Pension Culture @ Karuizawa -- Highland Inn Ease

Pension "Ease" in Karuizawa

Running a ryokan (Japanese-style inn) as I do here at Kamesei, it is easy to forget that there are other types of accommodation. I tend to not pay any attention to hotels or 'minshuku' bread and breakfasts. And places like youth hostels, temple lodging, campgrounds, the ever-more popular low-price guesthouses stay off my radar. Even the ubiquitous love hotels escape my attention.

But the other day, I paid a visit at a 'pension' in Karuizawa called "Highland Inn Ease". I met with the owner, Ogiwara-san. He often makes sales trips to Hongkong, Taiwan and elsewhere to promote his lodge at travel fairs.

After our talk, Ogiwara-san gave me a tour of "Ease". It was my first time inside a 'pension'. I have to admit, I am not up on pension culture. From what I could tell, "Ease" is fairly typical: family-run, small (only 8 rooms), western-style rooms with beds, limited food preparation. limited bathing facilities.

Hagiwara-san explained that their guests spend most of their time sightseeing and shopping in Karuizawa and think of their accommodation as simply a place to sleep. A lot of our guests here at Kamesei Ryokan also spend the day sightseeing (Zenkoji Temple, spiritual Togakushi Mountain, even Karuizawa) but look forward to enjoying relaxing in their guestroom, soaking in the onsen bath, and partaking of our chef's satisfying meals.

I guess I have to familiarize myself more with pension culture.
