2009.02.28: 青い目のおもてなし This American’s Omotenashi

以前に、この戸倉上山田温泉のイメージについての悩みのことを書きました。バッブルのころの繁華街のイメージがまだ残っていること及び芸者の役割のこと。
ブロギングするだけではなく、そのイメージを回復するために活動してきました。旅館組合と一緒に木・金に東京へ宣伝キャラバンやりました。50＋社の旅行会社や業界メディアに寄って、町の新しい体験プログラムを紹介しました。個人客も楽しんでいただける温泉に生まれ変わりましたのでそのPRしてきました。
A while ago, I blogged about how Togura Kamiyamada Onsen suffers from an image problem of its bar girl scene from back in the bubble years. The bar girls still exist, but to me, the town's attractiveness lies in its natural setting and the wonderful onsen water, as well as the geisha heritage, not the bar girls.
Rather than just blogging about it, I took action to improve the town's image. Along with several other innkeepers, we did a PR caravan to Tokyo, visiting 50+ travel agents and industry media outlets, advertising about our town's new programs to experience the local culture. We are trying to show everyone that our onsen can be enjoyed by individuals, not just groups of guys like back in the bubble years.

先輩情報によると、３月１６日に発売予定のミシュランガイド・ジャパン緑(観光）版で何と、戸倉上山田温泉の芸者の事が載るようです。去年の６月にミシュランの編集の方が長野に来た時に、千曲市は１０分間のアポが取れて、私がプレゼンを致しました。どういう内容か、３月１６日は楽しみですね。
そして、今日、千曲市の生まれてから初めての英語の観光ガイドもリリースされました。私から言うのは変かもしれないけど、なかなか上手くできました。今度はどんどんと千曲市のPRしていきます。

According to one of the other innkeepers in town, Michelin's Japan Travel Guide (to be out 16-March) will list a new spot in Nagano: Togura Kamiyamada Onsen! Last year, their editor passed through Nagano and our town got a 10 minute appointment with him. Apparently my presentation was effective, as our town's geisha will be featured in the new guide.

Also, today, Chikuma City's first ever English Sightseeing Guidebook was released. Not bad, if I do say so myself. Now our town has the tools to better provide information to guests from overseas.

和名：クリスマスローズ・ハイブリッド（Helleborus hybrid)

うちの庭師、岡田さん、が亀清の庭状態を確認しに来ました。私は庭がまだ冬眠しているようにしか見えなかったですが、さすが岡田さんのプローの目でこのクリスマスロースの動きが見つけました。今年の冬が暖かくて、あまり雪景色になりませんでした。その分で庭の動きもやはり早いですね。
Our gardener, Okada-san, came by today to check on Kamesei's garden. To my eye, the garden is still asleep for the winter, but Okada-san's pro eye saw signs of spring. This Christmas Rose is starting to wake up. This winter has been unusually warm, so the garden is starting to wake up earlier than usual.

2009.02.25: 亀清旅館 Kamesei Ryokan

亀清の離れ風の部屋へ行く渡り廊下の屋根が落ち雪で大分痛んでいました。地元の石井Roofersに一部を張りなおしてもらいました。先週の週末のお客さんに｢塗りなおした方が良い｣と指摘を頂きました。｢実は、手配済みです｣と答えれました。本当はお客様に言われる前に完成すべきでしたが、まあ、直すところが沢山ある中でちょっとずつやっています。常連のお客様が来るたびに「あっ、あれもそれも綺麗になった！｣と喜んで頂いております。今年は更に頑張りたいと思っておりますので宜しくお願いします。
The roof of our Watari-Roka passageway that crosses the garden over to the 'Hanare-fu' detached rooms has born the brunt of many a snow fall. It had gotten pretty banged up, so we had our local Ishii Roofers come and redo part of it. Last weekend, one of our guests commented that the roof needed refinishing, and we were able to tell him that we already had it arranged. Ideally we should have had it done before guests complain, but with all the things that need fixing around our inn, we are steadily making progress as best as we can. It's rewarding to hear our regular customers say, "Oh, you've fixed that here and that over there." This year we have many more improvements planned, to make staying at our inn even more enjoyable.

I Am Ultraman!

戸倉上山田温泉の山の手通りで最近に改造した家があって、その玄関にこの人がデビューしました：ウルトラマン！なかなかレトロなマンです。うちの妻の子供のころに温泉の南部公園にウルトラマンの像があったそうです。この感じでしたでしょうか？まあ、この不景気の中でウルトラマンの力も貸して欲しいですね。
There's a house on Yamanote Street here in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen that recently remodelled. Now they have this guy standing at the entrance: Ultraman. This 'Man is looking pretty retro. I'm not sure, but my wife tells stories about the onsen's Nanbu Park having a bunch of Ultraman statues when she was a kid. I wonder if they were like this guy. I do know that with this tough economy, we sure could use Ultraman's help.

このころは周辺のグループの新年会のお陰で亀製旅館がにぎやかになっています。従業員の皆が一所懸命働いているので今日は従業員のための新年会。皆で戸倉上山田温泉の「河菜」という創作料理店に行ってきました。贅沢のお料理をたまに食べるとおいしいね！まあ、うちの板長と仲居さん達、このころは特にご苦労様！
Lately Kamesei has hosted several neighborhood groups for their "Shin-nenkai" New Year parties. Our staff has been working so hard, we figured it was time for our inn's own New Year party. So we walked over to Kawana tonight for some "sousaku" creative cooking. It sure was fun getting spoiled ourselves for a change. I want to take this time to thank our chef and all the staff!

