豪華のぶらぶらEnjoying Gondo's Glamour
家族のお出かけで長野市に行ってきました。長野市の代表できるアーケード、権堂、でぶらぶらしました。(=権ぶら？）日本はこういうアーケードが段々と少なくなっています。アメリカ風のショッピングモールが変わりに増えています。良いか悪いか。。。と思いますが。
実は私の地元のシアトルで１９５０年にアメリカで初めてのショッピングモールが出来ました。歩行者専用なモールの両側にデパートや専門店が並んであって、周りは駐車場。(アメリカは既に車の社会だったようです。）シアトルは雨が多いのでモールの上に屋根が付けられた。現在はアメリカのどこの町でも郊外に広過ぎる駐車場にチェイン店だらけのショッピングモールがあります。それぞれの町のダウンタウンが逆に苦しんでいます。特徴なお店が多いけど駐車場が高くて不便が問題です。
権堂のようなアーケード電車の駅に便利で面白い専門店、家族経営の小さなお店等あって、その立派な屋根の下で通りを歩くと豪華な感じします。ぶらぶらすれば色んなお店の方とお話しもできるし、その｢ふれあい｣感はアメリカ式のショッピングモールを全然違います。
シアトルに住んでいた時に、買い物パラダイスのモールは私にとって、逆に地獄でした。触れ合い度の高いダウンタウンが好きでした。その気持ちで、権堂も応援しています。
Our family went on an outing today to Nagano City. We rambled along Gondo, the covered shopping arcade. These arcades are slowly disappearing in Japan, being replaced by American-style suburban shopping centers.
My hometown of Seattle actually has America's first shopping mall, Northgate. Back in 1950, some developers designed a row of specialty stores (including Nordstrom's -- back then just a shoe store) and anchored by a department store, facing a pedestrian 'mall' and surrounded by a parking lot. To get the shoppers out of Seattle's rain, a cover was added to the mall. Voila! The suburban shopping mall.
Now, every town has mall with acres of parking lots and the same chain stores. The same towns have downtown areas that have lots of unique shops and a lot of character, but are struggling as shoppers flock to the malls with the free parking.
Japan's arcades like Gondo have unique specialty shops and family-run stores, providing a great opportunity to stop and talk with the owners. And walking under the glamorous roof makes you feel like a star. The experience is so much more rewarding than the purely commercial rush of a shopping mall. I hope arcades like Gondo can survive and flourish.
