if someone did!), but this is just the latest in our efforts to revitalize the inn.
