町興しの仕事は難しいです。たまに、休憩して美味しいラーメンを食べなきゃ。
今日の戸倉上山田温泉カラコロにぎわい協議会の会議(委員長：私)で温泉の喫茶店巡りやおしぼりうどん巡り、レンタル自転車などの打ち合わせがありました。終わったら、参加してくれた千曲サイクリングクラブ（ＣＣＣ）のすぴっつさんとラーマンへ。すぴっつさんはこの戸倉上山田温泉の会議の為に仕事を態々休んだ。(ご苦労様です！）二人で、上山田のこだわりのラーメン屋さん「麺's Table 亀屋」に行きました。千曲市産の小麦粉の麺から、お店のインテリアの細かい飾り(子供連れは難しいかも)や館内の完全に禁煙のお所まで、亀屋はこだわりで頑張っています。
良い町興し、良い仲間、良いラーメン！

Civic Improvement can be hard work. Sometimes you need to take time out for ramen.
This morning Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's Kara-Koro civic association held a meeting (with myself the committee chairperson) on the joint-tea shop, joint "oshibori" udon restaurant and rental bicycles projects. Afterwards, I went out for lunch with Spitz-san. He is the man in charge of the Chikuma Cycling Club (CCC) and took the day off from work just to help out our town. The ramen-shop we went to was "Men's Table Kameya". Men means noodles, as in ra-men. Kameya prides itself on using only wheat flower grown here in Chikuma City, as well as its intricately decorated interior (making it a mismatch for fidgety kids), its completely no-smoking premises and so much more.
Good meeting, good cycling buddy, good ramen!

Norikura Mountain and the Ushidome Reflecting Pond

乗鞍と上高地が岐阜県川の奥飛騨温泉郷と毎年、この時期に交流会を行うそうです。今年のテーマーはインバウンドでしたので、私を呼んでくれました。欧米人はどういうおもてなしを求めているかについて講演しました。こういう講演のおかげで、私はその地域の方々と交流が出来て、非常に有り難い事です。今回もそうです。講演前に、長野インバウンドサミットの仲間と集まって、地元の西糸屋の奥原さん(上高地）とアルパイン・イン・みずしろの宮原さん(乗鞍)が乗鞍高原を案内してくれました。
正直って、今までは乗鞍の役割が分からなかった。上高地は梓川と河童橋とアルプスの大自然；白骨温泉は独特のミルキーのお湯に自然の中の露天風呂。それと比較したら、乗鞍の魅力はなんだろうとずっと不思議に思っていました。今日はその魅力とたっぷり触れ合えました。長野県の良さは改めて感じました。
乗鞍に着いて第一印象は｢空気が綺麗！」尚且つ、硫黄の香りもしました。乗鞍の温泉の成分は半端じゃないと分かりました。偶々、今日は晴れている日なので雪をかぶっている乗鞍岳は美しく見えまして、青空も最高に綺麗でした。
お昼だったのでまずはお蕎麦屋さんへ。乗鞍の代表の｢中乃屋｣さん。そこで、皆で投じそばを食べました。私は生まれてから初めて投じそばを食べて、感動しました。そばのしゃぶしゃぶって感じ。大変美味しく頂きました。
それから、番所大滝と牛留池に連れていただきました。それで乗鞍の良さが分かってきました：自然を楽しめる沢山のコースがあること。長く滞在しても、乗鞍だけからそのふもとの高原まで、様々な楽しめる場所がある。
奥原さんと宮原さん、ご親切に案内していただいて、有難うございました。そして、商工会の皆様、呼んで頂いて、有難うございました。
The ryokan associations of Norikura and Kamikochi held their annual exchange with Oku-Hida on the Gifu Prefecture side of the Alps today in Norikura. The theme was about attracting guests from overseas, and they invited me to talk. Actually, I really look forward to opportunities like this to get to know a new area and its people. Before the speech, my fellow Inbound Summit participants and I met and were given a tour of Norikura by Nishiitoya's Okuhara-san (Kamikochi) and Alpine Inn Mizushiro's Miyahara-san (Norikura).
To be honest, I had always been confused about Norikura's role in the Northern Alps. I was familiar with nearby Shirahone Onsen and its unique milky white onsen and outdoor baths in spectacular natural settings, as well as Kamikochi with its awe-inspiring scenery of the turquoise-blue Azusa River contrasting with the lush forests with the massive Alps in the background. Today, I finally discovered the attraction Norikura offers.
My first impression of Norikura was how clean the air was. Plus it had a faint smell of sulfur, from the strong onsen waters.
We had arrived at lunch, so first we headed over to Nakanoya, Norikura's premier soba restaurant. There we had Toji-soba. It was my first time to try this version of soba noodles where you "throw" them in a broth for a quick shabushabu-style dipping. Delicious!
Then we went for walks to Mandokoro Falls and Ushidome Pond. It was then that I understood how special Norikura is. It lends itself to a multi-day stay, where you can enjoy the many nature walks, from the 3000m peaks of Norikura-dake to the lakes, falls, pastures, etc. of the Norikura Highlands.
I want to thank Okuhara-san and Miyahara-san for their hospitality, as well as the Shokokai for inviting me.

