亀清旅館の客間「千歳」の外側の坪庭は二年前に庭師の岡田さんに作ってもらいました。代表の植物は森「あんずの里」記念で杏の木ですが、沢山の植物があります。私はそれぞれの花の名前をまだ勉強中です。

この間、お客さんに聞かれまして:　庭に今咲いている紫の花は何かと。私も前から気になっていました。岡田さんに聞いたら、その花は

青葉藤袴　（アオイフジバカマ）Eupatorium japonicum

岡田さんの作った庭は見る度に新しい花、新しい表現をしています。今までは亀清でこういう楽しみがなかった。今年は今に作っている家族風呂の庭を作ってもらう予定で、楽しみはまた一つ増えます。

In the streetside tsubo-niwa pocket garden for Kamesei Ryokan's "Chitose" guestroom, the main element is the apricot tree in honor of nearby Mori "Apricot Village". Our gardener, Okada-san, planted this garden 2 years ago.

Besides the apricot tree are lots of other curious plants and flowers. I am still learning all the names.
The other day, a guest asked what the purple flowers that are blooming now are. I had been wondering myself, so I called up Okada-san. They are:

Aobafujibakama, (Eupatorium japonicum)
The Japanese name means blue-leaf wisteria hakama (the long, pleated skirt worn over a man's formal kimono).
Hmm, sounds much better than the English name, a thoroughwort.

All of the gardens that Okada-san has built for us have surprises like this. Up until now, Kamesei's gardens have been severely lacking this element. And this year, Okada-san is scheduled to build the garden for our now under-construction family bath. I am sure there will be more surprises in store.

この頃は青空の日々が続いています。昼間は温かくなりますが、ムシムシしていないから過ごしやすい;朝方夕方は大分涼しくなる。

温泉に入るのにちょうどいい。

9月の天気は温泉の旅に向いていますね。

Lately we've been blessed with beautiful blue skies. The daytime temperature gets pretty warm, but without the humidity we had in August. And the evenings and mornings cool down considerably.

The perfect temperature to enjoy a soak in an onsen.

September is just right for going on a trip to an onsen!

「お盆が終わってから秋の風が降る」と言う表現は良く耳に入ります。どれだけ合っているか分かりませんが、その風に一つな香りが流れてくると感じます:松茸。

この時期になると、その上品の松茸を食べたくなります。亀清の若女将も、板長も、皆が松茸ファンです。

お客様もきっと松茸を好む方がいらっしゃるでしょうとの思いで、私達亀清旅館は新しいプランを準備しました:

上山田のぶどう狩りが始まりました!今日はハワイからのご家族をクラウン農園の畑に連れて行きました。大喜びでした。普通は観光している時に、忙しい旅を止めて、畑に入る機会がない。しかし、実際に畑に入って、ぶどうの甘い香りをして、農家の飛田さんと色々と聞いたり、良い旅の思い出になったようです。

（旅じゃなくてここで普通に生活している私にも、良い経験でした。）

Kamiyamada's grape season has officially started. Today I took a family from Hawaii to Crown Farm's orchard. Normally when you are travelling, you don't get a chance to take a break from the busy sightseeing schedule and actually step foot into an orchard, smell the sweet fragrance of the grapes, feel the musty earth underneath your feet, touch the grape leaves, ask Tobita-san the grower all kinds of curious questions.

It made for a great memory for the travellers from Hawaii.

Heck, it made a great memory for me, living here.

つい最近に周辺の田んぼの写真を載せました。綺麗な深い緑色で、美しい色合いだった。

今日は姨捨の「田毎の月」棚田を通ったら、もう稲穂が出ていました。田んぼの成長が早い!もう秋気分になってきました。

一日一日を楽しんでいかなっきゃいけない。

Just a couple of days ago, I posted a picture of a local rice field in its fullest green color.

Now today, driving through the famous moon-reflecting Obasute rice fields, I noticed that the rice fronds have already started developing their rice kernels. The rice sure develops quickly! The fields are already in autumn mode.

Just another reminder that you have to cherish each and every day!

私は田んぼの式の色が大好きです。秋は稲穂の金色、冬の起こされた土の茶色と雪の白色、春の苗の黄緑、そして夏の深い緑色。

ちょうど今は周辺の田んぼの色が一番深い緑色。代表の姨捨「田毎月」の棚田の田んぼは今、見事。

この時期は大好きです。

I love how rice fields reflect the four seasons. They turn golden brown in the fall at harvest time, then a rich shade of brown contrasting with white snow as they lay barren in the fall, and a lovely shade of yellow green after they are planted in the spring. And in the summer, a deep green color as the plants reach maturity.

Right now the rice fields around town are at their deepest shade of green. The terraced rice fields at nearby Obasute are particularly stunning.

I love this time of year.

戸倉上山田温泉の裏の城山に善光寺別院のお寺さんがあります。お寺からの眺めが綺麗だし、お客さんに時々連れて行きます。

今回は眺めより、お寺の庭の蓮の花が印象的でした。「そう言えば、今は蓮の花の時期だ」と思い出した増した。善光寺別院の庭にもありますが、この千曲市の八幡地区の大雲寺の蓮がこの辺の代表的な蓮スポット。お城の様なお寺の建物に広い蓮の池で、お勧めです。

Above our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is a branch temple of the venerable Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. The view from the temple's deck is spectacular, so I often take guest up there.

