信州ぶどうーー美味しい！
信州は、秋のりんごで有名ですが、夏も美味しい果実が沢山あります。川中島の桃が出始まったし、ぶどうも始まっています。ぶどう狩りをしたい方がいらっしゃれば、知り合いの畑で出来るので喜んで紹介いたします。
Nagano is famous for its apples in the fall, but its summer fruits are delicious, too. The Kawanakajima peach season is just starting, as is the grape season. For anyone who wants to try doing grape U-Pick, a good friend of ours has lots of grape vines. We'd be happy to introduce him.

Sayuki Symposium
戸倉上山田温泉の町興しの行事で浅草の芸者、紗幸さん（歴史上の初めての外国人芸者）と戸倉上山田温泉のコラボレーションが行いました。新しい芸者がなかなか少ないと言う問題と旅館側と芸者側の誤解に対して、昨日は若い女性三人が１日芸者体験をやり、今朝は紗幸さんと芸妓組合と旅館組合のシンポジウムでした。こういう話し合いの継続が出来るので私も全面的にサポートしております。温泉旅館の文化もそうですが、芸者文化も大事にしなければならない！そう言う気持ちで私が紗幸さんをこの温泉に紹介しました。
As part of our on-going projects to revitalize Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, Sayuki-san, a geisha from Asakusa (and Japan's first foreigner geisha) came to do a colloboration with our town's geisha guild. In order to address the problems of too few new geisha and the misconceptions between the innkeepers and the guild, yesterday had 3 young ladies try out being geisha for a day, and this morning we had a symposium with Sayuki-san, innkeepers, and the geisha guild. To me, it's important to work hard to protect the culture of Japan's onsen ryokans (which is one of the main reasons I came to Kamesei), but equally as important to maintain Japan's geisha culture, too. That's one of the reasons I introduced Sayuki-san to this onsen.

お風呂タイム！４１℃
夏で外の気温が大分高くなりました。そのせいか、亀清旅館のお風呂の温度もこのごろ、暑く感じています。窓を開けて空気を通していて、なるべく対応しております。でも、人それぞれなので悲しい事はこの間のお客さんが「暑くて結局は入れなかった」と言う残念なコメントが入りました。今日も外の温度が３０℃より上がっているので気になっていましたからお風呂の温度を計りました。結果は：
小さい内風呂：４１℃
大きい内風呂：４０℃
露天風呂：３９℃
他の温泉地の４５～４６℃と比較すればまだ入りやすい温度ではないかと思います。入る瞬間は暑く感じるかもしれませんが、入ってしまえば大丈夫と思います。特に、露天風呂ですね。皆様、どうぞ、お入りになってください！
With it being summer, the outside temperature is climbing. Maybe that's to blame for our onsen baths feeling a little hot. We try to cool the baths down a bit by keeping the windows open and letting air circulate. But we received an unfortunate comment back from one guest who said she never was able to get in because it felt so hot. Today's temperature is in the 30's (C), so with concern, I checked the baths' temperatures, with the following results:
Small Indoor Bath: 41C
Large Indoor Bath: 40C
Outdoor Bath: 39C
Those temperatures are a lot more reasonable to handle than the 45~46 C of some other onsens. Our baths may feel hot to the touch, but after you get in and soak, the temperature should feel soothing. I hope everyone can come and enjoy our baths!

Catch the noodles!
温泉の友達の家に呼んで頂いて、流しそうめんをやりました。こんな楽しい事！はまりました。
Some neighborhood friends invited us over for a lunch of 'Nagashi Somen'. They take somen noodles and slide them down a chute, and everyone tries to catch them with chopsticks. What a blast!

先日に書いた様に亀清旅館は海外からの観光客の為のジャパニース・イン・グループに入りました。その条件の１つとしては日本語を読めない方は宿名が分かるように英語の看板を設置する事。なるほど。今日、この看板をやっと完成しましたので取り付けておきました。亀清の亀のマークも書きました。いかがでしょうか？
As previously mentioned, Kamesei Ryokan has become a member of the Japanese Inn Group. One of the requirements was to have the name of our inn posted out front for people who can't read Japanese. That certainly makes sense. I made this sign, complete with our turtle mark. How does it look?
亀清旅館は今日から正式的にＪａｐａｎｅｓｅ Ｉｎｎ Ｇｒｏｕｐのメンバーとなりました。このグループは海外から来る旅行者に日本の旅館を紹介している。亀清の伝統的な良さを外国人観光客にも知って欲しいと思っております。そして、この英語を喋れる青い眼の若旦那もいるから言葉の壁は心配ない。
As of today, Kamesei Ryokan is offically a member of the Japanese Inn Group. This organization is dedicated to introducing Japanese ryokans to travelers from overseas. I would really like to share our onsen ryokan's tradition with guests from overseas. Even backpackers travelling on a limited budget should experience staying at a ryokan at least once during their time in Japan. And with myself speaking English, they don't have to worry about a language barrier.