2009.12.01: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

以前にも書きましたが、亀清旅館の一番古い建物(大正時代に現在の位置に移築された、実際にいつ造られたか、誰も知らない！）は色々と不便があるけれど、この歴史的な建物を壊して一階立てで作り直すのではなくて、工夫してそのまま使う判断しました。従って、ボロボロとなっていた屋根はこの機会で葺き替えるようにしました。この建物が二階たての木造、２階が大広間になっている建物です。亀清の原点です。大事に使っていく中で、まずは屋根の瓦を直す事。瓦を取り外すだけで4日間ぐらいかかる予定です。すごい作業です。亀清旅館の次の世代に向かって、改善改善！
As previously mentioned, we decided to keep Kamesei's oldest building, making improvements on it and using it as it is rather than tearing the historical building down and rebuilding. The first improvement we have to make is to replace the aging roof tiles. Removing the old tiles alone will take 4 days. What a huge job! But the building is over a hundred years old (no one knows for sure exactly how old -- it was disassembled and moved here for reassembly during the Taisho era; its previous history is lost!). Hopefully this repair will help it last the next 100 years!

料理長刺激：戸倉上山田温泉の料理コンテスト２ Sparking Culinary Creativity: Togura-Kamiyamada's 2nd Cooking Contest

2009.11.30: 温泉タウン戸倉上山田 Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

戸倉上山田温泉の町興し行事、料理コンテストは今日、行われました。｢競争｣のきかけで、それぞれの旅館の板長達が頑張って工夫したお料理を出して、お互いに交流し情報交換も出来、そしてＭｉｃｈｅｌｉｎ二星を取っている谷先生の良いアドバイスも聞けました。地元のテレビも取材してくれて、温泉のいい宣伝にもなりました。
次は、我々旅館若旦那たちの布団引きコンテストをしたいね。:)

One of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen's civic improvement events took place today -- a cooking contest. The chefs of the various inns worked hard to come up with creative dishes using local ingredients, and we had 2-star Michelin chef, Tani-sensei from Tokyo, judge the results. Nothing like a little competition to get the creative juices going, and get the chefs talking with each other. We also got good coverage from the local tv stations to boot!
Next up: Futon flipping contest with us junior innkeepers! (Just joking!)

2009.11.29: 日米関係Culture Shock

今日は長野県旅館青年部のセミナーで隣の隣の上田市の上の菅平に出かけました。上には雪の予想だった為に、車のタイヤーをストッドレスに変えてから出かけました。途中で上田の電気製品屋さんによって、親の為のクリスマスの買い物をしました。
その中で、ブログに書けるような内容はあるかな・・・と悩んだ時、お店から出たら、隣の上田城を見て、あっ、これだ！と思いました。上田城は久しぶりに見たし、こうやって下から見る機会はあまり無い。やっぱり、日本のお城は格好良いなと改めて思いました。但し、下隣は派手な電気製品屋さんがあるって、また日本らしいミスマッチ。

Today I had to go up to Suga-Daira, the ski area above neighboring Ueda City, for a ryokan junior association seminar. The weather report called for snow in the higher elevations, so I changed the tires on our car to snow tires. On the way through Ueda, I stopped at an electronics store to do some Christmas shopping for my parents. All along, I kept thinking, where is a blog-worthy story here? Then when I came out of the store and looked across the parking lot, there was Ueda Castle up on the hill. I hadn't seen Ueda Castle for a while, especially not from this angle. I had forgotten just how cool Japan's castles were. And right next to the castle -- a garish electronics store. A uniquely Japanese mis-match!

