Secret Tea House: Asahanoan

Asahanoan's friendly facade

Off to the entrance to the trail to Kosuge Inner Shrine in Iiyama City was this wooden gate. It had a mysterious, welcoming aura to it. The sign on it said "Asahanoan". Wondering what it was, I noticed a smaller sign, "Open". Feeling a bit adventurous, I ducked through the gate, passed through the beautiful garden and came upon ...

the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Or, in this case, something even more magical -- a tea house.

I had just finished climbing up to Kosuge's Inner Shrine and back with the family, and we were hoping for just such a place for a post-hike snack. Asahanoan, with its Japanese-styled wooden architecture, wonderfully thriving garden, home made ice cream -- it was like a dream.

Asahanoan makes a perfect stop after a hike, but is charming enough to be a romantic destination all by itself.

The teahouse has no website and no brochures. I hate cliches, but Asahanoan is truly a hidden gem. Apparently they are closed for the winter due to the area's heavy snow. But their phone number is 0269-65-3988. If you find yourself craving something sweet in Iiyama City, look them up.