This time, though, more than the view, the lotus flowers blooming in the temple's pond grabbed our attention. That reminded me that this is lotus flower season.

Here in Chikuma City, the main lotus flower viewing spot is Daiun-ji Temple in the Yawata neighborhood. The castle-like temple building features a huge pond covered with lotus flowers. This is the perfect time to see the beautiful flowers.

「（先日の）メンテナンス後の松風に庭の写真。
なかなか良い感じになってきました。

今、オレンジ（朱色）の花を咲かせている植物は 「フシグロセンノウ（Lychnis miqueliana）」。
ナデシコ科センノウ属の宿根草。亀清の庭でも、今 “ ナデシコ ” の仲間が花盛りです。」

日本女子サッカーのワールドカップ優勝をおめでとうございます。アメ人の私は優勝戦でどれを応援すべきか悩みましたが、なでしこの皆様の嬉しさを見たら、こちらも嬉しいです。庭の花をこう見たら、なお嬉しいです。これが花のナデシコなんだ。

ちなみに、庭師の岡田さんが最近に出た「住まいnet信州」の住宅建築の本に紹介なされました。亀清旅館の事もメンションしてくれました。

Kamesei Ryokan's gardener, Okada-san, came by for regular maintenance on our gardens. He sent these pictures of guest room Matsukaze's garden. Right now this orange flower is blooming. It is called nadeshiko (Lychnis miqueliana).

Nadeshiko is also the nickname for Japan's womens national soccer team, the same team that just won the women's World Cup soccer tournament. It seems our garden is showing its support for the team. I have to admit mixed feelings about Japan's victory as it came at the expense of America's ladies team. The goalkeeper, Hope Solo, went to the University of Washington, my alma mater. But after seeing the joyous faces of the nadeshiko ladies, I couldn't help but be happy for them. And now seeing the beautiful nadeshiko flower in our garden, I am even happier.

Okada-san the gardener was recently featured in a Home and Garden magazine. The article mentioned Kamesei Ryokan, too!

夕べのお客様はいきなり「杏狩りしに行きたい」と言い出した。夕方5時半でした。杏農家の皆様はその時間帯がもうおしまい。

残念?いいえ。我が亀清旅館に2年前に植えた杏の木があって、実は少しなっていましたので、お客様を案内しました。「一本の気だけですが…」と言ったら、「それで良いです。杏の実は見た事がないから。どうなっているか見てみたい」と言われました。

まあ、小さい事でしたが、お客様は初めて杏のみを見て、初めて「採りたて」で食べました。庭師の岡田さんの植えた杏の木は昔からの種類で、実は「尼酸っぱい」と言うより、ただの「酸っぱい」って感じ。どちらかと言うと、ジャム作りに最適。個人的には私が好きですが、お客さんに最近の種類、甘い「ハーコート」の方が良かったかもしれない。

Last night, our guests suddenly declared that they wanted to go pick apricots. At 5:30pm. Umm, all of the apricot orchardists are done for the day.

But never fear, Kamesei Ryokan is here! 2 years ago, our gardener planted an apricot tree for us. It actually was bearing a bit of fruit, so I took the guests to see it. It was their first time to see apricots in anything other than a jar of jam, so they were pretty excited.

The variety that our gardener planted was an heirloom variety. A nice, tart (sour?) variety. Perfect for jam. I personally like the tartness, but I think our guests would have preferred a modern variety like the sweet Harcot.

この時期の千曲川はいつも鮎釣りのおじさん達の姿で落ち着いた雰囲気になります。今年は梅雨の雨で流されたり、鵜で食われたりのせいか、鮎の数が例年より少ないそうです。従って、鮎釣りの方も少ない。ちょっとさびしい。

しかし、この頃は川にその独特の長い竿で友釣りしている方の姿は見えてきましたから、鮎の数が安定してきたかな?

先日は子供達を連れて、我が亀清旅館が付き合っているつけばに自転車で行きました。川辺の景色で、涼しい風、つけばののんびりの雰囲気が大好きです。私がオヤジになったら、夏の長い日々をこういう所で過ごせたら幸せ。

This time of the year, the Chikuma River takes on a unique look as the fishermen wade into the river and use their amazingly long rods to fish for ayu. This year, however, the ayu population has been depleted by tsuyu (rainy-season) swollen currents as well as hungry cormorants. But lately I've started to see a few fishermen in the river, so perhaps the ayu presence has stabilized.

Yesterday, I took our kids for a bike ride along the river to visit one of the fishing shacks. I love the laid back feel of these 'tsukeba' shacks where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the riverside scene and the cool breeze.

There are 2 types of tsukeba: fishing shacks like this one, and ones that serve multi-course ayu cuisine. If you are interested in checking out one of the fishing tsukeba, Kamesei's favorite is Maruken in neighboring Sakaki Town. Call 0268-82-2243 and say 'moshi-moshi' to Toyama-san.