2009.11.28: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

秋から冬に切り替える時、ハロウィーンのかぼちゃを片付けて、クリスマスの飾りを付けるのは、亀清旅館の毎年の伝統です。今日は外観のクリスマスのイルミネーションを飾りました。今年は長男のＡｎｄｙ君が一緒に屋根の上に上って、手伝ってくれました。サンタさんのご来館は後1ヶ月。楽しみにしています。

With the change from fall to winter, here at Kamesei it is our tradition to put away the Halloween pumpkins, and take out the Christmas decorations. Today, we put up the lights on the outside of our inn. Our oldest son, Andy, climbed up on the roof to help me this year. Santa's coming is less than a month away -- we can hardly wait!

皆、｢何それ？｣と思われているかもしれないので説明させていただきます。

今日のお昼は戸倉温泉のはた屋さんでおしぼりうどんを食べに行きました。そこで、｢町をきれいに、地球を大切に」と言うテーマで戸倉温泉でこんな事をする会が出来ている：

＊散歩の時など　ごみ拾いをする。
＊家の周りに草花を植える。
＊近所に草花を植える時に手伝う。
＊植えた草花の手入れや水やり。
＊近所の掲示板の管理。
＊里山の草木の手入れ。
＊使用済み割り箸を集めて、灰焼き。

私は平日の朝に我が僕達の通学の班長の所まで一緒に歩く時に、いつもほうきを持ってごみ拾いをしています。そして、亀清では、使用済みの割り箸は薪ストーブのたきつけとして使っています。聞いたら、｢じゃ、タイラーも隊員になれる｣と言ってくれました。隊員になったら、手作りバッヂを頂きました。

I am proud to announce that I have become a member of the Midori (=Green) Support Corps.

What the heck is that?

Well, allow me to explain. I went to lunch today to Hataya for some oshibori udon, and they gave me info on this new organization. The activities are as follows:

*When out walking, pick up garbage.
*Plant flowers around your own house.
*Help out with planting flowers in the neighborhood.
*Water and care for the plants you planted.
*Take care of the neighborhood community sign board.
*Plant trees on your local mountain.
*Collect used disposable chopsticks and turn them into ash for fertilizer.

Whenever I accompany our sons up the Hancho place on their walk to school in the morning, I always take along a broom and sweep up trash. And we re-use our chopsticks here at Kamesei by using them for kinlding for our wood burning stove. So the lady at Hataya said I qualified. By joining, I got one of these cool hand-made badges.

この間に書いたように、私がこの戸倉上山田温泉の英語ウォーキングマップ・レストランガイドを作っております。その為に、載られるお店は一件、一件に回って、企画の説明をして、打ち合わせして、メニューの英語説明を話し合って、写真を撮ったりしなければならない。大変は大変ですが、逆に私にとっては良い勉強にもなるし、お店の皆と仲良くなる機会です。

