Snowy Outdoor Bath at Daybreak

Kamesei Ryokan

This morning, I woke up before the sun did and made my rounds around the lobby and baths. When I checked on the outdoor bath, its surrounding garden was still covered in snow, and the eastern sky was starting to get light, and steam was rising from the onsen bath -- quite a scene. And I thought to myself, this is what I came to Japan for...

Oh, so this is what Yuki-Mi shoji screens are for.

Kamesei Ryokan

Japanese carpentry always amazes me. One feature is particularly cool: the "yuki-mi" (snow-viewing) shoji screen doors. Shoji in and of themselves are cool -- the wood slats creating a warm contrast to the white rice paper (who in the West would've thought about making a wall out of paper!), while letting in a soft, translucent light. But the yuki-mi is the icing on the coolness cake. Allow me to explain: a traditional tatami-mat Japanese room usually has a "en-gawa" corridor between it and the outside wall. Shoji screens are used for the dividing wall. In the summer, one opens the screens to enjoy the view of the garden outside of the en-gawa. At night or when you want privacy, you close the shoji screens.
The problem is, in winter, people in the room want to close the shoji to keep the heat in, but you still want to see the garden. Hence, yuki-mi, which is a glass section of the shoji screen. The rice paper section in front lifts and is held in places by tiny side springs. So you have a barrier to keep in the heat, but you can see through it to the garden outside covered in snow. Pretty cool, eh?
Now, back to the story at hand. All of our guestrooms have a "veranda" in place of the en-gawa corridor. So there's the tatami room, the shoji screens, the veranda, full windows or glass patio doors, and (for the 1st floor rooms) a garden. This past October, we built new gardens for 2 of the rooms. Those rooms' patio doors had been made of obscure privacy glass. We changed them out to clear glass so guests could enjoy the new garden. With last night's snow, the guests in those rooms could keep the shoji closed, look through the yuki-mi glass sections and enjoy the view of the snow, all while staying warm. The yuki-mi shoji which had been there all along, but had been rendered useless by the privacy glass, finally got their chance to be utilized! A Cool Japan feature realized by this American innkeeper.

Eco-Spirit vs. Global Warming

Culture Shock

Global Warming. Earth-Friendly. Ecological Spirit.

COP 15

Politicians Talk, Leaders Act.

Denmark, where COP 15 is currently taking place, is also the home to The Green Key, a system of recognizing hotels and hostels that meet a strict ecological standard. I took a look at their criteria, and it is quite impressive.

Kamesei Ryokan is registered with Nagano Prefecture's "Shinshu Eco-haku" program. However, I have to tell you, it is a joke. Some inns registered just on the basis of changing their incandescent lightbulbs to fluorescent ones. The Green Key on the other hand, requires the much more environmentally friendly (but expensive) LED bulbs.

Only 3 lodging establishments in Japan have qualified so far for The Green Key, and one of them is here in Nagano: Myojinkan. I can tell you, within our industry, Myojinkan is considered a clear leader.

So which are you: a talker or a doer?

First Snow of the Year!

Seasons

Last night before I went to bed, I looked out and saw lots of pretty stars in the sky. So I was surprised when I looked outside this morning and saw snow covering everything. Last year our first snowfall was 26-Dec, this year is almost 2 weeks earlier. This has me hopeful that we'll get a white Christmas!
Our naka-niwa garden looks so pretty when covered in snow, and our guests were excited about being able to bathe in our outdoor onsen bath with snow all around. I personally like the look of snow on Japanese kawara roof tiles.
With so many people enjoying the snowy scenery so much, I was surprised when our rep at Internet Travel Agency Y turned me down when I offered to send him a picture of our garden covered in snow. He said their customers don't like wintery driving so they avoid using pictures of snow. That strikes me as odd. It's my guess that there's lots of people living in Tokyo's concrete jungle that are tired of the grey winter and want to come up to Nagano and its snow country. I think they'd love to escape and stay at an onsen ryokan like ours.
I just hope this year we get more snow than the past few years. Especially for a White Christmas!

