Most Snow Ever!

February 15, 2014: 季節 Seasons

Valentine's Day evening saw the snow start to fall, and fall, and fall. By the next morning around 70cm accumulated -- a record for our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada.

Pictured is the scene of Kamesei Ryokan's naka-niwa central garden, taken from the 2nd story.

After 4 hours of shoveling snow, my body was spent. With the freeways closed and the trains not running, we got one cancelation call after another, so my spirit was spent, too. But then we got several calls from the Nagano Station info desk, looking for rooms for Australian skiiers stuck without train service, and all hotels in the city full booked. A few groups shared taxis to Kamesei, helping to compensate for some of the cancelations.

We are worried about when the snow on our roof comes crashing down, but for now, let's enjoy this rare scenery of deep snow.