その中から２つの話を紹介します。夕べはドイツからのお客様は二人が泊まっていて、夜はお寿司を食べたいと仰いました。「楽しいお店があるけど、長野県は海が無いからお寿司は・・・｣と言ったら、「あっ、マウンテン寿司か？良いな！｣と言われました。そして、鮨平に連れてあげました。せっかくだったから、マスターの平林さんと例の英語のマップのお話をしました。喜んで協力していただきました。メニューなどの打ち合わせしてから、さあ、写真撮り。イメージ写真のために、お料理もそうですけど、鮨平の場合は平林さんの顔とお店の雰囲気がポイントである。最初に撮った写真をドイツ人に見せたら、｢これじゃ駄目。私はデザイナーなのでこの写真は許せない。角度を変えて、撮り直しなさい。｣と言ってくれました。厳しく行ってくれて、皆が嬉しかった。やはり、せっかく英語のマップを作るなら、いい物を作りたいよね。
もう１つな話はおしぼりうどんで有名な古波久さんに行った時です。古波久さんにも協力を頂きまして、メニューの打ち合わせした時に、「たたみいわし」が出てきました。言葉で説明するより、実物を食べた方が分かると言う事で、作っていただいちゃった。干したいわしがプレスされて、シートになっていて、軽く焼いて、大根おろしと食べる一品です。そのままだけで十分美味しいけれど、その大根おろしはただの大根じゃなくて、辛みのねずみ大根ですごく刺激的でした。

マップ作り＝グルメー体験。最高！

As I wrote earlier, I am working on an English Walking Map / Restaurant Guide for Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Part of the process is to go to each and every one of the shops, talk with the owners and explain about the project, discuss their listing, figure out their menus in English, then take the pictures. It's a very time consuming process, but I'm actually finding it to be a rewarding chance to get to know more about the local businesses. Here are a couple of episodes:

Last night we had two guests from Germany that wanted to go eat sushi. I told them, "There is a fun sushi restaurant nearby, but you realize, Nagano doesn't have an ocean..." They replied, "Uhh, mountain sushi? Sounds great!" So I took them over to Sushihei, and used the chance to talk to the chef, Hirabayashi-san, about the English Map project. He gladly agreed to cooperate, so we went about discussing the details and his menu in English. When it came time for the picture, we decided that Hirabayashi-san's personality and the ambience of the shop should be the focus. I tried taking a picture accordingly, and the German lady asked to see it. She said, "This is no good. I am a designer, and cannot approve of this picture. Change your angle and re-take it." We were all glad to have her professional critique! Since so much effort is going into this map, it's good we're making it so professional!

Another valuable incident happened at Kohaku, a shop known for its oshibori udon. She also gladly agreed to cooperate. When discussing the menu, we came across "Tatami Iwashi". Rather than trying to explain it using words, she cooked one up for me. It turns out that tatami iwashi means dried sardines fry pressed into sheets, which she lightly fried and served over grated daikon radish. Except, it wasn't regular daikon -- it was her specialty spicy nezumi daikon. So it was delicious, and packed a punch!

So my map-making project is turning into a culinary adventure!

2009.11.25: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

庭の詳しいお客様が来まして、うちの庭師の手をかけた所々を褒めてくれました。最後で、｢亀があちらこちらにあるけど、私の家の庭に石で出来ている亀がある；大きい石が頭、前足と後ろ足も石で｣と言われました。あっ、うちの１００年風呂露天風呂の庭にまさにそんな亀があるよ！尚且つ、真ん中に立ている石に翼が広がっているようなもみじの木(＝鶴)もある。なお尚且つ、そのもみじの木がちょうど紅葉で真赤になっています。その場でお客様を連れて、見せに行きました。｢なるほどな。気が付くなかった｣と。もっと分かりやすく作るべきだったと言ったら、｢いいえ、私はセンスが無いだけ｣と言ってくれました。それにしても、せっかく作ったから人に見せたいと思いまして、こうやってブログに写真を載せさせていただきます。露天風呂に入る皆様、宜しくお願い致します。
One of our guests must have been a gardener -- he noticed a lot of the fine touches Okada-san did to our garden here at Kamesei. Then he mentioned that at his pesonal garden, he has a Kame (turtle) made out of stones. One big stone for the head, smaller stones for the fore-feet and legs. Hey! I made one like that in the garden for our 100 Year Bath outdoor bath! Plus, it has some vertical rocks with a momiji Japanese maple with branches spread out like wings, like a Tsuru crane. (Tsuru and Kame are considered to be animals that bring good fortune and longevity.) Plus plus, the momiji's leaves are in full autumn color right now. So I brought the guest to the outdoor bath's garden and showed him. He said, "Ah, I hadn't noticed it." When I said I should have made it more noticeable, he replied, "No, I just don't have a sense for such things." But I think I need to work harder at making people aware of the garden's Tsuru-Kame, starting with this blog entry!