Going on a Date with the Proprietress to our town's new soba shop

Culture Shock

Togura Kamiyamada's Kara-Koro civic improvement's latest development is the new soba restaurant that opened in the newly renovated Sarashina-kan. We received some funds from the prefecture to renovate what had been an empty storefront. Half of it is this new soba shop which features counters where people can stand and eat the soba. The other half is a stained glass workshop. This is a huge improvement to our town, as what had been an eyesore right in the middle of our main street is now a vibrant magnet for attracting people.
Speaking of attracting things, my wife and I went for a walk together to the new soba shop for lunch today. It must be rare for couples in Japan to be seen together, because so many people we passed commented, "Oh, are you two going out on a date?" I asked Mari if we should hold hands as we walked, but she said it would be even more embarrassing. There just seems to be a different take on "family" here. For example, if I tell my fellow innkeepers that our family went for a drive or something together, they refer to it as "family service", much like a convict sweeping the streets isn't doing so because he likes or wants to, but for "community service". Back home in the States, a married couple out for a walk, or a family having fun together, would be considered ... normal!

Chikuma City's Wood Block Print Mecca: Bangakan

Reasons to Come to Nagano

Chikuma City is fortunate to have so many wood block print artists living here. Several actively show their work at galleries across the country as well as internationally. One artist, though, focuses on local shows. His works often feature local themes, such as area scenery, legends, childrens songs, etc. He even bought a local old farmhouse and remodelled it into an art gallery. The man is Mori Bakuro, otherwise known as our local wood block print artist.
The other day, I went to Mori-san's gallery, the Anzu-no-Sato (Apricot Village) Bangakan. I happened to catch him at his workshop adjacent to the gallery. Even though the gallery is technically closed during the winter (too much natural air conditioning...), he opened it up to give me a look. I really like Bakuro-san's art, and was looking forward to seeing lots of examples of it in the gallery. So I was surprised to find out that most of the artwork there was by other artists, in particular Mori-san's predecessors, local masters that have passed on. The lighting and the feel of the displays is really stylish, or "shibui" as they say in Japanese. I just call it "cool"!
The building housing the gallery is also really "cool"! It is an old farmhouse and features beautiful woodwork and massive beams. Mori-san led an effort of 800 people's cooperation to preserve the house. And now this classic house serves to preserve classic wood block prints, too.

Ryokan Time: a clock for the onsen changing room

Kamesei Ryokan

The new clock in the ladies bath

We received some feedback from one of our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan that we need clocks in the onsen bath changing rooms and the guest rooms.
Now, we definitely should have clocks in the changing rooms. Guests need to time their baths around their meal times, as well as guys and ladies tell each other what time to meet after their separate baths. There has always been a clock in the guys bath, but not in the ladies. So when we got the comment from our guest, I thought, Yes -- we need a clock! So I started looking for one that matches, and finally found a wood trimmed one that seems to fit in. I bought it and put it up on the wall right away.
The guestroom is a different issue. We ryokans hesitate to put clocks in the guestrooms. The reason is that a ryokan is a place to relax, take it easy, and forget time. So we don't put a clock in the rooms on purpose.
I went ahead and followed our guest's suggestion on putting a clock in the bath changing room, but as per this reason, we won't be puting one in the guestrooms. I hope our guests appreciate it.

Exhibition de Agnes

Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

As I wrote about a few days ago, local pottery artist Agnes-san is having an exhibition at the grand Tokyu Department Store in Nagano City currently. Our family went to go see it today. I loved the unique sake cups and holders (one Japanese person told me, "Only a non-Japanese could conceive of these designs!") and ikebana frogs. Pieces of art, but art that could be incorporated into ordinary life. Well, perhaps "special" life. And I hope someday to create a "special" plan here at Kamesei using such creations.
Note: Agnes' exhibition only goes through the 16th, so hurry!

While wandering around Yashiro...

Culture Shock

All who wander are not lost

While out driving, whenever I have some extra time, I like to take side streets and explore back roads. The other day, on a side road between Route 18 and the old Hokkoku Kaido trail in Yashiro, I came across this torii shrine gate and these enormous trees. I just had to stop the car, get out and take a closer look at these massive guys. I didn't see any sign, but I'd guess these trees are older than even my own country. Simple amazing.

The Obasute Rice Fields in the Headlines

Miscellaneous

Today's Shinano Mainichi Shimbun, Nagano Prefecture's main newspaper, had a big picture of the Obasute terraced rice fields on the cover. Apparently, they had been selected as an Important Cultural Scenery, one of 19 across the country and the only one here in Nagano Prefecture. The rice fields look much the same as they did during the Edo era. I think it's great that Obasute is getting such recognition. Myself and the other inns here in Togura Kamiyamada have been trying our hardest to get the word out about this jewel of a place.