この青い目の若旦那が長野テレビ局ＮＢＳの「８１市町村応援サイト」の「エリアブログ」、千曲市の代表として選ばれました。月１回なペースで千曲市の自慢のブログを書くことになりました。第一回は「姨捨駅」です：

日本の諺、「灯台下暗し」の様に、千曲市の一番自慢が出来る所は市民があまり行かない所：姨捨駅からの夜景です。百回以上、我が宿のお客さんに夕食後で「姨捨夜景・伝説ツアー」に私が連れて行っております。駅のホームからの一目で見える善光寺平の夜景は勿論綺麗ですが、他の楽しみも沢山あります。
日本人は「三大」何とかが好きなので、姨捨駅は「三大車窓」となっています。夜のその善光寺平の光りを見れば納得は出来ると思います。お昼は棚田や千曲川の眺めもうんと綺麗です。

青い目の若旦那とはりきり若女将
我が家族の夏休みのお泊りは大町温泉のかしわ荘でした。選んだ理由はクチコミの評判でした。その評判通り、宿の英顔が素晴らしかったです。特に、若女将のさちえさん。お会いできて、嬉しかったです。同業者で話がうんと盛り上がっていて、とにかくさちえさんのパワーに感心しました。お互いに頑張りましょうね！
One of our favorite things about our summer vacation is staying at someone else's ryokan. This time we chose Kashiwa-so in Omachi Onsen, mostly for all the good customer comments. And the comments were right -- the people at the inn were so energetic and friendly, especially the proprietress: Sachie-san. It was fantastic meeting her, and we hit it off right away, comparing stories about running our ryokans. Sachie-san's power and charisma is so catching. I wish her the best with running her inn!

黒部若女将と若若女将
黒部ダムと立山アルペンルート:信州の有名な観光地のトップ５ぐらいに入るようです。信州の旅館を経営している中でこういうところも知るべきだと言うことで、今日は初めて行って見ました。トンネルのトロリーバスやケーブルカーやロープウェーなど色々な乗り物を楽しめるし、ダムが確かに世界レベルな大きさで感動的；でも一番気に入ったのは室堂の地獄谷でした。
がっかりの事はダム及びそれぞれの設備は５０年前ぐらいに完成されて、今日は高いお金が取られる：５０年前の工事を払い続いているかとにかく全部は５０年前のままでした。新しい設備は１つもなかった。５０年前にコンクリートが流行っていたかどうか知りませんが、せっかく大自然な場面なのにコンクリートのイメージが残る。そして、見所よりお土産屋さんが多かった。５０年前の日本の旅行文化に合っているかもしれませんが今の日本人の旅行にーづに合わないでしょう。台湾人の団体客が最近に多くなっているって聞いて、台湾人の旅行文化がまだ育ってきている途中だ（５０年前の日本の様）って聞いて、なるほどな。天辺の地獄谷こそ、原風景を残しているＹｅｌｌｏｗｓｔｏｎｅ国立公園と比べて、人間の手がかけ過ぎていたと思いました。
日本アルプスに行きたい方に上高地の方が大自然を楽しめるのでお勧めです。立山なら、お土産屋さんじゃなく、トレッキングですね。
Kurobe Dam and the Tateyama Alpen Route ranks probably in the top 5 of Nagano's tourism destinations. So as an innkeeper in Nagano, I felt it necessary to go. The dam is one of the biggest in the world, and transportation is via tunnel trolley busses, cable cars and rope ways. The part we liked the best was Jigokudani ("Hell Valley") at the top, alive with volcanic activity.
The dam and the various buildings were completed about 50 years ago. The cost for all of this was very expensive. I'm not sure if the money is still going to pay off the construction costs, but there certainly hasn't been any new construction since then. In fact, there were more souvenir shops than sights to see. I think Japan's travel culture has grown out of this type of tourism. In fact, a large proportion of the tourists we saw were Taiwanese, whose travel culture is perhaps at a less developed stage. For people wanting to see the Japanese Alps, I recommend the natural beauty of Kamikochi. Or, if you go to Tateyama, go trekking instead of souvenir shopping!

亀清旅館は今日と明日、年一度の夏休みで～す！子供達を連れて、家族でお出かけです。信州の反対側の立山・黒部ダムアルペンルートへ。
その途中、麻績村の「香舎」と言う電車（貨車？）の形のレストランでおそばと定食を。上田市に夢ハウスという本物の電車車両があるそばレストランの次に面白い鉄道テーマのレストラン。子供達は大喜び！（お父さんも）
Today and Tomorrow, we are closing Kamesei Ryokan for our annual summer vacation. We piled the kids in the car, and are taking off for the other side of Nagano Prefecture, to Tateyama-Kurobe Alpen Route.
On the way, we stopped in Omi Village at this restaurant named 'Kasha' for lunch. Kasha is a synonym for train car, and the building is shaped like one. Our kids enjoyed the train theme. (Their dad did, too!)