久しぶりの夜景ツアー

夕べは久しぶりに姨捨夜景・伝説ツアーの実施ができました。最近は新年会で地元のお客様が多いこと及び、低い温度のせいでこのツアーは売れていませんでした。（売れるといっても、無料でやっておりますけど。。。）今回のメンバーはなんとリピーターでした。去年の8月に来た時にご一緒に行かれて、そしてまた冬の澄んでいる空気の時に夜景も見たいのでまた来たわけです。前回は一緒に行ったお客様と連絡を取り合うようになって、お互いに年賀状も交換したそうです。姨捨はその効果もあるようです。マジックですね。
Last night, our Obasute Night View / Legends tour took place, the first time in quite a while. Lately, most of our guests have been locals coming for New Year banquets, and/or the guests have chickened out due to cold temperatures. The guests last night were actually Obasute Repeaters. They had stayed with us last August and had gone on the tour with me then. But they wanted to see the night view in the winter when the air is clearest. When we went last year, another couple had gone with us, and those two couples ended up keeping in touch with each other, even sending each other New Years greeting cards. Obasute has that magic effect on people.

カスタマー・サービス：人間！A real live Customer Service person

2009.02.21: 日米関係Culture Shock

先日は息子のゲームが壊れて、メーカーに電話しなくてならなかった。京都の本社の元花札のメーカー。電話したら、人間が出ました。吃驚しました。アメリカの会社だったら、きっとまずガイダンスが出て、本物の人間としゃべるのに苦労する。N社の場合はまず人間が出ました。感心しました。亀清みたいな小さな旅館も「人」を大事にしています。日本のおもてなしはすばらしい！
The other day, one of our kids' game went kapput, so I had to call the manufacturer. I really dreaded doing so, as in the States, that would mean getting a recorded message and fighting your way through the prompts until reaching a real live person. But when I called this particular company　（a certain company headquartered in Kyoto and originally started making hanafuda cards), a human being answered. I was shocked. Little ryokans like us pride ourselves on our personal omotenashi service. It's good to see big corporations here do the same.

日本の温泉文化は本当に贅沢ですね。亀清の「百年風呂」露天風呂を作った時に、お客様のために作りました。私達も毎晩、入れています。贅沢です。今日は特にそう。天気は最近、やっと冬らしくなってきて、そのお陰で今日は露天風呂に入りながら、雪が顔にちらちらと降っていました。

最高でした。

これは本来の露天風呂の役割、日本の温泉の良いところ。

硫黄の香り、湯花、行灯に光れた湯気、暖かくて気持ちよいお風呂、そして雪の中で楽しめる。舌を出して、ベロで雪をキャッチ。

最高！

When I built the "100 Year Bath" outdoor bath, it was for the enjoyment of our guests. We, of course, get to use it, too, every day. Tonight was one of those magical onsen moments. The weather lately has finally become winter-like, and so tonight's outdoor bath was accompanied by snow.

Sublime. Simply sublime.

This is as good as the Japanese onsen gets. The strong sulfur smell, the yu-hana minerals floating in the bath, the steam coming off the bath and being lit in the andon lantern, the soathingly warm water, and being able to stick your tongue out and catch snowflakes.

This is it.

善光寺御開帳記念サーカス Zenkoji Gokaicho Memorial Circus

2009.02.19: 温泉タウン戸倉上山田 Onsen Town Togura-Kamiyamada

一昨年はNHKの大河ドラマ｢風林火山｣で亀清旅館では撮影現場になった荒砥城を案内する｢風林火山プラン｣を実施いたしました。好評でした。
今年の４月と５月は善光寺の７年に１度の御開帳です。私はこれで始めて体験することです。何かお客様が喜んでいただける｢御開帳プラン｣を色々と考えていますが、なかなか思いつかないです。善光寺にある宿坊に良い｢コネ｣がいるけれども、｢その時期は宿坊の皆がパンク状態；勘弁してくれ｣と言われました。やはり、御開帳はビッグなイベントですね。それこそ、お客様が寄り深く御開帳と触れ合えるように何かないかな。。。。座禅とか、精進料理とか。。。。とずっと悩んでいます。
そしてまさか思いつかなかった事が出てきました：キグレサーカス長野公演｢善光寺御開帳記念｣＠千曲市。３月２０日から５月２４日に行う予定です。３月にオープンする予定の千曲駅側だそうです。
サーカスは御開帳とどういう関係化私のはまだ分かりませんが、御開帳に行くついでにお子さん達の楽しみに是非、お越しになってください。４月１０日までに申し込めば切符は安くなります：大人2700円-->2200円、子供1500円-->1200円

Two years ago while national TV broadcaster NHK was showing their Fuurinkazan year long historical drama, we here at Kamesei Ryokan put on a special package included guided tours of Arato Castle which NHK used for some of the show's scenes. Our guests enjoyed the added bonus of seeing the castle.
This year, in April and May, Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City will hold their once-every-seven-years "Gokaicho". For this major event, I once again wanted to provide something special for our guests, and I've been striving to think of what would be appropriate. This will be my first time to experience the event, so I'm at a double disadvantage. I have a "connection" at Zenkoji and asked him for help, but he said "no way" -- they're absolutely slammed for the entire two months. This really is a big deal. So I've been thinking, and thinking ... zazen meditation? Buddhist cuisine? ...
Then I spotted a flyer in the newspaper for a special Zenkoji Gokaicho Memorial Circus. Now, why didn't I think of that sooner? It will take place from 20-March through 24-May near the new Chikuma Station scheduled to open in March. What the heck a circus has to do with Zenkoji, I have no clue, but if you contact us by 10-April, we can get reduced rate tickets: Adults 2700yen --> 2200yen, Children 1500yen --> 1200yen. Come and enjoy the circus after your pilgrimmage to Zenkoji!