2009.11.24: 長野に来る理由 Reasons to Come to Nagano

先日はＴＶで国の税金無駄扱いの番組があった：馬は１頭も無い牧場、何も無い所で立派な資料館など。その資料館に空から見たでかい写真が床になっていた；素晴らしいけど来館人数が少なくて見る人がいない。
長野県の国営アルプスあずみの公園は７月に大町・松川地区がオープンしました。｢空中回廊」で森の上が見えるとか、変わった乗り物とかで話題になっています。この勤労感謝の日に家族を連れて、行って見ました。ＴＶ番組の様な税金無駄扱いか、人が集まる国の宝物のどちらでしょうか？結論は：

難しい。

ある建物（堀金・穂高地区の受付所）の床は空から撮った写真だった。「あっ、ＴＶと一緒！」と思った。
そして、話題の、期待していた空中回廊は森の木の葉っぱが既に落ちていたせいか、あまり感動的じゃなかった。
例の乗り物は確かに、子供達も子供のお父ちゃん(＝私）も楽しめた。ミニスクーターやでかいドーナツ風船を乗って、芝生の坂を下りて、楽しめました。しかし、その横の普通なプレーグラウンドの普通な滑り台も楽しめた。
木の皮を使ったクラフト作り体験とかもあったけど、東京でも出来そうな体験だった。「アルプス」の公園だから、アルプスでしか出来ない体験の方が良い様な気がする。例えば、自分で森で拾った皮を使って作るとか。木のないコンクリートだらけの東京じゃ出来ない。
それもポイントだと思った：｢アルプス｣と言いながら、公園はアルプスのふもとにあったせいで山が見えない。残念でした。山が見える展望台は作れるでしょうか？つまり、ただの子供の滑り台でも、上高地の様な大自然な背景があれば｢国営公園｣らしさが出るのではないかと思いました。
沢山のお客さんが致し、沢山の笑顔もあったから税金の無駄扱いではないと思いました。しかし、国レベルより、県又は町で作ってもおかしくない(もしくは作るべきな)公園だと私が思いました。
注：夜は堀金・穂高地区の方に移って、イルミネーションを楽しんできました。

There was a show on TV recently about wasteful government spending: a horse ranch with no horses, a spectacular museum in the middle of nowhere with no visitors, etc. The museum had an aerial view picture blown up and displayed on the floor -- beautiful except no one ever comes to see it.

Here in Nagano Prefecture, the Omachi section of the Alps Azumino Government National Park opened in July. It features a special bridge allowing visitors to see the forest canopy, as well as fanciful toys people can ride in the park. Was this another example of a waste of tax dollars? The family and I went to check it out on this Labor Day Holiday. And the verdict is:

Mixed.

First of all, one of the buildings (the entrance hall of the Hotaka area) had an aerial photo as its floor -- not a good omen. The forest canopy path was a disappointment -- maybe it would've been more enjoyable before all the leaves had fallen. The funky toys were fun to ride down the grassy slopes -- mini scooters and huge doughnut balloons. However, the kids enjoyed the slide in the kiddy playground just as much. There was a crafts-making place where you could make trinkets out of tree bark and stuff. But you could do that just as well in Tokyo. This is the "Alps" park, so why not offer things you can only do in the Alps. For example, have the kids go into the forest and pick up bark to make their own creation. You can't do that in the concrete jungle of Tokyo. That's what was missing at this Alps park -- the Alps! Since the park was too close to the mountains, you couldn't see the peaks. Even a kiddy slide would be fantastic if it had the Alps as a backdrop. So how about an Alps viewing platform?

There were a lot of visitors, and a lot of smiling faces, so I'd say the park isn't a waste of tax dollars. And we enjoyed the drive over to the Hotaka side and its illumination show at night. But the whole park felt like a regular regional one, not a spectacular national one, in my humble opinion.
