Scrap Metal World

This American’s Omotenashi

Today I experienced the scrap metal universe for the first time. One of Kamesei's relatives works for a metal recycler, so I piled up our "K-tru" pick-up with all the various metals that we'd accumulated here, and drove out to Isao-san's work site. First we picked out the non-iron stuff by hand, then they used this huge power magnet to pick up all the iron. I was worried my little pick-up would be lifted up, too!

After that, Isao-san took me for coffee. The Karuizawa area is fortunate to have lots of cool little coffee shops and "kissaten" tea shops. The one we went to featured a nice view of Mount Asama. We could sip our cappuchino while watching the plume of ash rise from the mountain.

Metal scrapping and Karuizawa coffee -- only in Nagano!

Another Day, Another Annual Meeting; A New Role

This American’s Omotenashi

Yesterday was the Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc. annual meeting, today was the meeting for the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen Ryokan Junior Assoc. In the morning, we put up the flags for next week's big walk to Zenkoji, and in the afternoon we held our meeting. For this two-year term, I have been made assistant leader. It's primarily just a preparatory step for upcoming roles, but I hope to make our senpai elders happy.

First Time to Run a Meeting

This American’s Omotenashi

Since I've moved here to Kamiyamada, I've become active in several organizations, and have had to attend lots of Annual Meetings for the various organizations. These official meetings have always surprised me by how dry they are. I understand that peoples' money is involved, so these formal officialities have to take place, but still, the meetings are always so dry.
I had no idea that one day, I'd find myself in the position of saying, "Welcome to such-and-such group's annual meeting. My name is Tyler Lynch and I will be running the meeting today." But at today's Chikuma Int'l Exchange Assoc.'s general meeting, that is exactly what happened -- my first experience with running one of these dry formalities. I bumbled a few kanji readings, but managed to carry out the meeting.
At the lunch banquet after the meeting, I changed clothes and joined the Kamiyamada Okagura lion dance troupe for a dance for for the guests. It was an eventful, and memorable, annual meeting for me.

Rainy Gokaicho Weekend

Seasons

I feel sorry for all of the people who are going to Nagano City this weekend for Zenkoji's once-every-seven-years Gokaicho. It's supposed to rain both Saturday and Sunday. The surface of our koi pond shows the splitter splatter of the rain drops. Well, on a day like this, the rain just makes you want to take a nice, long soak in the onsen bath. We'll have the baths all ready for our guests when they come this afternoon.

New "Lunch with a Geisha" Plan

Miscellaneous

Lunch with a Geisha
I moved to Nagano 3-1/2 years ago to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to continue my wife's family inn, Kamesei Ryokan. I really like the traditional feel of Kamesei, with its central garden and semi-detached rooms and warm wood construction. Togura Kamiyamada Onsen also appeals to me with its geisha heritage, and I love Nagano's beautiful nature -- the green mountains and soothing onsen baths. Now I have created a plan incorporating the best of all three:
Lunch with a Geisha
* "Kaiseki" meal served in our traditional ryokan
* A soak in our Kamiyamada Onsen mineral baths
* Entertainment by Togura Kamiyamada geishas.

This is Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's first lunch-time Geisha plan. Our Chef Takei will prepare a full multi-course meal featuring local and seasonal ingredients, and I will add a detailed explanation in English for our guests from overseas. Before or after the lunch, the guests can enjoy Kamiyamada's onsen water high in sulfur content. We feature outdoor baths in both the men's and women's sides. And there will be geisha entertainment. Some songs and dances will be performed for the guests to enjoy passively, but then the geisha will engage the guests in traditional parlor games as well as teaching them some of our local dances. It should be a memorable "ryokan" and "onsen" and "geisha" experience for the guests.

Nagano is fortunate to have so many attractions for foreigners -- Jigokudani's snow monkeys, historical Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, Matsumoto Castle and the Japanese Alps, Hakuba & Nozawa, Shiga Kogen and other ski resorts, and so much more. Now, with this "Lunch with a Geisha" plan, I hope to share Nagano's onsen culture with visitors from abroad.

Mount Asama at 260km/h

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Last night, on the Nagano Shinkansen coming back from Tokyo, around the Karuizawa area you could see Mount Asama with a cloud of volcanic ash rising from its peak. The whole scene was impressively dynamic -- massive Mount Asama showing signs of volcanic activity, with the ash cloud dark against the sunset-tainted orange sky, all while flying at 260 km/h in the "Asama" Nagano Shinkansen bullet train -- human and natural forces at work.

My debut at the Ryokan Junior Association national level

This American’s Omotenashi

My official pin badge

From today, I officially joined the All-Japan Ryokan Association's Junior Association at the national level. My fellow members and I gathered in Tokyo from onsens and towns from all across the country. The team I am joining will research ways for inns to join forces with the businesses in their communities. I hope to learn some valuable lessons to take back to Togura-Kamiyamada. I certainly hope to make the best of the next two years on this project!

Preparing to be pulled by an ox

Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

The other junior innkeepers and I got together in preparation for our town's big upcoming event, the 30km walk from Togura Kamiyamada Onsen to Zenkoji Temple in honor of the "Pulled by an Ox to Zenkoji" legend. We made the "kasa" hats for the participants to wear. I tried doing some of the writing, but my "senpai" (elder) wasn't happy with my lack of style. Ouch! Maybe if I keep doing it, I'll get the hang of it?

Typical Nagano Scene: Apple Blossoms

Seasons

Here in Nagano, after the cherry trees finish blooming come the apple blossoms. And here in Kamiyamada, there are lots of apple orchards. I always look forward to eating fresh-picked apples in September and October. And although apple blossoms aren't as showy as cherry blossoms, since the flowers come out at the same time as leaves do, I personally think they are attractive. And for me, they really represent Nagano.

Kappa * Kamikochi

Tsukeba Fish Shacks

Even people with the strongest aversion to river fish should be able to appreciate eating just-caught fish served in a Tsukeba river shack along the shores of the Chikuma River. Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's main Tsukeba, "Shomura", opens for business this season on the 20th of April, and will serve "haya" and "ayu" prepared in various ways in their multi-course meal (prices 2000~3000 yen per person). Ninjas * Togakushi

Togakushi's ninjas came out of their winter hibernation on the 18th of April. That's when the Togakushi Ninja Center opened for business for the year. At the Center, there is a ninja artifacts hall, a shuriken range, and a ninja fun house, where you go through the building finding the secret doors from room to room.

Oni * Oni Oshi Dashi
An Oni is a Japanese ogre. On the flanks of Mt. Asama is an area that looks like a bunch of volcanic matter was pushed out of the mountain by an oni, hence the park's name, "Oni Oshi Dashi". It is a fascinating example of geological forces at work. The park has been open since March -- apparently that's when the oni hibernation ended.
Easy access from Karuizawa.
